Welcome to bbc News Broadcasting to viewers Around The World. And we start in the Middle East where fears of an all out regional conflict are growing. Lebanese officials say more than 490 people have been killed, including 35 children, and at least 16 Hundred others injured in israeli strikes on the south of the country. The Israel Defense forces say theyve hit 800 positions held by the iranian backed group hezbollah. It says its fired dozens of rockets at israel. The Cross Border strikes have intensified after a series of exploding Device Attacks on hezbollah members were blamed on israel. Ourfirst report come from our senior international correspondent, Orla Guerin whos in beirut. Explosion. Southern lebanon awoke to this. It looks like all out war. The israeli army says it hit 1,300 hezbollah sites today. There were Gaza Style warnings, telling residents to go, including from the israeli leader. Now, starting this morning the idf has warned you to get out of Harms Way. I urge you, take this warning seriously. Dont let hezbollah endanger your lives and the lives of your loved ones. Dont let hezbollah endanger lebanon. Please get out of Harms Way now. But where to find safety in the middle of all this . Explosion. Screaming. For one man, too late. My siblings and their children were all killed here, he says. The israeli army insists its Air Strikes are destroying weapons, some hidden in homes, and it accuses hezbollah of using civilians as human shields. On the roads from the south, a mass exodus. So many heading to beirut that the motorway became a one way system. Ahmed says everyone fled his village because of Air Strikes and destruction. Theres no one left, he says, we took our belongings and went. So many new homeless now in this expanding war. In beirut, too, fear on the streets and a rush to get home. Are you feeling afraid . Sure, mohammed tells me. Im afraid for myself, my wife and my five children. I dont know what to do. How long will we be living through this . We cant keep going. Parents were summoned to schools to pick up their children early. There were threats by phone, he says, that theyll hit beirut. Some in the capital have been getting recorded messages telling them to go, including staff at lebanons information ministry. For months, there have been fears of a wider war. Now the waiting is over its here. Israels escalation is a huge risk, and notjust for lebanon, but for the entire Middle East. Orla guerin, bbc news, beirut. In northern israel, people are living with the daily threat of Rocket Attacks by hezbollah. Our correspondent Paul Adams is in northern israel, where evacuees from further north have been housed for almost a year. The jagged remains of a hezbollah rocket. Nothing that happened in Israel Today remotely compares with events across the border, but hezbollah is hitting back. David had seconds to get his family into the Safe Room before the rocket came through his roof. The local rabbi comes to offer support. Israel, david says, did not want this war. We dont have a war with them. They start with no reason. So now we are giving back. And it will, in The End, it will be ok. Do you feel lucky today . Yes, very lucky. Israels Defence Minister has called on the public to show composure and discipline, and listen to the instructions issued by the local authorities. Its only because the family who live here did precisely that that no one was hurt. Air raid sirens. Across northern israel, sirens wailed and rockets fell. Plenty of near misses. Explosion. The government says its determined to Restore Normal Life here to allow displaced civilians to return to their homes. But thats not going to happen while hezbollah is still firing rockets deep into israel. Hezbollah, on the 8th of october, started firing at israeli civilians in the northern border, and has been doing this for over 11 months, with 9000 rockets. And 60,000 israelis have left their homes. We have to act. People were evacuated to this kibbutz a year ago, leaving vulnerable homes along the border. Its supposed to be safer, but today they were taking cover. So thats the second Alarm Weve had since we got here, what, just about an hour ago. Again we can hear interceptions overhead, and i look at the app here i can see there are alerts all the place. This area remains in the firing line. If hezbollah chooses to escalate it could soon be the whole country. Paul adams, bbc news, northern israel. 