Hello, im nicky schiller. We start this hour with the latest on the tensions in the Middle East. The united Nations Chief has said he fears the escalating Cross Border Conflict between Israel And Hezbollah could Risk Lebanon becoming another gaza. Antonio guterres also voiced his pessimism about the chances of a Ceasefire Deal in the gaza strip. His comments came the funeral took place for a senior Hezbollah Commander killed in fridays israeli airstrike on beirut. At that funeral, the Deputy Leader of the armed group said its confrontation with israel had entered a new phase describing it as an open ended battle of reckoning. Fridays attack has been followed by a further escalation of Cross Border strikes with three people killed in an israeli attack on southern lebanon. And israel says hezbollah has fired more than 150 rockets into its territory. This Dashcam Video from a Parked Car verified by bbc verify shows the exact moment of an impact in Kiryat Bialik in israel. You can also see in another video that cars and buildings were set alight. Some people were injured. In haifa, 30 kilometres from the lebanese border, Hospital Patients have been moved to underground facilities and residents have been told to restrict gatherings and stay near shelters. Egypt has warned that the escalating fighting risks igniting a regional war and damaging the chances of a Ceasefire Deal in gaza. The United States has warned israel against any escalation. More on that shortly but we start our coverage with this report from our diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams from Jerusalem Northern Israel under attack early this morning. Houses hit far from the lebanese border. Hezbollah seeking revenge after days of devastating setbacks, bringing chaos to a quiet suburb. Around 6. 30, there was an alarm and then immediately afterwards, a big explosion, a very, very big explosion. Israels Air Defences in action over the northern city of haifa, hezbollah s rockets now reaching deeper than ever into israel, evidence across the north that the iranian backed group is now using longer range weapons. Across the border, israels relentless assault on hezbollah goes on, jets hitting the militant groups infrastructure, especially its rocket launchers, trying to keep hezbollah on the back foot. Translation in the last few| days, we inflicted on hezbollah a sequence of blows that it did not imagine. If hezbollah has not understood the message, i promise you, it will understand the message. In beirut s southern suburbs, a military funeral for ibrahim aqil, killed on friday along with hezbollah colleagues and 29 civilians. But theres another beirut here where people cling to daily rituals and fear being sucked into a conflict not of their choosing. We dont want war, dialla says, but in The End, were not the ones making decisions. No words can describe whats happening. Where all this is heading is not clear. There have been several other moments of high tension over the past 12 months, but israels War On Hezbollah has stepped up several gears in the past week. Now the group is trying to prove that it remains a formidable enemy. Scenes like this from northern israel are likely to trigger further action, for now, the two sides locked in a dangerous spiral. Paul adams, Bbc News, jerusalem. The United States says it has warned israel that a conflict with lebanon is not in its best interests. White house national Security Spokespersonjohn Kirby has been speaking to abc about the escalation. The Prime Minister can speak for himself and what policies hes trying to pursue, what operations hes trying to conduct. We all, of course, recognise that the tensions are much higher now than they were even just a few days ago. We certainly have been monitoring the reports of strikes back and forth across that border. But all that does, george, is underscore for us how important it is to try to find a diplomatic solution. Nobody s pollyannaish about how hard thats going to be. Certainly in light of the events over the last week or so. But that doesnt mean were going to give up on it. We dont believe that a Military Conflict, and were saying this directly to our israeli counterparts, george, we dont believe that escalating this Military Conflict is in their best interests. Its certainly not going to be in the best interests of all those people that prime Minister Netanyahu says he wants to be able to send back home. Our international editor Jeremy Bowen is in Tel Aviv and considers where these Cross Border strikes between Israel And Hezbollah leave tensions in the region. Israel has been steadily escalating the war through radios and pages and has been doing that to stop Rocket Fire over the border into israel by their enemy. Over the border into israel by their enemy over the border into israel by their enemy. Will they succeed in doinu their enemy. Will they succeed in doing that . Their enemy. Will they succeed in doing that . I their enemy. Will they succeed in doing that . I dont their enemy. Will they succeed in doing that . I dont think in doing that . I dont think they will and i dont think they will and i dont think they will and i dont think they will comply because fighting israel is very deep in its dna, and its arsenal is largely intact, and the leader though clearly shaken says the retaliation will be coming, so what might israel do next . It seems absolutely set on this path of escalation at the moment. They have reinforced their forces on the border and people are talking that may be the next stage or few stages ahead could be a Ground Operation sending in troops and tanks into lebanon. Now, that would be an extremely dangerous moment. And ive spoken to a general, a former, i should say, a retired general, well informed, who says a distinct possibility. So nothing has happened in the last few days to slow down this escalation. The americans, the british and many others are saying that the only way out of this, the only way to de escalate