Earlier, the idf had warned that it was going to target three particular buildings in this area, dahieh, known as a Hezbollah Stronghold. They said they were going to target them because of the hezbollah facilities and interests located there. The idf had posted saying these buildings would be targeted in the near future and told people that were living within 500 metres of them to move urgently. Just to give you a sense of the geography of where this is, i have been talking about how this is in a southern suburb of beirut but it is also in an area that is very close to the International Airport. These Evacuation Orders came before the strikes. Hezbollah has a strong presence in the Southern Suburbs. I think we can show you some of the pictures are one of the big explosions that has happened in the last half an hour. So we can see these pictures that are live and you can see the illumination. I want to show you some of these recorded pictures. There you can see that massive explosion that has happened in the last half an hour or so with that massive amount of Fire And Smoke after that strike by the israeli military. Since these attacks, the israeli military has not commented on exactly what they have targeted, but we did have that warning that they had given a little earlier saying that there were three particular buildings that they were going to target. Calling on people to evacuate up to 500 metres away from those areas. Here is another set of pictures, these were recorded within the last Half Hour and we saw them live here on bbc news. Where they had taken those strikes in this southern suburb. The israelis saying they were targeting three buildings in this stronghold known as dahieh and urging them to evacuate, but you can see this massive amount of fire after that strike on the building. And around this time, this is when it does seem that the israelis do target beirut. It is around 11 Oclock Midnight local time that over the last couple of weeks we have seen these attacks on this particular suburb in the south of beirut that the israelis say they are targeting the Hezbollah Infrastructure. You really do see when it is night just how huge those explosions are in that particular area with the giant fireball going up with the giant fireball going up into the sky and that smoke as part of these attacks. This has been a similar thing that we have seen over the last couple of weeks. So, if you are justjoining a, these are the recorded pictures that we have had in the last half an hour, where we have seen these several explosions in south beirut. All after this evacuation called by the israeli military. These pictures that you are seeing are the ones we recorded in the last half an hour in the south of the lebanese capital. Israel have been carrying out further Bombing Raids on beirut. This all is fighting with hezbollah continues on the ground in southern lebanon. As i was mentioning earlier, israel claims it has killed 440 hezbollah fighters since the start of the Ground Invasion. This all coming as the un says lebanon faces a terrible refugee crisis. Indeed the head of the un Refugee Agency has arrived in beirut and warned of this terrible crisis as the battle intensified. He said that israelI Strikes had left hundreds of thousands of people destitute or displaced. I wonder if we can take you back to the live pictures again now. These were the recorded ones where you can see the fire. This is now the live picture we are getting from beirut. Six minutes past midnight local time there. It does seem it has calmed down very slightly from those intense explosions that we saw in the last half an hour. The camera will move around because it is looking for the latest areas that might have been hit. As I Say, this area is very close to the International Airport. That, of course, is crucial to actually getting some of the civilians from other countries out. Britain, australia have been getting people out by flights. Ijust getting people out by flights. I just want to give you getting people out by flights. Ijust want to give you an idea of what we are hearing from our correspondents in beirut. 0ur middle East Correspondent is actually in beirut and she says she has heard at least six loud explosions. We have seen a number of them, she says clouds of smoke are billowing over the Southern Suburbs. She also says that drones, the buzz of drones has been heard overhead. There is her latest post on the live page that we have up and running on the Bbc Website or the bbc app. I wonder if i can show you those pictures again of the blast that she is talking about that we have seen in the last half an hour or so. You can see the live picture on the right Hand Side of your screen. These the recorded pictures that she is talking about. Clouds of Smoke Billowing. Lebanese media is reporting that two strikes targeted in an area close to the airport, Local Media report three other Hit Locations in the suburb so that suggesting there has been at least five strikes according to the Local Media in lebanon. As we said, the israeli defense forces, the idf, not commenting on what has happened but they did issue these warnings beforehand saying they were going to target three buildings. This of course is becoming a bit of a routine for beirut around midnight. First they hear this heavy drone buzzing. You then get the warning from the idf, then there is a round of explosions that shakes the city and that is what has happened again tonight. These recorded pictures from around half an hour ago where you can see the flames in this southern suburb of beirut. 