0ur international editor Jeremy Bowen is injersualem. He explains what each side thinks they can get out of this escalation. Its a really dangerous moment. From hezbollah s point of view, they want to keep on fighting, fighting israel is in their dna, it is why they exist. And while theirfight with israel goes back to the 1980s, this, as you have been hearing, goes back to the day after hamas attacked israel. The israelis have been pushing harder in recent months, escalating steadily. But in the last week, as we have been seeing, it has been going much, much harder and faster. And while they have inflicted some grievous blows on their enemies in lebanon, the Hezbollah Infrastructure is much bigger than that. If you look at gaza, after nearly one year, israel still hasnt managed, for example, to destroy all the hamas tunnels that have been built through sand. In lebanon they are built through rock. And the south is a much bigger area than gaza. Israel effectively is gambling. What it is hoping is that by doing what it is doing, it will coerce hezbollah into stopping firing into israel. I think that is probably unlikely and means israel have to continue escalating. They have already said this is going into a new phase and the ultimate escalation would be moving troops and tanks into lebanon. That might be difficult, particularly since their forces, after a year of fighting in gaza and a lot of violence in the West Bank as well, are tired. And at the moment as well they need to mobilise more reserves to get to that point. But lets be very clear about this, this is a very dangerous moment, and right now it is all going in one direction. Brian katulis is Senior Fellow for us Foreign Policy at the Middle East institute. He told me israel seems to be just getting started on its assault on lebanon. It looks like theyre taking the first steps in what may be a more concerted campaign that could involve some ground troops, but most likely will be continued Air Assaults over the next few days that target hezbollah s infrastructure and its Command And Control capabilities. Where this all goes, anyone knows. Because it really depends on how some of hezbollah s partners and supporters, like iran, might react to this moment. Um, i think hassan nasrallah, the head of hezbollah, hinted that there could be some retaliation in the form of the types of terror attacks that hezbollah is quite capable of doing, notjust in the region, but Around The World. Well, lebanons Prime Minister says israels Actions Amount to a war of extermination. Are he and the lebanese people more broadly powerless here . How separate are they from hezbollah . Well, lebanon is a very divided country these days. Its been so for years. And there are many people who dont like hezbollah. But most lebanese also dont like seeing their country being bombed, um, by their neighbour, israel. So, uh, the costs of civilian casualties, if they rise, will, i think, lead to some sort of effect where people who dont even like hezbollah and dont like what they do, lebanese, make question more where this is all going and what are the costs . Everybody wants to avoid the scenario that played out in 2006, when there was an extended conflict. It was quite costly for lebanon overall. I think well see what happens if israel is successful in targeting some of hezbollahs, hezbollah s leaders. I think its hard to imagine that hezbollah itself will be fully disentangled from lebanon, because its been there for years. And what does israel determine as success . We know Israels Defence minister is saying that the strikes will continue until we achieve our goals to return the residents of the north safely to their homes. Thats one definition. I think another Thing Israel has in mind is trying to restore a sense of strategic deterrence, not only with hezbollah, but with a number of different groups that have targeted israel since october 7th, October 8th of last year. Now, the problem is, is that a lot of these groups arent full fledged government governments. Theyre not. They re more like militias. Some are terror groups. So its actually hard to restore strategic deterrence against groups that are essentially fighting a War Of Attrition through missiles, drones, and trying to actually keep israel under siege on multiple fronts. And thats i think the challenge here israel needs to watch carefully is whether they get stretched too thin by trying to respond to so many provocations and so many attacks from across many sides of its border. The unga is currently getting under way in new york. Do you think the International Community can do more, should do more . The us, for one, is says its trying to de escalate tensions, but it doesnt seem like anything is holding israel back. No, not at all. I mean, i think the united states looks like a Deer In The Headlights. Israel launched its attacks on the beepers and two way radios last week, while secretary of State Antony Blinken was in the region. And it looks like a Deer In The Headlights for the united states. As for the so called International Community, i used to think that that actually existed. But after years of watching the inaction from russia, china, so many others on the atrocities in syria, i wouldnt put a lot of hopes on this years Un General Assembly finding some sort of pathway to resolving this. I think ultimately its the balance of forces on the ground and whether this idea that israel has that it wants to restore deterrence. Its the balance of forces of what hezbollah and some of its backers think it can get away with that will determine whether or not this actually spirals further out of control. The luxury british store, harrods has launched an internal review into whether current staff were involved in any of the allegations relating to the former owner, mohamed Al Fayed, who is accused of multiple rapes and sexual assaults by several women who worked for him. It comes as one former employee tells the bbc that a manager