Being launched from iran as yet and is at a high state of alert. The israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged israelis to heed safety instructions, and warned of testing days ahead. The us Embassy Injerusalem has directed staff and their families to shelter in place until further notice. Joining me now is our correspondent Jon Donnison whos Injerusalem And Anna foster whos in beirut. Iran has been threatening to seek vengeance for the killing of the leader of the iranian backed Militia Group in lebanon who was killed on friday and it seems, if it comes to pass, this could be that response. This would be different because as you say, ballistic missiles are capable of reaching israel much, much quicker. They would be guided missiles in the New York Times is reporting that the likely target would be irans intelligence headquarters like Tel Aviv. And they have known the potential threat was coming. Yes, youre absolutely right it was interesting about this is that this will now not be a Surprise Attack in any way and it may be that the us intelligence is picked up signs that this launch is imminent but it might also be Lake Iran has telegraphed it its going to respond to the death of Hassan Nasrallah in a way that is giving a warning to israel and so, it can be seen to be responding and sending a strong message that is not accepting what israel is doing well the same time, perhaps knowing that with some warning, israel might be able to neutralise the threat. ,. , threat. Ive been speaking to dr h. A. Hellyer, who is a senior Associate Fellow at Carnegie Endowment for international peace. He gave me his assessment of the israeli incursion into lebanon. The invasion, um, is, you know, under way. Its unclear as to how far the israelis are going to go. What we do know is that the israelis were not particularly happy about the fact that the us leaked information about the beginnings of the invasion, which apparently they did, according to reports, in order to try to limit the operation. But having said that, its still an Invasion And Mission creep is very real. Um, when we look at how the israelis proceeded in gaza a year ago and you look at how today theres now a Military Governor that has been appointed for the territory of gaza by the israelis. You know, what happens in between is not the result of, you know, one linear plan, but indeed, because on the ground without checks and balances and there are none at present when it comes to the israelis, then things can really change quite quickly. In terms of the iranians, um, i want to point out right now, all of these things are unconfirmed. The white House Official has not been identified, which means that it was purposely leaked without attribution and picked up very quickly by different media outlets. At the same time, Sky News is reporting that the idf have told them that they dont see any imminent aerial attack. Um, so its unclear. Are the iranians actually planning something . Are the iranians feigning an attack in order to rattle their adversaries . Whats going on, exactly . I think we have to be very, very cautious here. Were in the midst of, quote unquote, the fog of war. Um, and many things have been justified in the past relying on intelligence that turned out to be incorrect. So id be cautious about that. Yes, youre right to have all of those caveats. But referencing what ijust read out from the Un Secretary general saying All Out War must be avoided. That is a real risk here, isnt it . I think it is. And i think its very dangerous. I think its very reckless. Youve seen this language, particularly over the last day or so, where senior american figures and of course, the israeli government, especially netanyahu himself, the Prime Minister, are talking about, quote unquote, some sort of historic opportunity to reshape the Middle East, to remake the Middle East, that the Middle East right now is malleable and not as solid and locked into certain patterns as usual. That its a once in a Generation Sort of opportunity. And this is incredibly dangerous talk. Every time this talk has happened in my lifetime, the results have been catastrophic. Is Shooting Attack near Tel Aviv with casualties thats being reported on Israeli TelevisionIsraeli Police confirming a Shooting Attack with a number of casualties and the suspicions of a motive is a terror attack. Those reports coming in as we were listening to the doctor it will keep an eye on that and bring you the very latest on that and incredibly fluid i was there in the region here on bbc news. Around the world and across the uk, youre watching bbc news. With around five Weeks to go until election day, the us Vice President ial candidates will face each other later today in their only scheduled debate of this election. Tim walz the Minnesota Governor will be representing the democrats and Kamala Harris. Jd vance, the ohio senator, will be making the case for the republicans and Donald Trump. They ll be debating important issues including immigration and the Economy And Bbc verify s fact checking team will be looking out for some key claims as Merlyn Thomas explains. Vice president Ial Candidatest Vance and Tim Walz will go head to head on Tuesday Night for the first and only time. The campaign has already been dominated by claim and counter claim, and it could be a busy night for fact checkers at bbc verify. Heres what you need to know if some of these claims come up. Republicans have been attacking the biden harris Administrations Record on illegal immigration with some big numbers. Jd vance said this. Its also because Kamala Harris let 25 Million illegal aliens into this country. But we dont know where this number