Here in the uk, candidates for the conservative Party Leadership Contest make their pitch at the annual conference. And New Zealand has regained the World Record for the largest number of people taking part in a haka. Welcome to the programme. We start in the Middle East, where israel has carried out what it called large scale strikes on yemen. Israel says it was targeting houthis energy facilities. A Power Plant and Sea Port were hit in the yemeni city of hodeidah. Videos have been posted on social media. Clearly a real difference to what we heard just a few days ago from world leaders, who were trying to arrange some sort of ceasefire deal, some sort of de escalation. They were talking about 21 days of no military action, of talks, but what weve seen over the last couple of days, and particularly with that pivotal moment here in the Middle East on Friday Evening, that large Scale Attack here In Beirut, and the News Yesterday that Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, had been killed, shows really that events here are moving very, very quickly, and it seems that western efforts at diplomacy right now are just not keeping up. With the latest here In Beirut is our middle East Correspondent Hugo bachega. Israel says its fight against hezbollah will not stop, and this is proof of it. Smoke over southern beirut, hezbollah s base struck again. Driving through dahieh, once hezbollah s beating heart, it now looks like a ghost town. Some people are still trying to leave. Their stronghold no longer safe. Some have come here, martyrs square in central beirut. The site of revolutions, now the site of a growing crisis. Lebanon saysi million people have already been displaced. Translation after the strikes | against sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and those jets overhead, im not only afraid for myself, im fearing for my parents, my friends, my relatives, and all the people of dahieh. We are all in it together. We all shed tears of blood. Translation i feel devastated, thats what i feel, as if im 100 years old. There is nothing. Are you concerned about the future . Translation of course | im afraid about the future. Im afraid about our situation. Im afraid about everything. Lebanon is now in a tense and anxious wait to see how hezbollah is going to respond. The group has been weakened, its leadership has been decimated, but it hasnt been defeated. It still has sophisticated weapons, thousands of fighters, and allies in yemen, Iraq And Syria who could also join the fight. The killing of one man can set the entire Middle East ablaze. Israels campaign is leaving a trail of destruction. The next phase is likely to include a Ground Invasion of southern lebanon. This country is now waiting, fearful about what may come next. Hugo bachega, bbc news, beirut. Israel has released the latest figures from the idf. They say that theyve hit around 120 hezbollah targets here in lebanon today, and in the east of the country, at least 3a people have been killed in a series of israeli Air Strikes there, although that number is expected to rise. Our senior international Correspondent 0rla Guerin has been to the Bekaa Valley and sent this report. Sunday afternoon in the Bekaa Valley. Allahu akbar a massive israeli strike, and just one of many. There were at least 30 in a single hour. Danger here in every direction. This man says, our neighbours, the jamilfamily next door, are all gone. Quickly, quickly, help me others are fighting for their lives after strikes earlier this week, like noor, whos six years old. She was injured on her own doorstep on monday. Here she was before. Herfamily say shes very bright and sociable, and everyone loves her. This video was taken shortly before the attack. Noor was afraid, and she was praying. Her Mother Reema now prays by her bedside. Suddenly, as we filmed, a new threat. Well, within the last few seconds, weve had a strike. We heard the plane in the air, then we felt the impact. The windows here shook, they rattled, and its an indication of how nowhere here is safe. Even patients in Hospitals Cant feel completely safe. Minutes later, the Emergency Department is filling up. An ambulance has just arrived, now bringing casualties from the latest Air Strike. Theyre being treated in the Emergency Department. Theres a lot of anger and tension. People are stressed, wondering when this is going to stop. Noor s family wants to tell the world that they are not hezbollah, and neither is she. She is just a little girl. 0rla guerin, bbc news, in the Bekaa Valley. Well, israeli strikes are continuing, notjust in lebanon this evening. Israel has announced that its started a large Scale Operation against houthi targets in yemen as well. We can go tojerusalem and speak to our correspondentjon donison. Jon, whats the latest . Well, you are right. Israel is fighting on multiple fronts today. In lebanon, in gaza, of course, and as you say, in yemen. There, israel says it carried out Air Strikes on one of the countrys biggest ports, used to import oil, and also two power stations. Officials in yemen are saying the number of people killed is four, with 29 injured at this point. Now, that is some 1,800 kilometres away from israel, so the reach of Israels Military is long. They say these strikes were in response to attacks carried out by iranian backed houthi rebels there. Just a few days ago, jon, there was this us discussion about a Ceasefire Plan for 21 days. Apparently, they had worked on some of the detail of that with israel. Is there any sign of that coming to fruition, or is that gone now . I think thats gone now, and you have to remember, of course, that although america said that israel was involved in coming up with that Ceasefire Plan, when prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to New York and gave that speech at the United Nations General Assembly on friday, but at that moment, he had already authorised the strike on the hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, which really escalated things dramatically, so it doesnt seem really that israel was ready to go along with that Ceasefire Plan, and i think this isjust another