Chris Knowlton moved to northeast Iowa from Hawaii five years ago. I love it here that the change of seasons is fantastic. The open wide speeches and uh, in the summertime there's every shade of green that the Lord could ever come up with. It's beautiful here. But what surprised him the most in his time here didn't show up until early monday morning. A black bear. I find that exciting. Yeah, I wish there were more around. I mean just can't uh, I never actually saw one with my own eyes, but They don't have that in Hawaii of course. And according to Brian Preston with the W. Conservation Department, most neighbors in the area are feeling the same way. I think most people are excited that it's in the area. I haven't heard anybody complaining about it. Burg were actually extirpated from Iowa around 1850. They were native and uh, this one particularly likes the mud lake area. Preston says he doesn't believe this means the area will see a significant increase in the number of black bears. However, he says, W County could become home to a few more in the coming years. For now. He wants people to take some precautions. It has gotten into a few garbage cans and bird feeders, so we're asking people to not put their garbage out in this area until the morning. You know that they're garbage gonna be picked up, maybe take down the bird feeders for a while. He also says people should not leave food for their pets outside at night. We want to keep a wild bear while.
