The us president has spoken to other World Leaders in the g7, and called for any retaliation from the israelis to be proportionate. The iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian warned if israel retaliated, iran would respond more severely. Israels military says eight of its soldiers were killed in the first two days of its Ground Invasion of lebanon. Hezbollah says it fired guided missiles at their tanks. Peter bowes has the latest. More explosions ring out overnight in lebanon. The israeli army says it conducted a precise attack on bachoura in Central Beirut. The first raid in the heart of lebanons capital. Lebanese officials say at least five people were killed and ii injured in This israeli strike on a medicalfacility, a building affiliated with hezbollah. Earlier, the lebanese Health Ministry confirmed at least 46 people have been killed in israeli strikes in the previous 2a hours. And overnight, the us government has confirmed that an american man, 56 year old kamal ahmad jawad, is among those who died. The israeli military says eight of its soldiers were killed in the opening two days of its Ground Invasion of lebanon, and This latest strike overnight came hours after a united Nations Security Council meeting where israel warned it would retaliate if attacked. We will defend our people and our response will be swift and decisive. Those who attack us will face serious consequences. Irans unprecedented response, that barrage of missiles fired into israel on tuesday has escalated This crisis just days before the first anniversary of the hamas attacks last year on october the 7th. President biden says G7 Leaders are planning to coordinate new sanctions and other measures to respond to irans actions. But he did not support israel striking irans nuclear sites. The answer is no. And i think theres things well be discussing with the israelis, what theyre going to do, but all seven of us agree that they have a right to respond, but they should respond proportionately. The Middle East is on edge and tensions could not be higher, with israel expected to launch a significant retaliatory attack on iran any day. The Uss Commitment to israels security, according to the white house, remains ironclad, but the overwhelming concern is that conflicts on several fronts could soon erupt into a regional war. Peter bowes, bbc news. Sally nabil, our correspondent from bbc arabic, is near the location of the strike and gave me This update. I am right here where an Air Strike, an israeli Air Strike has hit a medical centre overnight. The medical centre is in a residential Building Right behind me. It has been hit really hard. We know that seven medics have lost their lives in the israeli Air Strikes. There are a number of other medics who are injured. We had been talking to people in the area who told me This residential building is busy and even This area is crowded with people. As soon as the strike hit, which was very loud, everybody in Central Beirut could hear it, as soon as the strike hit, all the residents were out and children were screaming, one of the people inside told me, i felt my heart was going to stop, it was pounding very, very loud. So it was and still is a scene of chaos here. They are clearing the rubble behind me which is why it sounds very noisy. We have talked to one of the civil defence members and they told us that it seems the israeli Air Strike has precisely targeted This medical centre. Although Everybody Inside was civilian as they put it. But usually the israelis say, we target places that are close to hezbollah military infrastructure. Although hezbollah denies storing or manufacturing weapons in residential areas. The israelis are saying they are striking as you say specific and precise targets and buildings which have links to hezbollah. This is true, This is the israeli argument. They say, we usually hit areas that are in one way or another associated with the Hezbollah Military Activities but when you put This argument to the people here, especially the residents of This building, they get really angry and they insist Everybody Inside the medical centre that was targeted last night were civilians. They say all the people who lost their lives were medics, many of the injured were medics. We could even see masks and gloves on The Streets. There were some blankets behind me. It is a scene of fear and chaos. Over the past few days in fact, we have been hearing Constant Bombardment in the beirut southern suburb. But last night the strike was here in the heart of the capital. Just give us a sense of what life is like living in beirut at the moment. We know This was a rare strike in the centre of the city, but is there anywhere In The City that feels safe at the moment . There are some streets around In The City where life seems business as usual, but itjust feels tense here. You can just feel it in the air. I visited the city a few months ago and it feels like a totally different city now. Many shops and restaurants are closed. There is a constant state of anticipation here. No one knows what is going to happen each single night, because every single night you hear the loud