A joint select committee headed by BJP MLA from CV Raman Nagar S Raghu proposed changes to the BBMP’s structure and that has been incorporated in the Bill.
The separate law for the BBMP has also introduced a 30-month term for the mayor and the deputy mayor, while the term of standing committees continues to be one year. The change will cut the number of mayors to two over a period of five years. The existing provisions in the KMC Act permit the election of a mayor and deputy mayor every 12 months.
The Bill has paved way for increasing the number of zones from eight to 15. Each zone will be headed by zonal commissioners who will report to the BBMP’s chief commissioner.
