He was playing with a contact of his, a friend. It's understood secret service agents opened fire on a suspect, who then fled the scene by car. Donald trump's campaign released a statement in which the former president says: there were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, i wanted you to hear this first: i am safe and well. It wasn't long after that we got more comments from him as well, and a fundraising campaign note he sent to his supporters. He says he's never going to slow down, he's never going to slow down, he's never going to slow down, he's never going to give up, and he says his resolve is only stronger after another attempt on my life. Lots of images coming tine us from the scene and what happened afterwards. An image of the moment when security services surrounded the suspect has been released. He was detained in martin county by the sheriff's office on the northbound area of interstate 95, following an alert which told officers to be on the lookout for a vehicle seen leaving the golf course in palm beach county. Us media have named his as ryan routh, us media have named him as ryan routh, a 58—year—old from hawaii. And there are more details emerging about the suspect, bbc verify is looking into reports that he was involved in efforts to get foreign fighters into ukraine to battle the russian army. But first, here's the palm beach county sheriff explaining how the incident unfolded. At 1:30pm, a call come out — shots fired — called in by the secret service. Because we're in constant contact with them all the time, we were notified of that and we had units here that immediately sealed up the area. Fortunately, we were able to locate a witness that came to us and said, and i took a picture of the vehicle and the tag — which was great. So, we had that information. Our real—time crime centre put it out to the licenceplate readers, and we were able to get a hit on that vehicle on i95 as it was headed into martin county. We got a hold of martin county sheriff's office, alerted them, and they spotted the vehicle and pulled it over and detained the guy. After that, we took the victim — i'm sorry, the witness that witnessed the incident — took, flew him up there, and he identified as the person that he saw running out of the bushes thatjumped into the car. Now, in the bushes where this guy was is an ak—47—style rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung two backpacks which were hung on the fence on the fence that had ceramic tile in them, that had ceramic tile in them, and a gopro which he was going and a gopro which he was going to take pictures of. To take pictures of. So, those are being so, those are being processed right now. Processed right now. The secret service agent the secret service agent that was on the course that was on the course did a fantasticjob. Did a fantasticjob. What they do is, they have what they do is, they have an agent thatjumps one hole an agent thatjumps one hole ahead of time to where ahead of time to where the president was at, the president was at, and he was able to spot and he was able to spot this rifle barrel this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence sticking out of the fence and immediately engaged that individual, vice—president kamala harris. And immediately engaged that individual, at which time at which time the individual took off. So that's what we know the individual took off. So that's what we know about the investigation. About the investigation. We have somebody we have somebody in custody right now. In custody right now. It is a potential suspect, it is a potential suspect, we got a little bit more work we got a little bit more work to do on it, to do on it, but as we usually do, but as we usually do, as soon as we decide as soon as we decide we are going to book them we are going to book them into the countyjail, into the countyjail, and the charges he's going to and the charges he's going to be booked into, be booked into, we'll get those to you we'll get those to you and we'll get a picture of him and we'll get a picture of him and we'll get and we'll get you his background. You his background. We've also heard from we've also heard from vice—president kamala harris. In a short statement, she said that she had been briefed on the incident. She said that she had been briefed on the incide a. She said that she had been briefed on the incide a day lucy, it's been quite a day for law enforcement. So, how did this all get started? let's just sort of go back there. They say that this all started around 1:30pm local time — about 8. 5 hours ago. A secret service agent who is running ahead of the former president, who is golfing at his golf course here, spots a man with a rifle. Officials say that the secret service agent was about two holes ahead of the former president. He spots somebody with a rifle. At that point, the secret service agent engages with the gunman. The suspect. At that point, flees onto the street. He goes through the bushes from the golf course, goes out towards the street, jumps into a vehicle — a black nissan. At that point, somebody — a witness — spots what's happening, he sees the suspect running into a vehicle, so he jots down the licence plate number. This vehicle then speeds away. The witness gives that licence plate number to officials — law enforcement officials — law enforcement officials are then able to track down the suspect, who was in that vehicle. He was fleeing north, according to officials, on amesia highway here, crossing into another