it is through a diplomatic agreement leading to a ceasefire. But, frankly, the hands of diplomats are tied because there is no ceasefire in gaza which in many senses is the key to all of this. And its also not clear who actually is listening to those diplomats at the moment. The uk Foreign Secretary, David Lammy has called for a ceasefire between Israel And Hezbollah. He was speaking at the Labour Party Conference their first one in 15 years as the party of government. We have seen a worrying escalation. Between israel and lebanese hezbollah. This is a nobody s interest. Our message to all parties is clear, we need an immediate ceasefire from both sides so that we can get to a political settlement. So israelis and lebanese civilians can return to their homes and live in peace and security. Applause the Labour Conference follows days of questions over leaks about the downing street operation, and senior ministers judgement in accepting free clothes. The deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, rejected the suggestion that she broke rules when she stayed in the new York Flat of a Labour Donor and she told the bbc that the government was open and transparent about donations. Our political editor Chris Mason has more. In the wilderness of opposition for a decade and a half. Now labour is in power, but the political weathers a bit nippy, blustery and grey. Make no mistake, though, there is a pride here in a big victory, and the chance to actually do stuff, not just talk about it. I will Say Britain is back. Britain is back, my friends, britain is back. The very first clause of our constitution, written by the founders of the labour party, commits us to winning. Its a big responsibility, so lets get on with it. I thank you, conference. The new government inherits a tricky backdrop which has become trickier still courtesy of what are privately acknowledged by some as duffjudgments. Publicly today, the deputy Prime Minister, who has been given free clothes, and alongside her colleagues now wont accept any more, said. I get that people are angry and i get that people are upset. But youre not going to change the rules . I think the transparency is there so people can see that. But how transparent was she over a stay in New York in the flat of a Labour Donor . She did declare it, but didnt declare that a fellow Labour Mp at the time joined her there too. It was a personal holiday, and i think i followed the rules. In fact, i went above that, and i wanted to do that to be transparent about the connection that i had of the use of that apartment. But they stayed in that apartment. Sam tarry, who used to be a Labour Mp, stayed in that apartment and you didnt declare it. Did you break the rules . I dont believe i broke any rules. Theres been no comment from mr tarry. Then theres the row about the prime Ministers Chief of staff, sue gray. Last week, we told you how some figures in government are so upset with her, they were willing to leak us how much she gets paid. And some in Government Wonder if she can survive in her role. Will sue gray still be in herjob at christmas . I think so, absolutely. And sue gray has been doing an incrediblejob. She has got a huge amount of respect amongst the cabinet. Later, Angela Rayner addressed the conference, keen to crank our attention back to what the government is trying to do. When i took on this job, i promised the biggest upgrade to workers rights in a Generation Nothing less then a new deal for working people. But after years of opposition, we are on the verge of historic legislation to make work more secure. Orchestra plays All You Need Is Love for the third year in a row, liverpool is hosting Labours Conference and providing a soundtrack too. Everywhere here, for the first time in a long time, the trinkets of victory, the potential of government. But so, too, a desire to change the record after a bumpy few days. Chris mason reporting there. Next to Sri Lanka, where the president ial election has been won by a left wing anti corruption candidate. A warning, there is some Flash Photography in the following pictures. Anura Kumara Dissanayake said his victory belonged to all Sri Lankans and promised a fresh start for the country. The poll, which went to a second count for the first time in Sri Lankas history, has been described as one of the countrys closest. Our correspondent Samira Hussain is following developments from colombo. She explains how Big A Shift in Sri Lankan politics this win is. This has been an election with a lot of firsts, first we are seeing that with the election and with the win by anura Kumara Dissanayake, it is a complete shift away from the political dynasty that has dominated politics in this country for decades. So he really positioned himself as a candidate for change, and that really came to fruition. But also, if you look in terms of what brought voters to the ballot box, it was not the usual kind of ethnic and religious tensions that brought people to vote this time around, it really had everything to do with the economy. And finally what really makes this selection different is this election different is also that they were peaceful. So many elections in the past in Sri Lanka have been marred by violence, but this one was a relatively peaceful election. He has already said he will still work with the International Monetary Fund which had to bail Sri Lankan out. It did. Sri lanka currently is under a Crushing Amount of debt between the national debt and foreign debt, 92 billion, so the International Monetary Fund, as part of their Repayment Processes have implemented austerity measures, so for everyday Sri Lankans, taxes are higher, it is much more expensive to buy everyday goods, the amount of money they get paid for their work is not really going up, so there is a lot of pressure felt there. And so, there is a desire for some of that pressure to be alleviated but at the same time it is a very delicate balance for the new president