Behind on the international Space Station. Touchdown. That landing coming at 11 01am. This is the moment the capsule landed in the new Mexico Desert a few hours ago. It had developed technical problems, including helium leaks, shortly after its original launch and nasa decided it would be safer to leave the two astronauts on board the iss. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams will return to earth next february in a spacex capsule, after spending eight months in Orbit Theyd only expected to be there eight days. Nasa says both astronauts are in good spirits. Nasa held a Press Conference shortly after and told us more about the mission. Lets take a listen. Happy to report starliner did really well today in the undock, Deorbit And Landing sequence. You know, we use the Nasa Docking system for the second time on the mission to to undock from the Space Station. That system performed really well. Its a derivative system will be used for orion down the road. So it was good to pave the way for orion as well. The spacecraft executed a nominal breakout sequence, the first time weve used that to back away from the station. We backed out to about five metres and then did a series of about 12 burns using the Service Module forward jets. And then we opened, after that sequence of manoeuvres, we ended up opening at about 22km per rev away from the Space Station. All those thrusters did really well through that sequence. No problems at all. Dr Megan Argo is a Senior Lecturer in astrophysics at the university of central lancashire. She told me more about the difficulties of the mission. I imagine the engineers are breathing a huge sigh of relief this morning. It looked like a textbook landing, the thrusters that had because so many problems on the approach to the Space Station seemed to have worked perfectly fine on departure from the Space Station, moving the capsule away as intended during the re entry burn, separating the capsule from the thrusters in the Service Module and the landing after that, and it will be a while we know how well it performed. There are several teams that go to see if the capsule is on the ground to do various jobs and check there is no Leaking Propellant and to make it safe for other teams to go and check the Heat Shield and then to open the capsule and take out the time critical cargo so all of the processes like that will be under way. I was going to say, it is embarrassing that the astronauts are still on the iss and i assume the question is what went wrong and can they fix it . A this is why it was in space so long in the original mission was meant to be eight days and the whole aim was to do a Certification Flight to make nasa happy that this was a usable Spacecraft And Safety going to regular was a usable spacecraft and safe to go i to regular rotation to take astronauts to and from the Space Station. Having two different capsules from two different companies means nasa can be more flexible in Scheduling Launches and returns from the iss and how often they can take up cargo and new experiments. Yes, its embarrassing for boeing that the first didnt work but they made a lot of effort while it was attached to the Space Station, the two astronauts, Butch And Suni, were doing tests in cooperation with nasa and Boeing Engineers on the ground to understand what the problem was with the thrusters. On the ground, the Boeing Engineers have the same set of engines on a test going to another launch and they were doing tests to understand exactly what went wrong, but those engines are not the same ones that were in space, and once it comes back through the atmosphere you lose the Service Module and it lands in the ocean and disappears. So to understand what is wrong, so you can fix it for next time, you need to do as many tests as you can before you bring it back and thats one of the reasons the mission was extended as long as it was. Butch and suni are used to being on the iss but they will now have to rely on Space X to get them down. Yes, they are, Space X were given a contract to develop a Crew Module at the same time as boeing, and i think for less money, but theyve done it a lot faster than boeing and their Design Philosophy and the way they prototype things and test things, they have a different Development Cycle to boeing which is an Aerospace Company that existed for many decades. So, yes, its unfortunate that they will have to wait for Space X and the problem they have is the Space Suits they were designed by boeing to fit the connections in the spacecraft and they dont fit the connections in the Space X module. So when the next mission launches later this month there will be two astronauts and two empty seats to bring back Butch And Suni home in february, they will have to send up additional spacesuits so they have the correct spacesuits to interface with the capture when they come down. To interface with the capsule when they come down. It has created something of a logistical nightmare on the international Space Station but these are the kind of scenarios that nasa think about and plan for and workshop, so it will have made a mess but its nothing on repairable. Ijust want i just want to show you the view from the international Space Station at the moment, looking down on earth, which is an amazing shot. You can get more on the fact that starliner has returned safely. On the Bbc News App debris from a downed drone was found next to Ukraines Parliament Building and in the government quarters after an overnight russian air attack. Ukraines Air Force said earlier russia launched 67 drones in a nationwide overnight attack, but that it was only able to intercept 58 of these. A series of explosions were heard in Central Kyiv shortly after 3am Debris also fell in a residential area causing fires, all those have been put out. To kenya now where three days of national mourning have begun after least 17 children died in a fire at a school. 