Good evening from Tel Aviv, where rockets have just been fired towards central israel and this city, which has been marking one year since the hamas attacks of October 7th, at the same time that israel has been striking targets in southern beirut. As we were about to come on air, several ballistic missiles were fired into israel for the third time today. Our team took cover as Israels Defence systems swung into action. Its believed this latest attack came from lebanon. Earlier, there were rockets fired into israel from gaza, and from yemen. So this evening, millions of people across central israel would have rushed to shelters today, when services have been taking place for the 1,200 israelis killed and more than 250 taken hostage in the hamas attacks exactly one year ago. From dawn till dusk this day, across the land and around the world, people have been stopping to remember those who died. It was 6. 30 in the morning on October 7th, when fighters from hamas and other groups crossed the southern Borderfrom Gaza and inflicted the worst single Mass Killing of israelis in the nation s history. The gunmen from hamas broke through the border fence, rampaging through nearby villages, kibbutzim, Military Posts and a music festival. They torched homes, shooting and killing indiscriminately. Hamas is designated as a Terrorist Organisation by the uk and other governments. According to israel, 251 of its citizens and foreigners were taken hostage into gaza. One year on, around 100 people remain unaccounted for. Tonight we ll look at how the events of last year have changed this country and the region including In Gaza, where more than 40,000 have been killed in israels response. Israeli bombs continued to fall on the territory today, and on top of that, there was more Fighting And Air strikes across the northern border with lebanon. But we start with the day of commemorations here in israel, as a nation remembers one year on. There are tears are shared. There is a solidarity in this nations sorrow, uniting strangers and friends, rich and poor, young and old. Asa as a still traumatised people mourn, thousands gathered today in southern israel, remembering the 383 people killed at the nova music festival. Whats also being mourned the death of promise, because so many young lives yet to be lived were snatched away. So many Air Strikes over the last ten days had collapsed buildings and driven families away and already this evening in the last 90 minutes, we have had the first of the warnings that tend to come at this time of night when we get to around midnight local time, telling people to leave before fresh Air Strikes start. But they have been happening through the day to day. We have seen plumes of smoke on the Road Close to the Airport And Smoke on the Road Close to the airportand in smoke on the Road Close to the airport and in the south of lebanon today, again, that momentum has really built. The israeli Air Force say that in just an hour, really built. The israeli Air Force say that injust an hour, 100 of their planes attacked more than 110 hezbollah targets. There has also been a fresh warning to data people in the south of lebanon to stay out of the sea and to stay away from the beaches. Fishermen have been warned not to take to the rivers and their boats because israel say that they will begin a maritime operation now against hezbollah as well, because they think that attacks are being planned and carried out in the waterways. More than a fifth of this country have been displaced in the last two weeks or so and again, clive, it seems that nobody here can look forward to any kind of respite. Indeed not. Thank you, Anna Foster reporting live from beirut. Israel is continuing to exchange fire with hezbollah and hamas, and more Air Strikes have been carried out on Gaza And Beirut today. The israeli military says its investigating how five rockets fired overnight by hezbollah from lebanon, managed to penetrate Air Defences and hit the Port City of haifa. With the latest from the northern border, here s lucy williamson. The gaps in Israels Defences are still being tested. A rocket fired from lebanon landed near a hospital, sending shrapnel and explosives through the Car Park as patients lay metres away. This doctor left his car here five minutes before the rocket hit, his Daughters Car Seat still intact inside the shattered frame. Im a lucky man. It hit the car, not me. I have a Little Girl also. Two years old. And with every boom and siren, she gets anxious. It is hard to be in this situation one year, its exhausting situation. Suddenly, more sirens, the panic here sharper this time. Seconds later, the thud of rockets. Three, four five, six . Thats a lot. Just coming to the Safe Room here after the siren sounded again at the hospital this morning. Theres been a barrage, 20, 30, a0 interceptions. Some of them sounded very close. 0utside, Fresh Smoke Marks where rockets have landed. Another has hit a house. A elderly neighbour, frozen in shock, barely registering her injury. Bomb disposal teams are called in. Since last night we have a lot of incoming rockets. The coming weeks will be very challenging. 