The European Union has pledged to loan ukraine nearly a0 billion dollars to help in its grinding war with russia. The cash stems from a wider, but so far stalled, plan by wealthy g7 nations to raise money for kyiv using frozen russian assets. President zelensky suggested the money would go towards repairing ukraines energy infrastructure, which has been repeatedly struck by russian drone and missile attacks as well crucial Air Defences and drone production. The loan was announced during a visit To Kyiv by the Eu Commission president , Ursula Von Der leyen. We can speak now to Carl BildtCo Chair of the European Council on foreign relations, and the former Prime Minister of sweden. Hello, thank you forjoining us on the programme. How significant is this announcement from the Eu Today . I think it is highly significant for the reason That the war is what they called. Ukraine needs our financial support to get its State Finances functioning. That has to do with electricity supplies, basic social functions in ukrainian society. The war is coughing it back costing roughly 140 billion, hundred and 40 Million euros a day. Of course, they have lost part of their economy. So the support That we can give the eu in this particular case is absolutely critical to the continuing functioning of the ukrainian state and society. Has ukrainian state and society. As i mentioned, this deal was agreed by the g7 back in the Summer And Hadnt come to fruition yet. The eu seems to be taking an increasing portion of the loan in terms of. Compared to what the us was going to be raising. This is because the us has talked about legal risks. It is interesting, isnt it, That the eu seems to be taking on a large amount of this. And almost, perhaps, is it saying we are going to go alone unless . Either way, we are going to breakfree, i suppose, with the g7, because they are so keen to get going on this . This particular thing we see coming up at the g7 is logic from That point of view. A larger proportion coming out of the eu or the european countries. The uk included in That. The issues That forced on the us treasury. The issues That lenski forced on the us treasury. The issues That lenski is very keen to press is the use of long west pens, allies weapons. They have indicated ThatThat is the location where they are going to take a long time discussion on the outside. That is the meeting next week. I think That is going to be fairly critical. More than 70,000 People Fighting in russias military have now died in the war in ukraine, according to new research by the bbc. Working with the independent website mediazone, Bbc Russia has analysed the names of the dead published on Social Media, in obituaries and official publications and theyve discovered That more russian civilians are dying on the battlefield than soldiers. 0lga Ivshina has this report. The faces of russian fighters killed in ukraine are changing now. More and more men in Their 40s, 50s and even 60s are volunteering for the front line. 62 year old Renat Kushnarev was one of them. Before he volunteered, he had two jobs fighting for russia. He earned seven times what he did before. Russian authorities have repeatedly increased sign up bonuses to attract men like renat. He died in february this year. We dont know where exactly, but thousands of kilometres away from his home in russia. Last month, russian forces faced a ukrainian offensive in kursk, the first on russian territory. The kremlin claims this attack has encouraged more volunteers to sign up to fight. There are no official figures on the numbers of russians killed, so since the start of the war, the bbc and its Partner Mediazona have been trying to build a picture of whats happening on the front lines. We have been using photos of Social Media posts and News Articles to uncover the scale of russian losses. This graph shows the extent of russias weekly battlefield deaths. We have been able to verify since the start of the war 70,000 lives lost, but the real figures will be significantly higher. It tails off a bit in recent months because we are still gathering the data, it doesnt necessarily mean fewer people are dying. Lets now bring the numbers of volunteers we have been able to identify That have died at the start. The numbers were pretty low as losses were inflicted on regular soldiers and convicts, but the numbers of volunteers dying has dramatically increased, shown with this spike here from last october. Since then, over 100 volunteers have died each week, and in some weeks Thats more than doubled. The spike in the number killed coincides with the russian offensive on avdiivka, in the east of ukraine, one of the war s deadliest confrontations. They are fighting a battle where theyre not prepared and might not have the needed equipment to fight. There isnt sufficient preparation, and there are also Equipment Shortages or nonexistent equipment for which there have been prepared for. As our count only includes deaths reported publicly, the true figure of losses is significantly higher. Asked for comment, the russian government did not respond. Earlier this year, ukraine went public with its losses, acknowledging 31,000 of its soldiers had been killed. Us intelligence suggests That number is higher. Moscow continues to push on, willing to exchange thousands of lives for small pieces of scattered land. 0lga ivashina, bbc news. To talk more about these figures i am joined by samuel ramani, Associate Fellow at the Defence And Security think tank rusi, and the author of Putins War on ukraine. Thank you for coming. I think That, like the previous reporter was saying, an understatement. We have seen some other analyses, and the brazenness british Ministry Of Defence where suggesting the highest points when not in early 2023. Bed early stages of the war, when they were marching ahead with no food and logistics, more recently, towards kharkiv. I think this number is very high but the real number is probably more. In terms of the breakdown of this, as we were hearing, more volunteers are dying than any other category. 20 . And in terms of prisoners, 19 . Is That down to the lack of training, equipment, perhaps . Definitely. Many periods during this intervention where the conscripts and the regular soldiers were struggling for a serious lack of Artillery Shells and other equipment. 0bviously, shells and other equipment. Obviously, the delivery of That and drones at home has eased some of those shortages compared to where they were in late 2023. But all of those casualties could have been avoided with more equipment. Also more vital logistics and Supply Chains earlier in the war. Simply better. Fortheir forces. Most recently in kursk. What can you tell us about the incentives being offered to these volunteers . The incentives these volunteers . The incentives are these volunteers . The incentives are daring. | these volunteers . The incentives are daring. One these volunteers . Tie incentives are daring. One of them is, obviously, monetary. 