From the United Nations, where the Un Secretary general Antonio Guterres said violence in lebanon must stop now, he is gravely concerned by the dramatic escalation of events In Beirut in the last 2a hours, this cycle of violence must stop and all sites must step back from the brink of war. The people of lebanon, israel, and the wider region cannot afford an all out war. Have a Security Correspondent Frank Gardner reports on the latest escalation of conflict between israel and hezbollah. Heavy artillery fire. A devastating blow inflicted by israel, hitting the heart of hezbollah s Command Centre In Beirut. Within hours, the israeli military announced they had eliminated, as they put it, the groups leader. Hassan nasrallah had been Secretary General of hezbollah for 32 years, overseeing its growth into the worlds most heavily armed non state army. He was born in lebanon in 1960, growing up In Beirut s eastern bourj hammoud district. He took over the leadership in 1992 when his predecessor was assassinated by israel. To thousands, maybe millions of Shia Muslims in lebanon and beyond, he was a hero. To israel, he was a wanted terrorist. Armed with up to the minute intelligence, the israeli Air Force targeted the underground bunker where hezbollah s leadership was meeting. This is both a major escalation and a challenge to iran. Translation this is not | the limit of our capabilities. We must be very clear, there are more tools at our disposal and the message is simple anyone who threatens the state of israel will be reached, whether in the north, the south or even a more distant places. Or even in more distant places. Hezbollah s power has been seriously weakened by the recent assassinations, the sabotage of its communications and Air Strikes on its weapon dumps. But it still possesses powerful long range missiles, hidden underground. Will they now aim these at Tel Aviv and other cities in revenge . Will israel send troops into lebanon to find and destroy them 7 and can hezbollah recover from all these blows . I probably think they will fight on. Theyll take a few days to reorganise their Command And Control that has been utterly destroyed by very good israeli intelligence and incredible tactics, but its not strategy. Hezbollah s strategic ally is iran. Key to what happens next in the Middle East is what Ayatollah Khamenei decides. Iran has been humiliated but can it ill afford a war with israel. Frank gardner, bbc news. Live from jerusalem is our international editor, jeremy bowen. I was just i wasjust reading i was just reading us we were coming to talk to you that syria, they are the latest country to condemn the despicable israeli killing of Hassan Nasrallah, as it puts it. No. They regard the criticism they have had i stop. No. They regard the I Criticism they have had from iran, hamas, syria, is basically a parade of the usual suspects, countries, organisations that they would rather didnt exist, organisations that would rather israel didnt exist. They have killed the man who was seen for many years as possibly their most bitter enemy, certainly their most effective enemy because of the military success in the past that hezbollah had over the israelis. So, there is a question now aboutjust what the remains of the organisation does. There is clearly going to be a younger group of commanders who come up. They still, as Frank Wasjust reporting, have these powerful weapons which, as far as we know, are buried in tunnels. They released videos in the past of enormous tamils in mountainsides. So, they have a capacity. The question is what they do with it. And also, what israel does in response to that. You know, it is months and months and months since hezbollah first fired rockets into israel the day after the October The 7th attacks. In a sense, on that border war, there were rules of the game but those rules have gone now. That is why there is a lot of uncertainty and danger, people dont know what to expect. Emraan s president says the us is complicit in what happened Last Night. We had from the us Defence Secretary that they have spoken twice yesterday to israeli officials. How much did the united states really now that what israel was planning. Well, they said yesterday that they didnt know. However, they do provide the weapons, they provide the aircraft, they provide the aircraft, they provide the aircraft, they provide the bombs, and they have been Riding Israel with diplomatic cover since October The 7th last year there has been a massive channel, lots of special flights of enormous Transport Aircraft coming from the usa and bases around the world and its various military storehouses, delivering into israel. And you know, in a sense, the americans, while they have at times been saying to israel dont do things, they have said, Joe Biden for example, that Israel Shouldnt Kill so many civilians in Gaza And Shouldnt impose such suffering on them. And they also pushed as hard as they could for a diplomatic settlement in this business between hezbollah and the israelis. They were hoping they might make progress on that even yesterday at the un. And then of course, netanyahu made an uncompromising speech, and just after that, this attack took place that killed Hassan Nasrallah. Thing the americans, even though they have said they dont like Everything Israel does, they still provide it with the tools which it uses to do those things, and also come up do those things, and also come up with diplomatic protection and places like the un vetoing resolutions and someone. The german foreign resolutions and someone. The german Foreign Minister said that the situation in lebanon is extremely dangerous, the entire region could slip into an absolute spiral of violence. That is something we are getting close to having right now. Well, the israeli media is pretty excited about what has happened, and some of the journalists and stations who are pro government have been particularly excited about it. There is a lot of unanimity in israel about the necessity of fighting hezbollah. There is not a controversy about doing what they do. Israelis believe it might make them safer. The news of the death of the Hezbollah Leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in an israeli Air Strike, comes as Tens Of Thousands of people have fled their homes in lebanon, following an earlier series of israeli airstrikes. Many have gone to beirut where people living in some districts have also been advised by israel to move ahead of potential military action. 