On September Americas Foreign Policy and what came next in afghanistan and iraq, and all that followed in the years afterwards. But today, all the political leaders traditionally put partisan politics aside, and president ial campaigning certainly gives way to remembrances of that deadly attack on american soil. We will be going back to that in the coming hours as the us marks about. These are live pictures also coming to us from washington from The Pentagon, as you can see again. Families gathered and members of the military gathered in remembrance. We are going to seeJoe Biden and Kamala Harris all day at these commemorations, crucially hearing from the families too. Today, politics is officially paused for the president ial race. But of course, it is only a few hours since that Tv Debate. Less than two months before the us votes, with the polls very close between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the two candidates have met and debated. It was a lively 90 minutes of television, the debate held in the Battleground State of pennsylvania, and now the analysis and the claims of victory will roll out. Topics included the economy, a keyissue topics included the economy, a key issue for voters, abortion and immigration. It was a primetime show down, which often turned personal. Were still waiting for the Opinion Polls to come in, but both candidates and campaigns, of course, claim victory. Moments after the debate, Donald Trump came into the spin room, telling journalists hed won the night but some observers asking whether this was a sign he was worried about his performance. The abc News President ial debate. Here now David Muir and linsey davis. Good evening. Im David Muir and thank you forjoining us for tonights abc News President ial debate not just the first debate for these two as president ial candidates, but the first time these two have ever met. That was about as friendly as it got as they came to debate in philadelphia, the so called city of brotherly love. Not so much. Shes a marxist. Everybody knows shes a marxist. People start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom. But soon they got on to issues such as immigration, a key concern for voters and one that could be a strength for the former president , though he chose to focus on unsubstantiated claims about migrants eating peoples pets. In springfield, theyre eating the dogs, the people that came in. Theyre eating the cats. Theyre eating. The Vice President could scarcely contain herself. Of the people that live there. Moderators attempted to fact check the former president on several occasions during the debate. Abc news did reach out to the City Manager there. He told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community. Well, ive seen people on television. Let me just say here, this is the. People on television say my dog was taken and used for food. He had this to say on the contentious issue of abortion. Will she allow abortion in the eighth month . Ninth month . Seventh month . Come on. 0k. Would you do that . The economy was always going to be a hugely important issue. Its what most americans really care about. She is biden. You know, shes trying to get away from biden. I dont know that. Donald trump attempted to tie Kamala Harris to her boss. Worst Inflation Weve ever had. The Vice President talked about her economic plans, but not perhaps as much as her supporters would have liked. On international affairs, though, she was scathing. World leaders are laughing at Donald Trump. I have talked with military leaders, some of whom worked with you, and they say youre a disgrace. Donald trump hit back by attacking the chaotic withdrawal of american troops from afghanistan, and again claimed the ukraine War Wouldnt have happened under him. Were playing with World War iii, and we have a president that we dont even know if hes. Where is our president . Moments after the end of the debate, Donald Trump himself appearing in the spin room, talking to a whole pack of journalists, hundreds ofjournalists, a sign that he thinks this did not go well. Gary odonoghue, bbc news, philadelphia. Our North America Correspondent Nada Tawfik has the latest reaction from the us. I think that comment from Donald Trump is a real sign that he feels he didnt do as well as Kamala Harris in the debate Last Night. We also heard from his running mate, jd vance, suggesting that Kamala Harris just put forward platitudes and slogans but there was no real substance. And again, trying to tie her toJoe Biden, saying if she was going to do all of the things she said, why didnt she do it already . What We Saw, i think, in reaction, was a real sense that Kamala Harris was in control of the debate Last Night. She was setting the tone of the conversation from even before a word was spoken, with that initial gesture to go to his side of the stage and to shake his hand and to introduce herself. And then from there, We Saw her pushing many of Donald Trumps well known buttons. And each time, he took the bait, whether it was needling him on the size of his rallies, his refusal to concede that he lost the 2020 election, or the many court cases he is still