0ur middle East Correspondent saying that she has heard at least six loud explosions in beirut. We can see that large, huge explosion again. Absolutely huge fireball going up into the sky and that black smoke will billow across all of the southern suburb that the israeli military are targeting. The idf not commented on the strikes but lebanese media reports that two strikes targeted a Location Close to the airport while three more were also hit. We saw before the strikes happened a shot of the airport very close to where this happened and we have said that since this conflict has escalated, this conflict has escalated, this has become a routine in beirut. The target for the idf then hitting them, they say they carry Hezbollah Infrastructure and that is what they are targeting. They say it is facilities and interests is how they describe it, and throughout the day we have seen that area being hit by israeli Missiles Block that particularly in the last Half Hour or so very big explosions of which we have been showing you those pictures in the centre of that southern suburb of beirut. This coming after the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said the days of the strikes by the israeli military in lebanon had destroyed a large part of his Followeds Arsenal and he said it had changed the war against the iranian backed group. The idf maintaining its attacks hitting again and again that southern suburb of beirut, issuing Evacuation Orders and thatis issuing Evacuation Orders and that is what we have seen again tonight. 0ur Correspondent in beirut saying she particularly had heard six loud explosions, clouds of smoke. You can see on that Picture Smoke billowing across the area. The drones buzzing overhead. That is what the israelis do here. They send the israelis do here. They send the drones over and thats what people in lebanon do here before these explosions that they have heard over the last few days. We earlier heard that President Macron had said there should be a ceasefire in the area. He also said that they should stop sending arms to israel. President macron s remarks didnt go unnoticed because the israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu reacted saying shame on them to any western leaders supporting this. Lets have a listen to what the israeli Prime Minister had to say. I5 what the israeli Prime Minister had to say had to say. Is iran imposing an Arms Embargo . Had to say. Is iran imposing an Arms Embargo . Of had to say. Is iran imposing an Arms Embargo . Of course had to say. Is iran imposing an j Arms Embargo . Of course not. The access of Terror Axis of terror stands together but countries who supposedly oppose the Axis Call for an Arms Embargo on israel. What a disgrace. 50 embargo on israel. What a Disgrace Embargo on israel. What a disurace. , , disgrace. So that was israels Prime Minister disgrace. So that was israels prime Minister BenjaminPrime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu reacting to those comments from the french president , emmanuel macron. These are the live pictures we are seeing from beirut, i2 are seeing from beirut, 12 minutes past midnight local time, where there have been a number of explosions in the last Half Hour. Let me show you, and I Stress again these are the recorded pictures of what happened in the last Half Hour. Take a look at that. That one of the big explosions that has happened in the southern suburb of beirut. 0ur Correspondent in beirut saying she had heard six loud explosions. 0n the right Hand Side of the screen is the live pictures, and on the left side is the recorded ones of these explosions that we have seen in the last half an hour or so. Clouds and Smoke Billowing over the Southern Suburbs. We havent had any comment from the idf about what they have targeted tonight, but Local Media reports saying that two strikes targeted locations in an area close to the International Airport in beirut while three more hit other locations in this the suburbs. This is a pattern that has happened in the last few weeks since the conflict escalated where the israeli Military Issue what they describe as a new Evacuation Order for one of the suburbs because they are going to target what they say is hezbollah facilities and interests that are located there. Thats what happened earlier, they said three buildings would be targeted and they said in the near future. They then said that people living within 500 metres of them should move urgently. And then we have seen on the left Hand Side of your screen what has happened in the last half an hour or so, these big blasts in the area that is close to the airport. That is an area that the israeli military have targeted time and time again over the last couple of weeks because they say this is where hezbollah facilities and its interests, Benjamin Netanyahu earlier talking about Neta Nyahu earlier talking about how netanyahu earlier talking about how these days of strikes by israeli military on lebanon had destroyed what he said was a large part of hezbollah s arsenal and changed the course of the war against the iranian backed group. Earlier today, the israel had said it had killed at least 440 has bollard fighters since the start of its Ground Invasion hezbollah fighters. The pattern has followed the last couple of weeks that it is often around this time in the evening that we actually have these warnings and then we have the explosions in the southern suburb of beirut, around 11 oclock, midnight local time in the capital of lebanon. As I Say, our correspondent in beirut saying she had heard at least six loud explosions and we have seen those on screen. You can seen those on screen. You can see that on the left Hand Side of your screen at the moment. 0ne of your screen at the moment. One of those explosions on the right is the live pictures we are getting in from beirut. The israeli defence not yet commenting on what they have targeted in these attacks that we are seeing in the last half an hour or so we are seeing in the last half an Hour Orso but we are seeing in the last half an hour or so but they did say earlier that they would target what they said was hezbollah facilities in this area, Dahieh Area of beirut, one of those areas that they have been targeting for a couple of weeks now since this has escalated. 