17 students remain missing. Boeings Starliner Capsule returns to earth but without its crew, who will stay in the international Space Station until february. Hello. Its five years since a british Prime Minister visited the Republic Of Ireland, after tensions over brexit, but Sir Keir Starmer is in dublin, saying the moment is right for a meaningful reset in relations. Hes been holding talks with his opposite number Simon Harris. Our Ireland CorrespondentSara Girvin reports. After years of strained relations, this was the moment Sir Keir Starmer was given 100,000 welcomes to dublin. Smiles and handshakes as he and his irish counterpart were presented with Football Jerseys ahead of the Republic Of Ireland versus England Game theyre watching this evening. This will be proudly worn in north london. Both leaders said this was an opportunity to renew and deepen the friendship between britain and ireland. I know as two new leaders of our respective countries, we both said we wish to place British Irish Relations on a new path. I really appreciate the time you have given since taking office. Its really important to me, to my government, and i think it is the moment for reset, and its the moment we put meaning behind those words. International matters took Centre Stage following a Round Table Business discussion. We have to be clear in the face of russian aggression, we have to stand together and co ordinate, stand with our allies and give ukraine all the support it needs, for as long as it needs. Photo opportunities are one thing, but the taoiseach and Prime Minister will need to decide whether the reset in their relationship looks like. Symbolism is important, but moving forward, they need to deliver substance over style. And there have already been announcements. A yearly summit between the countries addressing trade, security, justice and climate. Both governments came to send a message that, when it comes to the relationship between britain and ireland, this is a new ball game. 0ur political Correspondent Leila Nathoo told me more of what prime Minister Starmer has been discussing with laura kuenssberg. Its a familiar refrain to blame the refrain to blame the conservative government across the board for things the Labour Party has inherited. But this report he is referring to, the report by Lord Darzi, it was commissioned pretty much instantly after labour took power. A broad ranging investigation into the nhs, looking at access to health care, the quality of health care, the overall performance of the nhs and inequalities surrounding those three areas. The idea is it will be published on thursday, and it informs a longer term ten Year Plan all about Labours Idea of fixing the foundations. They have an immediate plan to reduce the Waiting Lists, bring 40,000 more appointments to the nhs, looking people to the nhs, booking people on evenings and weekends, but in the longer term they want to do something different with the nhs, to structurally change it, and that is where you hear this idea, reflecting on the reforms under the conservative Health Secretary andrew lansley, under the coalition government. I think its a familiar narrative now from Keir Starmer about what hes inherited, and that is certainly the case for the nhs. When it comes to the report which comes out on thursday, its found some really difficult findings, especially in the care for children and young people. Yeah, we have a hint of some of the findings, as you say, relating to children, expecting Lord Darzi to reveal that children are being let down by waiting more than six hours in Accident And Emergency departments in england last year. Talking about Waiting Lists for children, and falling vaccination rates. So you can get a sense from those initial findings that we have access to at the moment of the range of issues Lord Darzi is looking into. Keir starmer is saying, look, we have this initial strategy to free up appointments and bring in new slots for people to get treatment quicker, but in his words, we have to do the hard yards of reform as well, and that is where this independent review by a former labour mp Lord Darzi comes into it. And viewers in the uk can watch the full interview with the prime Minister Tomorrow at 9am on bbc one, the News Channel and the bbc iplayer. A rare event took Place Today in london when richard moore, the head of mi6, and Cia DirectorWilliam Burns have appeared in public together for the first time at a Security Conference in london. Mr burns, who has been central to efforts to reach a ceasefire in the middle east, said the us was working with other mediators to refine the existing framework for a deal. Also discussed, ukraines seizure of the russian territory in kursk, which was described as a significant tactical achievement. Lets have a listen. Its absolutely critical that we do sustain our support to ukraine. And its really difficult. Its hard. And particularly in eastern ukraine, this is attritional warfare where there is a huge amount of suffering on both sides. And putin is pushing forward in a sort of attritional pyrrhic Campaign Of Taking Village by village as he goes forward. When