More than Five Million people in florida are under Evacuation Orders with the impending arrival of Hurricane Milton. Lets Ta Ke lets take you to the live tracker of the Storm. President Joe Biden says getting out is a matter of life and death. Lets take you to the live pictures in tampa, florida. This is where the Storm is expected to hit and that is where President Biden advises people to leave, a very popular is part of the state. This is coming less than two weeks since another powerful hurricane hit the area, Hurricane Helene. Daveyis davey is still piled up after Storm-helene'>Storm Helene two weeks ago and now people are being told they have to leave again. Mandatory Evacuation Orders are in place for nearly 6 Million people as Hurricane Milton approaches. Many are heading to safety as authorities worn Storm-surge'>Storm Surges could be up to 15 feet and warnings that if you stay when told to leave you may not survive. We can rebuild homes, we can rebuild businesses, we can get people back on theirfeet, but only if theyre safe and they survive the Storm. Were not going to be able to bring people back who stay behind in 10 or 15 feet of Storm-surge'>Storm Surge. Hurricane milton is intensifying now a category five with speeds around i65mph. This crew from the national Oceanic And Atmospheric Association Dubbed Hurricane Hunters flew through it yesterday and felt its power. Damn on the ground, residents are doing what they can to protect their properties before they leave. But theres real fear here. Apprehensive, really anxious. We have two young kids. Its scary. Over 50 counties are now under a state of emergency, but not everyone is deciding to flee. We got four, five gallon cans. Tommy hall and his family live near venice beach, and theyve chosen to weather the incoming Storm. We got gas, food, two generators, portable Air Conditioners to push around to room to room, sol think we might do ok. But Weather Forecasters are now warning of the severity and dangers of the Storm. One forecaster broke down on air because of fears of what is to come. Everything that is going on it really does affect you emotionally. Yes, my delivery of trying to carry an audience through these types of emergencies, i think it has become certainly not the same non alarmist style it was before. Miltons strength has already brought flooding along the mexican coast and downed Power Lines and trees. But the us is bracing itself for much worse with official saying that milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record when it makes landfall later today. We will be live in florida in a moment. Our correspondence has been speaking to some people who have been preparing for the arrival of that Storm. Arrival of that Storm. Here in tam a arrival of that Storm. Here in tampa there arrival of that Storm. Here in tampa there is arrival of that Storm. Here in tampa there is a arrival of that Storm. Here in tampa there is a Sense Arrival of that Storm. Here in tampa there is a Sense Of. Arrival of that Storm. Here in L Tampa there is a Sense Of time running out ahead of miltons really now imminent arrival. The streets in the city have been eerily quiet, hardly anyone is around. The few people who we have seen have been preparing their homes or their offices for the Storm, boarding things up, moving things around. One of the things around. One of the things that is quite shocking is, as you can see around me, the devastation that is still here from Hurricane Helene which hit two weeks ago. There is an enormous amount of debris around where i am in tampa and the concern is the massive surge which will come with milton could lift up all this debris, move it around, cause even more damage. And the fear is that the surge with milton could be 12 feet or perhaps even more hi, compared to that which was less with helene. There is a lot of work going on already to think about how the community will respond afterwards, but first of all they have got to get through that Storm which is nowjust really hours away from arriving here. Lets speak to cbs correponesdent Nicole Valdes who is in fort meyers. Brings up today on what people are saying to you. Are they are heeding the warnings and leaving . Good morning, the answer to that is, yes, a lot| answer to that is, yes, a lot of people taking this very seriously. In fact many have already evacuated areas. We are just a few hours south of tampa where your correspondence was just speaking. There are a lot of areas here very close to the water. It is either by a river, the coast or potentially islands and they are all under mandatory evacuation. Several issued curfews last night. Downtown, where we are standing now, we have seen in the past a catastrophic Storm-surge'>Storm Surge, we are talking several feet of water covering the road behind me. Businesses like this one are not wanting to take a risk with Hurricane Milton with a forecast of a potential eight to 12 feet of Storm-surge'>Storm Surge. They are using everything including plastic wrap, sandbags and something which mimics an Oil Boom as they are hoping to divert that water away from buildings like that one. It is really key for those who own these businesses to try to protect as much as they can, knowing what could happen in just a matter of hours. Hoar just a matter