It was in some ways a troubled three month Test Mission, the capsule suffered Technical Problems after it launched, and nasser s Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams who were On Board are remaining on the international Space Station because it was deemed to risky for them to return home. To stay with us, i am going to bring in our Science Editor to the conversation, rebecca morelle, Whojoins UsIn The Studio. This was supposed to be an eight day mission, it ended up being eight months. What is your assessment of it . The landing looks pretty good from where im sitting, there will be a Nasa Press briefing happening within the next 90 minutes so we will hear more about it than, but the Spacecraft seems to have performed well, everything looks 0k, performed well, everything looks ok, the teams will be rushing over to check it out now. When i say it went to plan, the bit but didnt go to plan, the bit but didnt go to plan was the fact that it didnt have the astronauts inside the capsule, it was coming back every empty, just their spacesuits and they are in fact. They have stayed behind on the international Space Station, as you said, for what was initially supposed to be eight days, that is now going to last for eight months, they are not coming back until february next year. It is because of the sort of complex scheduling of To Ing and Fro Ing from the Space Station so they have to wait for a Spacex Rocket and Spacecraft that will bring to astronauts instead of the four astronauts planned, and that means they will be able to come back on that Spacecraft when it leaves in february next year, making a team of four when they come Back To Earth. What happens next boeing will be interesting. Nasa has emphasised its commitment to working with boeing so i do think we will see the Spacecraft fly again but how long before another pair of astronauts get inside it, that ought to be decided thatis it, that ought to be decided that is all to be decided. There is a whole process dottie. There is a whole process at dottie. There is a whole process at nasa dottie. There is a whole process at nasa before dottie. There is a whole L Process at nasa before they make a decision to return the vehicle with the crew and they went through all the data, they went through all the data, they went through all the data, they went through the engineering that was understood at the time, and the decision was to keep the crew on orbit. And thatis keep the crew on orbit. And that is exactly why we want this redundancy of vehicles because they can have Butch And Suni stay On Board and that is just fine, and that luxury has not always existed as you heard. That is why they didnt come back, and that is ok, i think that is the wise decision. And we will learn from Starliner, and there will be much to come in the future, and that is the part of spaceflight, and we know it is risky, but was no need to take human Light Risk this time, and so that is why the decision was made to keep those astronauts on orbit, thats really wise. Human life at risk. We on orbit, thats really wise. Human life at risk. We will show you Human Life at risk. We will show you some Human Life at risk. We will show you some pictures Human Life at risk. We will| show you some pictures there from the international Space Station, i still have our Science Editor morelle In The Studio, i am Science Editor morelle In The Studio, iam reading Science Editor morelle In The Studio, i am reading an article you wrote on the bbc website, and one of the things you talk about when we talk about some of the challenges and problems is the capsule experiencing leaks of helium which you said put fuel into the propulsion system. So what were some of the Technical Problems that meant now you have those two astronauts who seem to be completely fine, they are still up completely fine, they are still up in space . Completely fine, they are still uinsace . , , up in space . Yeah, the problems started really up in space . Yeah, the problems started really quite up in space . Yeah, the problems started really quite soon up in space . Yeah, the problems started really quite soon after started really quite soon after launch, there were these leaks of helium, and there was issues with some of the thrusters on the Spacecraft as well. That is initially why the mission got extended, because while the Spacecraft, while Starliner was actually docked to the international Space Station, boeing and Nasa Engineers were sort of looking at these problems and working out exactly what was causing them and whether there was a way to actually resolve them in a manner to get the astronauts back down. It took them a long time, they spent months trying to get this, Workout Testing and space, but also testing on earth as well to try and look at why these problems were happening. I think in The End as dottie said the nasa, they have to weigh up the risks of this, you have the option of returning Butch And Suni in a capsule where there are these problems, there is a risk attached to that, or you can return the capsule back empty and they can come back later with much less risk to them doing so which is why it nasa went down outline. Taste doing so which is why it nasa went down outline. Went down outline. We are showing went down outline. We are showing pictures went down outline. We are showing pictures now went down outline. We are | showing pictures now again went down outline. We are i showing pictures now again of the unblocking which was many months ago. You talk about in your article, months ago. You talk about in yourarticle, rebecca, months ago. You talk about in your article, rebecca, that that was six hours ago, pardon me. That was the undocking six hours ago as it returns Back To Earth. In the article you have written, you talk about there being tension in the room between boeing and nasa when it wasnt making that decision about whether to have the astronauts back On Board in the astronauts back On Board in the timeframe that had been planned or whether to postpone things as has now been the case. Just tell us about that. This is from a Press Briefing this week, kind of an interesting insight into what went wrong, and nasa and their spokesman basically said boeing did want the Spacecraft to carry the astronauts back, they thought it would perform well, they run different models, they thought the safety issues were not enough to make it a risk to Butch And Suni coming home. Nasa disagreed with that ultimately end the decision does come down to nasa because they are Nasa Astronauts, it is a boeing Starliner-Spacecraft'>Starliner Spacecraft but they are Nasa Astronauts On Board. What has been interesting throughout this is running through a lot of these decisions, nasa has been looking back to its Space Shuttle programme, the two disasters which killed astronauts On Board, so they take these things really seriously and i think a particular over the last few weeks there has been a lot of openness from nasa about their Decision Making Process and what they have been