That's about to change. Mr powell and his colleagues are set to interest rates. In york, the arrival of autumn marks a change. After raising interest rates 11 times, america's central bank is all but certain to unwind that, but how quickly they go down from here is still up for grabs. Perfectly like this on your porch, and then we price it less than picking up the pumpkins themselves. At this farm shop, the rebirth of the economy, as inflation falls closer to the fed's official target of 2%, is yet another moment of change. We want stability. Isn't that what everyone wants? that means security. Stability means you can't predict what your business will do, how your community will grow, all those things, and that means you are secure. Still, on the outskirts of town, the first rate cut since the pandemic may not fix america's housing market. Ben rutt is director of marketing at keystone custom homes. He tells me, despite the mortgage squeeze, house prices here have remained high. Economics 101, we are seeing not enough supply, and if the demand increases because affordability gets even better, assuming the supply remained static, as it is, we are anticipating it will push pricing even higher. So rates are on their way down, a potential boost to businesses and consumers. The question now is how low will they go. Michelle fleury, bbc news, york, pennsylvania. As wall street braces for an interest rate cut tomorrow, alicia garciaherrero from natixis lays out what the fed's next move could mean for markets and economies in asia. Powell said it all. The time has come, and we've been waiting very long, economists, traders, everyone has been wrong for months, expecting a cut that was delayed because of stubborn inflation. But what we have now is rather moderate inflation. We still have a little bit of unexpected inflation just a week ago but the data shows deceleration for the us, and inflation under control. So, yes, the fed is going to cut. The only question is will it be 25 basis points or 50 basis points? the latter would give a signal that the us economy is accelarating much faster. We think it will be 25 basis points, just to show the market the direction, but not necessarily the urgency. That is our call, 25 basis points most likely today. We know markets like to move ahead of things, and sort of try and guesstimate what is going to happen next. Have they priced in a rate cut of 25 points? yes, so actually, we have an average, because there are different calls there, a rate cut of 40, a larger group of people think 50, and others are thinking 25. That's where we are. But the important thing is not really that, to be frank, it is the idea that we are going to have many rate cuts, and the most aggressive houses think it will be and the most aggressive houses think it will be 125 basis points, this year. We are already in september, so you can see for these analysts, the us could be in a recession. Frankly after yesterday's retail data, which was quite positive for the us, there is a little bit of a term that the us will indeed for most analysts avert recession. We had some big news from instagram overnight. The social media app announced an overhaul of its services forteenagers, including more safeguards to protect them from harmful content. The bbc*s north america technology correspondent lily jamali has all the details. For instagram users under the age of 18, their accounts will now be private by default. That means changes to who can contact them on the app. It also means changes to the kind of content they can see. The parent company of instagram, meta, says they will try to filter out content, such as fights, and cosmetic procedures, as well as vulgar language, to give you a couple of examples. For parents, this now means they will now be able to see who their children are interacting with, who they are messaging with on the app, and one more change i want to highlight, notifications, instagram will no longer be sending notifications to these younger users overnight between ten pm and 7am and that is a change lawmakers, an advocate is have wanted to see them make for quite some time. The context is there is now a bill advancing in the us congress. The kids safety act imposes a legal duty of care on meta as well as other social media companies, which means they have to take reasonable steps to protect kids online. That bill passed in the senate in august, injuly, i should say, and is now advancing in the house. Sceptics say that is the reason instagram is announcing these changes now. But i did speak with a meta spokesman earlier, they said the timing is entirely coincidental. Canada and asean they're on opposite sides of the world map but there's keen interest from both sides to do business together. Negotiations for an aseancanada free trade agreement, which started in 2021, is expected to wrap up by next year. Wayne farmer, president of the canadaasean business council, explained why the two blocs are important to each other. Certainly, there are certain clusters in canadian industries such as ai, energy, agribusiness and food as well as infrastructure investment, that are top of mind in some of the opportunities we see in asean. My membership is over 85 canadian corporates, and interestingly enough, there are about 30 or 35 different industry sectors represented, so you can see there's quite a diverse set of opportunities in an asean region for canadian industry, and not only is it an investment destination, it is also a market. So, obviously, taking advantage of the increase in incomes, a rise of the middle class, and the search for reliable trading partners, there are growing markets here for canadians, notjust for supply chain investment but to sell their actual products and or services to the markets. And what does asean sort of get out of this? i think asean gets a reliable trading partner. Obviously in some of the changes in the global supply chains and geopolitics, we are seeing smaller regions, such as asean and canada, working together or much better able to uphold rulesbased trade. We offer a depth of opportunities, in particular food and energy security, which is something, postcovid, that has been on the top of mind for many asean nations, and canada in its trade has never weaponised the use of energy or food security, so in that sense we are a reliable trading partner, going forward. Let's now turn to india, which will soon conduct its national census after a delay of nearly three years. This is a critical data set for economic policymaking but was last updated almost 13 years ago. The bbc*s india business correspondent nikhil inamdar has the latest from mumbai. A onceinadecade census was last conducted back in 2011. It was due in 2021 but was delayed by the pandemic and other technical hurdles. The modi government has drawn sharp criticism from economists and policymakers for dragging their feet on a new survey, because a census is crucial to plug key data gaps. While technically it is only an enumeration of the country's entire population, it gives policymakers information on a range of indicators, from housing and urbanisation to migration, fertility and mortality rates, among others. Without it, resource allocation in the budget becomes a difficult task. The process of conducting the census is likely to begin in september, according to some reports, and it will take at least 18 months for the new survey to be completed, given how complex the task is. We just want to recap the market moves on wall street before we go. All three major indices closed the tuesday session relatively flat. Investors are now focused on the fed as the central bank unveils its decision. And that's it for this edition of business today. Thanks for watching. Hey. I'm lola, with the catch up. Tonight insta's overhaul for teens, the last day of london fashion week, and an escaped capybara. Insta has announced a pretty big policy change to help protect teenagers online. Under16s will now have teen accounts, which give parents more control to set privacy settings. This comes as social media companies are under pressure to better protect children. It's the last day of london fashion week. I caught up with chet lo, one of the 250 designers showcasing their collections. He told me more about his designs. This collection is really inspired by my mum. It's entitled mai's blossoms, and it's kind of taking on the journey that she went through from a titan in the corporate world, and then now becoming a painter and a school teacher. We took, like, classic office wear and then mixed it up with, like, beautiful, aethereal tones. Chet also partnered with a project that makes fashion more accessible to visuallyimpaired people. The perfect designer to enable guests to not only listen to such descriptive audio descriptions, but also to have these tactile tours and feel the fabric swatches. Another story now.