failed to investigate her complaints of inappropriate behaviour saying that person is still working at harrods. Al fayed died last year. Shes been talking to our correspondent ellie price. I feel pretty sick about it. Its really sickening to think of my situation and to think of other girls. Jessica was just 22 when she briefly worked at harrods in 2008. Thats not her real name, and this is the first time shes spoken about her experience. She says, like other young women, she was cherry picked for mohamed Al Fayed by another female employee. When i look back at it, i feel like she was acting as his pimp. It wasnt clear to me at that time. She was just a figure i looked up to as one of the senior management. But now i reflect back on it, it is quite clear to see, you know, the actions that happened to put me in front of him came directly from her. Jessica says Al Fayed sexually assaulted her. When she went to an Hr Meeting to complain and hand in her notice, she felt too intimidated to detail what he had done. But she says she did complain about his inappropriate behaviour more generally, how he gave her large sums of money. She says she was left in no doubt that people in that meeting knew there was a sexual element to her complaint. One of those people still works at harrods. I feel quite strongly that the people that facilitated it happening also need to be brought to justice. And that is part of the reason why i am now speaking out about it. Those people, you know, i can see are still working either within the company or in other companies, and i have no doubt they have to have been fully aware of what was happening. Harrods has been under new ownership since 2010, and insists it is seeking to right the wrongs of the past chairman. In a statement tonight, the company said we are utterly appalled by the allegations of abuse perpetrated by mohamed Al Fayed. We condemn them in the strongest terms. As part of our due diligence, there is an ongoing internal review, supported by external counsel, including looking at whether any current staff were involved in any of the allegations, either directly or indirectly. Harrods is also in direct communication with the metropolitan police to ensure we are offering our assistance with any of their relevant inquiries. Mohamed Al Fayed died last year aged 94, but for many of his victims, their quest for justice is not over. Ellie price, bbc news. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Prosecutors in america, say the suspected gunman arrested near Donald Trumps Golf Course 8 days ago, wrote a letter months earlier saying he planned to assassinate the former president. They allege Ryan Routh S Note was addressed dear world, and was placed in a box containing ammunition and dropped at the home of an unidentified person whos now come forward several month before his apparent attempt to shoot mrtrump in florida. 0ur North America editor sarah smith, whos in washington, has been telling us more about this letter. Well in it Ryan Routh confirmed that he was trying to kill the former president , but he also seemed to anticipate that he wouldnt succeed. It was addressed to dear world, and in it he said this was an Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump, but i failed you. I tried my best and summoned all the gumption i could muster, he said. And then he went on to say, its now up to you to finish the job. And he offered 150,000. He said, to anyone who could complete thejob. And we learned a bit more as well about how Ryan Routh had been basically stalking Donald Trump for about a month before this incident. His Cell Phone was detected at several times near both the Golf Course and Donald Trumps mar a Lago Residence in florida. And on the day itself, when he was arrested, he had been lying in wait in the bushes on the edge of Donald Trumps Golf Course for up to 12 hours before he was spotted by the secret service, and the prosecutors said that he had a clear Line Of Fire at the sixth hole on the Golf Course. Donald trump was only about 12 to 15 minutes away from playing that hole. He had a clear Line Of Fire and it would have been, the prosecutors said, an easy shot where Ryan Ruth is now going to be detained in custody until a trial. The head of the firm behind the submersible which imploded while diving to the Titanic Shipwreck Last Year declared that no one was dying on his watch after hearing Safety Concerns about the vessel. Stockton rush s comments emerged in documents released to the inquiry into the accident, in which he died along with four others. Its now been revealed the implosion left debris strewn for hundreds of metres across the sea floor. 