finding out about the Technical Problems with the Starliner'>Boeing Starliner, so it has been interesting to see this process played out. Lets bring dottie back in. Would Butch And Suni have everything they need to last the next eight months, or to last until next february when they will be coming back . Would they have packed enough . There is always enoughin they may need. There is always enough in space to astronauts, we actually dont need as much as we think we do on earth, because you dont really get dirty. You do sweat, there is other things like that, but there is always food available, they had already planned for they had already planned for the team that would be coming up the team that would be coming up on a Spacex Crew to have four people, there will be plenty of food to go around and the Clothing Part Isnt as big an issue, a lot of us where general sizes space. It was co authored by rebecca and also Alison Francis and michael shields, but yeah, you can see that on the Bbc News Website. The United Nations has called for a full investigation into the death of an American Turkish Dual Citizen in the occupied West Bank. The spokesman for the Un Secretary General reiterated that civilians must be protected at all times. Eyewitnesses and palestinian officials say israeli soldiers shot 26 year old Aysenur Ezgi Eygi in the head as she took part in a weekly protest against the Expansion Ofjewish Settlements in the town of beita, near nablus. The dual national was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Jonathan pollak, an israeli activist who was at the same protest, described how he tried to help ms eygi. I put my hand under her head to try and stop the bleeding, i took her pulse, she had a very weak pulse, we called the ambulance, from there looked at her. Tried to weak pulse, we called the looked at her. Tried to save her but failed. The Israeli Military has admitted firing at a demonstrator and said it was looking into the incident. The White House said it had Reached Out to israel for more information and described her death as tragic. Heres the us secretary of state. We deplore this tragic loss. Now the most important thing to do is gather the facts, and thatis do is gather the facts, and that is exactly what we are in the process of doing. And we are intensely focused on getting those facts. And any actions that we take are driven by the facts. So first things first, lets find out exactly what happened. Im joined In The Studio by said shehata from bbc arabic. You have officials and the family and friends of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi who want to know more about what happened. The israelis say they are looking into this, what happens now . What happens now is there is pressure on israel to investigate. There is condemnation from some arab countries, that qatari s, jordanians, some us lawmakers have raised the point about the settlements and settlers in the West Bank because the violence of settlers is increasing and recently come out last month, some settlers invaded one of the villages in the West Bank and set cars alight and that stuff. And one of the us lawmakers said the netanyahu government has done nothing to stop Settlement Expansion and a settler violence. So it raises the whole point about that, it is more settlements and over the last 50 years many settlements were built and more than 700,000 people live there and there is tension between the palestinians in this villages and the israeli settlements. So there is a big problem and The Americans put sanctions on some of the settlers and some other organisations who support settlers. So this incident puts a light on the situation. And it is not the first time to happen, this international Solidarity Movement which is the american Turkish Woman was part of it, demonstrating against the settlement, it has happened before, there is an american activist who was also crushed by Israeli Military bulldozer according to reports in 2003, so as not the first time to happen. So the investigation should be done, but one of the muslim american advocacy groups, the council on islamic and american relations, called for The Americans, the Minister Ofjustice to investigate that, because they dont trust the israelis to investigate and reach a conclusion which is in their opinion fair. So there is more pressure on israel from america and the arab countries but it is the problem of settlement and settlers should be sorted out because it is the case that it will carry on and might happened again. Donald trump will not face sentencing in his criminal hush Money Case until after the november elections. The judge overseeing the case said this was to avoid any appearance of influencing the vote. The republican president ial candidate has been convicted of falsifying Business Records to hide payments to an adult film star. Hes called the case a Witch Hunt and denies doing anything wrong. 0ur North America editor, sarah smith, has more. Donald trump was worried that being sentenced just weeks before the president ial election could harm his chances, because he could get a jail sentence, chances, because he could get a jailsentence, he chances, because he could get a jail sentence, he is facing up to four years in prison for those illegal hush money payments. So he had asked for the sentencing to be delayed. And the judge gave the sentencing to be delayed. And thejudge gave him the sentencing to be delayed. And the judge gave him what he wanted, although he was at pains to stress Mr Trump Wasnt getting any kind of special treatment, he said he felt he had to delay the sentencing until after the election in november so no one would think that it would impact the outcome of that election. It has to be said, it has been Donald Trumps legal strategy, will the cases he is facing, to delay, delay a delay as much as he possibly can and it has proven to be a remarkably effect of strategy. Lets run through all the other cases that are pending against him. There is the charges he was facing for having classified documents at his home in mar a lago. The Florida Judge has entirely dismissed that case because she says the Special Prosecutor who brought those charges had not been properly appointed. There is the accusations of Election Interference in the state of georgia, that case is effectively on holder since the revelation that the District Attorney was having an affair with the man she appointed as prosecutor. That case cannot continue until legal arguments about that relationship had concluded. And of course there was the 6january case and the federal charges of Election Interference, that has been delayed and wont be happening until after the federal election, delayed by the Supreme Court ruling that president s have legal immunity for any acts committed while in office. And dont forget, if Donald Trump does Go On to win that election in november he could then easily instruct his Justice Department to simply drop all of those january the sixth charges against him and it would entirely go away.
