The united Nations Chief has said he fears the escalating Cross Border Conflict between Israel And Hezbollah could Risk Lebanon becoming another gaza. Antonio guterres also voiced his pessimism about the chances of a Ceasefire Deal in the gaza strip. His comments came the funeral took place for a senior Hezbollah Commander killed in fridays israeli airstrike on beirut. At that funeral, the Deputy Leader of the armed group said its confrontation with israel had entered a new phase describing it as an open ended battle of reckoning. Fridays attack has been followed by a further escalation of Cross Border strikes with three people killed in an israeli attack on southern lebanon. And israel says hezbollah has fired more than 150 rockets into its territory. Some people were injured. In haifa, 30 kilometres from the lebanese border, Hospital Patients have been moved to underground facilities and residents have been told to restrict gatherings and stay near shelters. Egypt has warned that the escalating fighting risks igniting a regional war and damaging the chances of a Ceasefire Deal in gaza. The United States has warned israel against any escalation. Israel has been steadily escalating the war through radios and pages and has been doing that to stop Rocket Fire over the border into israel by their enemy. The americans, the british and many others are saying that the only way out of this, the only way to de escalate it is through a diplomatic agreement leading to a ceasefire. But, frankly, the hands of diplomats are tied because there is no ceasefire in gaza which in many senses is the key to all of this. And its also not clear who actually is listening to those diplomats at the moment. The uk Foreign Secretary, David Lammy has called for a ceasefire between Israel And Hezbollah. He was speaking at the Labour Party Conference their first one in 15 years as the party of government. We have seen a worrying escalation. Between israel and lebanese hezbollah. This is a nobody� s interest. Our message to all parties is clear, we need an immediate ceasefire from both sides so that we can get to a political settlement. So israelis and lebanese civilians can return to their homes and live in peace and security. But also, if you look in terms of what brought voters to the ballot box, it was not the usual kind of ethnic and religious tensions that brought people to vote this time around, it really had everything to do with the economy. So many elections in the past in Sri Lanka have been marred by violence, but this one was a relatively peaceful election. He has already said he will still work with the International Monetary Fund which had to bail Sri Lankan out. It did. Sri lanka currently is under a Crushing Amount of debt between the national debt and foreign debt, 92 billion, so the International Monetary Fund, as part of their Repayment Processes have implemented austerity measures, so for everyday Sri Lankans, taxes are higher, it is much more expensive to buy everyday goods, the amount of money they get paid for their work is not really going up, so there is a lot of pressure felt there. And so, there is a desire for some of that pressure to be alleviated but at the same time it is a very delicate balance for the new president because these are measures that have been implemented by the International Monetary Fund as part of their repayment programme. I want to return to our top story about the tensions in the Middle East and we have a line out from the us about President Biden and he has returned to the White House and came off marine i and we have i of the lines he mentioned and he mentioned that the us is to do all possible to prevent a wider war in the Middle East. We have learned today that in 2008 the metropolitan police investigated the case of a 15 year old girl who said she was sexually assaulted by mr Al Fayed in the boardroom of harrods. That case was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service but they took no further action. They say that was because they had no realistic prospect of a conviction based on the evidence that they had at the time. There was a similar case which made it to the cps but no further in 2015, and three subsequent cases which did not make it as far as the cps. Now, contrast that with the 20 or more women who have been in touch with the bbc to detail their experiences of Sexual Assault while working at harrods. And we have also been contacted by dozens more who have detailed their experiences of assaults at the hands of mr Al Fayed. Lets turn to germany now where the party of Chancellor 0laf Scholz has secured a narrow victory over the far right afd in a key regional election. Brandenburg in the countrys north east has been safely in Social Democrat hands since german reunification more than 30 years ago, but two regional elections earlier this month saw major gains for the far right. 0ur Correspondent Mark lowen is in potsdam, the capital of brandenburg state, with more details on the final result. So the spd, Social Democrats have won with a very narrow victory, 30. 7 of the votes just behind them, the afd, the far right alternative for deutschland at 29. 6 , and then others. After that, the cdu of the Centre Right and a new Populist Party on the left. So theres just over 1 between these two parties. So that will provide some respite, i think, for 0laf schulz, given the fact that there were increasing calls for him to stand aside, to not be the candidate of the spd in the federal elections next year. He is deeply unpopular, according to opinion polls, and the spd avoided all mention of him in this regional election. But it also shows that the afd, even though they have been beaten into second place, have massively increased their support. In the space of three regional elections in this month, they have won one in in thuringia and they came a narrow second in saxony and here in brandenburg. So it shows that really that the the old political order in this country, as it is in much of europe, is crumbling and the far right is on the rise. Capitalising on Voter Concerns about immigration, which consistently top the polls. In terms of the main Voter Worry here, and also the kind of Cost Of Living crisis with the Afds Opposition to germanys support for ukraine. And these were all concerns, and these were all issues that really chimed with with voters here, particularly young voters whose support they have captured in large swathes. In fact because it is already falling onto saturated ground, some areas have seen a Months Worth of rain, the Met Office have escalated the warning to a number in some parts, as you can see.