sound of Air Strikes in the southern suburb of beirut. So people are just worried what the future carries with them. When you walk around even in Central Beirut, you find a lot of displaced people living out in The Street. I have spoken to a woman the other day. She said she has been out on The Street for five days and she told me, ijust wish i can shower so that i can feel human again. They are not getting much aid here although local ngos are trying, but according to lebanese officials there are more than A Million displaced people in This country now. Many of them could be seen around beirut whether in shelters or in The Street, and lebanon is a country that has been already short of resources even before This escalation started. They are struggling really hard to try and cope with This huge Displacement Problem and they are calling out for aid from the international community. Heres the latest from jerusalem with our middle East Correspondent yolande knell. We have just had an update from the israeli military about the latest attacks that it has been carrying out inside lebanon. It is saying it has hit about 200 targets associated with hezbollah, talking about how one Council Building was hit in Southern Lebanon where it says about 15 hezbollah operatives were killed and that weapons were stored there, that is its claim. On the ground it claims to have killed hezbollah fighters with exchanges of fire. This after we had the news that eight israeli soldiers have been killed in an ambush. It had been expected of course that there would be some stiff resistance put up when israeli forces entered and that they started to encounter some of the more seasoned hezbollah fighters who were on their home terrain. Still Rocket Sirens have been sounding in the north of israel. That is close to the border with lebanon where hezbollah has been Firing Rockets towards israeli communities. Most of those intercepted. We also know that overnight the houThis now claiming responsibility for launching two drones at central israel. One of those was intercepted without there being any casualties as a result but we are now in thejewish new year holiday, most jewish israelis are off work or off school but the country remains on a very high state of alert. No sense yet of how israel will respond after that barrage of missiles that came over from iran on tuesday. We are hearing from President Biden, the clip that he was saying yesterday, he will not support any attack on the nuclear sites in iran from israel. We had the Israel Security Cabinet meeting in an underground bunker ahead of the holiday talking about how they would respond. They said they would do that forcefully. They are discussing different options we understand, different strategic sites inside iran. There had been a lot of talk in israeli media that there were voices, they were hearing from the military and the political establishment that really wanted to go after the nuclear sites in iran, long seen by israel as being a great threat. The message that came from israels closest ally the us is really that those sites are off limits. Still talk about the possibility of attacking oil production, gas rigs, these kinds of sites within iran that would deal a blow to the economy, even targeted assassinations being talked about by some israeli journalists but at the moment we really dont know. The us has been saying that the response really has to be done proportionally and it supports israels right to respond but there are all these discussions going on with different members of the g7. The us Secretary Of State talking to different european foreign ministers including britains David Lammy to discuss all these latest developments. Just trying to work out what exactly is going on, how difficult is it and how do you find out what is happening for example, the Ground Incursion that was thought to have begun on monday, how easy or difficult is it for independentjournalists to work out exactly what is going on on the ground . As we had with gaza, covering the war there has been externally difficult, because foreign journalists have not been able to access since the 7th of october. In the north of israel there is a closed Military Zone around three israeli border towns, although you can see my colleagues on the ground, the movements of some tanks, not much is being said officially. We know there are three entire Military Divisions that have been put up there. There are the official statements that come out from the israeli military where it is still stressing its Ground Operation is limited, it is targeted, localised. But there are also military Censorship Rules which mean you mustnt give away details of troop manouveres, because that could endanger israels national security. Lets speak to professor of International Relations at London School of economics, fawaz gerges. Thank you forjoining us. Looking at all the lines coming in This morning and over the last few days, in your estimation is further escalation inevitable . I fear so. I escalation inevitable . I fear so i fear escalation inevitable . I fear so. I fear that escalation inevitable . I fear so. I fear that what