facing, including a conviction, of course, and one of the criminal cases in New York. Donald trump really took that bait and often kind of relitigated his record rather than speaking about his policies moving forward. But again, A Real Effort by Donald Trump to try to say that Kamala Harris was not going to be any different from Joe Biden. Really speaking directly to his base. And obviously everyone is watching the polls because the race is so tight, especially in the Battleground States. Any idea when we might get some sense of reaction there from the pollsters . Look, you know, Kamala Harris, when she became the nominee officially afterJoe Biden left the race, she saw a really big bump in polling. There was renewed excitement recently. Weve seen that excitement slowly tail off the so called harris honeymoon. Questions about how long that would last. Clearly, Kamala Harriss campaign is now hoping she will get another bump off of this debate. Well see if that is in fact the case. But i think everyone understands that, right down to election day, and also, lets not forget that early voting begins next week in some states, that this is going to be an incredibly tight race, that nobody is going to be able to guess how this is going to go. And so, because of that, it is always the discussion around those moderate, independent swing voters, voters in the key Battleground States. And i think its important to note that Kamala Harris spoke directly to those voters, perhaps more so than Donald Trump did. She talked about how she was a proud Gun Owner alongside her running mate, really trying to hit back at Donald Trumps suggestion that she would take away Gun Rights and that effort to kind of paint her as too far to the left. She defended her reversals on things like allowing fracking in the united states or supporting a bipartisan Border Bill that was tougher on immigration. Clearly, understanding that is a concern for americans across the country. So A Real Effort to repaint herself as a moderate as she introduced herself to the nation and one of the largest audiences. I asked about a couple of lines that came out from Donald Trump earlier on a Fox Interview where he said that the Tv Debate had been rigged. He also said that he thought there would be consequences for the fans, with the fans of Taylor Swift endorsing Kamala Harris. So, who won the debate . I spoke to democratic Strategist Mary Anne Marsh And Partner at Brunswick Group and former republican strategist robert moran, and i asked them who they thought came out on top. Kamala harris had the most, the greatest opportunity to benefit Last Night, and she made the most of this debate opportunity. The fact that Donald Trump had to go into the spin room. If youve worked on campaigns, your candidate only goes in when they know theyve failed, that theyve had trouble, that he went in to try to tell people the press and others dont believe what your eyes just saw for the last two hours. Im telling you, i won the debate. And that clearly wasnt true. Versus Kamala Harris, who let her Performance Speak for itself and then went on to ask for a second debate. So, Kamala Harris came out the winner Last Night. She was not only president ial and his equal, she was superior to Donald Trump. Robert moran, whats your take on this . Do you think this whole election is going to be a referendum on Donald Trump, effectively . Well, i think that harris won the debate Last Night. However, theres nothing that i saw Last Night that suggests to me that it knocks us out of the fundamentals of the race. The fundamentals of the race are that it is a wrong track election, that people are concerned about the economy, that harris is the functional incumbent here, and i think the race will settle back into what were weve seen. Harris appears to have peaked in the polling last week. And now she appears to lead nationally by about 1. 1 , which is about one and a half points below where Hillary Clinton was at this moment in time. So i suspect that we will see a tightening race. And if the New York times survey is correct and Donald Trump is marginally ahead nationally, that would put him ahead in most of the swing states. Robert moran and mary and march. If you want to hear more analysis on the president ial debate, you can listen to a special episode of americast, which is available on bbc sounds now. The us Secretary Of State Antony Blinken and the uk foreign Secretary David Lammy are in kyiv, on a joint visit. It is a show of support for the country, and the men will discuss Ukraines Request to use long range us and british missiles against russia. Ukraines President Zelensky has repeatedly asked for permission to strike deep into russian territory, saying his forces were fighting with their arms tied. In recent days, ukraine has been stepping up its Drone Assault on russia, including the capital, moscow. But talk of more powerful weapons has sparked concern by russian leaders. State media reports deputy foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying russia will destroy any new deliveries of long range missiles to ukraine by the united states. He said any delivery would increase the dangers and