0ur Town has not been evacuated. Israels Ground Invasion of lebanon is triggering a response, but a year after the hamas attacks, many here see war as the solution to this Border Conflict and invasion as the best defence. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says this country faces enemies far and wide, from hamas In Gaza to the powerful Militia Group Hezbollah in lebanon. There are adversaries in syria to the north, and then there s the houthi movement in yemen. Israel says all her enemies are ultimately backed by iran. Jeremy bowen looks now at the multiple Battle Lines running across the Middle East. Israel is upping the tempo in lebanon. Notjust more destruction in beirut, ordering residents out of civilian areas, then bombing Places Israel says are strong points for irans ally hezbollah. In south lebanon, israel has flattened border villages. To beef up the invasion force, the israelis are mobilising thousands more reservists. Prime minister netanyahu, up near the lebanese border, was briefed about the damage Israels Offensive is doing to hezbollah. But now he must decide where this but now he must decide where this goes and where it might end. Goes and where it might end. Israels dilemmas, challenges israels dilemmas, challenges and divisions come together and divisions come together in this square in Tel Aviv. In this square in Tel Aviv. Just across the road. 0ver there is Israels 0ver there is israels military headquarters, military headquarters, and theyre making big and theyre making big decisions at the moment about how decisions at the moment about how exactly to respond to irans ballistic Missile Attack on this country last week. And here is the place where supporters of the israeli hostages In Gaza have been holding a vigil, and they are worried that a country fighting on multiple fronts will make the hostages a low priority. This Dinner Table has been waiting for the israelis held In Gaza now for a year. To do as the americans ask. I think israel will listen, because we need them for the next stages. And i think. I dont think it will stop our response. We are at a very delicate point in time and we are going for an escalation. Therefore, for escalation, we need the americans. The israelis released video of their soldiers in lebanon. They also want their enemies to fear them again after hamas inflicted their worst defeat a year ago. Injerusalem, a leading right Wing Politician said this is a time for strength, not diplomacy. If we finish this round and we are the strong, wild boy in the region, in the area, there is going to be quiet, everything will be ok. If we are going to show weakness, we are in big trouble. Very big trouble. Understanding that we are, the Middle East is a jungle with different rules. That intransigence dismays those palestinians who, despite everything, believe in a negotiated peace. If the israelis continue to treat this part of the world as the jungle, then definitely the Law Of The Jungle will be strength. If we continue to believe that our muscles are better than our brains, then this is an imminent result. We have to grow up collectively as humans. Dreams of peace between israel and the palestinians withered into the walls and Checkpoints Betweenjerusalem and the west bank. Now the risk is a new era of a much wider war. Jeremy bowen, Bbc News, jerusalem. Israels response to hamass unprecedented Cross Border Attack has had a devastating impact on the people of gaza. Last 0ctober, areas across the north of the territory were targeted and israel began a full scale Ground Invasion at The End of the month. Gaza city was pounded, along with other urban centres. Hundreds of thousands of people began to flee south. Then the airstrikes spread to southern cities. By The End of january, more than half of gazas buildings had been damaged or destroyed. An analysis of Satellite Data now shows that close to two thirds of buildings across the Gaza Strip have been hit. The hamas run Gaza Health Ministry says almost 42,000 people have been killed, most of them civilians. Israel will not allow journalists, including the bbc into gaza, but Fergal Keane has been talking to some of the people affected, and his report relies on material gathered by trusted local teams, living and working on the ground. His report contains upsetting scenes. A year of the sights and sounds of war. For the last 12 months, our cameras recorded the lives of gazans under fire. In the suburb of shejaiya, the Israeli Army said it detected hamas fighters in this building during intensive fighting. Like here on a different operation, they used dogs to search. When troops entered, they found Muhammed Bharand his family. The Search Dog attacked muhammed, who had down S Syndrome and autism. Translation it stays in front of my eyes the whole time. It never leaves me at all. We couldnt save him, neither from them or from the dog. The troops gave muhammed some basic treatment. Two of his brothers were arrested. His family was ordered to leave. But