jurisdiction, when he was apprehended. At the point when he is apprehended, the witness is then brought to wherever the suspect is, and the witness is then able to identify the suspect. So, officials say that this witness — who jotted down the licence plate number — was absolutely key in being able to capture the suspect. find capture the suspect. And details about _ capture the suspect. And details about ryan capture the suspect. And details about ryan rothl capture the suspect. And details about ryan roth that we're hearing now being widely reported, christian, is that he was known to the authorities? right. So, at this point, cbs news has been able to confirm that he was known to law enforcement. We're still unclear whether that means that he has some sort of criminal record or if he had prior encounters with law enforcement. Sources do tell us that he was known to them. He is 58. At this point, the investigation unfolding, as far as motive — they're looking into that. We'll see where the investigation leads. — investigation leads. Christian, thanks so _ investigation leads. Christian, thanks so much _ investigation leads. Christian, thanks so much for— investigation leads. Christian, thanks so much for that investigation leads. Christian, | thanks so much for that update from west palm beach. I'm joined now by jonathan gilliam, former us navy seal and fbi agent. Very good to have you with us. Firstly, can you explain to our viewers watching around the world why this is now being overseen by the fbi? why does this now become an fbi operation?— this now become an fbi 0 eration? ~ 3 operation? well, when there's an assassination _ operation? well, when there's an assassination attempt operation? well, when there's an assassination attempt and l an assassination attempt and it's officially determined that it's officially determined that it was an assassination attempt against a sitting president, a former president, or a nominee former president, or a nominee for president of one of the parties, the fbi will take over that. They take over that investigation. But what you have eel too realise is, when we use those words like they take over the investigation, the reality is that the fbi works closely with all law enforcement in most of these types of cases. It actually becomes basically a joint task force so they can reach out to not only other fbi officers, but also other law enforcement entities where this individual may have been known. They also work with intelligence agencies to see if any of the information comes back about this individual where he may have been part of a state—sponsored assassination attempt or any type of terrorist group. Attempt or any type of terrorist group. What do you make of the _ terrorist group. What do you make of the evidence terrorist group. What do you make of the evidence that i terrorist group. What do you | make of the evidence that the fbi has got so far? because i've heard it described here in the us as being a gold mine, given we've got the gopro, we've got the gun, we have the car — all sorts of crucial pieces of evidence that the fbi will have already? it’s pieces of evidence that the fbi will have already?— will have already? it's very tellinu. Will have already? it's very telling. And _ will have already? it's very telling. And it's _ will have already? it's very telling. And it's telling will have already? it's very telling. And it's telling on | telling. And it's telling on many different levels. One — the fact — let's look at both the fact — let's look at both the july assassination attempt and this assassination attempt. This is twice that a shooter has been able to get within 500 yards which, for that particular weapon, yards which, for that particularweapon, is yards which, for that particular weapon, is an sks — an ak—47, russian—style ak—lfl — the max effective range is a50 yards, especially with a scope. So trump was estimated to be within a00500 so trump was estimated to be within a00—500 yards of this individual. So, twice now, somebody has been able to get within that distance. That's something that the fbi should take into account, because now it's gone beyond just a simple dropping of the ball of tactics where these threat assessments are not being done properly. The individual himself left what appears to be notjust a backpack, but possibly two ballistic plates that are tied and hung up against that fence, and hung up against that fence, and he had the rifle in between those, which meant that he was ready for a potential shoot—out. He wanted to record it. And then he went to the car and they located the vehicle with him in it, the gopro, if he had any other issues or things that were recorded on there, and his social media. This individual — unlikejuly — has not had his social media scrubbed. So the fbi will be able to look at that and determine who this guy is as far as social media tells, and then hopefully they get his phones and things like that and will be able to scrub those as well to see if he has any other contacts that could be involved. — contacts that could be involved. . ,. ,. , involved. As i was get on the plane, my plane had been delayed several times, so it's a little disconnected from the world. I heard there were shots fired in the vicinity of the president. By the time i landed, it was clear that there had been a second assassination attempt. It's a tragic day. It's very sad for america. This is not who we are. This is not how we handle our political differences with our opponent. I reject the