0ur Correspondent In Beirut, carine torbey, sent this update. Thousands and thousands of people spent their Night Yesterday in the street, and many remain there without any shelter. They had to flee intense israeli bombardment in the southern suburb of beirut, leading to an exodus of residents. For many here, the confirmation of israels killing of Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah was a shock. Woman cries the government is saying that it is working really hard to find a shelter for every single one of them, now that it is dealing with a massive Displacement Crisis all over the country. After people from the south, and now people from beirut are leaving their houses and fleeing the israeli Air Strikes. The un is warning that humanitarian needs are reaching unprecedented levels and the resources have been exhausted. The killing of Hassan Nasrallah is likely to send Shock Waves around the region and the world. Lets get some of that reaction. Iran a major backer of hezbollah voiced its anger. The Countrys Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref put it this way we warn the leaders of the occupying regime that the unjust bloodshed will bring about their destruction. While not directly referring to Hassan Nasrallahs death turkish President Recep Tayyip erdogan posted On X that lebanon and the lebanese people are the latest target of a policy of genocide, occupation and invasion. A very different reaction from us Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin who said the united states remains postured to protect us forces and facilities in the region and committed to the defence of israel. 0ur Correspondentjenny kumah is in washington. How significant is this statement . Well, it is consistent with us policy. It reiterates us support for israels right to defend itself. President Biden Yesterday made some comments on the strike before we had confirmation of the killing of the hair is leader. He said the usa didnt know about the strike for that it was about to happen. He also said he was concerned about escalation. We also had some comments from the us diplomat, antony blinken, who continued to push for a diplomatic solution. There is a sense of growing tension from the white house, as the attack came, as it did, in a week when the un had appealed for a ceasefire. And also happens just a few moments before prime Minister Netanyahu appeared before the un to talk about the need to strike at hezbollah. There will be a new president injust over a month. Civilians in both Gaza And Lebanon civilians in both Gaza And Lebanon. , ~ ,. Lebanon. Thank you very much for our lebanon. Thank you very much for your thoughts. So who was Hassan Nasrallah and how important a figure was he . Lets give you more details on his background and career. Born in 1960 Hassan Nasrallah grew up In Beirut s eastern bourj hammoud neighbourhood. He became leader of hezbollah in 1992 at the age of 32 after his predecessor was assassinated in an israeli helicopter strike. He played a Key Role in turning hezbollah into a major political and military force. Backed by iran hezbollah also trained hundreds of fighters from the palestinian Militant Group hamas. Ive been speaking to Sami Nader Director of the political Science Institute at Saintjoseph University of beirut. He gave his reaction to the killing of Hassan Nasrallah. This is definitely the major important event that happened this century in the Middle East, given its impact on the whole region, on the whole balance of power. Because what is at stake here is the Uranium Project in the region. Hassan nasrallah was not a simple leader, he was a key player in this bridge that iran has spent over a Decade Building across the Middle East to link tehran to the mediterranean. This Project Today took a major blow and definitely will reverberate across the whole region, not to mention the impact on lebanese domestic politics because Hassan Nasrallah was the man who was calling the shots, he was the man deciding the War And Peace and the country is in a middle of a deep economic crisis. A deep political divide, a society that is very fractured and there are concerns, even fears that this incident, this tragic incident will have repercussions on lebanese society. And this definitely as well, has an impact inside syria because Hassan Nasrallah played a major role to support the leader of syria, his troops are still operating inside syria. This is what is at stake, the whole architecture of the Middle East today. Not to mention that the impact of this killing on the war that is continuing. So, while hezbollah has the capability to continue the war and this Escalation Process . Has it the ability to go for a full blown war . We said previously that he doesnt want a full blown war he said previously that he doesnt want a full blown war but is prepared for it. The question is, is hezbollah prepared for a full blown war . A lot of questions, a lot of Anxiety And Fear here In Beirut and people are really, they are fearing what is coming next, how iran will react. This is a key question, the Killing Yesterday crossed all the great lines, and if iran is to get into the picture, it is now. All the red lines, and if iran is to get into the picture, it is now. Up to now, iran calculated to keep their distance from the conflict, not to fall in