70 children remain unaccounted for following the blaze which swept through a dormitory in the central county of nyeri more than Two Thousand people tried to help rescue the children, many of whom were sheltering under their beds. Our correspondent Barbara Plett Usher reports from nyeri. Sobbing its too much to bear, the sudden and violent death of children. Parents return from the damaged dormitory after being told their boys are among the dead. The fire broke out overnight while they were sleeping. I want to go where my child is, this woman cries, the bodies i have seen are of big children. My child has died. The school is in a remote area. Firefighters were delayed by bad roads, but neighbours rushed to try and rescue the boys. In the chaos, some went missing. Anxious relatives waited to hear whether their Son Or Nephew might still be alive. Emergency services brought in to give psychological care, the scramble to determine who lived and who died has drawn national attention. We still have 17 kids that are unaccounted. That does not mean that they have perished or they are injured, the word is that they are unaccounted for. We are praying and hoping for the best. Dna tests will identify the bodies. It may be harder to find what triggered this terrible tragedy. There have been a lot of fires in kenyan Boarding Schools over the years, many of them said to be because of arson. Now, we dont know what caused this fire, but officials are promising a thorough investigation. Which may bring a certain amount of resolution at some point, but right now, what were seeing is just raw grief and anger. Sobbing. There is fear that the Death Toll could rise and hope that it doesnt. Barbara plett usher, bbc news, central kenya. And Barbara Plett Usher has the latest on the search from nyeri, the area where the school is located. Today those efforts to find the children will continue those efforts to trace where the children might be. As you heard, a lot of local people came to the scene to try to put out the Fire And Rescue the boys. One of the women that we spoke to at the school said she had been at a late Night Vigil at a church nearby. The congregation could hear the screams, and so they ran over there to find out what was going on. So you can imagine the sort of chaos that there was. She said that they had not been able to find her nephew, an 11 year old schoolboy. They had checked at the various hospitals, hadnt been able to find him, were afraid that he might be among those whose remains have not been identified. And thats the other thing thats going forward today as well, that gruesome task of Dna Tests to determine who has died and whether some of those parents are going to get very bad news. The government pledging an investigation, and weve got three days of national mourning there. Thats right. It has drawn national attention. The number of dead, i think has been a factor here. It is true that, in fact, it is true that, in fact, School Fires in Kenya School fires in kenya are pretty common over are pretty common over the past years. The past years. Theyve taken Place Theyve taken place quite frequently. Quite frequently. For other fires have we dont know we dont know what caused this one. What caused this one. That investigation, that investigation, the president has promised, the president has promised, is going to be a thorough one is going to be a thorough one and has onlyjust started. And has onlyjust started. But some of the reasons cited but some of the reasons cited for other fires have included overcrowding and poor safety standards. There was a fire in the county, another fire in this county just yesterday, friday. That one was put out quite quickly, but it was caused by an electrical fault. The other reason often cited for these fires is arson, including some of these fires being lit by students themselves as an act of protest. Maybe if theyre unhappy about the workload, if theyre unhappy with their teachers, if theyre unhappy with the living conditions. So that has also been something kenyans have seen. As i said, we dont know what caused this fire. There is an investigation going on. Eyewitnesses and palestinian officials say israeli soldiers shot 26 year old Ay Enur Ezgi eygi in the head as she took part in a weekly protest against the Expansion Ofjewish Settlements in the town of beita near nablus. The dual national was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Jonathan pollak, an israeli activist who was at the same protest, described how