Florida is braced, for what many have described as the storm of the century. Our correspondents are there. We will speak to one resident who has decided to stay. And will they ever fully recover . In the wake of Hurricane-ian'>Hurricane Ian, 95 of the damage assessments, were downgraded by the insurance companies. This could be a disastrous 12 hours, for Tens Of Thousands of american families. Welcome to the programme. There is driving wind and torrential rainfall that has already arrived in florida, several hours before Hurricane-milton'>Hurricane Milton is due to arrive. The national Weather Service has confirmed in the last hour there are at least ten active Tornado Warnings in the region. We have been tracking an extremely dangerous tornado heading north near fort myers. And thats not the half of it. Right now milton is 150 miles south west of tampa with sustained winds of 145 mph, and very soon it will be pushing water onto the coast, with a Storm Surge of 15 feet expected in the worst hit areas. That is likely to be somewhere between somewhere just south of Tampa Bay Close to sarasota. There is now barely enough time to get out. Major roads and bridges will close in the next few hours. And from that point, those who stayed will be on their own. This is what it looks like from the international space station. Tells you what a monster it is. Our correspondent Gordon Corera is in tampa with the latest. Tampa today has the feel of a ghost town. A city thats been left to the wildlife. The few People who are still out are mainly here because theyre taking desperate steps to protect what they can. Like fatim, who kept her shop open so People could get last minute supplies, but is now boarding it up. Shes written her name on her arm in Case Something happens to her. Fatim. I write my name here, just in case i got flooded, nobody knows where i am. So youre that worried, youve written your name on your arm . Its better for People to know my identity, you know, just in case. You dont know. Yeah. This is, this is the worst one thats going to come. So hopefully, hopefully everybody is safe. Yeah, hopefully its not bad, just electric and thats it. Okay. Yeah. Losing power is no big deal. Oh, yeah. Losing lives is. Thats what matters. Yeah. Thank you. This is tampas entertainment district. Normally, its bustling, but today its boarded up. It lies just outside the mandatory evacuation zone. But everyone here seems to have taken the advice and either got out, or hunkered down. At least half the city has left, and police are focusing on those whove remained in the high risk areas. So weve evacuated nearly 200,000 People. But the challenge is, its just a few that are still out there, and our officers are going door to door to try to convince those People to actually evacuate. Some are reluctant, but our goal is to save lives here. And the more People we can get evacuated, the more lives we can save. The Tampa Region has around 3 MillionPeople living in it, and many did make their way out in the last few days, heeding the stark warnings. Petrol stations have been running out as People fill up. No one is quite sure when they will come back. And to what . Weve never had one like this. Ive been here for 38 years and never had one that forced us to do this. Never being able to find fuel. This is the only place that has fuel. Diggers have also been trying to clean up the debris from Hurricane-helene'>Hurricane Helene, which hit two weeks ago, to try and reduce the risk of milton throwing all of this around and causing more damage. But time has now run out. You need to prepare for catastrophic impacts. This is going to be a serious storm, one that could forever change communities that are still recovering from helene. I know it is tough to leave behind everything you own but i urge everyone in the path of the Hurricane to follow all Safety Instructions in the next 24 hours. It is literally a matter of life and death. But now, with the storm just hours away from landfall, its a question of waiting and bracing for impact. Gordon corera, bbc news, tampa. My Colleague Sumi Somaskanda is in Boynton Beach on the South Ease Coast between Fort Lauderdale and palm beach. Extraordinary looking at these pictures. To think that by the time it gets to you once its crossed the state, it will still be a Hurricane with winds still be a Hurricane with winds still around 100 mph. Still around 100 mph. Thats remarkable, still around 100 mph. Thats remarkable, isnt still around 100 mph. Thats remarkable, isnt it . Still around 100 mph. Thats remarkable, isnt it . Something the florida governor warned as well, we are focusing on that and looking at the impact where Hurricane-milton'>Hurricane Milton will hit tonight which is believed to be come as you said, but south of tampa toward sarasota and perhaps even south of the bear. The reality is that this storm, Hurricane-milton'>Hurricane Milton is expected to be so large and the winds moving so quickly that it will continue across florida, as you said, still is a Hurricane. Remember at certain points, Hurricane has been measured at 140 