Hello and welcome to todays verified. We start in florida, bracing itself for what could be the worst storm in 100 years. There are huge Traffic Jams across the state as more than 5 Million people respond to Evacuation Orders ahead of Hurricane Milton. We will be live on the ground in just a moment but i can show you first are the pictures from space. It gives you an idea of the size of this monster storm, officials think it could still double in size before making landfall. This is the live Tracking Shot from the national hurricane center. The category four storm is due to make landfall tonight. It is only brushed past mexico, causing flooding. On the florida peninsula, relative calm but they expect wind speeds of up to 160 mph and 3 4 Metre Storm surges. The pictures from tallahassee, where in the next few minutes we expect to get the latest briefing from the florida governor Ron Desantis and other emergency officials. We will carry that live when it starts. We can start this hour by going to florida. What is happening there and around you . We are here in miami, about three and a half hours drive from where The Storm is expected to make an impact. We got in last night and its one of the few airports in the area still open. You can probably hear helicopters above me and see behind me the trucks coming in and out. This is the Staging Ground and Evacuation Centre, the Evacuation Centre a bit further behind us. We were able to cross by their earlier in the day and able to see inside. There are Cots Setup and crates for pets. They didnt want us to film Inside Out of respect for the privacy of people evacuated there, but to give you a Sense Of how big The Storm is, as we follow some of these trucks in, The Storm is so big that you have people who have evacuated from three and a half hours away to here in miami. We will tell you more about evacuation preparations here in a bit. To remind you, florida authorities say this is the 11th Hour for those who havent left the Gulf Coast Area likely to be heavily impacted, now is the time to do so. We have been speaking to people who say they want to so. We have been speaking to people who say they want to evacuate and they have, but evacuate and they have, but there are also those who have there are also those who have chosen to stay in their homes. Chosen to stay in their homes. My chosen to stay in their homes. My colleague Phil Mccann has my chosen to stay in their homes. My colleague Phil Mccann has been speaking to and looking at been speaking to and looking at those preparing for this storm. Those preparing for this storm. So right now on seven news. Ahead of what forecasters say so right now on seven news. Florida is bracing for florida is bracing for Hurricane Milton this morning. Hurricane milton this morning. Milton continues to be milton continues to be a dangerous category five a dangerous category five hurricane, expected to bring hurricane, expected to bring life threatening Storm Surge and dangerous winds along life threatening Storm Surge and dangerous winds along floridas gulf coast. Floridas gulf coast. Time is running out before time is running out before The Storm makes landfall. | The Storm makes landfall. | florida has been warned, florida has been warned, and people living there have and people living there have been preparing and leaving been preparing and leaving in the states biggest in the states biggest Evacuation Effort in years, Evacuation Effort in years, ahead of what forecasters say could be the worst storm to hit in a century. Its been pretty, pretty crazy. Even people that are from tampa and are from florida have told me that this is not normal. Really anxious. We have two young kids. Its scary. Sirens. Parts of the state are now eerily quiet, apart from the warning sirens. Apologies to break out of that but the florida governor has just started his news conference. Just started his news conference. ,. ,. , conference. Cruise throughout the West Coast conference. Cruise throughout the West Coast of conference. Cruise throughout the West Coast of florida conference. Cruise throughout the West Coast of florida have | the West Coast of florida have been working nonstop for weeks to prepare and respond to Hurricane Helene and now to prepare and respond to this new major hurricane. The common virtue has been dedication, dedication to the task at hand, dedication to the task at hand, dedication in responding to help fellow floridians in danger, and dedication to ensuring that Florida Weather is this storm and emerges stronger on the other side. We are prepared and we will respond. I have spoken to the president , we remain in regular contact with fema and we are marshaling all available resources to be able to prepare and respond to Hurricane Milton. I also want to thank the 20 other states who are assisting florida ahead of The Storm. This isjust what assisting florida ahead of The Storm. This is just what we as americans do. We have had opportunities to help other states in the past including most recently in Western North Carolina and it shows the spirit in which these states are stepping up to provide really valued support. We still have a State Of Emergency