protest, described how he tried to help ms egyi. He tried to help ms egyi. I put my hand under her head i put my hand under her head to try and stop the bleeding. To try and stop the bleeding. I took her pulse. I took her pulse. She had a very weak pulse. She had a very weak pulse. We called the ambulance. We called the ambulance. From there, we evacuated her from there, we evacuated her to the villages medical to the villages medical centre, where the doctor came centre, where the doctor came into the ambulance and into the ambulance and continued on to the hospital continued on to the hospital where they tried to resuscitate where they tried to resuscitate her but failed. Her but failed. Our diplomatic correspondent James Landale has more on this from jerusalem. She was a Young American turkish woman. Shed just graduated this summer from seattle, the university of washington in seattle. She had a long experience of being a pro palestinian activist in the united states, but shed only recently come to the west bank. According to friends of hers quoted in the us media, this was her first visit to the west bank, and she was attending a weekly protest in a town just south of nablus against an illegal settlement, an outpost that has been the place of a longstanding protest to try and stop israeli settlers setting up a community there. And she was at this protest, and it appeared that that protest became confrontational. We dont know how or why, but during that process, she was shot. Witnesses say they heard two gunshots, and one of those shots hit her in the head. She was taken to hospital, but she died there. Eyewitnesses say that she wasnt doing anything at the time. And they say that, you know, the israeli soldiers were at some distance. The israeli Defence Forces have put out a statement saying they are reviewing what happened. They say that their soldiers did Return Fire after they considered there was a threat. But as ever, you know, youd have to wait until full investigations have taken place to be able to piece together precisely what happened and what the sequence was. Yes. And i assume theres going to be pressure on israel to do that, both from The Americans and also from turkey, as shes a dual citizen. Yeah. Thats right. I mean, the turks have called for an investigation. President erdogan described it as a barbaric intervention by israeli armed forces. The White House said the killing was deeply disturbing, and it said that it had asked the israelis to give them more investigation, to hold an investigation into what happened. And in the last few hours, the family of miss Asenyur Have issued a statement in which they say an israeli Investigation Isnt good enough. They have called on the president , the Vice President and Secretary Of State, blinken, to order an immediate, independent, us led investigation into what happened so that they can find out precisely the sequence of events. The problem with all of this is that any kind of investigation is only going to take place with the agreement of the israeli authorities. And in these kinds of incidents over the years, there tends to be an internal israeli investigation, and it tends not to resolve itself or reach a conclusion that the familys victims always want. Lets go live to Papua New Guinea because the pope is there as part of his tour of there as part of his tour of the South East Asian region, and hes been talking to people in the capital where he called for an end to what he described as the spiral of tribal violence in Papua New Guinea and urged the pacific nation leaders to ensure that the countrys Natural Resources were used to benefit the entire community and we expect tens of thousands of catholics to attend a mass there on sunday, many of them having travelled for days or even weeks over rough terrain to participate in the gathering. This is the final stages of the ambitious four Nation Tour which will take on East Timor and singapore, but those are the live pictures coming in from Papua New Guinea. The prime Minister Sir Keir starmer is making his first official visit to ireland today. Hell be in dublin for talks with his opposite number, Simon Harris. They ll discuss Topics Including Commerce across the irish Sea And Theyll attend a Nations League Football match between ireland and england. At theirfirst meeting, Sir Keir Starmer and Simon Harris were pictured having a pint. The photo symbolised a better relationship between their two countries after some years of strain. Today, theyll go to watch england take on ireland in the uefa nations league, but the on Pitch Rivalry Wont disrupt the diplomacy. Sir keir is on something of a tour of eu capitals. In recent weeks, hes had trips to germany and france. The last british Prime Minister to go to dublin was Boris Johnson five years ago. Relations had cooled significantly. Brexit was the major factor. The border with Northern Ireland was the uks only frontier with the eu. The issue of how to avoid checkpoints here became a huge sticking point. There was also tension between the governments over the question of how the conflict, known as the troubles, should be investigated. But Sir Keir Starmer s Election Victory was broadly welcomed in dublin as a