And coming up on sportsday later in the hourt on Bbc News. A new era beckons for everton as an American Billionaire agrees a deal to become the new Majority Owner of the club. Good evening. In whats become the bloodiest day in lebanon, since hezbollah fired rockets into israel following last years October 7th attacks, the lebanese government says more than 270 people, including 21 children, have been killed in heavy israeli bombardments. The Israel Defense Force says it was targeting hundreds of hezbollah positions, while the iranian backed group, which is a proscribed terror organisation, says it fired dozens of rockets at israel. America says it is sending additional troops to the area. Orla guerin, is the in the lebanese Capital Beirut for us now. A massive bombardment began this morning at about 7am local time. Initially it was targets in Southern Lebanon that were being pounded, but by this Evening Israel was striking targets in the Bekaa Valley in the east. The idf is saying it has destroyed in one day what has taken hezbollah 20 years to build. It is notjust Hezbollah Hezbollah 20 years to build. It is not just hezbollah fighters hezbollah 20 years to build. It is notjust hezbollah fighters that hezbollah 20 years to build. It is not just hezbollah fighters that are caught up in all of this but also terrified lebanese civilians. The Prime Minister says it is a war of extermination. Within the past hour in beirut, theres another israeli Air Strike on the hezbollah stronghold. We understand that was targeting another senior hezbollah commander. We do not yet know if he has been killed. But the us tonight is sending more troops to the region. Southern lebanon awoke to this. It looks like all out war. The israeli army said it hit 800 sites linked to hezbollah. It issued Gaza Style warnings, telling residents to go, but they had little time to act. We asked residents of lebanese villages to pay attention to the Message And Warning published by the idf, and heed them. This is an Advance Warning for your own safety and the safety of yourfamily. But where to find safety in the middle of all this . And on the roads from the south, a mass exodus. Ahmed says everyone fled his village because of Air Strikes and destruction. Theres no one left, he says, we took our belongings and went. So many new homeless now in this expanding war. In beirut, too, fear on the streets and a rush to get home. Are you feeling afraid . Sure, mohammed tells me. Im afraid for myself, my wife and my five children. I dont know what to do. How long will we be living through this . We cant keep going. Parents were summoned to schools to pick up their children early. There were threats by phone, he says, that theyll hit beirut. Some in the capital have been getting recorded messages telling them to leave. That includes lebanons information ministry. For months, there have been fears of a wider war. Now the waiting is over its here. Israels escalation is a huge risk, and notjust for lebanon, but for the whole middle east. 0rla guerin, Bbc News, beirut. Lets go live to Paul Adams who is in northern israel, where it is difficult to get the latest information concerning the situation, but paul is with us. Just tell us, paul, how much of an escalation do you think it is, the events of today . This escalation do you think it is, the events of today . Escalation do you think it is, the events of today . This is a colossal escalation events of today . This is a colossal escalation. This events of today . This is a colossal escalation. This evening events of today . This is a colossal escalation. This evening the events of today . This is a colossal| escalation. This evening the prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed that statement you had from the israeli literary warning the people of lebanon to take this seriously, do not let hezbollah endanger your lives, get out of harms way now. Once our operation is finished, he 0nce our operation is finished, he said, you can come back safely to your homes. He has also warned israelis of complex days ahead. This is a risky venture. At the moment, there is no sign of hezbollah giving up the fight. I am speaking to you a little west of the sea of galilee. It is around 20 miles south of the lebanese border, well outside the area evacuated by Civilians Ii area evacuated by civilians 11 months ago. In fact, this is full of people who are sheltering from communities further north, but today we had volley after volley of rockets, sirens going off all the time, people being forced to go down into the air raid shelter. We could see the interceptions by Israels Iron Dome air defence system. This is the dilemma that israel faces, even as it ups the ante against hezbollah, it is encouraging or inciting hezbollah to attack further into israel. So far, no sign of those attacks diminishing. If anything, they are increasing. We are getting the sports this evening that the government has given the