he takes those, theres nothing left. And thats why i used, deliberately used the term pyrrhic. There is nothing left because everything is utterly destroyed. But that is the Kremlin Way of war. Thats what they did in grozny. Its what they did in aleppo. And its what theyre now doing in here. So it is tough, but its also important to remember that our ukrainian friends have an absolute will to fight. And its important to remember how this started. It started in this phase with putin mounting a War Of Aggression in february 2022, and two and a half years later, that failed. It continues to fail. Ukrainians will continue to fight. We will continue to help them to fight. We have to all remember that despite all of that work that needs to be done, this is ultimately a question of political will. And this gets to your question whether or not leaders on both sides are prepared to recognise that enough is enough, and that the time has come, finally, to make some hard choices and some difficult compromises. I hope, i hope profoundly, that both of those leaders are going to make that decision because, as i said, theres an enormous amount at stake here. Lets speak to daniel lomas, assistant professor at the school of politics and international relations at the university of nottingham. Dan specialises in the history, past, present, and future of the Uk Intelligence and security community. What is this messaging we are seeing from these two heads, arguably rarely appear in public, nevertogether, arguably rarely appear in public, never together, and yet here they are . Its public, never together, and yet here they are . Here they are . Its important to see a joint here they are . Its important to see a joint front here they are . Its important to see a joint front between. To see a joint front between the two Top Uk and us spy chiefs. The message they are giving off is one that is fact based, we do face in the west and existential threat from countries like china, obviously with russia and the invasion of ukraine, and i think it was an uncompromising message. Parts of the message they were delivering, quite pessimistic in some sense. For those in the west who believe putin is suddenly going to collapse, the essential message from both was that no significant cracks have emerged within the kremlin itself. This was a tough, uncompromising picture they were painting, essentially talking about power and the situation at the moment, the West And Security situation we face. ,. West and Security Situation we face. ,. ,. , ~ West And Security situation we face. ,. ,. West and Security Situation we face. , face. Its a bleak picture they offer. Face. Its a bleak picture they offer when face. Its a bleak picture they offer. When it face. Its a bleak picture they offer. When it comes face. Its a bleak picture they offer. When it comes to face. Its a bleak picture they i offer. When it comes to russia, they said they had been warning ukraine ahead of that full Scale Invasion in february 2022. The kind of Working Thes they are now doing in order to warn the rest of the population, is it alarming . Are we to take this as beneficial for the international community, for lay People Like Us to hear this . Us to hear this . What we are seeinu us to hear this . What we are seeing is. Us to hear this . What we are seeing is. Yes. Us to hear this . What we are seeing is, yes, this us to hear this . What we are seeing is, yes, this is us to hear this . What we are seeing is, yes, this is a seeing is, yes, this is a significant moment. Its the first time the head of mi6 and the cia have spoken in person in a public setting. It is part of a broader package of briefings by Senior Western intelligence officials on the situation both in ukraine and the Security Situation more broadly. Its part of a broader picture. In terms of the messaging, and why they are doing it, when we are looking for example at polling in the uk and the us, it could be argued that senior officials are seen as more trusted, lets say, to deliver some of these key lines than some of the politicians out there. So this message and the people delivering the message is one of fact based, intelligence led, shaped by the Information Western intelligence agencies themselves are collecting. This is a continuation, really. You mentioned ukraine. This is really a continuation of that process that was happening before the invasion, where we were classifying and releasing small bits of intelligence in a public setting. Both in part as reassurance that, yes, the west is doing something about the threat posed by russia, china and others out there. But also again to act as a warning that we need to be vigilant within the west. These statements are being made at the time when support than ukraine war remains relatively high in the west, but in terms of the news cycle, it is slipping off the front pages here. Trying to bolster this image that ukraine is fighting russia and its a story that needs to continue to be in the headlines. Be in the headlines. Daniel, thank you be in the headlines. Daniel, thank you very be in the headlines. Daniel, thank you very much. Be in the