chance for a new start. There have already been signs of improving co operation. The uk and ireland are multi billion Pound Trading partners and their relationship matters in any negotiations between london and brussels. Simon harris has been meeting other international leaders this week he was in ukraine. Back home, hell be focusing on irelands ties with its nearest neighbour. Both Prime Ministers are hoping for a sure footed summit with tactical teamwork. Chris page, bbc news. Our political correspondent, georgia roberts, told us more about the significance of this trip. This trip has been billed as a new era of friendship between the two leaders after some trickiness during the brexit negotiations that we saw in the last few years and Keir Starmer has been on a busy Charm Offensive across European Capitals as part of the efforts to reset relations, so today they will be talking about a new strategic partnership and co operation. But this trip is also being billed as an economic opportunity, economic growth is a key mission of the new government, so they will be meeting with big business, companies like primark, to talk about opportunities when it comes to investment and trade. But we should also mention elsewhere today efforts to reset relations. Warm words coming from the Secretary Of State for Northern Ireland, hilary benn. He will be talking to northern Ireland Leaders talking about a new chapter and will underline the Uk Governments commitment to the good friday agreement, stability at the northern Ireland Assembly and the significance of that. So it is clear that the Labour Party see the importance of being seen to turn the page on what has been quite a tense few years when it comes to its relations with some of the nearest neighbours but certainly to add, if you talk of the Labour Party wanting to rejig aspects of its Post Brexit agreements across europe with the eu, an eu that largely sees brexit as done and dusted, and certainly Keir Starmer will need all the friends he can get in the eu. A the england football manager, Lee Carsley, has suggested he will not sing The National Anthem when his Side Line up for his first match in charge against the republic of ireland in dublin this evening. The former irish international, who replaced Gareth Southgate this summer, says itll be a proud Moment But Singing might distract his focus. Here he is speaking to 5 live s John Murray this morning. Well, the anthems are obviously a massive part of the game, especially with internationals and something that i really respect. Ive never sung The National Anthem for ireland as i wouldnt for england. And thats just because of the my own personal match preparation. Im fully focussed on the game. It was something that when i was, playing for ireland, i always struggled with the wait between warming up, going back into the dressing room, the walk in the tunnel and then the wait while while the anthems are on. Its because usually in the Premier League it was quite quick. So, yeah, fully focussed on the game and i used to do that as a player as well. Thinking about my first touch, first action of the game. In the england Under 21s. Its really in that zone and preparing for the game. Well Football Writer Henry winter gave us his assessment on this. Oh, its disappointing, slightly hilarious, and sort of reminds us slightly of the the old days with stories like this. I mean, i think we had it with wayne rooney. He had 120 caps for england, didnt always sing The National Anthem. You couldnt ask for a more wholehearted, patriotic player than him. Ditto Gary Neville, 85 caps for england. Didnt always sing The National Anthem, but thats because those two rooney and Gary Neville were, as carsley was alluding to from his own perspective, were totally focussed on the game and they didnt want to be distracted from that. Lee carsley was, has been, and technically still is i guess, a very good, accomplished england under 21 coach. He never sang The National Anthem there. He got them playing with style. He got them playing and actually they won a trophy. So there was no issue there. And also we have to remember, asJohn Murray was alluding to, is that hes a former republic of ireland international. He played a0 times for them and he didnt sing for them as well. So if thats the way he does it, theres far more important things about this England Football Team to worry about. The lack of a left back, the balance on the left. Why did they play with a handbrake on during the euros . Why cant they get over the line when they get to finals . Theyre far more significant issues with england than one man deciding not to sing a song, which really, from a footballing perspective, isnt his anthem anyway. Yeah, it is, of course, on all the front pages. As we alluded to. Have all past england managers sung the anthem . No, i mean, sven tried. I mean, hes swedish. Im sure he would sing the swedish national anthem. Fabio capello, italian, didnt sing the The National Anthem. I dont think he even sung in the press box, so. Look, if theyre focussed on the game, i dont think its, you know, thats thats the way they focus. Plus, also in a footballing setting, Lee CarsleyIsnt English just because he was born in