notion that this is going to become a trend in american politics. It can't become a trend. We stand for democracy. We need to get back to debating policy and stop dehumanising one another. The left has called president trump hitler. They have dehumanised him, they have said he's a threat to democracy. What do you do if you feel like someone is really threatening your freedom? we don't know if these are lone crazy people or if it is a state—sponsored terror of some sort, if it's a foreign enemy, a conspiracy. We need the facts. We don't even have details from the last assassination attempt, and now we have a second attempt. We need to know what is going on here. Let's find out a little bit more about the suspect. Looking into that has been our verify team and our news a analysis editor, roz atkins, whojoins us now. What have you managed to find out?— to find out? lucy, good evening _ to find out? lucy, good evening. As _ to find out? lucy, good evening. As you've to find out? lucy, good | evening. As you've been mentioning, our colleagues at cbs have spoken to sources who have indicated that the suspect is called ryan routh. With that name, bbc verify was able to start looking at social media accounts to find accounts that match that name. We have managed to identify several social media accounts with that name. We've then cross—referenced some of the content on those accounts with an image that allegedly shows a man being arrested on the scene on the highway near to donald trump's golf course. If we look at those accounts, a number of themes emerge. First of all, go back to 2020, and there is a post on twitter now called x in which the man directly addresses donald trump and says, i voted for you in 2016, but then says that, we all were greatly disappointed. I will be glad when you're gone, he says in this tweet. That was back in 2020. More recently, a lot of the social media output on these accounts has been around ukraine. We know that the man in these accounts is involved in organising forforeign organising for foreign volunteers to organising forforeign volunteers to go to ukraine to join the fight against russia. He featured — he was quoted — in an article on just that subject in the new york times last seen. Bbc verify has seen a youtube video in which he's in the ukrainian capital, kyiv, talking about the west's approach to ukraine, and particularly about the issue of volunteers coming to ukraine. It's clear in a number of these posts across a number of platforms that he is frustrated about the west's approach to ukraine. He feels that more should be done. So that is coming out again and again. Of course, we have to be cautious about this, because we're still learning details about who this person is. And we don't have a huge amount of confirmed detail from the authorities themselves. However, it is relevant — based on that sourcing from cbs, and based on the research that bbc verify has done — that these themes are coming out from those social media accounts. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Good to have you here on bbc news. I'm lucy hockals in washington dc, as we continue our coverage on the second assassination attempt on the life of donald trump, the former president, in the last few months. Still a huge sense of shock here as people digest this news. Lots of concern about the security surrounding donald trump as well, and also questions that have been raised about what effect this will have on the campaign. Let's talk about some of those issues. Joining me now is matt terrill, republican strategist, and adam hodge, democratic consultant. Matt, firstly to you. Listening to the press conference that was given by those members of the security services — including the secret service in florida — one of the things that was said was, we live in dangerous times now. Almost suggesting that this kind of thing, this kind of political violence, is going to become a new normal here in the us. What would you say to that? i certainly hope, like all americans, that this does not become a new normal here in the us. I'lljust say it's great to see that former president trump was safe and secure today. Certainly, nationwide, we as americans want to make sure that we have safe and secure nominees for presidents, and obviously ensuring that we have a process in place here where our disagreements are decided at the ballot box, not with bullets. It was great to see today former president trump is safe and secure, great that the individual has been detained — obviously it's been reported that he was out there, and almost conducted this horrific act. The bottom line here is that we, as americans, need to come together right now. Certainly we're at a heightened threat, it appears, based on the secret service statements. And that should be very concerning. It's time for all americans to come together and unite, and settle our differences at the ballot box. Adam, do you think we should be seeing some changes, though, to how political leaders are protected? is enough being done to keep them safe? first protected? is enough being done to keep them safe?