Reported that that may have expanded to around 130, not because there are additional allegations of wrongdoing, but more because they're effectively multiples of original charges over various seasons. The premier league are simply not clarifying the case, but regardless, it's a sprawling case over 1a seasons, and so it would be surprising if there wasn't a significant period of time dedicated to considering the verdict by that three—person panel. So, estimates have ranged from any time in the new year all the way through to spring. And of course, it's not beyond the realms, perhaps, that some kind of compromise, some kind of arrangement or deal may be reached because the legal bill is spiraling —tens of millions of pounds. It's estimated to have cost both sides already. And it may well be that at some stage some kind of arrangement is reached. But i think as it stands, if this runs its course, it's very hard to say. It could go to an appeal, at least one round of appeals and so it could spread well into next year. And given that it's been going on for several years, that wouldn't be a surprise. Well, sticking with football, the champions league is back this week with 36 clubs now competing in the revamped group stage, four more than previously. Here's sam harris with all the details. The 2024—25 season brings a new format for the men's uefa champions league, and it's a big change from what fans have been used to. In short, it means more teams, more games and a single league table replacing the initial group stage structure, which had been in place since 1991. This season's competition will be expanded from 32 to 36 teams, and each club will play eight games before the knockouts. Every team will be drawn against eight different opponents, two from each of the four seeding pots, and they'll play four matches at home and four away. The new league phase will stretch beyond christmas, culminating in an epic 18—game finale on wednesday, the 29th of january. Teams that finish the league phase in positions one to eight qualify directly for the round of 16. Teams ranked nine to 2a must face each other in a knockout playoff round to join the top eight in the round of 16, and teams in positions 25 to 36 are eliminated from all competitions in the knockout phase. Well, it's business as usual. All ties are contested home and away, culminating with a single leg final. Uefa hopes that the new format, which also forms the basis of the europa league and europa conference league, will ensure fast changing and unpredictable standings. More matches between equally ranked teams, with fans able to enjoy more top clashes right from the first matchday. So there you have it, a big change for europe's elite club football competition. Sam harris there. Well, the champions league holders real madrid get their defence under way on tuesday against stuttgart, aiming to win the trophy for a record extending 16th time. And it will be kylian mbappe*s first match in europe for them after his summer move from psg. England midfielderjude bellingham is also back fit and available for carlo ancelotti's side. He's confident his squad can deliver again when it matters. Translation: we've lost two important players, nacho and toni kroos. We've also lostjoselu and these players have been replaced by the best player in the world or one of the best players in the world. Do i think we have a better squad than last year? yes, i do. Liverpool renews their rivalry with ac milan in their opening match on tuesday. The two, of course, have had some epic ties over the years. Arne slot suffered his first defeat at the weekend in the league, so they will be looking to bounce back strongly. Federico chiesa, their new signing from juventus, available for selection. Goalkeeper alisson, though, sounded a warning on the competition's new format and the amount of games which might be great for the fans, he said, but comes with concerns for players. I think for the supporters it's amazing. More games, more bigger games, big teams playing against each other. Uh, for us players as well, is a good thing that you are going to play against the best in europe, and it's always a good idea to add some games to the calendar that is not busy. Uh, i'm being ironic a little bit. Um, but again, we are here to do ourjob. Um, sometimes nobody asks the players what they think about adding more games. So maybe our opinion doesn't matter. Well, away from football now, and the commonwealth games could be returning to glasgow in 2026. It's only ten years since they last hosted the event, and the scottish government is holding talks with the commonwealth games australia over details of a possible multi—million—pound deal to hold them again in two years* time. They've been in peril since the state of victoria withdrew as potential hosts because of rising costs. Chris mclaughlin gave us the latest on monday. It has been a frantic few days in relation to this story. I am told just last week, the chances of this happening were 50/50 at best. Things have moved on significantly over the weekend, primarily due to that offer of millions of pounds from commonwealth games australia to get this over the line. Now remember, the state of victoria pulled out due to financial concerns. Now that injection of cash seems to have satisfied a very nervous scottish government, who are adamant that no public money would be spent this time around. Now, the scottish government had a conversation with commonwealth games australia this morning. I'm told that meeting went very well. It should be ratified in some way tomorrow, probably announcement at some point later tomorrow afternoon. Now, what will glasgow 2026 look