In other developments, hezbollah s Deputy Chief says it is ready for an israeli Ground Offensive and will keep up the fight against israel. The group will choose a successor at the earliest opportunity after the assasination of the Groups Leader, Hassan Nasrallah, by israel on friday. These are the live pictures from the same area. You can see the smoke still rising. Well, we had been able to see some of the smoke rising over the city. A Planejust Landing there. But that is the scene there. But that is the scene there in beirut. There is some of the smoke after that wave of israeli strikes has been continuing. 0ur Correspondent in beirut, hugo bachega, has the latest from there. In beirut, eyes on tv to watch hezbollah s number two, naim qassem, who spoke for the first time since the assassination of the Groups Leader by its greatest enemy, israel. And he was defiant. Speaking from an undisclosed location, he said the killing of Hassan Nasrallah last week was a big blow. But he tried to project strength. He denied that hezbollah s Military Capability had been diminished and said the group was ready to fight israel if it decided to invade lebanon. And there are growing signs a Ground Incursion is imminent. These israeli troops have been positioned near the border with lebanon as israel says its offensive against hezbollah will not stop with the killing of nasrallah. Back in beirut this was the scene this morning after an Air Strike overnight. A city shocked by this conflict, now increasingly in the middle of it. This is the building that was hit and there is still a heavy Security Presence here with people coming here all the time to see the damage. And this is the road connecting the airport to the city centre, which is a five Minute Drive from here. For the first time in this conflict, a part of beirut that is not in a Hezbollah Area has been hit. The popular front for the liberation of palestine, another iranian backed group, says three of its leaders were killed in the attack. Translation we were sitting on the balcony smoking sheet. | on the balcony smoking shisha. Armageddon struck at 00 55 in the morning. Did you ever think that something like this could happen here . If i had known something like this would happen, i wouldnt have brought 20 people with me and put them in harms way. This is the heart of beirut. The whole world could be set on fire apart from beirut. Lebanon says as many asi million people have already been displaced by the violence. Some are escaping conflict not for the first time. These syrian refugees are going back to their country. Translation syria is better here now, | at least for the children. Men can sort themselves out, but what should women and children do . They had come to lebanon seeking sanctuary, but this country is no longer safe. I have been getting more details on the latest situation from Bbc Persian middle East Correspondent in beirut, nafiseh kohnavard. After last nights airstrikes on the building behind me, which is in a sunni Majority Area in beirut. It is part of beirut and it is not Hezbollah Stronghold that this time was attacked. It seems that it was a targeted assassination because only one floor its the sixth floor of an 11 Storey Building was hit. Clearly the target was in the sixth floor of this building. But around the building i can see a lot of cars that are damaged and smashed and windows shattered. And the sound, the Blast Sound we could hear all over. We could hear it from across beirut. My home was shaken, which wasnt very close, but not too far as well. But my home was shaken because the blast was so strong. And this is the first time, after the war of 2006 between hezbollah and israel, that a part outside Hezbollah Stronghold is being hit by israel. And now that im talking to you right now, we have israeli drones overhead, flying so low we can hear its buzzing. It was the same case yesterday. Its unusually in the past two days, they are unusually, these drones are flying so, so low. And it seems that Thats Part of the surveillance. So there are a big fear among people that soon enough we will have similar assassinations or similar attacks in other parts of beirut that are considered relatively safe and out of the target for israel. Nafiseh kohnavard with the latest details there from beirut. Lets get the perspective from Israel And Jerusalem because our middle East Correspondent yolande kneu East CorrespondentYolande Knell is there has been updating us on the latest details the israelis have been getting about their Military Operations in lebanon. Their Military Operations in lebanon their Military Operations in lebanon. ~. ,. , lebanon. We have been hearing from them lebanon. We have been hearing from them how lebanon. We have been hearing from them how they lebanon. We have been hearing from them how they have lebanon. We have been hearing from them how they have reallyi from them how they have really been hitting on multiple fronts inside lebanon, targeting what they say are rockets and Rocket Launch sites, but also senior figures from hezbollah as a group. And the assessment as it is reported in the israeli media is they have really destroyed much of hezbollah s firepower with this really intense Air Campaign that has gone on over the last week. But still what we are hearing, particularly from the mayor of those towns in the north of israel that have been evacuated as a result of a Cross Border Missile fire that has gone on now for ii Missile Fire that has gone on now for 11 months, since the start of the war in gaza. Those mayors want their citizens to be able to return, real safety on the border and