what they call the israeli trap. Does this still holds today . It is an important thing to observe for the coming days and actually, what is israels next move because they are regaining the momentum, will it continue . Are the objectives those that they stated, the return of the hostages and the return of the residents of the north or are there hidden objectives that we dont know of . A lot of questions and anxiety, we are in a deep anxiety here In Beirut. From the Saintjoseph University of beirut. While events in the Middle East are dominating headlines today, the United Nations general assembly is continuing in new york. Russias foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has just been speaking he had this to say about the israeli attack which killed the Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah and what he said was american involvement. tx american involvement. Another glaring example of Terrorist Methods as a means of achieving political aims is the inhumane attack on lebanon that transformed civilian technology into a lethal weapon. There must be an immediate investigation into this crime, but already, we cannot remain silent in the face of the many publications in the media, including in europe and here in the usa, that indicate to varying degrees the involvement and at the very least awareness of washington when it comes to the preparation of that terrorist attack. A russian Foreign Minister speaking at the un general assembly. Lets rejoin Anna Foster who is In Beirut. We have been reporting of the last few hours that israel are continuing to target those neighbourhoods In Beirut which are Hezbollah Strongholds. That is right. Welcome back to beirut. ,. ,. , is right. Welcome back to beirut. ,. ,. , beirut. The Sight And Sound of continuing beirut. The Sight And Sound of continuing israeli beirut. The Sight And Sound of continuing israeli air beirut. The Sight And Sound of continuing israeli Air Strikes i continuing israeli Air Strikes has been a feature of the lebanese capital today. I want to show you live pictures. This is Martis Square In Beirut. This is an area where many of the people who left Last Night after the first attack but also after the first attack but also after the first attack but also after the idf issued warning messages telling people to leave certain areas. Many of them fled to this part of beirut and were sleeping in the square there that you can see on the right along the corniche, the Seafront Area as well. Those strikes have continued throughout the day. Here In Beirut and in other parts of lebanon as well. Of course, the story has continued to develop. We have had a reaction from different countries around the Middle East, the announcement of several days of mourning in place in places like iraq and of course in iran as well. I spoke earlier to israels former president who has been reacting to this throughout the day to day. For israel, this was a significant operation. Hassan nasrallah is a key target that they have been trying to eliminate, in their words, for many years now. The Prime Minister the former Prime Minister the former Prime Minister the former Prime Minister was Prime Minister back in 2006, and i asked him about the latest developments over the last few hours. I dont think we need to go with a Ground Operation in lebanon. Hezbollah has suffered a major blow, Notjust Yesterday but all throughout the last two weeks and if they will continue fighting, they leave us with no option but to continue bombing and destroying their bases and ground positions, their rockets and launchers and many people will be suffering for weeks, regrettably. This is not our purpose or desire. They certainly have a good reason to want to stop. And we dont have any interest in a Ground Operation inside lebanon because what we want to do is provide security for our residents so they will come back home. Which i think it is something that the americans and french are now trying to accomplish. They are trying to negotiate between us and the lebanese government. I hope they are successful and i hope that hezbollah will not be seduced by their emotions to try and retaliate because any further Military Confrontation will be. If i may, sorry to interrupt. It is important when we talk about that ceasefire, Mr Netanyahu who is not warmly welcomed the suggestion Mr Netanyahu has not warmly welcomed the suggestion of a ceasefire. He addressed the un general assembly yesterday, he talked about peace and said that israel wants Peace And Peace is something that you pursued after the 2006 war. He says israel wants peace and then 90 minutes later launched this huge strike in the suburbs of Southern Beirut on residential buildings, civilian buildings. They would have been children killed there. There would have been children killed there. That is not the pursuit of peace, he is saying one thing and doing another. You insist on ignoring the effects on the ground. When netanyahu was speaking they were shooting 150 rockets across the state of israel in continuation of what they were doing for a year long operation now against us. The question is not whether we should argue about the precise effects that took place yesterday, and i hope that netanyahu is on his way back and may have cooled down a little bit. And those of us who need to do the only thing which is reasonable and responsible for the lives of people and to avoid unnecessary victims. They have to stop the shooting, they have to agree to a compromise that will bring security to the North Part of israel and allow us to bring back the people living there. And they will abide by the resolution. That is correct that hezbollah have to agree to the ceasefire, but Mr Netanyahu has to agree to the ceasefire, there is no indication that he is going to do that. In the pursuit of this, you will have seen yourself, the images of that Damage And Destruction yesterday, is it reasonable