Barnier as Prime Minister. Sir Keir Starmer has become the first british Prime Minister to visit the republic of ireland in five years. Downing street says saturdays visit Marks A new era of Co Operation and friendship between britain and ireland with london looking to continue a reset of damaged relations with European Union nations after brexit. The Prime Minister met with Simon Harris, who was only elected taioseach in april just three months before his british counterpart so both are relatviely new to their roles. Sir keir and Mr Harris swapped Football Shirts ahead of their talks before attending the Nations League Match between the republic of ireland and england in a few hours time at the Aviva StadiunIn Dublin. The two leaders are currently holding their Face To face talks but before they moved away from the gathered journalists, they spoke to the media. Today we are here In Dublin to probably try to flesh out what a reset actually looks like, and what it looks like in a practical sense for our citizens on both islands, and i certainly know that it has to be embedded in things like peace, prosperity, mutual respect and friendship, and i am really looking forward to having an opportunity to discuss that with you today. I know also our most solemn duty as leaders of our respective governments is our distinct roles as co guarantors of the peace process, something we both take extremely seriously, and there is much work to be done there to really harness the full potential of the gift that was given to us by the last generation, the most incredible gift of the Peace Agreement as well, and i look forward to seeing how we can work together on that. I am still only eight, going on nine weeks into office and i think for us to be having our second meeting at this level in those few weeks shows a real intention on both our parts to reset this relationship. Renew this relationship, deepen it, and that will be of great benefits to ireland and great benefit to the united kingdom, so thank you very much for finding the time and hosting me with such a welcome here today. Lets speak to our Ireland Correspondent sara girvin. Warm words about key phrases. They know they have to deliver rather than just speak. Rather than ust speak. Those are rather than ust speak. Those words rather than just speak. Those are words we rather than just speak. Those are words we have rather than just speak. Those are words we have heard rather than just speak. Those l are words we have heard again and again of the past couple of weeks, reset, renew about the relationship between britain and the republic of ireland. Just in the last few moments we know a roundtable discussion, Business Discussion that was going on with Industry Leaders has just wrapped going on with Industry Leaders hasjust wrapped up. We heard a flavour there of water Sir Keir Starmer had to say and his irish counterpart Simon Harris. He said he wanted to flesh out what a reset in the relationship looks like but it must be embedded in peace, prosperity, mutual respect and friendship. Today has felt light hearted. As you said, a lot of smiles, Football Match between england and republic of ireland, Simon Harris it is important to be honest with her friends, a relationship may be strained later this evening at the match, another interesting line we have just heard from both leaders, the announcement of a summit every year to take place between the republic of ireland and britain. Both those countries will meet now it on a yearly basis. Sir Keir Starmer said the first one would be in march, discussing trade, business, security, justice and climate. Rumoured but now confirmed by both leaders today, another sign as you say of delivering on the reset of the relationship which has not beenin the relationship which has not been in a good place for many years, they are really working to flesh out what that Reset And Renewal looks like for both countries. Boeings Starliner Spacecraft has returned to earth from the international Space Station but without the astronauts who were meant to be on board. The capsule suffered technical problems after it launched, making it too risky for the pair to return until next year. Instead of spending eight days in space, theyll now end up spending eight months our science editor, rebecca morelle, has the story. Mission Control Starliner is now backing away from station and starting its return to earth. Boeings Starliner Capsule on its way home, beginning its six Hour Voyage with a blast of its engines. And youre seeing the Light Show there on your screen. But the spacecraft is empty, without the astronauts it was supposed to carry. Nasas Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore will now stay on the international Space Station. Technical problems with starliner meant nasa said it wasnt safe enough to take the pair home. Suni williams spoke to Mission Control as the spacecraft she nicknamed calypso departed. It is time to bring calypso home. We have your backs and youve got this. Bring her back to earth. Good luck. Picking up starliner now from its lower altitude, about 6,000 feet above. In the Night Sky of new mexico, a first glimpse of the capsule. Three good parachutes. Looking great. Its descent is slowed as it closes in. Touchdown. Starliner is back on earth. The landings a success, but its a bittersweet moment for the mission team. From a human perspective, All Of Us feel happy about the successful landing. But then theres a piece of us, All