escalation inevitable . I fear so. I fear that what we escalation inevitable . I fear so. I fear that what we are i so. I fear that what we are witnessing now in lebanon his all out war. Let me give your viewers a glimpse of what is happening and what has been happening and what has been happening in lebanon. More than 1000 lebanese have been killed. Many of them are children and women. More than 2000 have been injured. You have more than1 million displaced according to the lebanese government, which is the greatest Displacement Crisis in its history. People are sleeping in car parks, on The Street, as your correspondent has mentioned. The Health Ministry says hospitals are overwhelmed. Now you have israeli Military Invasionjust you have israeli Military Invasion just started a couple of days ago. It is not only escalation in gaza and lebanon. Now it is becoming a direct war between iran and israel. If israel does respond and retaliate, iran has made it very clear it will retaliate on a much bigger scale than it has in the past two days. So really This is the tipping point, This fire that we have been warning about in the past 12 months since the 7th of october. Can ou see since the 7th of october. Can you see a since the 7th of october. Can you see a scenario since the 7th of october. Can you see a scenario where israel doesnt directly retaliate after that barrage of missiles that came over on tuesday . The attern, that came over on tuesday . The pattern. If that came over on tuesday . The pattern, if history that came over on tuesday . Tue pattern, if history is that came over on tuesday . Tte pattern, if history is a guide, the pattern is that israel will respond and israel often responds in a very disproportionate manner, whether it is in gaza or lebanon. Anti americans have given the israelis the green light to respond. The question is not whether israel will respond, the question is in what way. Some israelis, the consensus emerging in israel that israel should use This, irans retaliation, is a golden opportunity to attack irans nuclear programme. They are thinking of multiple targets, gas, oil, assassinations, and what i fear the most is that israeli leaders led by Netanyahu Feel emboldened and Neta Nyahu feel emboldened and that Netanyahu Feel emboldened and that they are winning. They could really use This particular moment in order to escalate. Also the reason why i are a bit anxious, because what we are seeing, as you were saying earlier about whether escalation is the trend, the reason why i think This is the most dangerous moment in the history of the region in the past 40 years, there are no firefighters. There is a vacuum of global leadership. Only arsonists. The united states no longer pretends to be neutral, they have fully joined longer pretends to be neutral, they have fullyjoined the fray, europe is a follower as opposed to being a leader, following the us, and China And Russia dont care. The middle Eastis Russia dont care. The Middle East is left to its own devices and without global leadership, without, This is a recipe for further escalation and probably all out wide war. I hope i am wrong in This. All out wide war. I hope i am wrong in This. We will have to leave it there wrong in This. We will have to leave it there but wrong in This. We will have to leave it there but i wrong in This. We will have to leave it there but i appreciate your time. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Welcome back. British prime Minister Sir Keir starmer has paid back more than £6,000, thats 8,000, worth of gifts and hospitality received since entering number 10 after a backlash over donations. The prime minister is covering the costs for six tickets to see Taylor Swift, tickets for horse races, and clothes rented from a high End Designer for his wife. He has now committed to overhauling Hospitality Rules for ministers to ensure more transparency. Our political correspondent Harry Farley explained just what the pm has and hasnt been paying back. He is paying back some of the gifts he has received, £3400 worth of Taylor Swift tickets in august. Tickets to see the races in doncaster and a clothing rented agreement used by his wife. He is not paying back things like hospitality to see arsenal football club, thousands of pounds of clothing he received before the Election. The questions for Keir Starmer Continue and they followed him to Brussels Yesterday where he gave This response to the question of why he was repaying the money 110w. We came in as a government of change. We will now bring forward principles for donations because until now politicians have used their best individualjudgment on a case by case basis. I think we need some principles of general application so i took the decision that until the principles are in place it was right for me to make those repayments. It is not clear what those principles will be or indeed when they will be in place. Those questions as yet unanswered. Keir starmer is far from the only mp to receive gifts and the conservative leadership have themselves declared thousands of Pounds Worth of donations for their campaigns. But the questions for Keir