The first so called citizens jury on assisted dying in england has backed a change in the law to allow people who are terminally ill to end their life. The jury of 30 people spent eight weeks listening to Expert Evidence and campaigners, and concluded it should only be an option for those who are terminally ill and have the capacity to make their own decisions. Our medical Editor Fergus Walsh has the details. Away from the placards and the protests, the Citizens Jury was intended to produce a measured response to this highly sensitive issue. Jury members were selected to be representative of the makeup and the views of the population, which meant most were already in favour of assisted dying at the start. By three to one, the jury voted in favour of the law being changed to allow assisted dying for those with a terminal condition who have the capacity to make their own decisions. The lethal drug could be self administered or given by a health professional. Ashok was part of the jury and says they were given time to explore the issue in depth. It was an amazing experience and it was nerve racking. It was sensitive. It was like a mixed emotion to be part of this actually, because it is a very sensitive topic to be deliberated. Ourjury members wanted terminally ill people not to suffer and prolong the agony, and to have the option to choose to die in their own country rather than going abroad to die. A minority ofjurors were concerned that assisted dying could be misused without adequate safeguards. There was near universal support for more funding for Palliative Care. We know that policymakers want to have more evidence about what the public think. They want to understand the richness, the detail of peoples views and understand where, for example, people want to see safeguards and other considerations around, for example, Palliative Care. Opinion polls have consistently shown overwhelming public support for assisted dying in the uk. The prime minister, sir keir starmer, has said hes committed to giving mps a free vote on the issue at some point. Private members bills have already been introduced at westminster and at the scottish parliament, holyrood. The Isle Of Man and jersey, which pass their own laws, are already on track to introduce assisted dying. But throughout the british isles, the impassioned debate on this key issue will continue. Fergus walsh, Bbc News. Lets now speak to Anne Kerr from the Nuffield Council On Bioethics who set up thejury group. Professor, thank you for your time and joining us on Bbc News today. The campaign group, right to life you say these types ofjuries are not always truly representative. Why did this group of people, 28 of the 30 ended up voting, what qualified them to come up with their findings . Thisjury was set them to come up with their findings . This jury was set up in partnership with a number of organisations and the foundation worked with us to go out to a number of households, 7000 households to understand if people like to participate. Then we use demographic data to make sure that we selected a Representative Sample based on things like age, gender and ethnicity. We also did a survey where we surveyed 2000 people and we were then able to look at what their views were and applied that to this as well, so it was a matter of the population. That is important for citizens juries, population. That is important for citizensjuries, that population. That is important for citizens juries, that they are representative of the populations views, people came into the process with those views but they also learned about different perspectives and looked at different evidence and came to a shared set of recommendations on that basis. 205 recommendations on that basis. 20s said to the recommendations on that basis. 205 said to the law should be changed, seven disagreed and one was undecided at The End of this process. What were key points made byjurors process. What were key points made by jurors who process. As did those who were concerned about a change legislation, they also emphasise the importance of safeguards put in place to make sure vulnerable people were not coerced, they highlighted in particular people with Mental Health issues should be protected so that there is no abuse. They stressed the need for investment and Palliative Care and that was of course for those, for those who were against the change in law, it was one of their main concerns. The jury as a whole did important stressed the importance of Palliative Care and also said how much they valued being part of the process and appreciated the opportunity to have the dialogue. They noted there was a lot of taboo on discussing death and dying and that they were able to work together to discuss is really difficult and sensitive issues and come up with the report that we are releasing today. Next, the parents of a little boy who desperately needs a Bowel And Liver transplant are trying to raise awareness of child Organ Donation. Zachary bradford who has undergone 30 surgeries before the age of three needs the transplant within the next few week or he could die. Our Scotland Correspondent Catriona renton went to meet the family at their home near glasgow. Zachary, z a C H a r y. Bradford. Sorry, i got it wrong, i guess zachary was born at 28 weeks after his Bowel Perforated in his mum jades womb. Initiation he now urgently needs a small Bowel And Liver transplant. His Mum And Dad have been telling his story. Were kind of looking at weeks to months, but more so week5. And if zachary takes another 5eptiC Hit or catche5 another infection, then we will be looking at possibly losing him if it comes to that. But youre very strong and youre going to keep fighting, arent you . Zachary had Bowel Surgery when he was born. At the time, doctors said he was the youngest ever to survive this. He had a Liver Transplant last year, but it failed. Hes been diagnosed with liver and intestinalfailure. But hes so small that a new donor would have to be a young child, too. Sadly, now, all thats going to save him is that Liver And Bowel transplant, which isjust, unfortunately, going to need to come from someone, you know, similar to zachary s size. This has to happen, and it has to happen soon. Yeah, there are countless kids in zachary s situation, and it can be anyones kid that ends up needing a transplant like this as well. And we would hope that, um, anyone who would be happy for their kid to receive a transplant would also, um, be willing to do that for another child. And as i say, we dont. We dont. Were not underplaying how big an ask that is. We fully appreciate that. Zachary is one of 259 children in the uk waiting for a transplant. For many like him, their only hope is the parents of another child agreeing to Organ Donation at the most difficult of times. So nobody wants to envisage your child dying. But, its important that you do consider about Organ Donation and not really think about it as as death, but thinking about it as giving life so that if tragedy was to happen to anyone in the family, even children, what you would want to do in those circumstances. Zachary and his Little Brother reuben, who is 20 months old, are the best of friends. The family has goals. His Mum And Dad are hoping to get married soon. It will be zachary S Birthday on the 11th of october. Going to be the big three, yeah . Big three. We always achieve