army the authority, if it chooses, to extend the emergency measures that already exist in the north to the whole of the country, which suggests that the government recognises that the danger of hezbollah striking even further into israel is very real. Israel is very real. Paul, thank you for that. Paul israel is very real. Paul, thank you for that. Paul adams israel is very real. Paul, thank you for that. Paul adams live israel is very real. Paul, thank you for that. Paul adams live in for that. Paul adams live in northern israel. There will be a full report from the region at ten. Harrods has said it has launched an internal review looking at whether any current staff were involved in any of the allegations relating to Mohamed Al fayed. It comes as a former employee, known asjessica, told Bbc News a managerfailed to investigate after she made allegations of Innappropriate Behaviour by Mohamed Al fayed. That manager still works at Bbc News. That manager still works at harrods. Ellie price reports. Jessica was just 22 when she briefly worked at harrods in 2008. Thats not her real name, and this is the first time shes spoken about her experience. She says, like other young women, she was cherry picked for Mohamed Al fayed by another female employee who, in her words, facilitated his now well documented Predatory Behaviour towards them. When i look back at it, ifeel like she was acting as his pent. It wasnt clear to me at that time acting as his pimp. She wasjust a figure i looked up to as one of the senior management. But now i reflect back on it, it is quite clear to see, you know, the actions that happened to put me in front of him came directly from her. Jessica says Al Fayed pushed her against a wall and sexually assaulted her. When she went to hr to complain and hand in her notice, she felt too intimidated to detail what had happened in the meeting. But she says she did complain about his inappropriate behaviour, including giving her large sums of money and asking for more one on one meetings with her. She says she was left in No Doubt the people in the meeting knew there was a sexual element to her complaint. Bbc news understands one of those people in the meeting still works for harrods. I feel quite strongly that the people that facilitated it happening also need to be brought tojustice. And that is part of the reason why i am now speaking out about it. Those people, you know, i can see are still working either within the company or in other companies, and i have No Doubt they have to have been fully aware of what was happening. Harrods has been under new ownership since 2010, and insists it is seeking to right the wrongs of the past chairman. In a statement tonight, the company said we are utterly appalled by the allegations of abuse perpetrated by Mohamed Al fayed. We condemn them in the strongest terms. As part of our due diligence, there is an ongoing internal review, supported by external counsel, including looking at whether any current staff were involved in any of the allegations, either directly or indirectly. Harrods is also in direct communication with the metropolitan police to ensure we are offering our assistance with any of their relevant inquiries. Mohamed Al Fayed died last year aged 94, but for many of his victims, their Quest Forjustice is not over. Ellie price, Bbc News. Daniel sandford is here. What do we know about what the met are actually doing . It is not clear to us what they plan to do. Im not sure at this stage it is even clear to them. Parrots have said that they are in touch with the police, and we know that more than 100 people have come forward, either to the lawyers or to the bbc making allegations. So, what can the police do . The allegations are all against a man who is dead. The police are still repeating today that they want victims to come forward, they are saying that if any new evidence comes to light they want to assess that. That is because crimes might have been committed not by Mohamed Al fayed. There can be people around him who might have been somehow helping him to commit these crimes, there may be people who are guilty therefore of Conspiracy Or Trafficking offences. That is why there is this open question at the moment about the police investigation. What will they do about it and are the actually actively going to start investigating people around Mohamed Al fayed . Investigating people around Mohamed Alfa ed . , ~ alfayed . Daniel, thank you. And revelations of how the boss of firm that ran the Ill Fated Titan Trip dismissed concerns over safety from his own staff. And on Bbc London the Football Pitch that looks coming up on sportday in the next 15 minutes on Bbc News glee for glamorgan as they beat somerset and the weather to become one day champions on a rain affected day at trent bridge. Parts of the uk have been hit by flash flooding, with some areas seeing more than a Months Worth of rain in 2a hours. Northamptonshire, bedfordshire and london