through 51 florida counties. Hurricane milton is still a major very strong hurricane. It is currently a category four hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. That is just a whisker shy of a category five. And while there erected them around critical Infra Structure like hospitals, Waste Water Treatment facilities and electric infrastructure. Generators have been deployed at shelters, to support sheltering operations. Starlink internet has been deployed across the entire state of florida. We have an of florida. We have an additional 600 ambulances in state of florida. We have an additional 600 ambulances in operation helping in the operation helping in the effort. The state of florida effort. The state of florida has considerable Fuel Reserves has considerable Fuel Reserves ahead of milton, it is staged ahead of milton, it is staged and they will be utilised as and they will be utilised as needed following The Storm. We needed following The Storm. We have already dispatched a lot have already dispatched a lot of fuel in the lead up to this of fuel in the lead up to this but we already have on hand 1. 6 but we already have on hand 1. 6 million gallons of diesel and million gallons of diesel and 1. 1 Million gallons of 1. 1 Million gallons of gasoline. There is no right now gasoline. There is no right now fuel shortage. Fuel shortage. Gasoline. There is no right now fuelshortage. However, demand gasoline. There is no right now fuelshortage. However, demand fuel shortage. However, demand has fuelshortage. However, demand has been extraordinarily high fuel shortage. However, demand has fuelshortage. However, demand has been extraordinarily high and some Gas Stations have run and some Gas Stations have run out to be able to help out to be able to help ameliorate that the florida ameliorate that the Florida Highway Patrol has facilitated Highway Patrol has facilitated 106 long Distance Fuel Tanker escorts with sirens, getting through traffic, totalling almost 1 through traffic, totalling almost1 Million gallons of gasoline from ports in tampa, jacksonville, the everglades, and they are continuing with the Fuel Escorts as we speak. I am in contact with the ports on the West Coast of florida and well see how The Storm impacts those. Clearly there is the chance you could have a major impact on Port Manatee as well as port tampa bay. That could interrupt their ability to receive Fuel Shipments so we are working on contingency is to be able to keep fuel flowing throughout the state of florida. As we saw this new storm develop it was clear that a lot of the hardest hit areas on the West Coast of florida from Hurricane Helene had not had major robust Debris Removal contracts in place or operations in place will stop some of these contractors were good, some were not getting the job done, so you had a major hazard in various islands, sarasota county. This weekend i authorised a mandated 24 7Debris Removal and we took all the Florida Department for transportation and other agency vehicles, brought them from all across the state. They are dedicated to Debris Removal and in a little over 48 hours they were working all through they were working All Through The Night and the wee hours of the night and the wee hours of the morning, and they were able to remove 55,000 yd. Of debris. So thats over 3000 truckloads of debris. It is our estimation that on those Barrier Islands they were able to make a dent in the debris and reduce it by about 50 just from what those agencies were able to do. I want to thank everybody involved in that. It did not stop since this weekend, we are now in a position where it is now the conditions will deteriorate, and so we will have to wind that down. But they did make a difference and there will be less damage from this storm as a result of getting the debris out there they otherwise would have been. The Florida Department of transportation is staging the following assets ahead of The Storm. 156 bridge inspectors, 328 Cut And Toss personnel and 1500 pieces of heavy equipment. Florida national guard, State Guard, fish and wildlife, and Highway Patrol have activated additional personnel in advance of The Storm. We have hundreds of The Storm. We have hundreds of State Search and rescue personnel on hand, 26 teams in total, currently embedded in the potential impact sites along the West Coast to begin immediate Rescue Operations as soon as The Storm passes. The national guard is deploying 6000 Florida National Guardsmen as well as 3000 National Guardsmen from other states, so we are thankful for the support on that. We have 34 Search And Rescue aircraft, including some of the aircraft that have been brought in from other states. We have 500 tactical vehicles including 180 high water vehicles, aerial, Water And GroundSearch And Rescue teams will stop this is the largest Florida National GuardSearch And Rescue mobilisation in the entire history of the state of florida. Our florida State Guard is also deploying almost 200 soldiers, ten maritime cruise, three high water utvs, two Black Hawk helicopters, four drone teams, 15 Cut And Toss crews, two amphibious rescue crews. We want to thank them, and its a dream a couple of years ago that they would be involved, and there was unfair criticism when we stood it up but they have made a huge difference in this Hurricane Season and we will see them continue to do that. We have also worked with the utilities to have the largest staging of Utility Workers in alignment in advance of The Storm at any time in american history. We will have in florida by the time The Storm arrives more than 50,000 linemen. Those linemen are being brought in from places as far away as california. As soon as The Storm passes you will see the assessments and Power Restoration efforts commence immediately. Additionally the state of florida has assisted with the evacuation of 352 Health Care facilities in the potential path of The Storm. 