— to keep them safe? first and foremost. — to keep them safe? first and foremost. Matt, — to keep both candidates safe. Matt, how do you think the trump campaign should handle that particular focus around gun control, and what do you think the narrative should be from here from the campaign about what happened today? well, the trump campaign is taking a stand on those policies. The reality is, we're all grateful to see that former president trump is safe and secure. But the reality is, it's notjust the secure. But the reality is, it's not just the former president who's facing challenges here when it comes to safety and security. There are americans nationwide facing those challenges. We've seen crime go up. We've seen a situation with bullet security in this country. Those are big concerns for americans right now. There is no question that safety and security, crime, border security — those are all big concerns for americans right now. We've seen it in the polling. That's certainly going to be top of mind for voters nationwide head into this election. It'll be up to the campaign to decide what they say, what their policies are on various issues. When it comes to what we saw today, we're grateful former president trump is safe and secure. Certainly it's notjust about is safe and secure. Certainly it's not just about former president trump today — it's about millions of americans nationwide who want to be safe and secure as well in their homes and their communities. Adam, there's been some criticism already that it took president biden some time to respond to this, and then we just got a statement — we haven't seen him in person. Let's show you some of the pictures we've been getting in of the suspect*s home being searched. I'll bring you up to date with some of the details we are getting about the suspect from our partners at cbs news. He is ryan wesley routh, the suspect. He apparently was charged and convicted of several offences in guildford county, north carolina, between 2002 and 2010. This is a law enforcement official telling cbs news these details. These include carrying out a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, a hit—and—run offence, driving with a revoked licence, and possessing stolen property. We'll continue to keep you up to date with this breaking news story. Do stay with us here on bbc news. Hello, there. Well, we've seen plenty of sunshine throughout the weekend, also a few outbreaks of rain for some, but that is the last of the wet weather that we'll see for quite a few days yet, because for much of next week, it's looking dry and settled. High pressure dominant, more sunshine and it will feel warmer by day and milder by night, too. Just watch out for the possibility of some rather murky mornings, with mist and fog patches developing, especially where the winds stay light. Now, here's that area of high pressure building in from the south west. It's centred more or less right over the uk, as we head through monday, deflecting these low—pressure systems out towards the north and the west. Now, as we head into monday morning itself, there'll be some mist and fog, particularly for north—west england, south—west scotland, perhaps. It's milder towards the south with that legacy of cloud for a while, coolest out towards the north and the east, but a whole range of temperatures as we start off the day. Now, the mist and the fog will readily lift and clear as we head through the morning, and there'll be plenty of sunshine around, lots of blue skies. High cloud turning the sunshine hazy at times. More of a breeze out towards the far south and the east. We could see one or two very isolated showers for kent, but it's still unlikely. More cloud for northern ireland later on through the day, and temperatures in the high teens, the low 20s. 21 celsius for parts of central and eastern england — it's close to the seasonal average. And then, on tuesday, well, we could see any mist and fog, really, across parts of yorkshire, lincolnshire, down through the east midlands, more of a north—easterly wind for east anglia, south—east england here, and a bit more in the way of cloud for northwest scotland, but with a southwesterly wind blowing, then, for parts of the moray firth, the highlands, temperatures could reach 21 or 22 celsius, so certainly feeling warm here. Wednesday and thursday, our area of high pressure starts to meander further northwards and eastwards. It's still dry towards the north. Towards the south, we'll see more of an easterly breeze take hold, but it is going to be feeling warm here. Again, there's a more noticeable north—easterly blow. Windy through the channel, perhaps, but 2a celsius in central southern england and south—east england, and again 21 or 22 celsius for those sheltered areas of scotland. So here's the outlook for our capital cities, then, as we head through the week. There's a lot of sunshine around. It's dry and it's settled. We could potentially see a few showers break out on friday. Bye— bye. Voiceover: this is bbc news. We'll have the headlines for you at the top of the hour, which is straight after this programme. Ignition. . . It's the job of dreams. With an out of this world view. Many would love to be an astronaut — but very few make the cut. There you go! the european space agency is pushing boundaries with its latest candidate, john mcfall. Absolutely amazing. This is what it feels like. Woohoo! he's an amputee, and he's taking part in a ground—breaking project to see if someone with a disability can go to space. This project will deliver a very strong message to redefine or define what people's interpretation of what someone with a physical disability can do. Meet the world's first para astronaut, who could open up space for everyone. Chosen from 22,000 applicants after an incredibly tough selection process, these are the european space agency's new astronauts, the brightest and the best. Among them is a candidate who's a first.