to target civilians like that, even if you are trying to get the leader of hezbollah . Do you consider civilian deaths acceptable Collateral Damage . Civilians were not targeted, im sorry. Im not a supporter of the israeli government. There were civilian deaths. Please, be patient. We were attacking the bases of hezbollah, all that section of beirut was a base of hezbollah, this is where they were shooting rockets and attacking every part of the state of israel. You go to the North Part of the state of israel you will see townships that are completely destroyed because of attacks coming from that area. There was no other way of stopping it but by attacking that which is the base from where they were out making these attacks against israeli civilians for such a long time. I absolutely, i regret every single citizen who is not involved who became a victim of this unavoidable and inevitable Counter Offensive that israel had to take in order to stop the fighting of hamas. But the question is are we going to fight about what happens tomorrow or are we going to make an effort to prevent it . What i say is this, stop fighting, Stop Shooting Rockets against israel. The former israeli Prime Minister, Ehud 0lmert speaking earlier. Now, as we were saying earlier, those israeli Air Strikes have continued through the day, particularly here in the capital of beirut around the Southern Suburbs of the city. Again, the sight of so make rising ever beirut has been seen through the day, the sounds of those strikes have really been very, very obvious on the skyline here. And those people who have left the Southern Suburbs, who fled Last Night after the first attack and who have spent the day on the streets, many of them have not returned because of the Continuation And Frequency of those israeli strikes. And we have of course seen families leave, and many of those affected are children full stop and we heard earlierfrom unicef s Deputy Representative here in lebanon. Indeed, were finding an increasing number of unaccompanied and separated children who one particular child at Unicef Team has identified yesterday has lost 15 members of one family. And were desperately looking for relatives that can, that can that can take care of her While Weve put her in an emergency alternative care. Um, but today people need absolutely everything from Drinking Water to mattresses, blankets. Um, were mobilizing teams to provide psychosocial first aid. Um, there are over 500 shelters now across over 700 shelters across lebanon. Um, over 100 of those are In Beirut. But theres more opening every hour. More than 100,000 people are seeking safety in these shelters. And really, the resources are running out by the minute. We just cannot keep up with the level of need. The hospitals have been inundated with those who have been injured. And who are themselves very traumatised. The Health Workers and Front Line workers. But were flying in emergency medical supplies. Weve flown in 100 metric tonnes last week and are trying to fly in more this week, but it is very difficult to find those aircraft to to come in and deliver the goods. But were doing what we can with what we have on the ground. But time is really of the essence, given the magnitude of the crisis and the level of injuries that were dealing with in Health Facilities and trying just to get clean Drinking Water to people to survive. You mentioned that people are sleeping in their cars, but in fact, theyre on the sides of streets. Theyre on the beach Last Night. People are under taking shelter under bridges. So its a really, really catastrophic situation here In Beirut this morning. And we can still see where the bombings have taken place all throughout the night and have continued this morning. That was eddie higgins, unicef s Deputy Representative in lebanon talking about the situation for children particularly in those areas of beirut that were targeted by those israeli Air Strikes Last Night and again this morning. You are alive with bbc news, im Anna Foster here In Beirut coming bringing you special coverage of this developing story, the killing of the leader of the lebanese armed group hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, he had been the leader of that organisation for over 30 years. Figureheads of the group, one of the people around at its inception, and the impact of his death will be felt very widely across the Middle East but also around the world as well. Im just saying a new statement from the us president Joe Biden, so let me tell you his response to what has happened. He says our aim is to de escalate ongoing conflicts through diplomatic means, i directed the Defence Secretary to further enhance the Defence Posture in the Middle East, to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a broader Regional War. He goes on to say, the united states fully supports israels right to defend itself against hezbollah, hamas, the houthis and any other uranian supported terrorist groups, it is a Measure Ofjustice Terrorist groups, it is a measure of justice for as terrorist groups, it is a Measure Ofjustice for as many victims, including thousands of americans, israelis and lebanese citizens. That is a statement from the us president Joe Biden, interesting within that that he said there that the us is going to further enhance their Defence Posture, bring more forces essentially here to the middle East Region to deter aggression and reduce risk of a broader Regional War because that is something that is a real concern now, how the response to a Hassan Nasrallahs death might be calculated notjust by calculated not just by hezbollah calculated notjust by hezbollah here in lebanon, but of course by their other associated iranian backed groups as well across the region, iran itself of course, but also the iranian backed Militia Groups that you have in iran, and also iraq and syria, and of course the houthis in yemen as