16 hospitals have been evacuated. The state Veterans Nursing Homes are currently located in the cone are all accepting families of their residents to shelter with them. All of those are hurricane proof, all of them outside flood zones, so if you have a Family Member inside a State Nursing Home you can go and shelter with them, that is and shelter with them, that is a safe option and i know the veterans would appreciate it. The federal department of Law Enforcement is deploying an additional 500 out of state Law Enforcement officers who will help respond after The Storm to maintain law and order. There will be a lot of damage from this storm. There will be opportunities for people to try to take advantage of that. My message to you is dont even think about it. We will come down hard on you. You will regret that you tried to do that. So i appreciate all the other folks from out of state who will come into supplement this effort. We need to maintain law and order. We are managing more than 70 active Law Enforcement missions including identifying Posts Storm Response squads and these are really important missions and we are happy for that. We are preparing for milton but we are preparing for milton but we are also still recovering from Hurricane Helene, when helene it we activated the Florida Disaster Fund. It we activated the florida disasterfund. We it we activated the Florida Disaster Fund. We are it we activated the florida disasterfund. We are now accepting donations into the Florida Disaster Fund for both storms, both helene and milton. This is a private fund, affiliated with the state in terms of disaster but it is Tax Deductible donations. We distributed 63 Million after Hurricane Ian to help people largely in south west florida. This is something thats really important, so i have directed Volunteer Florida to keep the fund activated for Hurricane Milton. There has only been infrastructure has storm. Vital infrastructure has been protected and they will operate the largest Search And Rescue operation in the history of florida. Thats the latest at the briefing. We will keep listening in on what officials will say in the coming minutes and come back to it if there is anything significant. We can go back to miami. We broke away to hear all of that. Once we understand the impact of Hurricane Milton, thats when we will know truly what help is needed. Once we understand what the damage looks like and what the damage looks like and what the needs are, the red cross has nearly 1000 people on the ground in florida right now with more on the way as we start to unpack what this disaster looks like. Disaster looks like. You mentioned disaster looks like. You mentioned at disaster looks like. You mentioned at the disaster looks like. You mentioned at the start | disaster looks like. You i mentioned at the start the immense problem here is that you are dealing with something that could be The Storm of the century after a hurricane that sold me so recently hit and you are having to deal with the aftermath of that. Are having to deal with the aftermath of that. Our hearts are heavy aftermath of that. Our hearts are heavy with aftermath of that. Our hearts are heavy with this. Aftermath of that. Our hearts are heavy with this. The are heavy with this. The American Red Cross, we are a disaster response organisation. This is what we do and what we train to do and what we prepare for. However, it doesnt make it any easier because remember, the people who are evacuating, those are our friends, those are ourfriends, neighbours, Family Members. This is very real for them. Neighbours, Family Members. This is very realfor them. So anything we can do along the way, this is not an ideal situation. Two back to back hurricanes. In light of the Climate Crisis we are facing, the red cross knows we have to respond more frequently, quicker and more rigorously than we have responded before. I know you are hugely busy on a day like today so we are grateful for your time on Bbc News and thank you forjoining us on the programme. Stay with us on the programme. Stay with us because we have the latest on the ground from all our teams and guests and people there who are dealing with all of this was that these are some of this was that these are some of the live pictures as the category four storm heads in are due to hit at two oclock in the morning local time. The scenes in florida. We can show you pictures from westminster in