We have talked to one of the civil defence members and they told us that it seems the israeli Air Strike has precisely targeted This medical centre. Although Everybody Inside was civilian as they put it. But usually the israelis say, we target places that are close to hezbollah military infrastructure. Although hezbollah denies storing or manufacturing weapons in residential areas. The israelis are saying they are striking as you say specific and precise targets and buildings which have links to hezbollah. This is true, This is the israeli argument. They say, we usually hit areas that are in one way or another associated with the Hezbollah Military Activities but when you put This argument to the people here, especially the residents of This building, they get really angry and they insist Everybody Inside the medical centre that was targeted last night were civilians. They say all the people who lost their lives were medics, many of the injured were medics. We could even see masks and gloves on The Streets. There were some blankets behind me. It is a scene of fear and chaos. Over the past few days in fact, we have been hearing Constant Bombardment in the beirut southern suburb. But last night the strike was here in the heart of the capital. Just give us a sense of what life is like living in beirut at the moment. We know This was a rare strike in the centre of the city, but is there anywhere In The City that feels safe at the moment . There are some streets around In The City where life seems business as usual, but itjust feels tense here. You can just feel it in the air. I visited the city a few months ago and it feels like a totally different city now. Many shops and restaurants are closed. There is a constant state of anticipation here. No one knows what is going to happen each single night, because every single night you hear the loud sound of Air Strikes in the southern suburb of beirut. So people are just worried what the future carries with them. When you walk around even in Central Beirut, you find a lot of displaced people living out in The Street. I have spoken to a woman the other day. She said she has been out on The Street for five days and she told me, ijust wish i can shower so that i can feel human again. They are not getting much aid here although local ngos are trying, but according to lebanese officials there are more than A Million displaced people in This country now. Many of them could be seen around beirut whether in shelters or in The Street, and lebanon is a country that has been already short of resources even before This escalation started. They are struggling really hard to try and cope with This huge Displacement Problem and they are calling out for aid from the international community. Heres the latest from jerusalem with our middle East Correspondent yolande knell. We have just had an update from the israeli military about the latest attacks that it has been carrying out inside lebanon. It is saying it has hit about 200 targets associated with hezbollah, talking about how one Council Building was hit in Southern Lebanon where it says about 15 hezbollah operatives were killed and that weapons were stored there, that is its claim. On the ground it claims to have killed hezbollah fighters with exchanges of fire. This after we had the news that eight israeli soldiers have been killed in an ambush. It had been expected of course that there would be some stiff resistance put up when israeli forces entered and that they started to encounter some of the more seasoned hezbollah fighters who were on their home terrain. Still Rocket Sirens have been sounding in the north of israel. That is close to the border with lebanon where hezbollah has been Firing Rockets towards israeli communities. Most of those intercepted. We also know that overnight the houThis now claiming responsibility for launching two drones at central israel. One of those was intercepted without there being any casualties as a result but we are now in thejewish new year holiday, most jewish israelis are off work or off school but the country remains on a very high state of alert. No sense yet of how israel will respond after that barrage of missiles that came over from iran on tuesday. We are hearing from President Biden, the clip that he was saying yesterday, he will not support any attack on the nuclear sites in iran from israel. We had the Israel Security Cabinet meeting in an underground bunker ahead of the holiday talking about how they would respond. They said they would do that forcefully. They are discussing different options we understand, different strategic sites inside iran. There had been a lot of talk in israeli media that there were voices, they were hearing from the military and the political establishment that really wanted to go after the nuclear sites in iran, long seen by israel as being a great threat. The message that came from israels closest ally the us is really that those sites are off limits. Still talk about the possibility of attacking oil production, gas rigs, these kinds of sites within iran that would deal a blow to the economy, even targeted assassinations being talked about by some israeli journalists but at the moment we really dont know. The us has been saying that the response really has to be done proportionally and it supports israels right to respond but there are all these discussions going on with different members of the g7. The us Secretary Of State talking to different european foreign ministers including britains David Lammy to discuss all these latest developments. Just trying to work out what exactly is going on, how difficult is it and how do you find out what is happening for example, the Ground Incursion that was thought to have begun on monday, how easy or difficult is it for independentjournalists to work out exactly what is going on on the ground . But there are also military Censorship Rules which mean you mustnt give away details of troop manouveres, because that could endanger israels national security.