risks. And the kremlin has dismissed reports iran had shipped missiles to russia, saying claims about various arms transfers were baseless. Antony blinken said on tuesday that russia had received ballistic missiles from iran and would likely use them in ukraine within weeks. Our Europe Correspondent Nick beake is in kyiv and told us what we can expect from the visit of the two leaders. We know already that the two visitors have met the ukrainian Prime Minister. So both Mr Blinken and Mr Lammy went straight into that meeting. And we know the ukrainian Prime Minister thanked both america and the United America and the uk for their ongoing support. But he did raise this issue of long range missiles. And you can be absolutely sure that President Zelenskyy will be continuing that theme in their conversations later today. Specifically, the ukrainians are saying to the british and the americans, you need to give us permission to use these long range missiles so we can hit further into russia, much further so that we can target the airfields and, crucially, strike the russian bombers before they take off and before they let go of these devastating bombs and missiles that have been hitting so many towns and cities in this country. Nick speak there. The Uk Government has announced a public inquiry into one of the most controversial murders during the conflict in Northern Ireland. The solicitor Pat Finucane was shot dead by Loyalist Paramilitaries in belfast in 1989 while he was having Sunday Dinner with his wife and children. Previous investigations have found there was evidence of State Collusion in the killing. Ands Prime Minister Simon Harris said this signalled a new approach by the Uk Government to Legacy Issues in Northern Ireland. Irelands Prime Minister said this signalled a new approach. Palestinian paramedics say at least five people have been killed in an israeli Military Operation in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli Military said it was carrying out what it called a Counter Terrorism Operation in the area and struck an armed Terrorist Cell. The Palestinian Red Crescent said a drone had been used. Its just days after the largest israeli Military Operation in the West Bank since the hamas attacks on october the 7th. Our correspondent Daniel De Simone has more from jerusalem. This took place overnight, and palestinian paramedics from the Palestinian Red Crescent have said that five people were killed. Palestinian social media and media are describing them as all males and naming them. The Palestinian Red Crescent said it recovered their bodies and took them to hospital, and it said they were killed in what it described as a drone strike. The Israeli Military, the israeli defense forces, confirmed that it conducted an operation overnight. It said it was a Counter Terrorism Operation and it said it had struck, with an aircraft, a Terrorist Cell an armed Terrorist Cell. This all comes within the context of this larger series of operations that have been taking place over the last few days in the West Bank, which is really the largest operation, israeli operation, in the West Bank, in the occupied West Bank since the October 7th attacks last year by hamas. And a previous statement by the palestinian Health Ministry said that 39 palestinians, including some children, had died in in this West Bank operation. Given that five people are said to have died overnight, that number may rise. And elsewhere in the West Bank today, there was whats been described as a Ramming Attack with a tanker. With a van. Theres video of this incident thats being played in the israeli media. It shows a Bus Stop near a jewish settlement in the West Bank and a Tanker Veering into it, hitting it. And whats been described here is that a 20 year Old Man was very, very seriously injured as part of that. Its also described that the person who was driving the vehicle has been said to be a 58 year old palestinian man, and hes been described as having been neutralised at the scene. 0k. And in a separate incident, the idf says one of its helicopters crashed in gaza. What more can you tell us on that . So, this also is something that happened overnight. The israeli defense forces announced this morning that one of its helicopters was on an operation to evacuate an injured soldier, and that the helicopter crashed Near Rafah in the gaza strip, killing two soldiers and that seven more soldiers were injured, five of them severely. The idf says that current indications are that this did not happen as a result of what it calls enemy fire, but the actual cause of the crash is still unknown, and a formal investigation has begun into the circumstances of the incident. In many parts of the world, sons are still more highly prized than daughters. This can lead to Sex Selective Abortion, abandonment of Baby Girls, or even infanticide. A new documentary from Bbc Eye investigations explores the disturbing history of female infanticide in one part of rural india. Over the course of 30 years, Amitabh Parashar interviewed midwives in the eastern state of bihar to find out why they were being told to murder newborn Baby Girls and how some of them turned from