the soldiers then left the wounded muhammed alone in order, they said, to help troops who had been attacked nearby. A week later, when fighting here ended, the bhars returned to find muhammed dead. This is the bloodstained sofa where the dog attacked him. Three months on, Muhammeds Room has been left in darkness. Brotherjibreel says the soldiers abandoned his disabled sibling and wants an independent investigation. Translation they could have treated him much better than they did, but theyjust put some gauze on him, as if they did a quick, careless job. Whether he lived or died didnt seem to matter to them. At the time, the army said it regretted any harm to civilians in combat operations, and Accused Hamas of using them as human shields. Muhammed is buried in an alley beside his home. The war means its not safe to go to the cemetery here. She sings softly. Muhammed, his sister here singing him a lullaby, and malak, who lost her father, are just two stories of gaza out of many thousands. And the war goes on. Fergal keane, Bbc News. Coleen rooney and Rebekah Vardy are in another legal battle, in the wake of their Libel Case two years ago that became known as wagatha christie. A judge ruled then that it was substantially true that Mrs Vardy had leaked private information about Mrs Rooney to the press, and ordered Rebekah Vardy to pay 90 of the legal costs. But that bill has reached more than £1. 8m, and her lawyers are arguing that some of those costs are unreasonable. Despite poor weather and an approaching hurricane, the European Space agency has successfully launched a mission to study an Asteroid System. Its all part of plans to protect the earth from any flying Space Rocks in the future, as Pallab Ghosh explains. Go hera, go falcon, go spacex. On its way to an Asteroid System7 Million miles away to develop a Defence System to protect the earth from being hit by dangerous objects from outer space. Its to follow a Nasa Mission which tried to deliberately deflect an asteroid called dimorphos. Nasas Dart Spacecraft crashed into dimorphos two years ago. A telescope captured the Dust And Debris that was hurled into space. Hera is on a two yearjourney which takes it past mars and eventually to its destination. Its going to take a closer look at the damage with a battery of instruments. The spacecraft will come within 200 metres of dimorphos and deploy two shoebox sized mini spacecraft that will look closer still. What did dart actually due to this asteroid . Is there a crater . How big is that crater . Did we actually, instead of making a crater, deform the entire body . Thats what we think might have happened. An asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs 66 Million years ago. Collisions with smaller objects occur more often, like this giant Meteor Strike in russia in 2013. The hope is that next time, well be better prepared. Pallab ghosh, Bbc News. And before we look at the weather, just to tell you that the annual Draconid Meteor Shower should be visible for the next few nights. The Shooting Stars will appear as streaks of light in the evening sky, just above the big dipper constellation, as long as skies are clear. Meteor showers occur when the earth passes through the debris of a comet or an asteroid. The debris, usually chunks of rock or ice, hit the atmosphere and burn up, sending out light. Time for a look at the weather. Heres ben rich. The skies may not always to be clear im afraid. In fact low pressure is the Name Of The Game for the next couple of days. And one of these areas of low pressure is this shield of cloud and this is actually an ex hurricane, x hurricane kirk. A deep low which thankfully will stay to the south of us. We have our own area of low pressure to contend with, that will bring showers and then the two join forces, swing away eastwards and leave us with Cold Air for The End of the week. That is the broad picture for the next few days. 0ver broad picture for the next few days. Over the last few hours we have seen some really heavy downpours of rain pushing up from the south, some heavy, thundery showers likely to continue moving up into southern england, wales, the midlands, Northern England and Northern Ireland by The End of the night. Across the northern half of scotland it stays cloudy, damp and drizzly. For the time being things relatively mild through the Night But Tomorrow morning we will start off with this band of Heavy Rain across Northern England, Northern Ireland, Southern Scotland moving slowly northwards with parts of South East scotland having a wet day indeed. To the north of that, cloud, spots of rain and drizzle. Further south are a mix of sunny spells and heavy downpours, temperatures north to south between ten and 18 degrees. Ahead to wednesday, still some showers are longer spells of rain but all tending to drift eastwards behind that we get into a strong northerly wind, that wind picking up as the day wears on and have a look at those temperatures in northern scotland, eight or 9 degrees and that colder air is set to sink southwards for The End of the week.