were particularly badly hit, with Heavy Rain causing widespread Travel Disruption and damage to property. A met Office Amber Weather warning is in place across much of central and Southern England until 9 oclock tonight. A less serious yellow warning covers a wider area of england and wales until midnight. With more, heresjo black in bedfordshire. Although the wet weather was forecast, the amount of rainfall seems to have taken some by surprise. Nikki, from wheatley in 0xfordshire, was flooded 12 years ago. This weekend, it happened again. The whole of the High Street has been like a huge river with a massive current which you cant even walk safely across. So the neighbours have all been helping each other walk across the road so that they dont get swept away. 0ther neighbours have been bringing us, um, Thermos Flasks of Tea And Coffee and offers of dinner and the like throughout the day, and even popping to the loo and a bit of warm space because weve got obviously no heating. In Klopp Hill in bedfordshire, residents on this estate live on a floodplain, but say this is the worst theyve ever seen. The Sewage System under here is fairly close level to the level of the road, so it means that whenever theres an issue with the water level, its the first thing thats going to get hit and it has nowhere else to go, so itjust pushes its way up to wherever it can go. And that means flooding over the tops of toilets. Like many other schools, St Marys lower in the village was flooded, so had to close its doors to pupils today. Transport and travel was also disrupted, with many drivers struggling to navigate the Wet Roads while other routes were impassable. One of the roads impacted by the bad Weather Today is this one this is the a421. Its one of the main routes between Bedford And Milton keynes. People around here say they have never seen it like this before. And if you take a look over there, that is a car with its boot open, which shows you just how deep the floodwater is. Further south in wimbledon, flooding has seen damage at the cherry red stadium, which means tomorrow nights clash with Newcastle United has been postponed. Some areas have reported a Months Worth of rainfall since midnight alone. The worst of the wet weather could subside by later tonight, but forecasters have warned there may be further Weather Warnings later throughout the week. Jo black, Bbc News in bedfordshire. Well here in bedfordshire the weather is slightly more settled, although a little bit breezy. Im still standing next to the main road, that looks like a river at the moment, but that is usually a road with cars zipping by trying to make their way home. A little further down there, there does seem to be some pumping going on. How long that will take to get things back to normal here, we will have the wait and see. When the weather is this bad, there is saturated ground and the rivers rise, so it is an anxious time to see what the weather will do now. Thank you. New figures show the number of incidents recorded involving machetes, swords and so called Zombie Knives, has doubled in recent years. The information obtained by the bbc, comes from 32 police forces, across england and wales, on the eve of a Ban Tomorrow on possessing such knives. Last year a record 1a,000 incidents were recorded involving large blades. That compares to 7,000 in 2019. The figures dont include the met Police Or Police scotland. Of the homicides recorded last year involving sharp instruments in england and wales, 2a involved machetes, Zombie Knives or swords. Heres dan johnson. If youve got a bigger weapon, youve got more of a chance. If my knife is bigger than theirs, im going to win. These are rare voices from a world where weapons are getting bigger. I bought them to protect myself a while ago after i got attacked. I got stabbed 12 times. All right, boys, enough. Boys. Theres an Arms Race of machetes, swords and Zombie Knives on our streets. Farrons a campaigner on the front line, taking weapons from teenage hands. So in the six years that ive been collecting weapons, ive personally seen the weapons are getting bigger, from Lock Knives and were getting more to the type of Zk And Zombie style knives. You see my brother, you good . A 20 year old wants to give up a knife. Ive got a Rambo Knife when i was about 16. I why would you have something like that . Everyone walks around with them l to look after themselves really. I they feel like they need to. Theyre scared. People get choppedl up, people get hurt. And where are they getting the weapons . It was such a normal thing. You can get them off friends, you can get them online. Its so easy to get a knife. You can get it delivered to your house like a takeaway. This is ronan kanda, seconds before he was stabbed by two teenagers carrying swords they bought online using fake id. He had no enemies. He didnt do anything wrong. He didnt carry a knife. He was just a happy kind of 16 year old living his best life. It