Of Us, that we wish it would have been the way we had planned it. We had planned to have the Mission Land with. Butch and suni on board. The astronauts are to remain in space until february next year, their eight Day Mission extended to eight months. But nasa says theyre in good spirits, settling into life on the Space Station and taking in its spectacular views. Rebecca morrell, bbc news. Lets speak to Keith Cowing whos a former Nasa Engineer and the editor of nasa watch. Great to have you with us. I need to clarify i had seen reports that the Re Entry a number of hours ago was a success but there were a couple of snags, can you clarify . Hat of snags, can you clarify . Not that i am of snags, can you clarify . Not that i am aware of snags, can you clarify . Not that i am aware of, of snags, can you clarify . Iirrt that i am aware of, there may have been a briefing when i went to sleep. It worked nearly flawless, when you get a spacecraft that goes through all these steps as perfectly as it did, i can understand why they are thinking i wish we could have had them inside. How will the ash notes coin . Sunny has been up there before, is used to doing this. Goes with the flow, as is birch. You know you might not come home right away. They are smiling every time i see them, i assume it is going well. Every time i see them, i assume it is going well it is going well. You are a former nasa it is going well. You are a former Nasa Engineer, i it is going well. You are a former Nasa Engineer, boeing said it was safe enough for the two astronauts to return, nasa said no thank you. What was the thinking of nasa on this, what were they weighing up . Im were they weighing up . Im wrinauin were they weighing up . Im wringing my were they weighing up . In wringing my hands to of what to say. Losing spaceships with crews had a fundamental change in the safety culture. On one hand, they are more cautious than maybe we think they should have been, it is not a bad thing. Before maybe they rushed it and said we will be fine. On the other Hand Spacecraft showed it is reliable, whether they will be formally certified as such remains an open issue. Why did the thrusters not work when it first approach the Space Station . Everything but the exception of one little blip worked yesterday. I think Thatis Blip worked yesterday. I think that is Something Boeing has to pay for, it is light, it is overbudget, the Competitor Spacex are flying like a regular bus service. They have done well regular bus service. They have done well. Boeing regular bus service. They have done well. Boeing only regular bus service. They have done well. Boeing only have. Done well. Boeing only have till 2030, before that essentially, the iss will be re entering the atmosphere of earth, that will be over and done with. Lets look at some of the issues with boeing. How dangerous, Space Travel is dangerous, Space Travel is dangerous, but if we are talking about multiple thruster failures, how dangerous is that and the other issue was the Propulsion System helium leak, how dangerous is that . Here Propulsion System helium leak, how dangerous is that . How dangerous is that . Here is the thing. How dangerous is that . Here is the thing. I how dangerous is that . Here is the thing, i am how dangerous is that . Here is the thing, i am going how dangerous is that . Here is the thing, i am going to how dangerous is that . Here is the thing, i am going to grab i how dangerous is that . Here is the thing, i am going to Grab A | the thing, i am going to Grab A prop. This is the spacecraft, the fun part is where the crew is, that is what comes back to earth, the service module, the back part, does most of the firing of engines. You lose it on Re Entry. One of the reasons why they were studying less, they were reaching around the Corner Sort of, they wont get that thing back but they want to know what has gone wrong with it. The fact the third flight they still have this problem, i would flight they still have this problem, iwould be flight they still have this problem, i would be suspicious having worked there. One of the reasons that has arisen, did nasa keep a close enough Ion Boeing . Full commercialisation, a bad idea . Build this thing, bring it to us. Do we need to have some adjustments in the interaction . That is what the discussion would be. You have the examples of the Boeing Spacecraft which kind of doesnt work well and the second Max Dragon as reliable as a taxi. I second Max Dragon as reliable as a taxi. ~ , as a taxi. I think it will be the tenth. As a taxi. I think it will be the tenth, | as a taxi. I think it will be the tenth, i am as a taxi. I think it will be the tenth, i am calling i as a taxi. I think it will be the tenth, i am calling it| as a taxi. I think it will be | the tenth, i am calling it a taxi trip, to space, spacex, their tenth Nasa Trip since 2020. What are they doing right . Is it a new attack . The thing is. Right . Is it a new attack . The thing is, boeing right . Is it a new attack . The thing is, boeing is right . Is it a new attack . The thing is, boeing is a right . Is it a new attack . Tue thing is, boeing is a big Aerospace Company run for a century. I used to work in one of the companies that built the Power Catch you back on the day, they say we have that expertise. I am 68, day, they say we have that expertise. Iam 68, i day, they say we have that expertise. I am 68, i was a kid then. Those people are dead or in retirement homes. The