example, really, showing the impotence, if you like, of the international community, and particularly israels strongest ally the united states, in guiding israeli policy. Israel says it will do whatever it needs to to protect its citizens, and its not really listening to anyone at the moment. Jon, the head of Israels Army talked about a possible Ground Incursion by israeli forces into lebanon. Does that look imminent . We dont know if and when that is going to happen. Certainly, the israelis have been moving troops to the border, and everyone here really, if you speak to analysts, they say in order to completely dismantle hezbollah, its going to take more than Air Strikes. Youre going to have to push in with a Ground Invasion. But of course, that comes with risks. You will remember back in 2006, the last time we had a full Scale War between hezbollah and israel, well, israel did invade into southern lebanon, but eventually, they were pushed back and there were a lot of israeli military casualties. So that is a calculation that israel is going to have to make. But if it wants to achieve its primary aim, which is dismantling hezbollah and allowing those 60,000 israeli citizens who live in the north of israel who have been forced to leave their homes for the past year because of Cross Border Fire from hezbollah, well, it does seem that at some point, some sort of Ground Incursion is going to be inevitable. Thank you, jon, and of course, those israeli strikes have continued here in Beirut Today in the Southern Suburbs, The Sound of drones has been heard in the sky. People are still continuing to move away from the southern and eastern parts of the country, and there are still people here on the streets in Beirut Tonight as well, people who flood those Southern Suburbs of dahieh on Friday Evening after that huge Air Strike that killed the leader of hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah. Many of those people spending another night on the streets tonight, and the government here in lebanon trying to do what they can to feed those people and find shelter for them, but again, that sense of uncertainty that has really been all pervasive over the last week or so continues here in lebanon tonight. Thank you in the us, President Biden has in the last half an hour said an all out war in the Middle East has to be avoided. He told reporters that he would be talking to the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu but didnt say when. With me is Parham Ghobadi from bbc persian. Told me through the iranian officials issued Statements Today after the killing of Hassan Nasrallah. Both had almost run s reaction would be the Resistance Movement that would carry out retaliatory strikes, and what they mean by a Resistance Movement is a Rainy and proxies, not iran. Their Statement Kind of equals what the iranians Supreme Leader said yesterday. In his statement, he said the Resistance Movement and has full i would carry out retaliatory strikes, and Nasrallahs Blood would not go and avenged. Two key important factors are missing in his statement. One, that irans Role And Involvement in that, because previously, typically, they would always say iran would take heart revenge. This time, their Tone And Language was much softer and more restRained. The other was, irans involvement. They did not mention iran would carry out these retaliatory strikes. You mentioned the phrase iranians proxies. Just tell us what that means, what that involves. They stem from houthis in yemen to militias in iraq, to lebanon and syria. For example, a few hours ago, the israeli army carried out strikes against houthi is in yemen. That came after Benjamin Netanyahu ate a on their own for the time being, because netanyahu ate a after Benjamin Netanyahu ate a few days ago at the un general few days ago at the un general assembly warned iran and said, assembly warned iran and said, if you strike us, we will if you strike us, we will strike you back, and the long strike you back, and the long arm of israel can reach arm of israel can reach anywhere in iran and the middle anywhere in iran and the Middle East. We saw a few hours after east. We saw a few hours after that, they carried out a strike that, they carried out a strike against Hezbollah Hassan against hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah, and today against nasrallah, and today against houthis, the other is Rainy and houthis, the other is Rainy and allies in yemen. Thanks very much for talking to allies in yemen. Thanks very much for talking to us. Us. Us. Us. Us. Wreck of the other irani and us. Wreck of the other irani and allies. Allies. Lets speak to khalil lets speak to Khalil HelouIn Beirut. Helou In Beirut. He is a Military Analyst and he is a Military Analyst and retired lebanese army general. Retired lebanese army general. Thank you for coming on the thank you for coming on the programme. Welcome. Ijust want programme. Welcome. Ijust want to get your assessment of what to get your assessment of what hezbollah will do next. Hezbollah will do next. For the time being, we can say for the time being, we can say very confidently that the chain very confidently that the Chain Of Command in hezbollah is of command in hezbollah is totally dismantled for the time totally dismantled for the time being, and this is for sure being, and this is for sure temporarily. In the hezbollah temporarily. In the hezbollah regional commands are working regional commands are working on their own for the time on their own for the time being, because since the being, because since the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah, till now, there is not any angle major leader in hezbollah that appears in the media or has been reached by anyone, and we assume that the persons who died with Hassan Nasrallah in the strike of israel two days ago, all of them are first rank, and the others, if they are still alive, are hiding for the time being. So this is a serious gap within hezbollah, and we were waiting for a strategic retaliation because of this assassination, and many western observers for years, and even western diplomats In Beirut and arab diplomats In