headlines. Daniel, thank you very much. The i be in the headlines. Daniel,. Thank you very much. The head of the cia was touching upon what is happening in the middle east, so lets get an update on that. The families of hostages have come together with anti government protesters in Tel Aviv for a rally calling on Israels Government to bring the hostages home and seal the deal. Relatives of hostages have taken their criticism of prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the stage, saying he appears willing to sacrifice hostage lives for his political survival. Several people calling for him to be removed from office. Tens of thousands of Left Wing protesters have demonstrated in paris and other french towns and cities against the appointment of Michel Barnier as the countrys new Prime Minister. President macron gave him the post on thursday, ending two months of deadlock following inconclusive parliamentary elections. Mr barnier spent Saturday Afternoon visiting a Childrens Hospital in paris. He was asked about the protests. Translation i dont want to | waste time with controversies. I hear words like power grab, that is not the spirit were after here. The spirit is to bring together as many mps as possible for a government of action, with a project and with a Project And Spirit of cooperation. Its not about a power grab, and well see that those mps who express their views and give us their confidence will be a very important part of an assembly that is very divided. But i repeat, i do not want to get into controversy. Earlier, our Paris CorrespondentHugh Schofield explains the drive behind the protests. I wouldnt say he is a controversialfigure but his nomination is controversial, thats for sure. He is a fairly consensual figure, not an extremist by any means, he is from the centre right, but the fact he is macrons nominee, he is from the centre right, and the left have been protesting today, they are absolutely furious because they thought they won the election. They had the biggest number of seats in parliament, so they think it should be them who have the first choice to form a government. Their nominee should be Prime Minister. Macron had said no, the constitution says that he can choose. If he named a Left WingPrime Minister, there is no way that person would have survived a vote of confidence in parliament. Whereas with Michel Barnier, there is a chance he would would survive that vote of confidence in parliament. Thats because we think the populists and marine Le Pen for the moment will put up with him and wont vote him out. Michel barnier is in a precarious position but hes holding on, and that has incensed the left and brought them onto the street today. Boeings Starliner Spacecraft has returned to earth from the international Space Station, but without the astronauts who were meant to be on board. The capsule suffered technical problems after it launched, making it too risky for the pair to return until next year. Instead of spending eight days in space, theyll now end up spending eight Months 0ur Science editor Rebecca Morelle has the story. Mission Control Starliner is now backing away from station and starting its return to earth. Boeings Starliner Capsule on its way home, beginning its six Hour Voyage with a blast of its engines. And youre seeing the Light Show there on your screen. But the spacecraft is empty, without the astronauts it was supposed to carry. Nasas Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore will now stay on the international Space Station. Technical problems with starliner meant nasa said it wasnt safe enough to take the pair home. Suni williams spoke to Mission Control as the spacecraft, which she nicknamed calypso, departed. It is time to bring calypso home. We have your backs and youve got this. Bring her back to earth. Good luck. Picking up starliner now from its lower altitude, about 6,000 feet above. In the Night Sky of new mexico, a first glimpse of the capsule. Three good parachutes. Looking great. Its descent is slowed as it closes in. Touchdown. Starliner is back on earth. The landings a success, but its a bittersweet moment for the mission team. From a human perspective, All Of Us feel happy about the successful landing. But then theres a piece of us, All Of Us, that we wish it would have been the way we had planned it. We had planned to have the Mission Land with. Butch and suni on board. The astronauts are to remain in space until february next year, their eight Day Mission extended to eight months. But nasa says theyre in good spirits, settling into life on the Space Station and taking in its spectacular views. The kenyan government says that more than 17 students remain missing, after a fire at a school. At least 21 people died when the blaze swept through a dormitory in the central county of nyeri. Officials say Dna Tests need to be carried out to identify some of the bodies. But theyve been able to establish that 139 other students have now been accounted for. 0ur CorrespondentBarbara Plett Usher has the latest on the search from nyeri, where the school is located. Efforts are continuing to trace the children who are