expertise was lost but we do things differently now. They have these subcontractors, a company called aerojet, you dont have complete control over everything you are flying. Spacex is a 21st Century company, vertically aligned, they build everything themselves, products designed to be upgraded, they treated truly like a Consumer Project which is totally different than boeing or the Heritage Aerospace companies do, one or two issue things, you use it once and that is it or twice. A different mindset, clearly it is working for spacex. You mentIon Boeing, the legacy of expertise. The safety culture, do you think it has extended to their Space Programme . Do you think it has extended to theirSpace Programme . I do you think it has extended to their Space Programme . I have to say and do not know. If it looks like a duck, as they say. It is a large company with many divisions. The way you run it comes from the top out to the different parts of the company. The fact they have had growing problems with sophisticated airlines, as sophisticated as a spare aircraft, the other side, spacecraft years late. Speak to something that is not working the way it should be and clearly needs to be fixed, and boeing seems to be quite aware of that right now because it is costing them money. Of that right now because it is costing them money. Keith, the sace costing them money. Keith, the Space Station costing them money. Keith, the Space Station and costing them money. Keith, the Space Station and the costing them money. Keith, the Space Station and the two Space Station and the two astronauts, birch and suni, probably cock a hoop up there enjoying their time until february. Reports that spacex will bring them back. So i think that two more seats have been reserved for them on the return leg. Mortality engineering considerations that have to be put in place to reconfigure for two more seats . They are going to have four receipts, they have pumped two people from the fights, two people from the fights, two people going up, two empty seats. They might take more groceries and supplies up on the empty seats. What it shows, though, is that we are going down this path in america with commercial Space Flight because we didnt like the idea of having to fly with the russians, the only way to get up russians, the only way to get up there to the Space Station. One didnt work, one could back it up, the approach worked even if one of the spacecraft didnt. Tt if one of the spacecraft didnt. , ,. , if one of the spacecraft didnt. ,. ,. , didnt. It does show also i suopose didnt. It does show also i suopose how didnt. It does show also i suppose how adaptive didnt. It does show also i suppose how adaptive the corporate side and the newer technology has, i suppose. 2030, the Space Station, what actually happens is that it . I helped Design It. Helped Design It. Fantastic. There were helped Design It. Fantastic. There were thousands helped Design It. Fantastic. There were thousands of. Helped Design It. Fantastic. L there were thousands of us, there is a piece of my mind up there, experiments that are working. I dont want to see it 90, working. I dont want to see it go, it took so much effort to get up there. The idea is that it is getting old and cranky, which you could say maybe we just need to repair it, that is done to research bases and an outer in antarctica. Commercial versions might be smaller to carry on board, at the same time when they put Space Station is lunar orbit, two, Three Orfour or at Space Station is lunar orbit, two, three or four or at the same time, a Movie Line that you have to consider is show me the money. Even though they say they will shut down in 2030i am not sure that is a done deal, there are ways to rebuild it, repair it, but then a higher orbit and i do think all those discussions have been had. fin Discussions have been had. On the subject of the money, obviously there is the contract nasa had with worth so much, we are talking billions, 4 Billion ten years ago. The thing that is likely to say lets Cut Losses with boeing or will they continue and see through the contract and take this as lessons learned . Their approach was two contractors, and we have a back up. The . And we have a backup. They will look and we have a backup. They will look at and we have a backup. They will look at why and we have a backup. They will look at why one and we have a backup. They will look at why one worked i and we have a back up. Tte will look at why one worked and one did not, i have outlined the Reason Spacex worked, they have a totally product improvement oriented way, i know that is due british, but they make this stuff to fix it easily, improve it easily, you Design It to be that way, whereas the Boeing Spacecraft, locker, other companies, the companies, fixed cost contracts, Everything Boeing doesnt do something right, they have to eat the cost. At some point they might decide they are losing too much money, they are losing too much money, they will do the contract though it nasa might exercise its options, limit that to a couple of fights and go with Spacex Or Something else. That discussion is under way. Discussion is under way. Keith, im discussion is under way. Keith, im going discussion is under way. Keith, im going to discussion is under way. Keith, im going to get discussion is under way. Keith, im going to get towed discussion is under way. Keith, im going to get towed for im going to get towed for squeezing in this last question, you