like? it will be a scaled down games, just ten sports compared to the 17 here ten years ago. It will also be a lot cheaper — £114 million compared to over £500 million last time. It's a new blueprint. It's a new commonwealth games, but it looks like they are heading back to glasgow in 2026. Chris mclaughlin there. Finally, billy monger*s life changed seven years ago when he had both his legs amputated following a crash. The former racing driver is now trying to break the record for the fastest double amputee to complete the annual ironman world championship. He's doing it for charity and stepped up his preparations at an iron man event on the south coast of england at the weekend. Juliette parkin reports. Taking the plunge head first into a real test of how the months of grueling training have gone. Billy monger was on the dorset coast yesterday, completing a 1. 2—mile sea swim, 56—mile cycle followed by a 13. 1—mile run. Billy will have to cover double that distance in the hawaiian heat. It's been multiple double amputees that have attempted this challenge, and they haven't been able to finish because of the scale of the challenge. So there's no there's definitely not one part of me that's underestimating how hard it is going to bejust to finish in under 17 hours, let alone try and break that record of 16 hours 26. It's probably going to be the toughest thing i've ever done. He's had to learn to swim in open water, how to adapt to cycling with prosthetics, and how to run long distances with blades. The ironman in hawaii is widely regarded as the toughest one—day endurance event in the world. I've been training since october of last year, doing about between 10—20 hours of training a week. So yeah, you could say i'm feeling ready for it. But equally, nothing can prepare me for what i'm going to face out in hawaii. As hard as this challenge is, this is another level again. The amount of equipment, i mean, coming into transition. We've got suitcases of gear when everyone else isjust sort of rocking up with a single bag. A lot of, uh, organisation and a lot of self—discipline. Billy had both legs amputated after a near—fatal crash in 2017. Since then, he's worked as a broadcaster and raised £3 million for comic relief by walking, cycling and kayaking 140 miles in 2021. His ironman will also raise funds for the charity. I know where that money is going and how important it is. Billy is hoping to cross the finish line in hawaii next month in a record—breaking time, and with the heat and humidity, that celebratory hug with his mum mightjust be a bit more sweaty next time. Incredible stuff there from billy monger. That is just about it from us. You can, of course, get all the latest sports news from the usual places — the bbc sport app orfrom our website — bbc. Com/sport for that. But for me and the rest of the team here on sportsday, thanks very much indeed for watching and we'll see you again next time. Hello. On monday, we had an area of high pressure establish itself across the uk, and with that came plenty of sunshine. For example, here in capel curig, and just to the south in ceredigion, we had the day's highest temperature — up to 22 degrees in the warmest spots. Now, you'll notice a bit more in the way of clouds towards the north west, and indeed, over the next few hours could see some splashes of rain work into shetland for a time. Quite breezy conditions here. Watch out for a few mist and fog patches over the next few hours forming across parts of north west england, wales, the west midlands and south west england, too. Visibility could drop down to about 100m in the densest of those fog patches. So, it's quite a chilly start to the day, with temperatures down at around five degrees in the coldest spots. The high pressure, though, is here to stay for the next few days. Now, starting off on tuesday, a bit of rain clearing away from shetland, might see a few patches of cloud across east anglia first thing, but it should brighten up with some sunshine here, and any mist and fog patches clearing to reveal another beautiful day. Plenty of autumn sunshine and those temperatures very similar to those on monday — high teens to low 20s. One of the warmest spots could end up being northern scotland, with highs here of 22, western counties of northern ireland — 21. Middle parts of the week, perhaps a bit more in the way of cloud just to start off across parts of england, east wales that will thin and break with time, and there will be more of a breeze blowing for east anglia in the south—east of england. Quite breezy for the far north of scotland, too, but otherwise, it's another beautiful day. After a chilly morning, there'll be loads more sunshine and temperatures 23 there for northern scotland, a 2k in south east england. These temperatures are quite a bit above average for this time of the year. It's a case of spot the difference really, for thursday. Again a few mist and fog patches, a few patches of cloud initially, but loads and loads of sunshine to come as we go on through the afternoon. Top temperatures — 2a again around london, a 22 for western scotland, and we're still around 20 degrees or so for western counties of northern ireland. It will feel warm in that september sunshine. We do, however, start to see some signs of a change in the pattern through friday and into the weekend as low pressure starts to threaten from the south. This looks quite likely to bring us some heavy, thundery showers or some longer spells of rain across england and wales. But at this stage, it looks like scotland and northern ireland, probably northern england, should stay fine well into the weekend. Live from washington. This is bbc news.