these goals, dont we . We set a goal not too far in advance and we reach for it. Yep, yep. Were going to aim for your birthday and were going to aim for the wedding and christmas. Its all going to happen. Its going to happen because youre 5trong. Jade and reese had met many families waiting and hoping for transplants. Ive gotten to meet so many families. And weve been able to see the difference that its made to their lives and kids who have been similar to zachary, so close to potentially losing their life, receiving that call and never looking back. Youve got big plans, you do. We just need to get that call to come. Catriona renton, Bbc News. An american ultra Endurance Cyclist Yesterday claimed a new World Record as the fastest woman to travel around the globe by bike. This is the moment Lael Wilcox arrived in chicago with her family and friends cheering her on, a 108 days after setting off. She crossed 21 countries on four continents before arriving back in chicago. Herjourney, of more than 29 Thousand kilometres, shaved 16 days off the previous womens record. Earlier i spoke to Lael Wilcox, to see how the muscles are feeling now that she holds the new World Record for circumnavigating the globe. Heres what she had to say. Im feeling so good. Im so excited to be here, and i was just catching up with my wife and doing some emails, and i hear people riding behind me on the street and im looking around thinking, i want to be back out there. So youre full of adrenaline, i guess, and excitement and, you know, the love of cycling. Where did it all begin . Oh, you know, i reallyjust started riding to get to work, then rode across the us, travelling for seven years around the world, and started racing about ten years ago. And doing this trip around the world was really kind of the capstone of everything ive done on the bike, and i had so much fun out there. I invited people from All Over The World to come ride with me, and, uh, it was really hard, but it was such a blast. Lets take a step back, because im trying to understand the psychology. Theres a big difference between hopping on a bike to get to work, a very practical thing, and deciding that youre going to do these Epic Sort Of Adventures and journeys. So what was the Turning Point for you . What made you decide to pursue that . You know, sometimes i feel like its not that different. Youre just out there for a lot longer. And thats kind of the thing i want people to feel, too. Its like if theyre just riding five kilometres to the store, im just doing that, but just longer. But you know that i figured out that this was something i was really good at, something i love to do. At The End of a ten month bike trip, i was in the middle East Riding in israel and entered my first race, and this was in 2015 and i was the only woman. It was another group of 40 men, and by The End of the first day, i was winning the race and i thought, oh my gosh, i didnt know i could do that. And Itjust Kind of kicked the excitement up for me. And then ive spent the last, gosh, i guess, nine years kind of pursuing that and, and just having so much fun. And i think the message from what youve just said is if youve got a big challenge, just try to break it into bite sized chunks and take it in stages. A big question, but if you could pick out one moment from all of this journey that sticks in your mind uppermost, what would that be . Yeah, i mean, coming into the finish, you know, i thats the closest memory i have right now. But really, within three days of getting back to chicago. Ijust had this incredible energy where i was riding so much faster than i had the whole trip, and, and everything just felt like it was coming together, and i just felt so much joy. How do you top that . I mean, whats next . Maybe you havent even begun to think about whats next in terms of your cycling adventures. Yeah, really im just kind of soaking this all up and spending time with my family and just enjoying being outside. Its quite something, isnt it, when you think of that title, the new World Record for circumnavigating the globe on a bicycle, its part of a long tradition of people crossing the globe, setting off on a big adventure. How does it feel to be part of that story . Oh, its unreal. You know, weve been talking about it and i think i went around the world, but it was just one little line around the world. And then theres so many parallel lines and so many more places to go and so many ways to do it. And my trip feels really special because i got to share it with so many other people. But itjust makes me feel more invigorated to keep going. Congratulations to her, quite the achievement. Thats it for me today. Stay with us here on Bbc News. Hello again. Over the past few days and nights, its just been getting that little bit colder each time. Now the coldest night of this week was last night where we had a pinch of frost quite widely, temperatures as low as minus three celsius unusually cold for this early in autumn. But, with the clearer skies last night, well, you got a view of the Northern Lights in many places. The activity is not going to be so strong tonight, plus therell be more clouds, so its going to be more difficult to see tonight. And that cloud will bring some rain over the weekend, but it will be milder air thats heading our way. Now, were replacing that pool of cold air that weve had over the past few days, with South Westerly Winds coming in from the atlantic, lifting the temperatures but bringing cloud and some outbreaks of rain and some stronger winds overnight to Northern Ireland and then pushing eastwards across scotland. Some of The Cloud will arrive in the North And West of england and wales clearer skies in the South East. Temperatures could be as low as 4 or 5 in some rural areas, but its certainly not as cold as it was last night. And, by morning, temperatures in scotland and Northern Ireland could be in double figures. Maybe a little early rain, but we should see a little sunshine breaking through The Cloud for a while ahead of the next band of rain that arrives into the North West during the afternoon. England and wales is looking dry, some clouds, some sunshine. Its not as windy here. And for all of us, temperatures are going to be higher on saturday 17 or 18, scotland and Northern Ireland, for Eastern Parts of england, 19 maybe even 20 celsius. Here weve got High Pressure dominating, keeping it dry. But there is that Weather Front bringing the rain into the North West that will slip slowly southwards into england and wales on sunday. This is where weve got The Cloud and patchy rain to begin with. That should move away from northern england. It may get a Bit Wetter in wales, some pockets of rain into the midlands and south west, but further north the showers in Northern Scotland will move away. Well get more sunshine and its not going to be as windy. Similar sort of temperatures though on sunday, peaking at 20 in the South East of england. Here it should stay dry until The End of the day, and High Pressure is going to be dominant into next week, pushing away all those Weather Fronts, the Rain Areas and the stronger winds to the North West of the uk. So, not too windy away from Southern England where well have a stronger easterly wind, some Mist And Fog patches, not particularly cold at night, and it will be feeling a little bit warmer in the sunshine during the day.