are an engineer, when can you see us arriving on the moon proper . T when can you see us arriving on the moon proper . The moon proper . I am a Space Bioloaist the moon proper . I am a Space Biologist but the moon proper . I am a Space Biologist but i the moon proper . I am a Space Biologist but i used the moon proper . I am a Space Biologist but i used to the moon proper . I am a Space Biologist but i used to Have Biologist but i used to have arguments with engineers so in some ways i was one. When . America and the west, by 2030 china might beat us back, we will say whether we park our spaceship when we land, how are you doing . You doing . Keith, a pleasure. You are watching you doing . Keith, a pleasure. You are watching the you doing . Keith, a pleasure. You are watching the recent l you are watching the recent news and we are going to cross the canyon now. To canyon now. To kenya now where three days of national mourning have begun after least 17 children died in a fire at a school. 70 children remain unaccounted for following the blaze which swept through a dormitory in the central more than Two Thousand people tried to help rescue the children, many of whom were sheltering under their beds. Lets start with the football to come and the uefa Nations League Matches. The republic of Ireland Host euro 2024 finallists england, under interim Boss Lee Carsley who played for ireland, 40 times in his career. He says, he wont sing either national anthem tonight. Because he always just likes to focus on the game ahead. Two england players declan Rice And Jack grealish also played for ireland, earlier in their careers. So what Sort Of reception does the current england boss, think theyll get In Dublin . We spoke about the atmosphere, we expect it to be exciting, passionate, loud, but it will be no different to what the players are used to in Premier League games or high level games. If the reception we had off the kids outside of anything to go by, it will be very positive. The build up to the Womens Singles final at the Us Open is under way, where later on saturday, jessica pegula, the home favourite, will take on the number two seed aryna sabalenka, to decide the winner of the final Grand Slam of the year. Sabalenka will be looking to avenge defeat in last years final, while pegulas after revenge, for her loss to sabalenka in the cincinnati open last month. When they ask, australia is of course my favourite but the one i most want to win obviously i say Us Open, i like to spend time off the court in New York, i like to play in front of such a beautiful crowd. Even though sometimes they are against me but i know deep inside they support me i love New York and i hope that one day i will be able to hold that beautiful trophy. Hopefully some revenge, i can play better, she will play worse than cinci. Her winning that tournament, she became a favourite here very quickly, so good on the hard courts, amazing, consistent results here at the Us Open. I know she wants this title especially after last year but i will definitely try to take what i have learned from that final and use that to the best of my ability. Its the penultimate day of the Paralympic Games in paris, with 75 gold medals upfor grabs. Around 2000 people are reported to havejoined a stand up to racism rally. On the other side of the square, a smaller, anti immigration protest took place. Both groups shouted and chanted at Each Other. There were some scuffles, when a group of men wearing masks arrived and tried to join the anti racism protest, with police trying to keep them away. Police officers had also erected barriers to keep the Rival Demonstrations apart. The most powerful storm in asia this year super typhoon yagi is now causing damage to northern vietnam. Roads and airports have been closed, and residents have been told to stay at home. Local media has reported that three people have died on the chinese island of hainan. Another three people are also reported to have died in vietnam. Earlier, i spoke to Martin Yip from bbc chinese who s in hong kong. He told me how the storm has affected china. This is already the third landfall of this super typhoon and for china, the Southern China regions of guangdong, Quang Ninh and hainan island, they are definitely not Out Of The Woods yet, so on top of the three people killed, there s also nearly 100 people injured across these three regions. According to officials, 1. 2 million people have been affected in different levels. We have seen pictures all over Social Media of trees being blown away, blocking major thoroughfares and streets and all that, as well as windows being torn apart in seconds. Our colleagues in beijing have actually managed to speak to one of them who saw windows from his balcony being torn off in no time and he also told us that he has lost hundreds of thousands of chinese yuan, that would be around Tens Of Thousands of us dollars, in his banana plantation, which has been pretty much flattened. So you can imagine what kind of economic impact this typhoon has brought to the region. Hainan island is an important area for tropical fruits and plantation. It s a very popular tourist spot, if you don t want to go out of china, and enjoy the kind of Sunshine And Beach in southeast asia, that is the place you go to, so there s a lot for hainan to review, although the least worst thing so far is probably just three died, still a significant blow to the place but only three died at the moment. Martin yip.