comes from. Us Border Officials record encounters with immigrants. This includes people who attempted to cross illegally, and people who tried to enter legally but werent allowed. These encounters did rise to record highs under the Biden Harris Administration before falling in recent months, but not to the overall Number Vance claims. Since biden became president injanuary 2021, there have been more than Ten Million so called encounters, and about Eight Million of those came over the southern Land Border with mexico. And vance might be asked about the baseless claim he made on x about Haitian Immigrants Eating Pets in springfield, ohio, which Donald Trump then repeated in the president ial debate. In springfield, theyre eating the dogs. Bbc verify have found no evidence to support the claim. Police and city officials told us theyd had no reports of this happening, but vance has since refused to back down, saying this on cnn. If i have to. It wasnt just a meme. If i have to create stories so that the american media actually pays attention to the suffering of the american people, then thats what im going to do. Now onto walz. This is the first president ial election since the supreme court, including three conservative justices appointed by Donald Trump, overturned the constitutional right to abortion in 2022. Democrats think the Battle Over Reproductive Rights is a winning issue for them, and they have this warning. He will ban abortion across this country, whether congress is there or not be absolutely clear about it. But thats not what trump says. In this campaign, hes ruled out a nationwide abortion ban, so this claim is misleading. Walz will still try to capitalise on divisions among conservatives, including trump and vance themselves, over how far into a pregnancy individual states should ban abortions from. And youll probably hear a lot about project 2025 from walz. Theyve made it easy for us to know what theyre going to do, because they wrote it in a 900 Page Document called project 2025. Walz claims trump plans to implement an ultra conservative Policy Agenda created by the Heritage Foundation think tank. But after a backlash against some more radical proposals, trump began distancing himself from the 900 Page Document and said he has nothing to do with it. Dozens of former Trump Administration officials did contribute to the proposals, giving democrats an attack line. But again, trump says he wasnt involved in this. Theres likely to be lots of other claims that will come up on the night, and bbc verify will be looking into them to try to help you get to the facts. And you can watch the Cbs NewsVice President ial debate in simulcast here on bbc news. We are going to have a full build up from 1 am British Summer Time or 8 pm eastern time. Buckingham place has announced that Princess Beatrice is pregnant with her second child the late Queens Granddaughter and her husband, edoardo mapelli mozzi, are preparing to welcome the new addition to their family in early spring. Hello. Whilst flooding continues to be a concern across parts of england, the Flood Warnings we had earlier today across Southwest England have now cleared and those across Northern England have reduced in numbers. We still have problems across the midlands, where a number of Flood Warnings remain in force. The days sunniest weather on tuesday was to be found in Northern Ireland, barely a cloud in the sky there in portrush. And overnight tonight, it is across Northern Ireland and scotland, well keep the clearest conditions, some Fog Patches likely to develop in scotland through the night. England and wales keeping a lot of cloud and there will still be outbreaks of Rain Patchy rain at that across eastern areas. Its going to be light rain too, so its not going to cause any further problems with flooding. Now, heading into the next couple of days, High Pressure is going to dominate our weather picture, eventually squishing the weather front. So, although we start off with a bit of patchy rain across eastern areas of england, eventually over the next day or two it will become a good deal drier. Chilly winds, then, across central and eastern england, probably brightening up in wales and Northern England, but the best of the sunshine in scotland and Northern Ireland once weve lost any early Morning Mist and Fog Patches. Temperatures quite widely around about 15 degrees, give or take. And then wednesday night, its a cold one, temperatures getting well down into single figures and are cold enough for a nip of frost in sheltered areas of rural scotland. So it will be a cold start to the day as we look at the forecast into thursday. Plenty of sunshine, again, once any early Morning Mist and Fog Patches have cleared out of the way. Still quite a chilly breeze blowing across southern coastal counties of england, but away from that should feel ok in the October Sunshine with temperatures around 15 17 degrees. These temperatures are a bit above average for the time of year. We should manage another fine day for the most part across much of scotland and most of england and wales through friday, but for Northern Ireland and western scotland, the winds pick up through Friday Afternoon and eventually well start to see outbreaks of rain arriving, but really quite late in the day. Temperatures not changing too much highs for most between around 14 17 celsius. But into the Weekend, we are going to see a bigger change in our Weather Pattern as low pressure starts to push These Bands Of Rain Across the uk, accompanied by some strengthening winds. And its Notjust Rain that well have into the Weekend. Next Week also looks pretty unsettled, with rain at times. Bye for now.