Beirut were assessing that hezbollah is capable of firing between 1000 and 1500 missiles per day on israel and causing damages and casualties by hundreds or thousands in israel. This did not happen, and in nearly every point in israel. These missiles have not been used yet. Even they have been destroyed with the Arms Depots and warehouses of missiles by the israeli strikes, especially the israeli strikes, especially the recent strikes since September 17 till now, all they need an iranian clearance, other personnel who was in charge of these missiles is now nonoperational because of the casualties. So whatever the explanation, there are signs of weaknesses in hezbollah, at least temporarily. Weaknesses in hezbollah, at least temporarily. Thank you very much least temporarily. Thank you very much for least temporarily. Thank you very much for coming least temporarily. Thank you very much for coming on least temporarily. Thank you very much for coming on thej very much for coming on the programme. Very much for coming on the programme very much for coming on the programme. To austria now, and projections following the countrys General Election put the far right Freedom Party in Pole Position to form a Coalition Government for the first time since World War two. Theyre expected to beat both the ruling conservatives, the austrian peoples party, which is predicted to receive 26. 2 of the vote, and the social democrats, predicted to gain 20. 4 . Lets Ta Ke lets take it to these live pictures. The Freedom PartyLeader Herbert Kickl says his party is ready to lead and has just wrapped up speaking to supporters there. Lets speak to our correspondent in vienna, bethany bell. Took us through what has been happening . As we have seen, the Freedom Party supporters are celebrating their best result in federal General Election in austria with this result of around 28 29 , and this is. The leader of the party, herbert kickl, who is a fiery speaker, a divisive character, has tapped into concerns here in austria about migration, about rising prices and about the war in ukRaine. He is a very strong supporter of Austrias Neutrality and its against Eu Sanctions on russia. However, what will be difficulties forming a Coalition Government, because Mr Kickl is widely disliked by the other parties. All of the other parties in Austria Have said that they dont want to form a Coalition Government led by Mr Kickl. The only party that has suggested or not ruled out a coalition with the Freedom Party is the conservatives, but they have said that they will only do it if Mr KicklIsnt Part of the government, so it is likely to be a long, complicated process trying to put the government together. Bethany, thank you very much for talking us through the events there in austria. Thank you. Next to New Zealand. They have regained the World Record for the largest number of people taking part in a haka. Take a look. Quite a lot of people in there, as you can see. More than 6000, in fact. They all came together for the performance at the stadium in auckland. The haka is a traditional dance associated with New Zealands indigenous maori people. Its been made famous by the All Blacks Rugby Team ,who perform it before their matches. The previous record of 4,000 people was held by france. The organiser of the new Zealand Attempt said it was like a national treasure that had been taken from them. It seems now it has been restored. Stay with us here. Plenty more to come. Hello there. Although most of us have stayed dry this weekend, low pressure is sweeping in across england and is in Northern Ireland as we speak, that will hang around for the first few days of this upcoming week, so monday and tuesday certainly looking wetter and windier, Rather Cool wetter and windier, Rather Cool, but mid week, we start to see high Pressure Building on. That will settle things down and we will see increasing amounts of sunshine, but nights will be cool. Mr fogg will return. But till tuesday, it looks like england and wales bear the brunt of some heavy and persistent Rain again. Falling on saturated ground, we are likely to see the risk of further localised flooding in basis. Worth staying tuned to the forecast over the next few days. This area of low pressure is the culprit, which will become slow moving across England Nww a is, and the Rain will be heavy at times, persistent too, strong and gusty winds up to 60 mph around some Channel Coast and in toward south wales. But a dry night to come across northern areas, turning windy here as well. Single figures for northern and western scotland, with double figures further south. Dragging on some milder air. This area of low pressure. Into monday, it looks like this low Pressure System will grind to a halt across the uk as it bumps up against that area of high so it is a wet and windy start for large parts of england and wales, the Rain becoming more confined to parts of East Anglia, northern and eastern England And North midlands, north wales, anywhere in this zone could see some localised flooding, so stay tuned to the forecast. In the north, mainly dry, rather cloudy and on the cool side, and to the south, it will brighten up a bit. South wales and southern england will turn and southern england will turn a bit warmer, 17 18, will one or two showers, but the Rain continues across central, northern and eastern parts of england as we had through monday night. Still reigning across eastern England And East anglia. By the time we reach tuesday morning. Temperatures again mild in the south, cooler further north. That area of low pressure takes its time to move away eastwards, so it will still affect Eastern England on tuesday with strong winds, outbreaks of Rain, particularly towards East Anglia and the far south east, but high Pressure Building and further north and west. The wind a little bit like to hear, increasing sunshine, so it will feel warmer, 16 17 in the warmer spots, but still feeling quite raw further east with the strong winds and Rain. But High Pressure builds in to end the new week so it will settle down to good spells of sunshine but a return to some Mist And Fog overnight. This is bbc news.