they say that comes only with a Ground Invasion, in dealing with the infrastructure that hezbollah has set up, just close to the border and even under the border, since that devastating war between Israel And Hezbollah back in 2006. They say people will not go back to their homes unless that is dealt with, so there is increasing speculation here about whether israel will go for a Ground Invasion. Those comments the latest ones by the israeli Defence Minister, yoav gallant, really hinting that things are going to move in that direction with him addressing Ground Troops close to the board and telling them, you are part of this effort. We trust you to be able to accomplish anything and we will use all the capabilities that we have. So they have so been some reports in the Wall Street Journal that actually elite israeli Military Units have already carried out limited and focused raids across the border. That is not something thatis border. That is not something that is confirmed at all on the israeli side. But the question being asked is, if israel was to go into Southern Lebanon as well, what would it do . Its aim would be to push hezbollah away from the border, to make it keep to the un Security Council Resolution that ended the 2006 war. That means making sure hezbollah is to the north of the river. So would israel go and try to occupy that big area in the south of lebanon on up to the river or would it go for a smaller Scale Operation closer to the border . Yolande knell there, our middle East Correspondent in jerusalem. Ijust want East Correspondent in jerusalem. I just want to show you some pictures we have received of israeli troops in the north of Israel Close to the north of Israel Close to the lebanon border. You can see them amassing there and there is a lot of speculation obviously about the possibility of a Ground Invasion of Southern Lebanon. Whether these are israeli forces are massing for that kind of Ground Incursion, we dont know, but we have heard from israels Defence Minister, yoav gallant, telling some of the troops in that area that they should be prepared to use forces from the air, sea and land. And when he talks about the land, that would seem to imply some sort of Ground Invasion. But we will see what happens with that. There have certainly been reports that if there isnt even a full scale invasion, there could be Special Forces who are into parts of Southern Lebanon on or who may have already done that already tried to curtail some of the Hezbollah Rocket Fire that has been coming into northern israel. Yoav gallant, the israeli Defence Minister, saying the priority of the israeli authorities to get those 60,000 or so israeli civilians who have had to leave the area, to get them back to their homes and make It Safe for them. The United Nations says 100,000 people have fled lebanon for syria since israeli strikes began. The lebanese prime Minister Najib Mikati has warned that more than i million people could be forced to leave their homes. Many have already fled the south of the country and headed north to cities like beirut. Anna foster has been to martyrs square in beirut to speak to some of the displaced. Even days after people started fleeing the southern suburbs of beirut after that attack that killed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, many of them are still on the streets because they dont feel safe going back there. And because those attacks, those Air Strikes, are still continuing. But you can see, this is not an ideal place for people and families to be. A lot of them fled very quickly, they grabbed what they could, so a lot of people dont have any fresh clothes with them. We are meeting people who havent brought any toys for their children. It is very hot here during the day as well, so they are sort of struggling to find a bit of shade and a bit of shelter. Every now and then people will arrive and hand out food, but as you can see, its an enormously difficult situation for lots of people, and theyjust dont feel yet safe enough to go back to their homes. This man and his wife fled here with their two children on friday night, just after the huge explosion that killed Hassan Nasrallah. Translation my children havent smiled since that time. They are in shock. We feel fear and terror, and we have no idea where to go or what to do. My children dont have any milk, and we dont have any money. People are giving us food to eat. I dont know what to do. My house is only ten metres away from where the missile fell. We have no idea how we managed to escape. We were afraid something would happen to us. We were fearful for the country. And i dont want anything bad to happen to this country. I want it to be better. It has been 20 years since i left syria with my family. We live in constant anxiety and fear. We dont feel safe. I have no idea what to do or where to go. 0ur official papers and passports are all left at home. We were unable to get them because we were so terrified. Well, we will have much more from lebanon in the next hour, but. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Do stay with us. Officials in nepal say the number of people known to have been killed by landslides and floods in recent days has reached 200. More than 20 others are still missing with Rescue Efforts ongoing. Roslyn gabriel is national director of the Aid Group World vision international nepal and she updated me on the latest Rescue Efforts on the ground. Its been a massive, um, massive damages occurred in both kathmandu, but also out in the rural areas that are downstream in nepal, particularly down in the southern districts. And there were seeing huge amounts of flooding. Weve seen landslides across nepal, across many of the different districts. To the extent that the Kathmandu Valley is actually completely blocked, all the roads going in and out are blocked, which kind of gives you a little bit of a picture of the scale of the flooding here. Yeah. And the fact that those roads are blocked, does that make it harder for Rescue Teams to, to get to the people who need their help . It does. They have set Helicopter Rescues in place. And there are local teams which are being, that have sprung into action. So the government does have Rescue Teams in all of the different districts. And so, they have been put into action across the country. How unusual are these kind of devastating Weather Conditions in nepal . Unfortunately, were seeing it happen more and more and on an annual basis. This is the second flood thats occurred in kathmandu this year. But this one was much, much larger. And the rainfalls have been the highest on record in the last 5a years, not only in Kathmandu Valley, but across multiple districts. So we are seeing more extreme weather happening. Nepal is very vulnerable to climate change, and unfortunately, were going to continue to see these events unfold. And the Death Toll, as i said, about 200 people so far. Are there fears that that Death Toll could actually rise when Rescue Teams do reach some of the Remoter Areas . Yeah. Thats correct. I was speaking with our teams in the field this afternoon and we know of at least one community one whole local Government Area thats still underwater. So theyre still not able to to reach a lot of that community. So rescue is ongoing. And it is unfortunately expected that the numbers will be continuing to rise. Parties roslyn gabriel, who is in kathmandu. In the past hour the bbc has published a report into the culture of the Celebrity Dance show Strictly Come Dancing. The bbc has apologised to a Contestant Amanda Abbington and upheld some of her complaints against her Dance Partner, Giovanni Pernice, but cleared him of the most serious allegations. With me is is our media and Arts Correspondent David sillito. What have they said . Strictly come dancing what have they said . Strictly come dancing one what have they said . Strictly come dancing one of what have they said . Strictly come dancing one of the what have they said . Strictly come dancing one of the biggest programmes around the world by a country style, known internationally as tech is dancing with the stars. This is about a couple from last years show, Amanda Abbington and Giovanni Pernice. Amanda abington said that from day three she was making complaints about her Dance Partner and midway through the show left Strictly Come Dancing and later made a series of allegations about Giovanni Pernice, which she has always strenuously denied, of mean, crueland abusive behaviour. There has been an investigation into those complaints, which was reported today from bbc studios, which is the Production Arm of the bbc. It says it is apologising to Amanda Abbington and says it has upheld some, but not all of her complaints. So she is definitely seeing this as a degree of vindication for what she did. ,. , , she did. Yes, there has been reaction she did. Yes, there has been reaction from she did. Yes, there has been reaction from her she did. Yes, there has been reaction from her and she did. Yes, there has been reaction from her and from l she did. Yes, there has been reaction from her and from him . Shall we say, it is a remarkably different interpretations of this from both sides. A spokesperson for Giovanni Pernice says it has been a torrid nine months, he has always denied allegations of abusive behaviour and he is saying essentially only the weakest allegations have been found against him and the serious ones have been thrown out and he is looking upon it as essentially as a degree of vindication, whereas Amanda Abbington very clearly believes that she is entirely vindicated in making the complaints. She said, Todays Apology from the bbc is a vindication of my complaints, notjust for me, complaints, not just for me, but complaints, notjust for me, but also a vindication of other people have contacted me since i made my complaint to express their concerns about their experiences on chips act. It has been a very torrid three months for the bbc as well, as you say, its flagship show. H0 . . . You say, its flagship show. How embarrassing you say, its flagship show. How embarrassing has you say, its flagship show. How embarrassing has this you say, its flagship show. Firm embarrassing has this been for them . Strictly come dancing is about one thing, it is about saturday night, joy, glitter, fun and for the last eight months or so, all the headlines have been about what goes on behind. 0ne have been about what goes on behind. One of the headlines was, The Dark Heart behind the jov was, The Dark Heart behind the joy. So it has been a very difficult time. The show has made a lot of changes. It says there are now workshops for the staff talking about behaviour, interviews with the contestants before and after and also observers and all the Rehearsal Rooms so there is a third party theyre watching what is going on behind the scenes. On behind the scenes. David, aood to on behind the scenes. David, good to talk on behind the scenes. David, good to talk to on behind the scenes. David, good to talk to you, on behind the scenes. David, good to talk to you, thank. On behind the scenes. David, l good to talk to you, thank you. David sillito there with the latest on that Strictly Come Dancing saga. Lets go to austria because. For the first time since World War two a Far Right Party has come top in the countrys general election. Projected results give the Freedom Party just over 29 of the vote more than two points ahead of the ruling austrian Peoples Party on 26. 