0ur science editor, Rebecca Morelle has the story. At the bottom of The Atlantic ocean, new footage of the remains of 0ceangate s Titan Sub, its front dome secured by an underwater robot, ready to be pulled up to the surface. It took the Titan Sub about an hour and a half to make its descent. Its last known location was about 3,300 metres down thats about 500 metres above the sea floor. It was about 300 metres away from the bow of the wreck of the titanic. Its implosion created a large debris field, just under 300 metres long and 150 metres wide. The bits of wreckage are shown by these dots. The front dome was found here. Made from titanium, its still intact. Close by was a large part from the Back End of the sub. The hull s been destroyed and parts of the Tail Cone were thrown much further afield. Nothing but the truth. The us Coast Guard is trying to establish what went wrong. Last week, david lochridge, 0ceangate s former marine operations director, gave evidence. Hed compiled a report about his Safety Concerns and was summoned to a meeting with 0ceangate s ceo, Stockton Rush. A transcript of this meeting that took place in 2018 has now been released. David lochridge said i am addressing what i view as Safety Concerns, concerns i have mentioned verbally, which have been dismissed by everybody. A heated exchange follows, and Stockton Rush replied, i have no desire to die. Ive got a nice granddaughter. I am going to be around. He went on, i understand this kind of risk, and im going in to it with eyes open and i think this is one of the safest things i will ever do. And finally he said, im not dying. No one is dying under my watch, period. The us Coast Guard heard evidence from 0ceangate s former engineering director. He was asked whether the sub was examined after a Loud Bang was heard during a dive to the titanic in 2022. What we really wanted to do was bring the sub back and just look at the inside of the hull, to see if there were any cracks, and it was very frustrating because we had no way to work on it, no way to look at it, and we were told it was a cost issue. More witnesses will give evidence this week as the hearing continues. Rebecca morelle, bbc news. North korea have won the fifa under 20 womens World Cup, beating japan 1 0 in the final. But on monday, it was really 0xfordshire s turn to see some absolutely horrendous conditions, widespread flooding and some severe disruption. In South Newington in 0xfordshire, we recorded about 98mm through the day thats about a month and a Halfs Worth of rain. And you can see The Rain on the Radar Picture here. It is gradually easing, and over the next few hours, it will tend to become a lot lighter, a lot patchier, before becoming confined to East Anglia and south east england. So it is an improving very gradually kind of weather situation. Bit of rain coming into the far north of scotland. Thats a Cold Front that will be bringing some colder air with it, but these are the kind of temperatures youll have as you start off your tuesday morning. Tuesday, still some dribs and drabs of rain left over for East Anglia and south east england, but clearing away quite quickly. This area of more substantial rain moves southwards across scotland through the day. Thats our Cold Front. Much colder air spreading to the far north of scotland, where there will be a few afternoon showers. Temperatures just around 10 degrees in aberdeen. 10 as well for stornoway. Further southwards, were around 1a to 18 celsius. Now, the middle part of the week sees an area of low Pressure Move in off The Atlantic, bringing more heavy rain, particularly targeted on england and wales. 0nce thats cleared through, well, then we start to get some colder air moving right the way across the country. And so for wednesday, its kind of a day where we will see rain developing from the west, so turning wet across wales, southern and western areas of england through the day. Probably a fair amount of Dry Weatherfurther northwards with some sunshine, a few showers in the forecast for Northern Areas of scotland, but it will continue to get colder across those Northern Areas. And then as we head into Wednesday Night and thursday, The Rain continues to drive its way northwards and eastwards, covering most parts of england and wales with some heavy downpours. The colder air continues to flow in across scotland and northern ireland. So temperatures in belfast, 12. 13 for edinburgh average at this time of year is 17 degrees, so were quite a long way below average. And that colder air is going to move its way southwards across all parts of the country before The End of the week. The united states proposes a ban on chinese and russian technology on american roads. Plus, we speak to a victim of the largest It Outage in history, ahead of a Crowdstrike Hearing in the us. Hello and welcome to business today. Im steve lai. Lets begin in the united states, where the biden administration has proposed a ban on chinese and russian Hardware And Software in connected vehicles in america. The rule will apply to nearly all newer cars and trucks, which have the ability to connect to wi fi, Bluetooth Or Satellite systems. It will mark a significant escalation in us restrictions on chinese vehicles, software and components. The bbc s Ritika Gupta has more from new york. Modern day cars are increasingly computers on wheels, collecting data through sensors and cameras, and the us government has concluded they cant be trusted. Back in february, President Biden ordered an investigation into whether chinese vehicles posed a national security risk, resulting in the proposed ban. If enacted, it would focus on text that connects vehicles if enacted, it would focus on tech that connects vehicles