birmingham. Hes got roots obviously in ireland, he played for them so theres no real reason. Plus, also the reason that he gave is that hes focussed on the game. So talking of the game, Harry Kane says hes carrying the hurt of Englands Euro 2024 final defeat as we start this spell with Lee Carsley in charge. What are the key things that we need to be looking out for later . Well, its a really important question because its far more important than the anthem. What you want is Lee Carsley getting a tune out of the players. Hes got six games to show with kane and the other players that the england can play with a fearlessness that englands Under 21s have shown. Some of them have actually stepped up. We might see Levi Colwill at left back. Hes more a left sided Centre Half but he can play very well at left back. I think itll be exciting to see him and some of the Under 21s who did so well under a non singing Lee Carsley in the Under 21s. I think well see them step up as well. Britains Jack Draper lost in dramatic fashion in his Us Open semi final the 22 year old vomiting on court several times in his defeat to World Number one Jannik Sinner. In the biggest match of his career, draper went down in straight sets, 7 5 7 6 6 2 in new york. During the second set, the 25th Seed vomited three times. After the match he said. im quite an anxious Human Being and i do feel a little bit sick when it gets tough. Italian Jannik Sinner will play american Taylor Fritz in sundays final. And finally, before we go lets take you to the toronto film festival, where Sir Eltonjohn has made his first public appearance, days after he revealed an Eye Infection had left him with limited vision. The star arrived On The Red Carpet in a buggy with his husband smiling and waving at the cameras. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello. The past few days have brought some heavy Rain And Flash flooding across parts of South Wales and southern england, but some much warmer weather further north. Those contrasts continue through the rest of the weekend. Warm sunshine in the North West today. A few showers around further south, but certainly not the persistent and heavy rain that weve seen over recent days. Bit of rain moving in across the South West of england this afternoon into wales, the midlands. Parts of lincolnshire could see the odd shower. Much of south East England and East Anglia should stay dry and further north across scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England you are staying dry, settled and pretty warm too. We could see temperatures again in the mid 20s in some spots, a little Bit Cooler Close to the East Coast where you keep that onshore flow and a little bit of misty murkiness. Through this evening and well start to see this area of low pressure sitting to the south, just easing a little bit further north. As it does so, it will throw some showers and some thunderstorms across southern counties of england, initially into South Wales, and later in the night, some of those showers become a little bit more extensive for central and southern england and wales. The northern half of the uk stays dry overnight, but again, like the past few nights weve got some mist and some fog with that moist, humid Air Mass. Temperatures staying in the mid teens. Through the Day Tomorrow then weve got this area of rain that becomes a little bit more persistent across parts of Northern England, wales, down towards the South West of england. Sunshine and slow moving, heavy thundery showers for the rest of england, i think. But scotland and Northern Ireland again dry for much of the day. Some rain into the east later on, but temperatures 23 degrees or so for the warmest spots. And of course its the Great North Run tomorrow. And i do think some of that rain could affect the region for quite a bit of the day. 14 or 15 degrees. Not too warm for any runners there. Heading through into monday, and low pressure starts to ease away towards the east. Higher Pressure Building in so that will improve the weather from the west as we move through monday, but some showers linger for parts of eastern england, the winds coming in from a west or even North Westerly direction, so a bit of a change in wind direction. Itll feel different. Not as warm as recent days, not as humid and temperatures between about 16 to 19 for most of us. But then that Cooling Trend continues as we head into next week, especially through the middle part of the week. You can see the blue colour showing this colder Air Mass sinking in from the North West, bringing with it some sunshine, but also some showers. A real drop in temperature through next week, and most of the showers are going to be across the North West of the uk. Bye for now. This is bbc news, the headlines. Boeings Starliner Spacecraft lands back on earth but the astronauts it was supposed to be carrying are staying behind. The capsule had developed technical problems, and nasa decided it would be safer to leave the two astronauts on board the iss. The new yorkjudge overseeing donald trumps criminal hush Money Case has delayed sentencing until three Sir Keir Starmer will become the first british Prime Minister to visit the republic of ireland in five years.