of hours. How resilient just a matter of hours. How resilient is just a matter of hours. How resilient is an just a matter of hours. How resilient is an area just a matter of hours. It has been a couple of years since hurricane also devastated parts of fort myers. Resilient is a great word to use. That hurricane left its mark on that community, one of many Storms that has. Unfortunately, so many are still trying to rebuild from that and now they are forced to stop that effort to focus on preparing for this Storm. If you look backjust two weeks ago, helene also did quite a number of damage in areas like this one with several inches of water On The Road where i am standing alone a few weeks ago. This is absolutely a community that has faced challenges, that has tried to rise from devastation, but also feels a bit exhausted to have taken to newly receive Storm after Storm and Pick Up The Pieces and start from scratch every time. We are hearing that President Biden will visit florida. What you think people there who you have been speaking to want from the right now . I have been speaking to want from the right now . Of course there are so many people who still need help, whether that is in the way of federal resources or just someone to talk to. So there is a lot of that still for him. Working undercover for the fbi. The Working Undercoverfor the fbi. The fbi has arrested a 27 year old suspect originally from Afghanistan Over what is believed to be a foiled Terror Plot that would have targeted the united states on Election Day. The Suspect NauseaAhmed Tal Hedy is accused of planning this attack in sympathy with or in conjunction with the islamic state group. There is evidence laid out by prosecutors in some documents that were unsealed on tuesday. They point to a couple of different things, saying the suspect was in Chat Rooms and groups that were sympathetic to the islamic state. Also there were elements of texts and pictures of documents downloaded to his phone and he also made donations to the islamic state group. In the end he was detained after he tried to buy some high powered rifles and ammunition from two undercover fbi agents. In terms of some of the details we are getting about the actual plot, apparently the suspect allegedly told prosecutors that he and a younger accomplice were hoping to die as martyrs in a large attack on a big gathering of people. Of course, you could imagine on Election Day here in the us many people will be heading out to Balloting And Polling stations across the country and that might have been the type of place they were hoping to target. In terms of the bigger picture, National Security officials have been warning for many months now that the Threat Picture has been changing across the united states, that there is a higher threat level, and they say that in part is due to the conflict that has been ongoing in the middle east. Of course, there are no direct links here, but they are saying they have been some potential threats and they have been thwarted and they were targeted at american citizens. We have less than a month to go until the american election and you can imagine how something like this might affect the actual election itself, not in terms of the casualties and the numbers that could be killed in this type of attack, but what a threat like this could do to the election itself in terms of the election itself in terms of the temperature, the way this Election And Campaign has been carried out. So officials and police will be on the lookout for similar threats as it gets closer to Election Day. Around the world and across the uk, this is Bbc News. Theres been fresh fighting on the border between lebanon and israel. Attacks, too, On Haifa and beirut. And the Israel Defense forces have just issued new warnings for people in southern lebanon. A quarter of the country is now under Evacuation Orders. The israeli Prime Minister has warned the lebanese people they face destruction on the same scale as gaza unless they reject hezbollah. Benjamin netanyahu said the group needed to stop fighting or lebanon would topple into the abyss of a long war. He asserted israel had killed another possible replacement for the assassinated head of hezbollah, hassan nasrallah. But the idf later said it could not confirm the death of hashem safieddine. Lebanese media said the latest israeli attacks had caused devastation in the South And East of the capital, beirut. Joining me now from haifa is our international correspondent lyse doucet. Yes, you join us here In Haifa in northern israel and behind us that is the port which has come under attack this week. That is the first time in 18 years that the city of haifa has been struck by rockets fired by hezbollah. The first time it happened on monday and israeli defense forces are investigating why five of those missiles were able to bypass Israels Air defences. Just before i joined Israels Air defences. Just before ijoined you we were getting reports of what the israeli police are calling a Terrorist Attack not far from here and there are some casualties. We will give you the latest on that when we get it. There has also been at least one salvo of rockets fired into this area this morning. We heard the explosions. It didnt land here In Haifa, not far away in a city where prime