was a sword. Is that what went through my Childs Heart . I am shocked they were available when this happened to my child, and i am more shocked that they are still continuing to be available. Here they are responsible for tracking what sent in the post since 2020. Since 2020 Border Force has seized over 20,000 of these offensive weapons. Its a growing challenge. Last year, around a third of the weapons that we seized at the border were swords or big bladed weapons. And The Change in the legislation will be very welcomed by Border Force and its officers. This ban is not simple, and defining a Zombie Knife can be really complicated. For instance, this is already banned, primarily because of the imagery along the blade. But then something like this, which is actually larger, is not currently illegal, but will be covered by the restrictions coming into force at midnight tonight. But then there are other, much larger weapons that arent covered, like the swords used to kill ronan kanda. How many more lives have to go before they can ban these things and see the danger of these weapons . Show me. You got it, my guy. Another young mans got something to hand over. Why have you got weapons like that . I bought them to protect myself a while ago after i got attacked and kidnapped. I got stabbed 12 times. I got stabbed 12 times. Why did you need something so large . I mean, when i was kidnapped, i mean, when i was kidnapped, they had weapons the same size. They had weapons the same size. So i thought if that ever happens so i thought if that ever happens again, those same people, again, those same people, then i need something then i need something to combat that realistically. To combat that realistically. Bro, i appreciate yeah, stay safe. Bro, i appreciate yeah, stay safe. Weve retrieved the weapons. Weve retrieved the weapons. The tubes are actually not even long enough to properly contain these weapons. Contain these weapons. Another call. Another call. That no one was dying on his watch another gruesome collection. Stockton rushs comments emerged in documents released as part of the inquiry into the accident. And today the us coastguard revealed that after the submersible imploded, debris was strewn for hundreds of metres across the sea floor. Rebecca morelle reports. From the depths of the atlantic ocean, a picture is emerging of how the Titan Submersibles dive to the titanic turned to tragedy. It took the Titan Sub about an hour and a half to make its descent. Its last known location was about 3,300m down. Thats about 500m above the sea floor. It was about 300m away from the bow of the wreck of the titanic. Its implosion created a large debris field, just under 350m long and 150m wide. The bits of wreckage are shown by these dots. The front dome was found here, made from titanium. Its still intact. Close by was a large part from the Back End of the sub. The hull s been destroyed and parts of the tailcone were thrown much further afield. Nothing but the truth, so help you god. The us Coast Guard is trying to establish what went wrong. Last week, david lochridge, 0ceangates former marine operations the us Coast Guard heard evidence from the man who co founded 0cean Gates with stockton rush. He left the company in 2013. Initially, we werent even going to build our own subs. He explained why hed never made a dive in the submersible. Going to see a shipwreck that had already been well documented and that a bunch of people had already gone to. That didnt excite me, it didnt excite stockton. So i never really had a desire to go on any of the expeditions. More witnesses will give evidence this week as the hearing continues. Rebecca morrelle, Bbc News. Its 50 years since the then revolutionary tv information service, ceefax was launched, in an era when personal computers and Mobile Phones were unheard of in peoples homes. At its peak, 20 Million of us tuned in to its colourful text on screen for news, sport and even horoscopes, before the bbc ended the service in 2012. Tim muffett, has that story. Ceefax, a name manufactured from seeing facts. It was mind blowing. Text on your telly. You dont even have to wait for the next News Bulletin before you find out what the news is. Long before the internet, ceefax was at the Cutting Edge of technology. Its early morning when the first ceefax newsman, chief subeditor ian morton smith, arrives for duty. For those using ceefax for the first time, the big question. Graham, how does Ceefax Work . Well, its an ingenious way of using the Television Signal to get pages of information onto the tv screen. The normal Television Picture is made up of a number of lines, but there are spare lines at the top, and we use these lines to carry ceefax. A Programme System of an entirely new kind. So my dad used to record it on vhs, so hed Record Ceefax overnight. Being about 17, 18, drunk, lying on a couch after a Big Night Out and watching it endlessly until i fall asleep. Bring it back.
