The last couple of hours. The explosion follows further israeli strikes in the City And Hezbollah has also fired dozens of rockets into northern israel. sirens this was the scene in northern israel in the last couple of hours. Sirens have been sounding around the city of haifa in anticipation of further Rocket Attacks from southern lebanon. The city has been hit by rockets fired from lebanon. The Israeli Military says its investigating how five rockets fired by hezbollah managed to penetrate Israels Air defences. The rockets hit a restaurant, a house and a main road, injuring five people. These are live pictures from the lebanese capital. The city experienced one of its most intense bombardments so far in this conflict over the weekend. A Bbc Reporter on the ground heard six blasts and drones buzzing overhead. Authorities say at least 25 people were Killed. Earlier the Israeli Military said it had Killed a senior hezbollah commander. The group has not yet commented. For the latest heres our Middle East correspondent, hugo bachega. Overnight and the most intense israeli Air Strikes in this war. Explosion. In the morning, more Air Strikes. This video appears to capture secondary explosions, a possible sign that weapons were being stored there. This place was hit about 12 hours ago and theres still smoke coming out of the rubble. There is a heavy smell in the air and there is destruction all around including some Buildings Farfrom here. I can count at least three underground floors. Its all destroyed. Israel accuses hezbollah of hiding weapons among civilians, an Accusation Hezbollah denies. This building, residents told us, included a sweet shop. We found a bag with the name of the shop on the right, next to the Tail Fin of a mortar, unlikely to have been used by the Israeli Military. We couldnt stay long. A group of men arrived, ordering us to leave. In gaza, Israels War against hamas continues. Israel bombed another School Housing displaced residents, saying hamas set up a Control Centre in the building. A nearby mosque was also attacked. Israel said hamas was operating there. The two strikes Killed at least 26 people, according to gazas health ministry. This woman lost her daughter and grandchildren. Translation please god, defeat netanyahu. Please god, defeat israel. I hope god defeats you, america. You have made us cry over our children, grandchildren, and loved ones. My heart is breaking. Back in lebanon, the missiles come, not only at night. Israel is not backing down in its war against hezbollah. In beirut theres no respite. Hugo bachega, bbc news, beirut. During a visit To Beirut the united nations refugee chief, filippo grandi, warned of violations of international humanitarian law in the ongoing war in lebanon, and said he was disheartened by what he called the Paralysis Of Political Action to help secure a ceasefire. Here, i wasjust here, i was just briefed here, i wasjust briefed by about egregious violation in respect of Health Facilities in particular that have been impacted in various locations of lebanon. I would venture to say, although these things require proper investigations and assessments, but on face value, when civilian houses are destroyed and people have to flee, that is also affect in civilian infrastructure so i would consider that that is not in line with the rules of law. We will be crossing to israel in the next 20 or so minutes where we will be seeing some commemorations to mark one year since the october seven attacks by hamas. Thank you forjoining me. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. This continuing our coverage on the middle East Conflict Conflict we will see commemorations across israel today, marking one year since the Oct 7th attacks, in which around 1,200 people were Killed in those attacks and more than 250 taken hostage. Three 97 people are still being held captive. Our international editor, Jeremy Bowen travelled to Kibuutz Kfar Azr close to Israels Border with gaza. He sent us this report. The survivors of the attack on Kibbuutz Kfar Asr have not not come back to live here. The ruins have not been touched. Kfar azr on the border was one of the first targets of hamas. They Killed 62 people here. They took 19 into gaza as hostages. Buzzing that buzz is from an israeli drone heading to gaza. Later we heard Air Strikes. Bereaved families and a Grieving Nation were promised total victory over hamas by their prime minister. A year on, hamas are still fighting. The ground around one house has been excavated. The home of a man and his fiance, both Killed by hamas. His father spent weeks looking for his sons head, he did not find it. A neighbour said there was a nightmare on every corner. We are still inside the trauma. We are not in Post Trauma like people said. We are still here. We are still in the war. My victory, i will be here with my son and daughter, with my grandchild and living peacefully. For israelis, Kfar Azr and all the other places that hamas attacked, have become repositories of a deep and still raw national trauma and the horror that happenend here has, for the vast majority of israelis, absolutelyjustified everything that israel has done since then. A year