Minister Netanyahu has a private residence. We have not heard any reports of casualties in that. So hezbollah continues to have the ability to Fire Missiles into northern israel despite israeli Military Escalation in targeting hezbollah both in the lebanese capital beirut, as well as in the south where we heard yesterday that they were expanding their operations to the south west. In the past few minutes the israeli defense forces say that in the past 2a hours they say there were 230 targets in lebanon and in gaza as well. Lets get a bit of perspective on what israel is hoping to achieve. Joining me now is brigadier general amir avivi. He isa he is a former senior commander in the israeli defense forces. Thank you forjoining us. Pleasure. Thank you for oining us. Pleasureh thank you for oining us. Pleasure. ~ ~ ,. ,. , pleasure. We keep hearing from israel pleasure. We keep hearing from israel that pleasure. We keep hearing from israel that it pleasure. We keep hearing from israel that it is pleasure. We keep hearing from israel that it is a pleasure. We keep hearing from israel that it is a limited israel that it is a limited operation in lebanon, but what we hearfrom lebanese civilians is that it feels anything but limited, particularly in the capital beirut, where doctors are complaining of having to treat civilians in what they describe as the indiscriminate attacks that israel has described as targeted. Israel sa s it is described as targeted. Israel says it is a described as targeted. Israel says it is a limited described as targeted. Israel says it is a limited operation | says it is a limited operation and israeli forces are operating very close to the border on the lebanese side. There were huge structures in order to launch a massacre as hamas did on the 7th of october. There are bombs and the israeli defense forces are dismantling all this infrastructure along the border. But when we talk about hezbollah overall it is the leadership, the headquarters, the huge Terror Organisation and israel is hitting the Terror Organisation all over lebanon, including in their headquarters in beirut. The aim is never targeted to citizens, always to a military force, but we know that like hamas they place their headquarters in civilian areas. Israel asks all the time for civilians to move out of the areas where it has built its Military Infrastructure and attacks hezbollah whilst hezbollah is hitting civilians on purpose In Haifa and other places. Luckily the Air Defences managing to cope with that and also the citizens that are going into shelter to minimise israeli casualties. Shelter to minimise israeli casualties. , ~. , casualties. You know very well the history casualties. You know very well the history of casualties. You know very well the history of israeli casualties. You know very well the history of israeli military. The history of israeli military operations in lebanon and how Ground Operations did involve soldiers getting bogged down. The israeli media is now discussing the risks of the Ground Invasion continuing to expand and with it all of the risks of confronting hezbollah on its own terrain. Do you see these risks before them . I these risks before them . I dont think it is the Ground Excursion expanding much more than what it is already. Israel does not have a plan to go really into the whole area of South Lebanon or beyond. The whole Ground Operation is concentrated on the few kilometres along the border were hezbollah built all this infrastructure that needs to be dismantled. Israel will try to create a Buffer Zone to return 60,000 israeli displaced citizens that have been displaced for 11 months whilst hezbollah was shooting at the towns. We will create security for the citizens of the north and this is what israel is doing. Just looking ahead to a few hours per time and the big event of the day and it will be that Telephone Call between the israeli Prime Minister and the us President Joe Biden. We understand it will mainly focus on the Targets Israel is now looking at in unexpected retaliatory strike on iran after that barrage of 180 ballistic missiles, a strike that iran said was in retaliation for israels assassinations. We will keep an eye on that and see what emerges from that Telephone Call, what it tells us about the days to come. For now, back to you and goodbye from us In Haifa. ,. ,. , haifa. Millions of floridians have been told to evacuate before the arrival of Hurricane Milton. Im joined by our weather presenter, tomasz schafernaker. Thank you for coming into the studio. You have been tracking the path of the Storm. Tell us where it is now and when and where it is now and when and where it is likely to hit. It where it is likely to hit. It is where it is likely to hit. It is closing in on florida, that is closing in on florida, that is for sure and is just passing the North West and cuba and we are talking about a landfall in the matter of hours now. All the matter of hours now. All the Computer Models have been very consistent in where this Storm is going to strike and the ominous thing is it is heading for the Bay Area of tampa, so said Peters Bay in tampa, so said Peters Bay in tampa, a very populated part of florida. The core of the Storm itself is not huge but the impacts will cover most of florida and