london. In the next few minutes we are likely to whittle down from three to two the final two candidates in the Leadership Race for the Conservative Party. Viewers in the uk will have full coverage of that as the latest vote is announced. James cleverly, Kemi Badenoch and robertjenrick are the final three. That will become two in around five minutes time. You are live with Bbc News. As matthew was saying just then, we will bring you full coverage on the latest in the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party. As the list of candidates will shortly be whittled down to the final two. James cleverly, Kemi Badenoch and robertjenrick are currently in the running, after surviving Yesterdays Vote which saw Tom Tugendhat, a relatively moderate figure in the party, knocked out of the contest. The partys 121 mps have been casting their votes to eliminate another candidate today, with results expected shortly. Our political correspondent Ben Wright is standing by for those results at the palace of westminster. Six will become two. Thats ri. Ht. Six will become two. Thats right the six will become two. Thats right. The final six will become two. Thats right. The final round six will become two. Thats right. The final round of. Right. The final round of voting. As you reminded people, this is the final part of the first stage of this contest. Under Conservative Party rules, Tory Mps narrow down the field of candidates to a final pair and that pair then go to a vote of Conservative Party membership, around 140,000, 150,000 people, we are not sure of the exact number, but they are the people who will decide the next leader of the Conservative Party in the end. We will only get the result of the contest at the beginning of november, Novemberthe The Contest at the beginning of november, november the 2nd. This has been a long and fascinating process so far. It has lurched around all over the place was up a few weeks ago robertjenrick, one of the candidates on the right, looked pretty unassailable in his lead of the contest. But yesterday, he was vying with Kemi Badenoch for second place. It is a Knife Edge Position that the two of them are in at the moment. The real surprise has beenJames Cleverly, the former foreign secretary, former Party Chair and former home secretary, he yesterday leapfrogged his rivals to take Top Billing on the ballot. He got 39 votes compared to robertjenrick s 31 and Kemi Badenochs 30. Yesterday Shadow Security MinisterTom Tugendhat was knocked out. The Question Today is where his 20 supporters went. As you said, there are only 121 Tory Mps, so just a small shift in support could make a massive difference. I would be very surprised if James Cleverly was not one of the final two in the race. Nobody here has any idea who the second candidate will be. In terms of where they sit on the ideological spectrum, take us through that because James Cleverly in many ways is more of a centrist. Kemi Badenoch And Robertjenrick are much more to the right of the party. It is quite hard to label them like that. You are broadly right, though, James Kelly i think is seen as more of the centrist candidate and certainly attracting some support from the one Nation Caucus of Tory Mps, some of them. He was also a passionate brexiteer. Compared to Robert Jenrick, who wasnt, and voted for remain. But since that vote, i think he has certainly tried to position himself as a standard bearer of the right. He quit rishi sunak s government over immigration, the rwanda plan, and has put bringing down immigration and having a cap on net migration, as a central part of his pitch. He thinks its absolutely essential that the Conservative Party has a tough line on immigration. Then you have Kemi Badenoch, who has passionate supporters within the parliamentary tory party and some very fierce detractors too. Critics say she is the candidate most likely to pick a fight in an empty room. She doesnt shy away from controversy. She is also if Sam Poling is to be believed, the candidate to the tory grassroots tend to like the most. It will be really interesting and not inconsequential if she doesnt get through to the final two. Thats broadly where they sit on the comic spectrum. They all face the same challenge, how to rebuild the party which took an absolute pummelling at the general election. So far none of them have set out a full perception but we are about to get that result. As chairman of the 1922 committee and Returning Officer in the committee and Returning Officer in the leadership contest, i can in the leadership contest, i can now in the leadership contest, i can now give you the results of the fourth can now give you the results of the fourth and final parliamentary ballot, which is good parliamentary ballot, which is good news. 120 mp5 voted and i can report good news. 120 mp5 voted and i can report the numbers of votes for each can report the numbers of votes for each candidate as follows. Kemi for each candidate as follows. Kemi badenoch 42 votes. James cleverty Kemi Badenoch 42 votes. James cleverly 37 votes. And Robert Jenrick cleverly 37 votes. And Robert Jenrick 41 cleverly 37 votes. And Robert Jenrick 41 votes. As a result of that
