This Years Event is also a chance for the partys four leadership candidates to audition for the top job, with each of them due to give a speech on wednesday. But some of them have been speaking today. Lets speak to our political correspondent, hannah miller, whos been following developments in birmingham. The mood here is a lot more upbeat than was initially expected. They are trying to get their heads down and work out who the next leader should be. It was a disastrous Election Result for the conservatives but in some ways, the way people are going around here, with rallying cries for each of the leadership contenders, you would not necessarily think it had been as bad as it was. In the last hour we have heard on the main stage from one of the leadership candidates tom tugendhat, widely regarded as the most centrist of the candidates. This is what he had to say about the reasons why the party lost. Well, look, lets be honest. The day one action is to reform the central party machinery. It isnt working. There have been. Applause i dont know about you, but i was on doorsteps across england, and i have spoken to hundreds of people across the united kingdom about how that election worked. And lets be honest, thousands of activists, hundreds of candidates put their absolute all into a campaign and were let down by others. It wasnt this party that failed. It wasnt the ideas that failed. It was the centre that failed. And we need to own that. And so, from my perspective, let me just say to all of you, im sorry. The infighting in westminster, the chaos in westminster, and then the campaign, they all let you down. Im sorry. Applause. The candidates will do interviews like that on the main stage. Kemi badenoch is next and she has been making the weather in the last couple of days at this conference, especially around comments she made in relation to Maternity Pay when she suggested that Business Regulation had gone too far and she said she was misrepresented by people who suggested she said she was not completely on board with Maternity Pay as it is at the moment. She has had her supporters out clarifying those comments and she clarified them herself. This is what her supporters say about why they think Kemi Badenoch should be the leader. Shes getting mobbed everywhere she goes. People are kind of going up to her wanting selfies, and her stand is very, very busy. So its quite clear that the members really want kemi in that final two. Shes been very busy. To be fair, all the candidates have got Chockablock Diaries here, but you do see that Star Quality in a way that really does make her stand out, because people want to be around her. You know, were amongst friends here, were all conservatives, but theres still something very special about kemi. The comments that she made about Maternity Pay, i know she said shes been misrepresented. Yeah. But were they a misstep . Well, i mean genuinely, if you look at the full, what she said, it was quite clear she was talking more generally about regulations on businesses. And then the interviewer, i think, was being specific. So to be honest, i think it was a genuine misunderstanding. But kemi is very, very clear, actually, she wants to get Business Regulations down, rather. And of course shes a mother, you know, shes the one candidate who actually has been on Maternity Leave herself. So i think its quite transparently obvious that what has been reported is not what she actually said. I guess the point more widely, though, is that she kind of, there was that miscommunication. And if youre going to be the leader of the opposition, then communication is the number one. Well, i think there was a miscommunication, if i can be fair, by the journalist, who was clearly trying to talk specifically about one issue and kemi. And kemi answered on a different. Yeah. But kemi wanted to broaden it out and talk more broadly about Business Regulation, which she is very passionate about, but also, as you know. Avoiding it . Well, no, she wasnt avoiding the question. But also, you know, shes got some messages she wants to get across, including being pro business and also being pro family. And that was really important. It was one of her five top issues that she said at her launch speech. So i think its quite clear and obvious that actually what was perhaps intentionally misinterpreted by some People Yesterday was not actually what she was saying. Robertjenrick and james cleverly, the other contenders, have also been doing rallies today. We have seen them and their supporters walking through the Conference Hall with placards, as they tried to convince mps and members that they are the right person to take the party forward. This conference has a different vibe to what we are used to. Much more of a contest between the four and an exploration of ideas may be but we will not actually know who the winner is for quite some time, until the beginning of november. After this stage, mps get it down to two contenders and those contenders then go forward to the members who have the final say. Kemi badenoch is thought to be the favourite amongst the members if she makes it onto the ballot paper. Robert jenrick is ahead with mp5. There are many people here who are going in and listening and trying to make up their minds. Thanks forjoining us. The latest live pictures here from beirut. You can see some of the smoke rising over the city after the latest wave of israeli attacks. Some of the latest lines on the Middle East. Benjamin netanyahu has been telling the people of iran that their regime is plunging the region of the Middle East deeper into war. We heard from the us Secretary Of StateAntony Blinken who said the world is safer without the leader of Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah who was killed by israel on friday. Much more to come in the next hour. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello. Its another wet day with low pressure firmly in charge, bringing some quite windy Weather Conditions as well. For some of us, that is. Weve still got some problems with flooding as well, and no wonder why this month has been extraordinary in terms of rainfall. South newington, weve had over four times the average rainfall and not far off double the previous September Rainfall record. It has been exceptionally wet and we still have a number of Flood Warnings in force. A couple of clusters, really, One Down towards the South West and another cluster of warnings in the midlands. The one bit of good news i have for you today is although there is more rain in the forecast, the heaviest Rain Isnt going to be affecting these areas and so we should start to see modest improvements. I think in terms of the number of Flood Warnings, starting to come down. But that said, further north across Northern England, we are looking at some Heavy Rain here. We could see around 60 80mm of rain and it has been quite a wet month so far, so we could start to see some flooding issues build in across Northern England as we go on through the rest of today and overnight tonight. Then our area of low pressure works out into the north sea. It strengthens a bit and so could bring us gusts of wind into the 50 miles an hour across East Anglia, with more outbreaks of rain on the way here. Across the North And West of the uk, though, its a case of the weather slowly becoming a little bit quieter through the course of the night. Tuesdays forecast, then, more wet and windy weather for East Anglia and South East england. Otherwise, should see a fair bit of sunshine coming through across northern and western areas of the uk. A drier kind of day. In the sunshine, temperatures running a little bit above average in edinburgh, 13 is average for october, 1a In London is a little bit below par. So give ortake, were around about the average. For wednesday and into thursday as well, High Pressure then starts to take over. Now, we could still have the dribs and drabs of this Weather System affecting the far South East of england, still bringing some windy and rather cool Weather Conditions into East Anglia and the South East. But otherwise, with that area of high Pressure Building in, could be some Mist And Fog patches to start the day, but otherwise a drier spell of weather with more in the way of sunshine. And this sunnier, drier spell of Weather Looks like its going to hang around for the rest of this week, but into the weekend it turns wetter again and some of the rain could turn out to be pretty heavy this weekend.