0ur Correspondent is in beirut and i think she can now come and i think she can now come and join a on the phone. Just tell us what you have seen over the last Half Hour or so. The last Half Hour or so. Until now we have the last Half Hour or so. Until now we have heard the last Half Hour or so. Until now we have heard at the last Half Hour or so. Until now we have heard at least l the last Half Hour or so. Until l now we have heard at least ten very large Air Strikes. I can see from my balcony that a cloud of smoke is rising above a southern suburb of beirut. Two large explosions first came from the area very close to the airport and the rest came from different locations in southern beirut. Right now, just before I Start talking to you, there was another loud explosion that is icy on Social Media, half the city heard the explosion and right now I Still see that the part of southern beirut is burning whatever has been hit. It is very thick clouds of smoke above it. It is very thick clouds of smoke above it. Yes, we saw Ictures Smoke above it. Yes, we saw pictures of smoke above it. Yes, we saw pictures of that smoke above it. Yes, we saw pictures of that massive smoke above it. Yes, we saw| pictures of that massive blast that you say was heard across the city. Just explain the area that has been targeted again. The area is known as Dahieh Which in arabic means southern suburb and it is known also as a Hezbollah Stronghold but it is packed residential area. Just before these Air Strikes, the idf israeli Defence Army warned residents to leave some locations, at least nine locations, at least nine locations were appointed on the map that was posted by an idf spokesperson. Asking people to evacuate, right after explosions happened. This is becoming regular and routine for nights here in beirut. First we are hearing a very heavy drone overhead buzzing and its not only the drones flying around locations that they are known as the stronghold of hezbollah, they are all over the city, over different parts of the city. And right after, there is a warning by the israeli army and then explosions exactly on these areas near midnight. The pictures we are seeing on our screen at the moment, the ones that were recorded a little earlier, just give a a sense if you can how many people are still living in that area that the idf as you have said have been targeting specifically over the last couple of weeks. There are still people. It is difficult to talk about numbers because some people are leaving, and then once they feel that it is ok to go back or they feel that they cannot really survive in shelter because there are a lack of shelters for displaced people, there are a huge number of displaced Over Beirut, not only from the southern suburb of the city but also those who fled from southern lebanon due to a War Thatis Southern Lebanon due to a war that is happening on the border with israel. So some people decide to go back no matter what. From my balcony, i can see that neighbourhood visibly and i can see that Day By day it is becoming darker and darker, indicating that people are leaving their houses. The number of people that are still there macro, its not really clear here but there are still civilians and we have contacts there that they are still civilians but they dont think they can leave their houses because of the situation that they see on the streets. All Over Beirut are full of these people, many of them now are sleeping in the streets for more than two weeks. Absolutely, and you mentioned the idf give these warnings. How do the people who are living there take them . Are they able to get away from these buildings quickly enough . Could you repeat the question . I was saying the idf give these warnings. How easy is it for people living in that area to move away from the buildings that the idf say they are targeting . That the idf say they are targeting . That the idf say they are tarauetin . ,. ,. , targeting . Understood. In the past few days. Targeting . Understood. In the past few days, i targeting . Understood. In the past few days, i had targeting . Understood. In the past few days, i had a targeting . Understood. In the past few days, i had a chancel past few days, i had a chance to talk to some people that have fled because of the warnings, but before these warnings, but before these warnings, what i understood is that before these warnings being published on Social Media, there are also messages going to personal telephones on whatsapp so residents somehow are receiving, though civilians are receiving, though civilians are receiving, though civilians are receiving warnings via their telephone but many of them told a that the warnings are not coming soon enough, early enough to let them leave. Some had onlyjust less than one Hour Tojust grab some had onlyjust less than one hour to just grab whatever they could orjust a Car Key and if there was any road open because most of the roads Inside Dahieh or the southern suburb of beirut are closed so some of them said they have to just walk out and run and just be away from the areas, the locations and points that it was pointed on the map. But it wasnt easy for them, but they said they received messages, warnings before Social Media on their phones too. Their phones too. Thank you very much their phones too. Thank you very much indeed. Their phones too. Thank you very much indeed. Stay their phones too. Thank you | very much indeed. Stay safe. Their phones too. Thank you very much indeed. Stay safe. We will let you go in beirut. The live picture you can see in beirut is a plane that looks like it is coming to land at the International Airport, and the International Airport, and the reason i mention that is the reason i mention that is the airport is very close to where the explosions have happened. I wonder if i can show