still missing. It is thought that some parents may have picked up their children without reporting it. It has also been suggested that some children may have taken refuge with members of the community who came to try and help put out the fire. We spoke to one woman at the school who said she had been attending a late Night Vigil at a church nearby, and the congregation heard the screams from the school and some of them went there and found out what was going on, so you can imagine the chaos there. She also said, though, that she had not been able to find her 11 year old nephew, the family had checked at the various hospitals, and they were very afraid that his body might be one of those that had not been able to be identified, because thats another thing thats going on, the Dna Testing of the remains that have been too burnt to be recognised. And there is also an investigation into why this happened, we dont know what the cause of it was. The president has promised a thorough investigation. It is true that fires at schools are common in kenya over the past years for various reasons, one of them would be poor safety standards, overcrowding. Another would be arson, some of the fires have been attributed to students who lit them themselves, sometimes because they are angry at the teachers, sometimes at the workload or the living conditions, so those are the reasons schools have burnt in the past but we dont know what happened here and that is very much a focus of what is going on now, alongside those efforts, of course, to try to find the children who are still unaccounted for. Police searching for a british man believed to have been swept away by Flash Floods in majorca say they have found a body. It comes after a british woman was found dead in the popular Tourist Destination earlier this week. Spains Civil Guard said the pair had been hiking on a Trailfrom A Canyon to the Mediterranean Sea when they went missing after a Storm Hit the island on tuesday. Rescuers had been searching the Torrente De Pareis Canyon area in the Tramuntana Mountain Range since wednesday. The most powerful storm in asia this year, super typhoon yagi, is now causing damage to northern vietnam. The Storm Uprooted Trees and lifted roofs from buildings. Roads and airports have been closed, and residents have been told to stay at home. Earlier, yagi brought devastation to the chinese island of hainan, where four people were killed and left 800,000 without power. There have been tense scenes in the centre of glasgow, with Rival Demonstrations facing off against Each Other across george square. 2,000 people are reported to havejoined a stand up to racism rally. 0n the other side of the square, a smaller, anti immigration protest took place. Both groups shouted and chanted at Each Other. There were some scuffles, when a group of men wearing masks arrived and tried to join the anti racism protest, with police trying to keep them away. Police officers had also erected barriers to keep the Rival Demonstrations apart. 0ur Scotland Correspondent Catriona renton gave us this update. Earlier today, there was a Pro Uk Anti Immigration Protest that was advertised back injuly, around the time of the demonstrations in england and Northern Ireland. It was promoted by the far right Activist Tommy Robinson on social media. A Counter Protest was organised in response to that for today by stand up to racism. Both events took place simultaneously at the other ends of george square, separated by the police. This was the largest type of this sort of event in scotland since the demonstrations in england and Northern Ireland. The anti immigration protest was vastly outnumbered by the anti racism demonstration. It s estimated there were around 2000 3000 people here earlier at the anti racism rally, and about 300 1100 at the other. It was noisy with angry exchanges between the groups. A group of masked Football Supporters were contained by police. They were later released. I have to stress, apart from a couple of brief flashpoints, it was trouble free. Two arrests in the vicinity of george square. A Ao YearOld Man was arrested for a hate crime. A 20 year Old Man was arrested for carrying an offensive weapon. It s fair to say there has not been the trouble seen at demonstrations in parts of england and Northern Ireland earlier this year. People have dispersed now and there have been no major incidents. The bbc is staging its Radio 2 In The Park this weekend in preston, in the North West of england. There are live performances from some of the world s most loved pop stars. Earlier my Colleague LolaSchroerjoined Me from preston. Hello, i am at Bbc Radio 2 in the park in preston. You might be able to hear Snow Patrol on the main stayed behind me. The headliners include sting, sugababes and the Pet Shop boys, but Craig David also graced the main stage a little while ago and i managed to have a chat with him. Let s re rewind to that. I loved it, because It Tees you up for the chill on the sunday. When you see the crowd responding the way they did to the songs. It hit my heart, as soon as i heard them screaming as i walked onto the stage, and all of the