because these are measures that have been implemented by the International Monetary Fund as part of their repayment programme. I want to return to our top story about the tensions in the Middle East and we have a line out from the us about President Biden and he has returned to the White House and came off marine i and we have i of the lines he mentioned and he mentioned that the us is to do all possible to prevent a wider war in the Middle East. So some comments from President Biden we havejust gone comments from President Biden we have just gone saying the us is to do, quote, all possible, to prevent a wider war in the Middle East. We will get more on that as we get it coming into us. Now its time for a look at todays sport. There was a thrilling game at Etihad Stadium Wherejohn stones scored deep into stoppage time to salvage a point for Manchester City as they were held 2 2 by arsenal who were down to 10 men after Leandro Trossard was sent off. Substitute stones scored in the eighth minute of time added on, after goals from Ricardo Calafiori and gabriel has threatened citys 32 game unbeaten run at home in the premier league. Earlier, Erling Haaland had scored his 100th goal for city to open the scoring injust his 105th game, equalling cristiano Ronaldos Record for the fastest man to score 100 goals for a european club. City move back to the top of the table above liverpool, arsenal are fourth. They put 4 players in a line, so incredible control and incredible commitment. I think we are not able to do that as a team, and bigger Compliment Arsenal because they defend every ball and every block till The End and we were patient enough for turning left and right, then across and across and we look at the right moment and we look at the right moment and then we were fortunate in The End. It and then we were fortunate in The End. ,. ,. , and then we were fortunate in theend. , The End. It is a blow because we had it, The End. It is a blow because we had it. 97 The End. It is a blow because we had it, 97 minutes, The End. It is a blow because we had it, 97 minutes, they| we had it, 97 minutes, they extended we had it, 97 minutes, they extended again and we end up conceding the goal, but probably it is already a miracle. We play 55 or 56 minutes miracle. We play 55 or 56 minutes with ten men, and this team, minutes with ten men, and this team, it minutes with ten men, and this team, it is minutes with ten men, and this team, it is unbelievable what we have team, it is unbelievable what we have done but for sure not the game we have done but for sure not the game any spectator wanted to watch in the days early fixture, Brighton And Nottingham forest Drew 2 2. Chris woods early penalty gave forest the lead but two goals from the Hosts Throuthack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck had brighton ahead at the break. Substitute Ramon Sosa levelled matters 20 minutes from The End and then a Second Yellow To Morgan gibbs white sparked a Touchline Melee that saw both managers sent to the stands. The Crown Prosecution Service says it twice considered bringing charges against the former Harrods Owner mohammed Al Fayed, but on both occasions, it concluded there was no realistic prospect of a conviction. All of this has come to light since a Bbc Documentary this week led to dozens of women coming forward with allegations of being sexually assaulted or raped by the billionaire, who died last year. Ben king has the latest. We have learned today that in 2008 the metropolitan police investigated the case of a 15 year old girl who said she was sexually assaulted by mr Al Fayed in the boardroom of harrods. That case was passed to the Crown Prosecution Service but they took no further action. They say that was because they had no realistic prospect of a conviction based on the evidence that they had at the time. There was a similar case which made it to the cps but no further in 2015, and three subsequent cases which did not make it as far as the cps. Now, contrast that with the 20 or more women who have been in touch with the bbc to detail their experiences of Sexual Assault while working at harrods. And we have also been contacted by dozens more who have detailed their experiences of assaults at the hands of mr Al Fayed. The deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, was on the television this morning and she called his allegations horrifying as she said she was concerned about powerful people who seem to get away with it time and time again. Harrods is now no longer by mr Al Fayed who died last year, but sold to the state of qatar. They say that the victims were failed and they will settle legal claims. Ben king reporting. And you can listen to the Podcast World of Secrets Predator at harrods. You can find it on the bbc sounds App Or Search for it online. Lets turn to germany now where the party of Chancellor 0laf Scholz has secured a narrow victory over the far right afd in a key regional election. Brandenburg in the countrys north east has been safely in Social Democrat hands since german reunification more than 30 years ago, but two regional elections earlier this month saw major gains for the far right. 0ur Correspondent Mark lowen is in potsdam, the capital of brandenburg state, with more details on the final result. So the spd, Social Democrats have won with a very narrow victory, 30. 7 of the votes just behind them, the afd, the far right alternative for deutschland at 29. 