ago, israeli troops were still fighting hamas when they led us into Kfar Azr three days after the attack. The year of war since then ripped away any illusion that the Middle East could be peaceful without resolving conflicts. Hamas fighters lying where they were Killed were seen by israelis as enemies funded by iran to destroy their state. And the sight of dead israelis being carried out of the ruins brought back the Nazi Holocaust that Killed 6 millionjews. These soldiers were being deployed north to the border with lebanon. A year later, Israel And Iran are in direct conflict, plummeting towards all out war. Israels prime Minister Netanyahu, promised a mighty vengeance. His Defence Minister said they were fighting Human Animals in gaza and would act accordingly. This was Gaza City before last october. Hamas told the bbc that they attacked israel to put palestinians back on the worlds agenda. Israel has damaged or destroyed nearly 60 of all gazas buildings according to satellite analysis. As the war in lebanon deepens, in beirut there are fears they may face something like this. Almost 42,000 palestinians, mostly civilians, have been Killed. 10,000 are missing, thought to be under the rubble. The estimate is that 40 of casualties are children. Israel insists it follows the laws of war, spares civilians and it rejects and condemns the accusation of genocide made by South Africa at the international court ofjustice. More than 2 Million gazans, the un says, are trapped in a humanitarian catastrophe without food, water or medical care. As families are displaced repeatedly on israels orders, bbc verify has tracked how quickly improvised camps spring up. The israelis say they protect civilians. The un says nowhere is safe. Israel does not allow journalists into gaza so, trusted palestinian colleague filmed in a supposedly safe area hit by at least 18 israeli airstrikes. She and her family have had to move 15 times. Translation we were walking on the street when a car was hit and we saw it burning. On the left there were people Killed. On right there were people Killed. Even the donkeys were thrown around in the bombing and we said that is it, we are done. The next rocket will be for us. On the West Bank, the other side of the palestinian territories, Violence And Killing have increased sharply. This isjenin where many israeli raids have neither deterred nor destroyed local armed palestinian militia. The cemetery is filling up with their dead. The war in gaza has radicalised both sides. The West Bank is already part of the pile up of serious conflict in the Middle East. There could be a bigger explosion here if Israel And Iran continue to accelerate into all out war. The nightmare of the war that started in gaza, spreading and igniting the Middle East is happening. A Ceasefire Deal in gaza might just cool the crisis and create a space for diplomacy. Perhaps the war can end in gaza as well. Or perhaps it is too late for that. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, jerusalem. For those with Family Members held captive its been the most trying of years. One of those is Gill And PeteBrisley Theyve travelled to israel from the uk, after their daughter and two granddaughters were Killed by hamas. They now cling onto the hope that their daughters husband elli, whos still being held as a hostage in gaza, may one day return. Heres the bbc s clive myrie, and a warning, this report contains flashing images. If elli comes back, we want the place to be sort of liveable. We have done the garden, done all the weeds, but how can anybody look at three women and one Little Girl and just shoot her . Im sorry, they are not people, they are monsters. Our chief international correspondent, lyse doucet, has been visiting Kibbutz Nir Oz in israel, one of the communities targeted by hamas on october 7. Jonathan lived there with his wife, tamara, and their six year old twin daughters. Now, all that remains of their shared life is an empty, hollow house a symbol of one of the darkest days in israels history. Heres her report. This was once the pretty Kibbutz Nir Oz. Many of them peace activists, living near the gaza border. Look at this now. A small snapshot of what happened to one family in one kibbutz on the deadliest, darkest day in israel s history. This was the home of this man and his wife and their three children, six year old twins and the youngest, two year old. They all perished on the day along with their grandmother carol. In the early hours of october seven one year ago, he had texted his sister saying they are here. That hammes fighters had. They descended in this community and they said they are here, they are burning us and we are suffocating. One year on, members of this community, there is only two living here now, are coming to remember that day. The pain is still raw. One quarter of this community, 117 people, while either Killed or kidnapped. They have been Lighting Candles since that day but there is anger mixed with the grief. He use either photograph of prime Minister Netanyahu saying in hebrew, betrayed. The israelis who say they should be doing much more to bring the israeli Hostages Home and to try to find a way to end this