well. So there is a lot of discussion, a lot of calculation going on and that is why people will be watching the situation very carefully over the next few hours and days to see what kind of response there will be. What are we also seeing is a response here on the streets In Beirut, as you might expect, and in lebanon because Hassan Nasrallah was, for many people here, a hero for hezbollah supporters, a charismatic Figure Head of the group and there has been a real emotions seen on the streets of beirut today. While you know, that News Spread early, you saw people crying in the streets and we saw a really emotional reaction from some people and i think thats really summed up, if you look at the contrast between that reaction and what the us president Joe Biden was saying a few minutes ago to some a hero, to others a real figure who had been responsible for orchestrating Terror Attacks over a number of years. It has been a fast moving day of developments here in the Middle East and our senior international Correspondent 0rley Garin has been following. By by day, confirmation from. That Hassan Nasrallah had been killed. It was a devastating loss. Israel gave this account of killing his old enemy. Hassan nasrallah, the leader of the Terrorist Arm of his brother, was killed by Israel Defense forces in a precise strike In Beirut Last Night while he was in a hezbollahs central headquarters commanding more imminent attacks against the people of israel. Its the people of israel. Its eole the people of israel. Its peeple here the people of israel. Its people here who the people of israel. Its people here who are fleeing today, some heading to the north or the east, clinging to the hope that theyll find safety. Even as ambulances russian for more wounded. We travel to. What do you think is the israeli plan here, what is the israeli plan here, what are they trying to do . I is the israeli plan here, what are they trying to do . Are they trying to do . I dont know but are they trying to do . I dont know but israel are they trying to do . I dont know but israel wants are they trying to do . I dont know but israel wants to are they trying to do . I dont know but israel wants to kill| know but israel wants to kill and to kill and to kill. You cannot and to kill and to kill. You can in the last few minutes, had in the last few minutes, let me tell you again with the us president Joe Biden had to say because his response obviously is a very significant one. He said, ouraim is to de escalate ongoing confluence conflicts in israel and lebanon. Middle East Region two did her aggression and reduce risk of a broader Regional War. Joe biden goes on to say the united states fully supports israels right to defend itself against hezbollah, hamas, houthis, and any other uranian supported terrorist groups and he closes by saying Nasrallahs Death from an israeli Air Strike is a Measure Ofjustice for his many victims, including americans, israelis, and lebanese citizens. Its worth pointing out the ability destroyed and that struck about 21t hours ago the work been going on throughout the day today, searching for survivors but also searching for bodies as well and there were civilian deaths in that area as well because while it is a Hezbollah Stronghold area it is also an area where families and children live and go about their day to day lives. It is a densely populated area as well. SoJoe Bidens response a significant one in the us obviously israels strongest and most significant military and most significant military and diplomatic partner. So his response while we waited a few hours for because of course the death of Hassan Nasrallah was confirmed several hours ago now, but is the first western response that we had to it from western governments. I want to bring in Ronnie Chapter now. Lets speak to ronnie chatah, host of the Beirut Banyan Podcast which discusses modern lebanese history. He is also the son of lebanons formerfinance minister, mohammed chatah, who was assassinated in 2013. So you obviously will always watch developments like this In Beirut with a keen eye, but also a sense of how emotional moments like this can be. Ill moments like this can be. Ill make it very moments like this can be. I ll make it very personal with your coverage in martyrs square, Thatis Coverage in martyrs square, that is where my father is buried. And surrounding his tomb are other lebanese politicians and intelligence official, right next to him was the former Prime Minister of how dd, in the same plaza and surrounded by displaced lebanese who are perhaps ironically fleeing the group that killed these politicians, the consequences of that groups actions until today from october eight. This is a war that no lebanese voted for, and weve been paying the price. The sounds of echoes are very familiar tojuly price. The sounds of echoes are very familiar to july and August 2006 very familiar tojuly and August 2006 when Hezbollah And Israel went to work as well, its too much work, its the same generation of lebanese witnessing the very delicate and extremely uncertain time in our countrys history, and the course, its emotionalfor our countrys history, and the course, its emotional for many reasons, notjust my Fathers Assassination im seeing the lebanese spirit died, im seeing lebanon i grew up, post Civil War In Lebanon becoming entirely unrecognisable. Displaced lebanese and the hundreds of thousands have no reason to flee their homes. Pay the price for the ongoing israeli conflict in that conflict has been based in lebanon for too long and we me is actually a newsprint from the first day of The Civil War when the plo and lebanese militia battled it out which turned into a 15 year civil war that my Parents Generation had to deal with as well. The genes and aspirations of post civil War Recovery and in particular Host Civilian Occupation governments, that last attempt to get things right was destroyed