killers into saviours. A warning this report contains some upsetting scenes. The woman confessing to killing newborn Baby Girls is a midwife. I shot this footage nearly 30 years ago in the state of bihar in eastern india. What i found then still shocks me. In total, four midwives spoke to me on camera about killing newborn babies. Most of these midwives gave the same explanation for why Baby Girls were being murdered. The Dowry System is an age old tradition, where the Brides Family is expected to give gifts like cash, jewellery or clothes to the groom. In many families, it can turn sons into assets and daughters into liabilities. I was not the only one disturbed by these killings. In the 90s, Anila Kumari ran an ngo that educated midwives against infanticide. The midwives saved at least five Baby Girls and brought them to anila. One child died, but four were put up for adoption. It took a while, but eventually i tracked down a girl named monica, who in all probability is one of the rescued children. I wanted to bring Monica And Anita together. I landed up in an orphanage. So definitely, i would like to meet. Today, infanticide is rare, but the illegal practice of Sex Selective Abortion still persists in parts of india. For anila and monica, their reunion was a blessing neither had expected, a testament that lives can be saved when harmful practices are confronted. You can watch the full Bbc World Service documentary the Midwifes Confession on Bbc Iplayer if youre in the uk or on the World Service Youtube Channel outside the uk. Just take you back to the us and New York, it is 23 years since the 9 11 attacks. We are bringing you images from the commemorations that happen annually, with the Family Members reading out the names of those we have lost, nearly 3000 people were killed in those attacks. Of course, all the political leaders are gathered there today when partisan politics are traditionally put to one side. You can see president Joe Biden and Donald Trump there gathered. Earlier, We Saw Donald Trump and Kamala Harris shake each other s hands as they stood close together in a Line Up as they gathered for this incredibly important memorial. They werejoined by jd memorial. They werejoined by jd vance, mike bloomberg, chuck schumer, rudy giuliani, the political leaders in New York and the us. As the us remembers 91123 years on. Remembers 9 1123 91123 years on. Remembers 9 11 23 years on. Hello there. Its been very wet today here in merseyside and through the cheshire plains. Frequent and heavy showers have been blown in. Weve got low pressure between us and scandinavia, and thats feeding in this very showery air stream, cold and gusty northwesterly winds. But you can trace the winds all the way back to the north towards the arctic circle, which is why weve got temperatures this afternoon around 3 or 4 degrees below the average for the time of year. And in the southeast of england, its quite a bit chillier than it was during yesterday. The winds arent quite as strong today. Theres still some strong and gusty northwesterly winds, especially where we have the showers, and there will be more showers through the afternoon and into the evening. But overnight, as the Winds Drop and it gets a bit colder, the showers retreat back towards windward coasts and many places will become dry and clear. And of course its going to be cold as well. Temperatures maybe a little lower than they were Last Night, and not far from freezing in Scotland And North east england, but many places will start quite sunny. Weve got the showers from the word go in northern scotland, Northern Ireland into wales, perhaps the far southwest and along North Sea coasts. There will be showers developing inland during the day. Probably not quite as many as today. Not as heavy as today either, and the winds wont be as strong too. But those temperatures arent changing very much just yet. 13 to 15 degrees once again. So, weve got Cold Air in place. And ahead of this Weather Front coming in from the atlantic, High Pressure will build across the uk on Thursday Night into friday morning, meaning the winds will be lighter. Skies will be clear and temperatures will be close to freezing for many parts of the country. There is a risk of a touch of frost. And weve got a sunny start for many places on friday, but there is that Weather Front coming in from the atlantic that will bring in more cloud. It will bring some rain to Northern Ireland and western scotland. And with that cloud coming in over the cold start, temperatures arent going to rise too high. But it will be a little less cold for england and wales. Here weve got higher pressure as we head towards the weekend. This Weather Front will move down across the country. As it does so, it will tend to weaken. But i think on saturday for Scotland And Northern ireland, weve got a spell of wetter and windy weather ireland, weve got a spell of wetter and windier weather before things improve for the second half of the weekend. But very little, if any, rain coming into england and wales. And for all of us, the temperatures will be higher than at the moment. Live from New York at the opening bell, this is business today.