war and anger, too, that it took hours for Israeli Security Forces to come to the defence of this community but mostly todayis of this community but mostly today is a day to mourn. A day which israeli to a person says change this country forever. Shortly will be crossing to reim, the sight of the Nova Festival, on the anniversary of course of the october seven attacks. Its now around 6 23am local time where the very last track that was played on the early morning of October 7 Last year before the attack took place will be played shortly. For more, Will Vernon is in our London Newsroom watching the live event as well. Will, talk us through whats being planned and the significance of the event were seeing . Im just watching pictures now of this incredibly moving event in reim where relatives and friends of the 364 people who were Killed have gathered to commemorate those chilling events of one year ago and 44 people were also Killed that day as hamas gunmen unleash their butyl brutal attack on their butyl brutal attack on the Nova Music Festival. It is worth remembering that these were just young party goers, people who had gathered to have a good time and that is brutal massacre that brutal massacre that brutal massacre was one of the most shocking events of october the seventh. Surely as you mentioned The Last Song will be played, that day that was cut short as the violence unfolded and they will also be a siren sounded as it did then and they will then be a minute s silence and a Mass Prayer. Of course this is not the only Commemorative Event being held in israel today. They will be taking place in various kibbutz, other cities and the israeli Resident Isaac Hercog will be at an event in the city of steroids which also came under assault one year ago. My colleagues and i were actually in their couple of days after october seven and the city really was devastated. It was deserted. Some parts of it were severely damaged, too. They have also been events taking place across the world in recent days to commemorate the thousands of palestinians that were Killed during the Israeli Military offensive that was launched in the days following october the seventh. We launched in the days following october the seventh. October the seventh. We are exnecting october the seventh. We are exnecting any october the seventh. We are expecting any minute october the seventh. We are expecting any minute to october the seventh. You can really see the faces of the people there, i was just looking at the pictures just now, the agony, really. The emotion on the faces of those people that are desperately sad. It is a desperately sad. It is a desperately sad. It is a desperately sad time because of this is one of the official events, it is a ceremony that has been organised by the relatives and the friends of those 364 people that were Killed and the 44 people that were kidnapped so it is not one of the official events but it is more of a kind of grassroots event, if you well. As you said, official commemorative ceremonies are being held right across the country, right across the country, right across israel, all day today. And we also understand as well, after the song plays they will be a siren followed by a minute of silence and the israeli flag will be combined with the flag of the collage of the victims will be lowered as well. As we can see here, just waiting for that song to take place. Can you remind our viewers of exactly what occurred at this festival . ,. , , festival . Yes, that s right. This was festival . Yes, that s right. This was an festival . Yes, that s right. This was an utterly festival . Yes, that s right. This was an utterly chilling | this was an utterly chilling event, horrific massacre, when one year ago, this Nova Music Festival was taking place not far from the border with gaza and at about six oclock in the morning, rockets were seen overhead because as we know before the hamas gunmen unleash this assault of on the ground using machine gardens, rocket repelled grenades and hand held guns, this was preceded by a Mass Barrage of rockets flying through the sky and many of the party goers later said they saw these rockets flying across the sky from gaza and that is when the music was shut off, stopped and everyone was told to leave. They were then sirens that sounded and many people started running for their lives and it was only then that the full horror of this massacre became known as the hamas gunmen on foot arrived at the sight of the festival. We should say that a little bit after these events, after the long side after The Last Song will be played, after the sirens and the Mass Prayer and the minute s silence, they will also be individual ceremonies held in various locations where this Nova Festival took place to commemorate individual acts of horror, really, that took place where young people were trapped inside bomb shelters, trapped inside bomb shelters, trapped inside containers, skips, rubbish dumps, that kind of thing, places where people hid from the onslaught and were then Killed by the gunman. They will be these individual commemorations, vigils, if you like, and those individual sites, little bit later on this morning.