beyond. We are talking about a couple of days of the awful weather across that part of the world. But the crucial thing will be where exactly the core of Milton Hits and that will have a very big bearing on how bad this Storm-surge'>Storm Surge is going to be in tampa, the Storm-surge'>Storm Surge that is being forecast currently is expected to be historic, around ten to 15 feet. That is what the Hurricane Centre in florida is predicting. Their Computer Models generate these results. It will only take a little shift or a wobble of the Storm was mccaw to the north or the south to change the height of that surge. But the point is the Storm is heading for the coast and it will probably impact the coast pretty much at a 90 Degrees Angle almost, which is the worst Case Scenario when it does come to pushing a mound of Sea Water and 90 of the time deaths come from these Storm-surge'>Storm Surges, which the national Hurricane Center often describes as and survivable. Nearly 20 years ago Hurricane Katrina was a category five Storm but crucially when it made landfall it did weaken. Is that possible with milton . It did weaken. Is that possible with milton . Yes, that is what is predicted with milton. 0ver| is predicted with milton. Over the next few Hours Milton will be moving into a somewhat different part of the gulf of mexico. We are not talking huge distances, butjust enough, and itjust distances, butjust enough, and it just so distances, butjust enough, and itjust so happens that distances, butjust enough, and it just so happens that the head of Miltons Landfall very close to florida through the depth of the atmosphere there is something called wind shear. It is basically wind, as the word suggests, but it is varying wins in a Direction And Height through the atmosphere. Hurricane is dont like that. Even though hurricanes are very powerful and destructive systems, they thrive in what we would describe as a very calm and still atmosphere. Very unstable in terms of the Storm is for me, but they dont like any wind disruption, it is like blowing out a flame on a candle. This is what will happen with this wind shear. It will slowly disrupt this intense circulation and when that happens the thinking is milton will weaken somewhat. But here is another point to make. Using the word weaken is probably not the best term. The Storm will be less intense, it will still be very powerful. Yes, it will not be a five, but it will still be a major hurricane, maybe three or four, and that is still catastrophic for coastal areas. And that is still catastrophic for coastal areas. Thank you very much for coastal areas. Thank you very much for for coastal areas. Thank you very much for putting for coastal areas. Thank you very much for putting that i for coastal areas. Thank you i very much for putting that into context. An incredibly worrying time for people in florida. Lets take you to the scene live in tampa. It comes as the us President Joe Biden says leaving is a matter of life and death. You are watching Bbc News. Low pressure has been driving our weather and is pulling away into the North Sea but we still have remnants of france producing rain on the other thing is you can see more of a northerly component to the win, so feeling cold in scotland. In fact, feeling quite raw. Through the afternoon we hang on to the rain in the north and the east but it will brighten up the east but it will brighten up across southern parts of england, South Wales and Northern Scotland with a few showers. Some of those showers will be down to about six or 700 metres. Temperatures eight to nine in Northern Scotland, but generally we are looking at 12 to 17 which will feel quite pleasant if you are in any sunshine. This evening and overnight at band of Cloud And Rain continues to sink southwards, we can all the time, clearerskies southwards, we can all the time, clearer skies follow on behind and there will be wintry showers down to 300 400 metres across parts of scotland. And you can see the blue in the charts temperatures could be minus three or minus four, so a frosty start in the north. As we had through to tomorrow the cold Weather Sink southwards, as represented by the blues, eventually chasing away the milder yellows through the day because we are all going to be in this northerly wind. We start with a cloud and some showery outbreaks of rain in the far south first thing, then a lot of dry weather, if showers around, a lot of those will be on when word posts and it will feel cold in winter. Temperatures are low for the time of year anyway. Add on the Wind Chill and it will feel colder than that. It will be a frosty start on friday, but widespread frost and a lot of dry weather for southern scotland, england, wales and Northern Ireland. We have got some Rain Across Scotland and later in the day that we get into Northern Ireland and the cold air is already in place, so it will feel quite cold. As we had from friday into the weekend we can see we have got a ridge of High Pressure. Yes, there is a Weather Front crossing us, but essentially on sunday the High Pressure will keep Weather Fronts at bay. During the course of saturday there will be some rain in the north, drier in the south. It is looking like a decent day for most as we head into sunday. This is Bbc News, the headlines.