miles across, around 225 km, and bringing with it those incredibly high winds and, of course, the fear is that not only will we see those Storm Surges that you mentioned, christian, for some of those low lying areas that could be extremely dangerous but also heavy precipitation. Some estimates say many areas could see up to 18 inches of rain. That of course could create flash flooding. Now, where we are, this is not actually going to be the storms path, but you might notice its already becoming a little bit anonymous here. Its windy, the skies are dark, that is because the outer bands of the storm come as you have been mentioning, have already started to hit the southwest part of florida, those tornado sightings, we are just outside of an evacuation centre. We are not getting any closer right now because they been very careful at the Evacuation Centres that we been through the course of the day to make sure that the People who come here have their privacy respected. They dont want filming inside. Thats understandable, of course. These are People who are in distress. Something i can tell you is ijust spoke to a former teacher is dropping off supplies here are my cookies and sweets, things for the families who are going to be staying here and hunkering down, riding out the storm, this is something that floridians are used too. Of course, Hurricane season, but as you have been saying, this is a storm of a century and certainly many People very anxious. certainly many People very anxiou certainly many People very anxious. . ,. , ,. , anxious. Im going to put up on the screen anxious. Im going to put up on the screen the anxious. Im going to put up on the screen the map anxious. Im going to put up on the screen the map as anxious. Im going to put up on the screen the map as it anxious. Im going to put up on the screen the map as it is the screen the map as it is tracking towards the coast. And you might be able to see that it is moving fairly slowly about nine miles an hour at the moment. Its the bottom right Hand Quadrant of the Hurricane that does the big concern. So it tends to wobble as it comes towards land, and obviously as it spins anticlockwise, that bottom right Hand Side is pushing water onto the coast and pushing water away on the top right hand so when it wobbles, and it could move anything between 10 20 miles as a comes ashore, it really is part luck for those residents on the Gulf Coast and how hard they are hit. , coast and how hard they are hit. , hit. Thats absolutely right. Thats why hit. Thats absolutely right. Thats why weve hit. Thats absolutely right. Thats why weve seen hit. Thats absolutely right. I thats why weve seen florida officials say dont focus at this point on exactly where its going to hit because that could still very well change in the coming hours. We are expecting the storm to hit about 6 7 hours from now. At the moment it looks like sarasota but a little bit earlier training a bit further south, so wejust earlier training a bit further south, so we just have to see where exactly it hits, but even if it moves a bit further south, christian, the reality is with the strength and the force of this storm, the entire region along the Gulf Coast is going to be hit very, very hard. I know youve mentioned the florida governor, the conference he held a little bit earlier seeing some of those preparations under way here, the massive amounts of trucks and food and supplies that have been gathered but the reality is for those in those coastal areas along the western Gulf Coast, this is going to be an extremely impactful storm and thats why those warnings have continued for People if they can to still leave. Continued for People if they can to still leave. What about the feeling can to still leave. What about the feeling they can to still leave. What about the feeling they are can to still leave. What about the feeling they are in the feeling they are in florida . Because Hurricane-ian'>Hurricane Ian a few years ago was such a big event for florida. We are going to talk later in the Programme Tonight about insurance and the Relief Efforts, but clearly a lot of People didnt get paid out, not to the extent they thought they would. Its might be a lot of People in the outside world who think, here is the united states first world country, they will pick up world country, they will pick up the pieces, thats not the case, is h, for thousands of families who will lose out here. ,. Families who will lose out here. , here. That is a huge source of frustration still. Here. That is a huge source of frustration still. Its frustration still. Its important to say and we should mention this isjust important to say and we should mention this is just about two weeks after Hurricane-helene'>Hurricane Helene tour through florida, leaving tonnes of debris that still has tonnes of debris that still has to be picked up. So for People who are deciding to stay, this is, for some of them, one consideration. Their homes are all that they have. We spoke to all that they have. We spoke to a gentleman earlier who has a Mobile Home and decided to evacuate