by Hassan Nasrallah. Im not going to give credit for what the israelis are doing on the contrary, and he missile that hits lebanon injures lebanese. Whether you support or oppose hezbollah, but the truth is at the end of the income of this is a group that the average lebanese couldnt do anything about, this is a group that parliamentarians could do nothing about, this is a Group Diplomacy could not disarm. And now youre looking at the failure of diplomacy and the consequences of war. I want to ust the consequences of war. I want to just take the consequences of war. I want to just take a the consequences of war. I want to just take a moment the consequences of war. I want to just take a moment to to just take a moment to explore what this means for lebanon because as you know, as you regularly discuss on the podcast, the fabric of lebanese social and lebanese political society is multilayered and complex, the last time we had elections here there was a real i think deep rooted feeling that the people wanted change in lebanon but that isnt always reflected in the votes and youve got a Caretaker Government, no president , and how is this latest development likely to change life for people here in lebanon . We have a government people here in lebanon . We have a government that people here in lebanon . We have a government that is people here in lebanon . We have a government that is paralysed. L a government that is paralysed. We have a state with failed institutions, we have a caretaker Prime Minister and a Foreign Minister that has not really delivered lebanons Interests Bus and im being dogmatic here. We also have an economic crisis still under way. We have the aftermath of the largest nonnuclear blast in modern history, the Port Blast on august four, 2020. We also have the long term effects of what political paralysis can do to his society. Lebanese stopped believing in the state. Hezbollahs capabilities were not just security oriented Hezbollahs Capabilities were notjust security oriented but Hijacking Government almost to its entirety. Theres no president in lebanon right now, as a direct consequence of what has been a cosmic influence can do and government. There is a Fledgling State that is trying at best to handle an emergency but you see how it happened, its last minute, its a bit robotic and its public schools that are housing displaced lebanese, those that are on the streets, but at the end of the day its the state thats unable to do more. Civil society is whats doing all the Hard Work and is notjust In Beirut, across the country. And my building alone, there are plenty of families that are displaced from this war now but living in my building, there are tenants that opened their own private homes to house the displaced. This is something that we will do whether we support or oppose hezbollah, these are lebanese civilians fleeing war. The consequences to this country are permanent. Youre looking at a country 51t years since its borders were opened to external war, and right now unfortunately even why we are talking, the israelis are actually going after Hassan Nasrallahs replacement, i think it was announced minutes ago. We are a battlefield, we are not a Country And Post civil War Recovery, we are permanent battlefield. The dreams and aspirations of many lebanese politicians that died, they were killed by Hassan Nasrallah was to end this scenario once and for all. And the dreams of Neutralising Lebanon from regional conflict are at best, best expressed in a un Security Council Resolution that we talk in day and tie out, 1701. That resolution is meant to help the lebanese state when needed, bolster support and monitoring all our borders, whether its the south alongside israel or the south alongside israel or the East And North alongside cereal. Syria. Not have Weapons Flow in either Direction Orfor Weapons Flow in either direction or for that matter not host a substate Paramilitary Force that can help support the regime, is lebanese fighters paying the price for doing that and at the end of the Day Hezbollah is a lebanese group, and i hope for the future of this country lebanese remember that that this is a lebanese group that has been hijacked and actually probably abandoned by force at the moment, abandoned by iran. And its very, very extreme to see iran unable to do anything in preserving its crownjewel. Lebanon has hosted this group for over four decades and it grew, it grew in importance and Significance Notjust to iran for the region, its a runs Security Leverage and the whole region, were watching you get hit very hard, its entire commanders, all of them are killed, its Secretary General is dead buried beneath the rubble and beirut, and its entire capabilities as communications capabilities ten days ago exploded. You have over 1500 hezbollah members with Maimed Arms and they are blind as a consequence to that major attack. Blind as a consequence to that majorattack. I blind as a consequence to that major attack. I dont think hezbollah can handle more. Its not a group that was designed for prolonged conflict with israel and is not a group designed for what is happening to 0rinda, and i hope lebanese remember that your recent history and i really hope the lebanese find it somewhere in their hearts to remember that this is a cause that was hijacked by an external regime and All Of Us whether christian, muslim, sunni, armenian, it doesnt matter. All of us have paid an ultimate price for hosting this problem, it has to end once and for all, and if i may add one more thing, im sorry for taking a lot of your time here. This is a conflict that the lebanese cannot handle on their own. We need international support to make sure the Lebanese Army in its current capability can actually recover all of its lost geography and we need international support and a regional understanding that this country has to be neutralised from Regional War. We need