you those pictures again within the last hour of exactly what we have been talking about, these big blasts that have been seen and heard in southern beirut. Take a look at that. You can see this probably around 45 minutes ago now, that massive blast and that fire smoke. Let me bring in my Colleague Anna Foster who is also in beirut. We are looking at these pictures of this huge Fire Ball that followed one of the explosions. Just describe what you heard in the city. figs what you heard in the city. As ou can what you heard in the city. Is you can see, and the pictures show it very clearly, this was a particularly large blast that we had in beirut. Some of the early suggestions are that it may have hit a Petrol Station and that is why we have seen many of these israeli Air Strikes over the last two weeks now, and they do tend to come at this time of night. Certainly when we got to around midnight, i noticed again the idf, what they tend to do through the arabic language spokesperson, is put out warnings people often in specific areas, specific buildings in some cases. Its what they have been doing in gaza for some time. They put a Map Up and tell people to move at least 500 metres away, theyre normally about 30 minutes later or or thereabouts you will get an Air Strike on that spot. But as you say, tonight it looks particularly dramatic and it may be because we think the area, looking at the map and where the morning was, the triangulating those pictures, it looks like its very close to a Petrol Station. Certainly if you look at those pictures and you see those initial flames and what looks like a very large sort of secondary explosion with that mushroom of Orange Flame and black smoke rising into the air, that is what people think has happened at the moment. Again, it is worth stressing two macro things. One is that we are seeing these Air Strikes not just at we are seeing these Air Strikes notjust at night now but through the day here in beirut as well. The second thing is though Southern Suburbs where the vast majority of these Air Strikes are focused, which is the area where hezbollah is based in beirut. Its also very close to the airport. You mentioned you can see a plane coming in and we have seen all through today really there was a strike in that area this morning and we were watching planes coming in and leaving again with that plume of grey smoke in the background. I crossed the city earlier today and went into the mountains, and went into the mountains, and when you look down you can see the plumes of smoke around. We saw a new black loom of smoke so the Air Strikes have been a lot of them today but what makes this i think particularly dramatic is the pictures you can see. Also I Suppose that raises questions about how many people may still have been in that area because these warnings tend to specify 500 metres. A lot of people have already left dahieh since the strike started a week ago. There are still people in that area but a lot have gone. The idf when they carry out the strikes, very often when they put out a message on their Social Media channels, they will describe it as a precise strike. And often you will see for example a building where one apartment has been targeted and the windows have gone, the inside has been blasted away. But the building still stands and the other apartments around it still stand. But certainly what this fresh plus the we are seeing here looks like is something that has been far less targeted. And for one reason or another, be it proximity to a Petrol Station, be it by design, it looks like its taken a larger area than usual. , ,. , usual. You say it could have fitted petrol usual. You say it could have fitted Petrol Station, usual. You say it could have fitted Petrol Station, it fitted Petrol Station, it totally ties in with those massive viable pictures that we saw on our screens. The idf says it is targeting this area because of what it describes as hezbollah facilities and interests. This area is a stronghold for hezbollah. This is the Area Stronghold for hezbollah. This is the area in stronghold for hezbollah. This is the area in Beirut Stronghold for hezbollah. T I S is the area in beirut where hezbollah is based essentially, yes, where hezbollah s senior leadership were based. You only need to look back to friday a week ago when that huge powerful explosion that shook all of a here in beirut, the Sound And Size of it, that we later discovered had killed hassan nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, the man who led the organisation for three decades but hadnt been seen in public for years. But hadnt been seen in public foryears. He but hadnt been seen in public for years. He was a really elusive figure and it turned out we now know that he had been dug into this headquarters below some residential buildings in dahieh. The idf say when they put out their take on these Air Strikes afterwards, they often say they are targeting particular members of hezbollah s Command Structure and they have managed to kill a lot of them in the last two weeks or so. When you look at the upper echelons of hezbollah, in terms of it being a military group, a political group, they proscribe Terror Organisation in the us, the uk and others, there Air Programmes have been killed by israel but its also worth stressing that dahieh was not an area solely populated by the leaders of hezbollah. There were also civilians who lived there, shia people who supported them, but we know they have been civilian deaths as well. They also say sometimes they are targeting Hezbollah Command centres but also where weapons have been stored. When we get a message from hezbollah saying one of their leaders has been killed, that confirms it. Our middle East Correspondent based in beirut went on a press briefing, and one of the things the hezbollah leaders were saying is that they were not storing weapons in that area. You