5 with the Social Democrats in third. But this isnt enough for the Freedom Party to secure an outright majority, with all the main parties ruling out any coalition which includes the fpo leader, herbert kickl. Austrias president has called for negotiations in order to find a compromise. Fears of the conservatives forming a coalition with the Freedom Party led to a small group of protesters demonstrating outside the Parliament Building in vienna, carrying anti nazi banners. The american singer, Songwriter And ActorKris Kristofferson has died at the aged of 88. He played a major role in defining american Country Music in the 1970s. He was known for the songs me and bobby mcgee, and help me make it through the night. As an actor he starred in Pat Garret and Billy The Kid and a star is born. Steve knibbs has been looking back at his life. Lay your head upon my pillow. It was Kris Kristofferson s mix of Songwriting Talent and rugged charm that turned this Texan Oil RigHelicopter Pilot into one of the biggest stars of the 70s. I was born upon the tide and with the sea i did abide. Alongside willie nelson, Johnny Cash and waylonjennings, he took a bit of Rocks Attitude and musical freedom to create a new sound, 0utlaw country. Youre finished. And there was more than a touch of that mood in his movie roles in films like convoy. Because we have the brightest love. And a star is born, in which he appeared with barbra streisand. Im sorry this booze will blow your brain. He played a singer with a taste for the excesses of the music world, and there were more than a few parallels with his own life at the time. Kris kristofferson, whos died at the age of 88. Lets you bring you the latest from the middle east. We have received these pictures of israeli forces gathering in the north of israel, close to the lebanese border. Tanks and troops there. It comes amid heightened speculation that there could be an israeli Ground Offensive on Southern Lebanon on that is imminent. Certainly, we have heard from the israeli Defence Minister today, yoav gallant, saying israel is prepared to use forces from air, sea and land, and that would imply there is at least a possibility that a Ground Invasion could be imminent. Let us show you also be seen live in beirut. Still some smoke rising from the latest israeli attacks there. As israel expands its Military Operations in lebanon, hezbollah has said that it will choose a successor to Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed by israel on friday. Quote, at the earliest opportunity, they said. There is the main latest developments from lebanon and from israel. Well keep you fully updated throughout the day. Stay with us here on bbc news. Another wet day with low pressure firmly in charge of bringing quite windy Weather Conditions as well. The bus. We still have some problems with flooding as well and no wonder why. This month has been extraordinary in terms of rainfall. South newington, weve had over four times the average rainfall and not far off double the previous September Rainfall record. It has been exceptionally wet and we still have a number of Flood Warnings in force. A couple of clusters, really, One Down towards the South West and another cluster of warnings in the midlands. The one bit of good news i have for you today is although there is more rain in the forecast, the heaviest Rain Isnt going to be affecting these areas and so we should start to see modest improvements. I think in terms of the number of Flood Warnings, starting to come down. But that said, further north across Northern England, we are looking at some Heavy Rain here. We could see around 60 80mm of rain and it has been quite a wet month so far, so we could start to see some flooding issues build in across Northern England as we go on through the rest of today and overnight tonight. Then our area of low pressure works out into the north sea. It strengthens a bit and so could bring us gusts of wind into the 50 miles an hour across East Anglia, with more outbreaks of rain on the way here across the North And West of the uk, though, its a case with more outbreaks of rain on the way here. Across the North And West of the uk, though, its a case of the weather slowly becoming a little bit quieter through the course of the night. Tuesdays forecast, then, more wet and windy weather for East Anglia and South East england. 0therwise should see a fair bit of sunshine coming through across northern and western areas of the uk. A drier kind of day. In the sunshine, temperatures running a little bit above average in edinburgh, 13 is average for october, 14 in london is a little bit below par. So give ortake, were around about the average. For wednesday and into thursday as well, High Pressure then starts to take over. Now we could still have the dribs and drabs of this Weather System affecting the far South East of england, still bringing some windy and rather cool Weather Conditions into East Anglia in the South East. But otherwise, with that area of High Pressure, area of high Pressure Building in, could be some Mist And Fog patches to start the day, but otherwise a drier spell of weather with more in the way of sunshine. And this sunnier, drier spell of weather it looks like its going to hang around for the rest of this week, but into the weekend it turns wetter again and some of the rain could turn out to be pretty heavy this weekend.