help, if we dont get that help you may see this actual last 21t hours turn for the worst. Where lebanon emerges as a failed state and i hope thats not our finale. Thank you forjoining us, i really appreciate your thoughts, thank you forjoining us here on bbc news. I want to bring you what Lebanons Caretaker Prime Minister, we were reflecting there since the elections back in 2022, Lebanon Hasnt had a proper government, a Caretaker Government and a caretaker Prime Minister, and mccarty is addressing the un National Assembly in new york. We reaffirm, he said, our commitment to international legitimacy in international law, we demand a Cease Fire and the implementation of resolution 1701 as we continue to fulfil her duties, he again has emphasised the necessity of electing a president during this difficult time and underscoring the role of the army and scaredy forces in protecting the nation. He said i apologise for any shortcomings that may have occurred after the scale of displacement that weve been talking about him and notjust of the last 21t hours but over the last week, exceeded all expectations. He says will take decisions and measures to welcome our people while the state remains the protector of its citizens and their guarantor. So that is the latest from Lebanons Caretaker Prime Minister speaking at the un. And through the next few hours and the next couple of days we will continue no doubt to get more of this reaction because this is a key development and a pivotal moment here in the Middle East and i think really theres a sense here In Beirut but across lebanon and the wider Middle East this evening that it is incredibly difficult to predict what the next step will be in what the next step will be in what is a growing and escalating crisis, but needless to say, we will of course keep you updated today with all the developments on bbc news, so stay with us. The new leader of the Ulster Unionists has been ratified at The Partys annual conference. Mike nesbitt addressed party members by livestream as he is recovering from covid. Hes taking up the reins of Northern Irelands fourth largest party for the second time while also serving as Health Minister in the stormont assembly. He outlined his vision for The Party to the conference audience. The days when unionism could rely on its traditional Voter Base for success, are long gone and are not coming back. So we need to do more than wrap ourselves in the Union Flag and sing god save the king. If you want to know our constitutional preference, the clues in the title were the ulster unionist party. But visit any School Or University or Community Group and your elected representatives do this daily. The questions people want to ask are not about sovereignty. They want to know about Mental Health and wellbeing. They want to know about the environment and climate change. They want to know about what were doing, to give them a reason not to go live somewhere else, because they feel there are no opportunities for them here. So we need to be more than a party dedicated to Northern Ireland remaining part of the united kingdom. We need to be a party of policies. People call us moderate. People call us liberal. People call us progressive. What i call us is The Party of Common Sense. So where Common Sense dictates a course of action, i will support it, because that should strengthen our position in the united kingdom. And for the avoidance of doubt, that includes sensible, practical Co Operation with the republic of ireland. Mike nesbitt, the leader of the ulster unionist party addressing his colleagues at their conference. Now its time for a look at Todays Sport with jane. Seven Premier League matches on saturday and a bit of a surprise with defending champions Manchester City being held to a second consecutive draw with their match against newcastle ending 1 1 at st jamess park. Having dropped their first points of the season at home to arsenal in a 2 2 draw last week, city once again took the lead with a neat finish from josko gvardiol. Before Anthony Gordon got His Newcastle Side A point from the Penalty Spot after drawing a foul from citys ederson. Newcastle are still unbeaten at home since january, and despite dropping points, city manager, Pep Guardiola was happy with his sides performance. We scored a fantastic goal, in that moment chances especially. They are a team that create chances, but of course we had it. After they scored, ten minutes we suffered. With the crowd and everything. We know how happy they will celebrate the point, all of them, the crowd. But the last minutes, we were there again. I recognise my team, the Body Language and the way we behaved and the way we played. Smiles from the Arsenal Manager Mikel arteta after a significant win over leicester, putting them level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table. They had to work hard for it. Losing a 2 0 lead in the second half with leicester rallying to draw level. However, Arsenals Stamina proved to be the difference as Leandro Trossard poked home to take them ahead and then Kai Havertz sealed the victory with a fourth. Leicesters wait for a first Premier League win of the season goes on. How we handled the situation because obviously in the back of our minds about issues that should have been many more, and all of a sudden you have to delay against a very good team with very difficult circumstances but i think we stayed really composed, you know, we had a lot of clarity and understanding what we had to do and we kept doing what we had to do and we earned the right to win it. Elsewhere in the Premier League brentford drew 1 1 with west ham. Chelsea were Lt 2 winners over Brighton Cole Palmer scoring all four of their goals. Everton got their first win of the season with a 2 1 victory over Crystal Palace at goodison. Fulham beat Nottingham Forest 1 0. Liverpool are currently in action away to wolves after 23 minutes it still 0 0. The final match in the Championship'>Rugby Championship is under way in South Africa with the springboks in action against argentina. Pre kick off, both teams were able to win the competition. However a first Half Bonus Point performance from the boka, with two tries for aphele fassi, means that regardless of the result it will be South Africa lifting the Championship'>Rugby Championship. 