and came to a shelter in miami where we were a little bit earlier this morning. I asked him about why he thinks some People decide to stay and he says well, first of all, he thinks some People believe that they been able to write out previous storms, previous Hurricanes because they are used to it here, but they are also worried about the fact that they could lose everything that they could lose everything that they could lose everything that they have. As you said, if they are worried about perhaps getting that reimbursed down the road, thats even more reason for some People to decide to stay. That being said, this storm is different from the ones we have seen in the past, isnt it . It certainly the past, isnt it . It certainly is. We will keep a close eye on where it comes ashore in the sort of damage it inflicts on People. For the moment, thank you very much for that. There are hundreds of Power Restoration trucks on standby already in florida. They have been busy trying to pre position a lot of the help that will be required by friday. A lot of that will be coordinated by the federal emergency management agency. Lars anderson, a former senior official at fema. Thank you for being with us. Last few hours before a storm comes ashore like that, what will the authorities be doing right now . Right now . Well, theyve already told right now . Well, theyve already told People to i already told People to evacuate. Thats the first thing we need to do. At this point to the little too late in the game to start doing that. So what folks are doing now are pre positioning materials, food, water, Power Restoration teams, Search And Rescue teams. They know that they are going to, because not everyone did evacuate there will be Search And Rescue efforts happening but they need to pre position those teams. They can ride through the storm but as soon as its ok for them to start launching those, they will be ready to go. Six. Launching those, they will be ready to 90 ready to go. Six and a half million People ready to go. Six and a half million People we ready to go. Six and a half million People we are ready to go. Six and a half million People we are told trying to get out or have got out. What sort of pressure does that put on the Road System in florida . Youve seen the authorities, they reverse traffic, they open the shoulders so more cars can get through heading and the direction away from the storm. It is tough. Thats why they start telling folks three or four days before a Hurricane comes ashore to evacuate because you look up in the skies and its blue and you dont think, you know, it will be fine, but three or four days later thats when the storm hits. So they really trying to encourage People to evacuate early to ease up on those transportation systems. This is cominu transportation systems. This is coming right transportation systems. Theres been a lot of Rumour And Misinformation swirling around the preparations and the Relief Efforts from helene. Thank you very much for coming on the programme. Barbara tripp, the chief officer of Tampa Fire Rescue. Shes going to have a big job on her hands in the next couple of days. Taking a short break. On the other side of the break we will focus on a rather big story which is, of course, the middle east, lots going on in lots to report tonight on Develop Mitts on that story. So do stay with us. We will be right back. Hello there. Theres been a lot of cloud and some rain around again today, but over the next couple of days, things are going to look and feel a bit different because it will be turning drier, but its also getting colder. And we started to see that colder air arriving across Northern Areas as a northerly wind is picking up, and that northerly wind is going to blow down across the whole of the country and push this Rain And Drizzle southwards overnight. Following that, there will be a few showers they could be wintry over the tops of the scottish mountains. But with the clearer skies in scotland, were more likely to have a frost. Could be 2 or 3. Further south, where theres more cloud, temperatures are going to be held a bit higher, and that cloud still producing some rainfirst thing. Thatll move away, and then were all in the same boat for tomorrow sunny spells, many places dry. A few showers coming in anywhere exposed to that north to north westerly wind, which will again be strongest around those North Sea coasts. And here, it will feel particularly cold out there. Temperatures maybe not changing too much in scotland and Northern Ireland, but for southern parts of england and wales, its going to be much cooler than its been so far this week. And that colder air is in place again as we head into friday. We lose the northerly wind. We pick up a westerly wind, actually, which will bring cloud and some showery rain into scotland, Northern Ireland. England and wales, its looking generally dry. The winds will be lighter here. Could be a touch of frost, though, early on across england and wales. And with that cold air still in place, temperatures arent changing too much typically 11 or 12 degrees.