6 , and then others. After that, the cdu of the Centre Right and a new Populist Party on the left. So theres just over 1 between these two parties. So that will provide some respite, i think, for 0laf schulz, given the fact that there were increasing calls for him to stand aside, to not be the candidate of the spd in the federal elections next year. He is deeply unpopular, according to opinion polls, and the spd avoided all mention of him in this regional election. But it also shows that the afd, even though they have been beaten into second place, have massively increased their support. In the space of three regional elections in this month, they have won one in in thuringia and they came a narrow second in saxony and here in brandenburg. So it shows that really that the the old political order in this country, as it is in much of europe, is crumbling and the far right is on the rise. Capitalising on Voter Concerns about immigration, which consistently top the polls. In terms of the main Voter Worry here, and also the kind of Cost Of Living crisis with the Afds Opposition to germanys support for ukraine. And these were all concerns, and these were all issues that really chimed with with voters here, particularly young voters whose support they have captured in large swathes. Next, Russias Chess Team is to remain banned from international competitions. The international Chess Federation voted to maintain excluding russia, along with its ally, belarus because of the war in ukraine. Paul moss is our europe regional editor. He told me about the background to the ban. Russia and belarus were kicked out of the international Chess Federation after the invasion of ukraine and the reason was this. What the supporters of the move argued is that chess is not like any other pastime or game in russia, but it is directly controlled by Vladimir Putin and if you look at the russian Chess Federation, on its board they have the Kremlin Spokesperson and the former defence secretary, so they argue this is an arm of government, effectively and there is another thing, what they claim is that the russian Chess Federation organise matches in the area of ukraine that have been captured by russia so they say effectively chessis russia so they say effectively chess is part of the invasion. The boycott of russia really matters. You have to understand chessis matters. You have to understand chess is taken very seriously in russia and if you look at the last hundred years, most of the last hundred years, most of the World Chess champions were russian. So while Vladimir Putin did was organise, this weekend, there was a Chess Competition in the capital of hungary, budapest, and the small nation, kyrgyzstan, an ally of russia tabled a motion to readmit Russia And Belarus and i should say that the ukrainians took this very seriously. Volodymyr zelensky sent one of his top people to budapest to lobby countries to vote to maintain the ban. I want to go back to the breaking news i mention. President biden has arrived at the White House and has been talking about the tensions in the Middle East. Lets take a listen to what he told reporters as he arrived back. Are you worried about rising tension in the middle East Question why yes, i am, but we have to keep a wider war from breaking out. We are still pushing hard. Thank you. That was President Biden just to reiterate what he said, we are going to do everything we can to keep a wider war from breaking out and we are still pushing hard. Those are the words of President Biden as he arrived back at the White House, talking about those tensions in the Middle East between Israel And Hezbollah. You can get more on that on the Bbc News website. Hello there. A big contrast in our weather this weekend with a suntan in the North West, the Grey Cloud to the East Coast and torrential downpours for england and wales, some places have already had a Months Worth of rain, leaving spray and standing water out there, the warnings still remain in force throughout the Rest Today and into monday because this area of low pressure remains around three monday. In fact because it is already falling onto saturated ground, some areas have seen a Months Worth of rain, the Met Office have escalated the warning to a number in some parts, as you can see. But generally the most of england and wales it looks like another disturbed day as we go into monday with showers or longer spells of intense rain falling on that saturated ground, leading to flooding impacts, potential damage to buildings, disruption to transport and we see that already, we have more storms to come through the rest of this evening, we have got drier weather up in the North And West but that misty low Cloud And Fog creeps back in and where we get the clear spells a bit of mist and fog, and another warm and uncomfortable night for sleeping in southern areas for some, fresher further north. But you may have noticed a Weather Front arriving at the far north of scotland, that is a change in the type of weather as we go to the latter type on monday. But its the story further south about this intense Rain Feeding into the River Systems so we will keep an eye on the Flood Warnings as well as the weather warnings, the amber is in force, and we will keep you updated on any movements there, even if it dries and brightens up, that will allow some heavy thunderstorms to develop but with more cloud generally temperatures will be pegged back a little bit, it gets cloudy of the Northern Ireland as well as North West england. As we go into the early week, the risk of torrential downpours continues across england and wales. By Tuesday Drier but we have the rain by that stage and then mid week we might well have more wet weather, especially england and wales, but also combined with autumnal gales so we need to keep an eye on that. And once that clears the way we open the door to some northerly winds. Colder by The End of the week, temperatures down into 11, 12 in london, but between now and then we have the amber warning, more Heavy Rain to come. The headlines. The Un Chief warns lebanon could risk becoming another gaza as Cross Border attacks between Israel And Hezbollah intensify. Arriving back at the White House President Biden has said the us is doing everything it can to prevent a wider war. Speaking at the Labour Party Conference, the Foreign Secretary David Lammy called for a De Escalation between israel and his brother and an immediate ceasefire so a political settlement could be achieved.