41 pints to seven the latest Score Well into the second half. Meanwhile in the early game, Caleb Clarke scored two tries as New Zealand beat the wallabies 33 13 to end their Championship with a third win. More on all of the stories on the Bbc Sport website, but thats it for now. Some Breaking News to bring you now, we are hearing that the mp Rosie Duffield is saying shes quitting the labour party, because of sir keir starmer s cruel policies and hypocrisy over his acceptance of gifts, but the determination by The Party to continue with the scrapping of the Winter Fuel Payment for pensioners. And turning our attention back to what is happening in lebanon, we are hearing from the us State Department that the united states is now ordering it will not s families to leave lebanon because weve seen a great many Air Strikes still continuing throughout the day following that large bombardment overnight on friday in which the hezbollah later Hassan Nasrallah was killed. Israel continuing to carry out Air Strikes in those neighbourhoods of South Beirut which are the stronghold of the hezbollah movement. All of our coverage continues throughout the evening here on bbc news, ill be handing over in a moment to my colleague and we also have further coverage from Anna Foster and beirut. Hello there. Were seeing a very much needed drier, sunnier spell of weather across the country this weekend. Although its not going to be the same as we move through sunday. Today, by far the best of the drier and brighter weather. Sunday it starts dry, but then well see wet and windy weather pushing into southern and western areas later on, as a new area of low pressure moves in. So this is the Rainfall Accumulations as we move through sunday into tuesday. Looks like england and wales again bearing the brunt of The Rainfall, which is Bad News here. Ground is saturated and thats going to exacerbate already existing flooding issues. This area of High Pressure, though, is whats brought us the fine and largely dry weather through today. And its going to continue. Probably the best of the sunshine later in the day will be towards the midlands, southern and eastern england. Elsewhere, a bit more cloud further North And West with a few showers. Most of The Rain For Northern Scotland and it is a chilly day after that cold start 11 to m or 15 degrees. As we head through tonight, it stays dry for most. Most of the showers fizzle out and well see clear spells, and when we have the clearskies, central, northern and eastern parts with light winds, its going to turn quite chilly once again, with a bit of Mist And Fog developing, but temperatures slowly recovering out west. Thats because weve got this new area of low pressure working its way in to bring increasing breeze from the south. 0urarea of High Pressure, short lived and starts to ebb away into the near continent. It does mean sunday starts off fine. There will be some early sunshine around, but it will fade. Probably the best of the sunshine through the day for the northern half of scotland, where it will be warmest. Turning cloudier, windier and wetter the further South And West that you are, as this area of low pressure moves in. Weve got a couple of yellow warnings in force for rain and for wind here. Temperature wise, mid teens again in the south, low to mid teens further north. Sunday night we see the wind and The Rain increasing across england and wales, certainly towards the south and the west. Some of that rain could be heavy and, like i mentioned, could exacerbate flooding issues. As that area of low pressure crosses the country into monday, it will become very slow moving. There is a bit of a Question Mark to the North And South extent of The Rain. At the moment it looks like its east anglia, the north midlands, Northern England up into southern scotland, which could see some of the heaviest rainfall. Again, that could cause issues across england and wales. Sunshine and showers to the south, could be quite mild, 17 18 degrees here. The rain eventually clears away gradually on tuesday, and then wednesday onwards, High Pressure builds in so it should turn fine and settled. All throughout the night and have continued this morning. Live from london, this is bbc news. Im karin giannone. With continuing coverage following the killing of Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah by an israeli Air Strike in the lebanese capital beirut. Israel said his death had made the world a safer place. Lets cross live to my colleague Anna Foster who is In Beirut. Good evening. Good evening. There has good evening. Good evening. There has been good evening. Good evening. There has been a good evening. Good evening. There has been a lot good evening. Good evening. There has been a lot of there has been a lot of reaction, as you would expect, if the last few hours since we got come in the early afternoon in lebanon, the confirmation from hess itself that Hassan Nasrallah had been killed in what was a huge Air Strike Last Night here in the lebanese capital. We saw and heard the plume of smoke, we heard the repeated loud blast echoing across all the buildings you can see around me. We needed to mate over 12 hours for the confirmation we needed to wait over 12 hours for the confirmation. It was more a matter of waiting for hezbollah itself to make the confirmation before it became a 100 guaranteed report. It is a pivotal Moment Notjust for the conflict but for the wider Middle East, the repercussions of what has happened here will have an impact notjust