Starmer in particular Continue. There is no question that those other key members of the government will be paying back their freebies come whatever you want to call it, and also some questions for lord alli who is the name behind all This, the principal donor behind all This. He is under investigation. Exactly, he is under investigation by the house of lords standards watchdog. We dont know what that investigation precisely is about but we understand it is over a clerical element of the declarations already made. Questions also for Labours Cabinet ministers, whether they should and will follow the prime Ministers Example in paying back some of the gifts they have received since the Election in particular. Questions for Angela Rayner the deputy prime minister, she declared around £800 of hospitality to visit a Dj Set in ibiza. Questions for her and other and other Cabinet Ministers over the gifts they received. Downing street trying to draw a line under This but at the moment the questions and scrutiny Continues. But as one of the interesting Things J one of the interesting things here, that the Department Of Justice tends to have This moratorium, about 60 days before an Election, do not bring anything that could potentially impact the upcoming Election or any of the candidates in the Election. This coming from the judge, not from the Special Counsel. The judge unsealed This latest tranche of allegations against former President Trump in relation to This Election-interference-case'>Election Interference Case from four years ago. Within This we are seeing him cite that mike pence, then the Vice President for President Trump, told him at least nine times in the days immediately after that Election, trying to convince him to give up his fight when it comes to returning the result of that one, saying he could run again in the next cycle, where we are now, to which trump allegedly said 2024 is so far off. Does This affect that in any way . That in any way . This really is a direct response that in any way . This really is a direct response to that in any way . This really is a direct response to the a direct response to the supreme Court Ruling from over the summer saying that there was immunity for president when it comes to official acts. What we are seeing in This latest unsealed document is that the Special Counsel was saying these were all actions taken by an individual who was running for president , not by president who had concerns about Election-interference'>Election Interference in an Election, This was a candidate trying to find ways to win their own Election, and so that is the distinction the Special Counsel is trying to make. Will that work . That is yet to be seen. There is also another possibility that This could make its way all the way up to the Supreme Court, a former President Trump does not end up taking office in november and This case is allowed to Continue. Braemarfell to 4. 1 celsius. Theres been some Mist And Fog around This morning as well. And for the next few days, we are looking at the days starting on a chilly note with Mist And Fog, but most of us will have sunny spells. But therell be some patchy Rain Coming in from the west. This afternoon, a lot of dry weather around. Fair Weather Cloud bubbling up. It could produce the odd shower, perhaps in the south east, maybe one or two in the west, but that will be the exception rather than the rule. But the Sunshine Turning Hazier from the west in the latter part of the afternoon. Now, into the evening, The Cloud will be accompanied by Strengthening Winds And Rain Across Northern Ireland and western scotland. Not particularly heavy rain, though. England and wales seeing some Mist And Fog patches forming. And here it will be a chilly night. In rural areas, we could even see a touch of frost. But where weve got The Cloud and the patchy rain, here, temperatures holding up, and its courtesy of This Weather Front, which through the course of tomorrow will slowly drift eastwards. Thats a fairly weak feature. So, we start in england and wales with the Mist And Fog, that lifts, then a lot of dry weather, a fair bit of sunshine. The cloud spreading across northern ireland, the Isle Of Man and scotland. With it, patchy Light Rain and temperatures 13 to about 17 degrees, north to south. Itll feel quite pleasant, that 17, in the sunshine. Then, as we move beyond that, from friday and into the weekend, we say goodbye to This first Weather Front. But then the next area of low pressure comes in with a more potent Weather Front during the course of saturday. So, once again, for england and for wales, we start off on a dry note with some sunshine, but heavier rain and stronger winds come in from the west, gusty winds through the irish sea, and that is very slowly pushing eastwards. So, many eastern and central areas and also parts of wales will stay dry during the course of saturday. But overnight saturday and into sunday, what Youll Find is the whole lot Continues itsjourney, pushing eastwards, taking its cloud and its rain with it. So, later on in the day, it tends to brighten up from the west. But here too were not immune to one or two showers.