songs landed, and finishing on seven days was beautiful. We managed to hear that and it was beautiful. Everyone knows the song so it s always a great moment. Earlier this year with Wes Nelson you brought out abracadabra, how has it been playing that . I love it, because the timing was perfect of that song coming out. We got to perform it for the all Star Love Island show, it was a big moment for the song, and a lovely juxtaposition of having wes being an artist in his own right and us having this collaboration. It was one of the most Fun Times Doing promo together, it was like being out with a mate, and we got to perform at all different things. It was a joy to be with him, hes a really lovely guy, and very talented. You have an arena tour, the Commitment Tour next year, what can we expect . Yeah, every time i heararena tour, its like, wow. It s a big deal. It reminds me of when i was the kid who came from southampton, and i get the same butterflies. I have the full band and my set bringing them together as one show, its going to be amazing. Lots of new music. What is the new single called . In your hands, it drops on september 27. Its an exciting song, because its something i have been holding onto for a while, its been in my hands for quite a while. Ijust had to find the right moment to release it. It touches on a very well known melody, hes got the whole world in his hands. A melody so well known, i was like, i want tojust change one word to say, youve got the whole world in your hands, because then it opens it up across all genres, all demographics, all faiths, it becomes something very different. I wanted to make sure i landed the different parts of the story. Talking about faith and intuition, leaving it and finding it again. I wanted to make it empowerment. To see Everyone Singing The Second Chorus told me it hit the right pocket. Lots more on the website. Stay with Bbc News. Hello there, this mixed pattern continuing through the weekend. We have a thundery low sitting to the south of the uk, it will continue to push north tonight bringing Heavy Rain and may thunderstorms for some. And maybe thunderstorms for some. It will stay drier across scotland and Northern Ireland. The low starting to push northwards into this evening and overnight, sending a band of rain northwards, it will be heavy and thundery in places. It will continue to journey across the midlands into northern and eastern england and wales as the night progresses. In the middle of the low, we could see clearer spells for a time across the midlands and South East, but thundery showers may return to the South East by dawn. Scotland, Northern Ireland, a much quieter night with clear skies. Low Cloud And Mist hugging the north sea coast. Temperatures for most of us in the low to mid teens. On sunday, it could be thundery across england and wales, Heavy Rain in northern and eastern england, into western england and wales. Elsewhere, lots of sunshine, setting off some slow moving thundery downpours into the afternoon. Scotland, cloudier but still some sunshine, the same in Northern Ireland. Not as warm generally, the high teens and low 20s. It could be wet and cool and bleezy for the great North Run across North East England on sunday. Might be better for many people competing. Into the evening and overnight, it looks like the rain which has pushed northwards will return eastwards again. Some of it will be heavy across the north east, but lighter further south. Clearer skies in scotland and Northern Ireland, turning cooler, a fresher night for england, wales and southern scotland, but still a lot of cloud. On monday, the area of low pressure pulls out into the near continent, taking the Weather Front with it. The breeze, The Cloud and the rain slowly easing for eastern areas, brighter skies. Scotland and Northern Ireland seeing another Weather Front moving in, another low Pressure System bringing rain later in the day. Temperatures on the lower side, we have lost the humidity, in the high teens. Temperatures coming down even more into the week, we open the floodgates to an arctic northerly. After near record breaking early september temperatures, we go below the seasonal norm this upcoming week, it ll feel chilly by day and night. This is Bbc News the headlines. Sir Keir Starmer has been holding talks with the irish Prime MinisterSimon Harris in dublin. Both men have stressed that the meeting is an opportunity to re set the relationship between the uk and the Republic Of Ireland which has been strained since britain left the eu. In his first major interview since becoming pm Sir Keir Starmer has told the bbc the previous government broke the nhs in ways which were unforgiveable. He said a review of the Health Service to be published this coming week finds the conservatives changes to the nhs were hopelessly misconceived. The heads of the uk and us foreign intelligence services have warned that the international World Order is under threat in a way we Haven T seen since the cold war. The chiefs of mi6 and the cia also said both countries resisted vladimir putin s War Of Aggression in ukraine. Now on Bbc News, it s sportsday