0bviously for the people in moscow, it brings in thousands of money a year with bonuses to fight on the front line. If you are only learning. If your child is a fussy eater its not yourfault. Scientists have done a whole study on this looking at identical and non identical twins over many years and they found That its largely down to genes. I think today this study was all over the headlines and the fact That im here tonight shows me That im here tonight shows me That so many people welcome this news. In our study we really had two aims. We really wanted to investigate how fussy eating develops across development. We have a study of a group of twins, family of twins That we followed from early to early adolescence. We asked parents to rate their childrens fascinating. The second aim of our study was to really explore if those individual differences in fussy eating i mainly due to genetic factors and, or environmental factors. First, Ithink Factors and, or environmental factors. First, i think That is one of the important messages. Apart from the dramatic side, people really like to jump on this, but eating is very common. In oursample, the majority of the children will experience some fussy eating across the development, something most families, children experience. We can see from long term data That is the children get older, fussy eating becomes a little bit more, you know, more extreme, lets say. More obvious. With time, some of That fussy eating goes down again. We can see That the data said That around seven years That eating tends to live tends to peak. Then It Levels out. It kind of makes sense. As children get older, the parents introduce more food. Less resistance at the Dinner Table trying new things. It makes sense to us That this kind of behaviour increases with time. It kind of behaviour increases with time kind of behaviour increases with time. It shows That it is not a phase with time. It shows That it is not a phase as with time. It shows That it is not a phase as well. With time. It shows That it is not a phase as well. You with time. It shows That it is not a phase as well. For some people, not just children, some toddlers. For some people, not just children, some adults, just children, some adults, they come fussy eaters in adult hood. Many of us either think of ourselves are fussy or not fussy eaters at all. When you think about the genetic parts, the second aim of the study, because we have between sample, we can use the twin design to really estimate how much of the individual differences within our fussy Eating Sample is due to environment. We really see That it seems to be genetic. Brute That it seems to be genetic. We have not That it seems to be genetic. We have got one minute and a half left. What is most is what people do about it. Some advice for us . If you have a fussy eater, what can you do . The first thing eater, what can you do . The first thing is eater, what can you do . The first thing is relaxed. Eater, what can you do . Tte first thing is relaxed. But eating is very common and often causes a lot of stress around the Dinner Table. We really wanted to slow down the process and not put more pressure on your children. Putting pressure on your children is not necessarily good for them and will also not get the result you want. 0ne will also not get the result you want. One thing we recommend is for repeat exposure. Instead of saying eat this entire plate of broccoli, offer your child is a tiny amount, let them Chase Taste it, and then put it away again. Repeat That thing over multiple days. With time, evidence says children will start to like those kinds of foods. Broccoli is often the example people use but are fiercely it can be any other obviously it can be any other. Co author of That report. Stay with us. Hello. Weve had a real mixture of weather across the uk friday. Some low Cloud And Mist across the North East of the uk, Heavy Thundery showers in the south, and weve seen some pleasant spells of sunshine elsewhere, notably across parts of the northwest of the uk, where weve also had light winds. Now, looking at the weather overnight tonight, its going to keep a lot of low cloud across some of these North Sea coasts. Cloud becomes a bit more extensive across england and wales. A few more showers and thunderstorms possible in the south, and probably clouding over in Northern Ireland as well. Temperatures for the most part overnight around 11 14 degrees, so a relatively mild start to the day on saturday, but another cloudy start as well. Now, as we go through the morning, most areas will see some sunshine breaking through, but the cloud could again linger across eastern coasts of scotland, where it will be misty and rather cool. Temperatures probably around 13 degrees or so. Further southwards across england and wales, there will be one or two thundery showers, and some of those could be quite intense. Therell be a number of places, though, That stay dry and dodge the downpours. Temperatures high teens to low 20s. Then through Saturday Night and into sunday, were going to get some Heavy Rain moving up. And in the worst case scenario, we could be looking at about a Months Worth of rain in the space of 24 hours. And Thatjust increases the threat of seeing some localised flooding issues. So sunday rain, extensive, heavy and thundery across large areas of england and wales, perhaps avoiding most of northern england, Northern Ireland and scotland. Certainly staying dry. Decent sunshine for the north west, but probably, again some low Cloud And Mist affecting some of our eastern coast of scotland. Into next week, areas of low pressure are set to move in off the atlantic, bringing several belts of Heavy Rain, so That could cause one or two issues. And even as the low pressures pushes through, well then start to get this plunge of colder north westerly wind heading in. Now, the first sign of That change to colder Weather Conditions will be with us on monday, as we start to get these colder northerly winds move into Northern Scotland with some sunny spells and showers here. Some Heavy Rain still around england and wales where itll be quite gusty. Temperatures not doing too badly 19 for norwich and london, but certainly turning colderfor Northern Scotland. 13 degrees in aberdeen. Well, Thats below average for the time of year. And That colder weather is going to push southwards as we go through the course of the week, eventually arriving across Southern England towards thursday. Bye for now. Hello, im lucy grey.
