Grenfell. The Deputy Prime Minister says it is completely unacceptable that people are still living in homes covered with Dangerous Cladding seven years after the Grenfell Tower fire. Yesterdays final report into the disaster said all 72 deaths were entirely avoidable. The government also wants police and prosecutors to take action as quickly as possible. Criminal charges could include corporate manslaughter. This report this is from jessica lane. Corporate manslaughter. This report is from jessica lane. Survivors and relatives survivors and relatives of those who died Say Theyve of those who died Say Theyve now had apologies and some now had apologies and some answers, but theirfight answers, but Theirfight Forjustice goes on. Forjustice goes on. Antonio and miguel managed antonio and miguel managed to escape the fire. To escape the fire. Miguel and his wife knocked miguel and his wife knocked on doors of five other on doors of five other flats on the 13th floor, flats on the 13th floor, warning friends and warning friends and neighbours to get out. Neighbours to get out. Its my duty to do that anyway, its my duty to do that anyway, if i knew that its if i knew that its a fire in the building. A fire in the building. I mean, its the small thing that i mean, its the small thing that i can do isjust to give i can do isjust to give advice to my neighbours. Advice to my neighbours. Now the inquirys finished, and the second chapter is starting. So it is important now that the government takes on board the recommendation. But bereaved families and survivors may have to wait until at least The End of 2026 for a decision on potential criminal charges over the fire. Here are some of the reports key findings. In 2001, before the disaster, the alarm was raised about cladding related fires. But despite a committee of Mps Raising concerns flammable Cladding Wasnt banned. The report also found that tests conducted in 2001 revealed that the cladding of concern burned violently, though the government did not tighten any rules. In 2010, the Coalition Government was intent on cutting regulations. The inquiry found that even matters affecting the safety of life were ignored, delayed or disregarded. The inquiry also found there had been systematic dishonesty from manufacturers, with one company deliberately concealing the true extent of the danger of its product. The report also found the firefighters from the London Fire brigade, who went into grenfell, were not properly prepared. Prime minister Keir Starmer visited grenfell and apologised yesterday for the systematic failings which led to the deaths, all of which the report found were avoidable. But his government says it wont be easy to make peoples homes safer, even though £5 billion is available to carry out the work needed. Theres no excuse to not do this work now, and there are still some buildings that we believe havent been identified. Also, weve identified a630 and only 50 of them are currently in remediation. But it is completely unacceptable that the remediation is taking as long as it is. Around the country, people are fighting to get safety improvements made to their homes. Rachael loftus lives in leeds city centre, Building Checks after the Grenfell Fire found urgent changes needed to be made here. Alongside Timber Cladding on the outside of the building. Weve also been told that this Polycarbonate Sheeting should never have been used on a residential building because its likely to melt if the temperature got very high. And then the other problem is that this is the insulation thats used behind the outer wall of our building, and thats basicallyjust polystyrene. So that also would melt. And that should be quite toxic in the event of a fire. New Fire Alarms have been fitted and residents took the owners of the building to court. But Work Isnt expected to begin until november next year. The developers say thats reasonable given the Nature And Complexity of the works in question. Seven years on, Grenfell Tower remains a place of remembrance and a warning that urgent changes are needed to dangerous homes the government says speeding up the process of identifying those and getting that work done is now its priority. Jessica lane, Bbc News. With me now is someone who has been reporting on grenfell since the fire, bbc londons reporter. You know many of the families, the bereaved families, the survivors really well. You have them many times and after yesterdays report from the inquiry, what is their Mood Today . I from the inquiry, what is their Mood Toda . ~ ,. , from the inquiry, what is their Mood Toda . ~ ,. ,. , from the inquiry, what is their Mood Toda . ~ ,. , today . I think its fair to say many are simply today . I think its fair to say many are simply exhausted, today . I think its fair to say many are simply exhausted, not today . I think its fair to say many are simply exhausted, notjust today . I think its fair to say many are simply exhausted, notjust by| are simply exhausted, notjust by the last days, weeks, months and years of waiting for this final report to come out. There had been huge delays and many i have spoken to said they did not want it this way round. The public Inquiry Idea came from theresa may, that trauma on them while also campaigning and going about their daily lives, they are campaigning for the justice that they desperately need for their loved ones. Its exhaustive and it put a huge strain on people. We have thought about this a lot at bbc london, notjust myself of the team on radio and on all our platforms and television, but the mental Health Strain as well on people is huge. Ptsd is very common still seven years on. There are some campaigners that have sadly died waiting forjustice, so the strain on people here is huge. Yes, it was an important day yesterday, its a milestone, but there are still obviously a long way to go. find milestone, but there are still obviously a long way to go. And what we have been obviously a long way to go. And what we have been reminded obviously a long way to go. And what we have been reminded of obviously a long way to go. And what we have been reminded of the last i we have been reminded of the last couple of days is the communitys strength, the resilience, the banded together to support one another. Absolutely. Is hugely diverse community. Before the fire, it was a very active community and just in the space that we are here, there is a sports that does a lot of support for young people, for adults. There are amazing Football Teams that have come out of this tragedy. There is an Arts Centre over the corner and i have just come from a Community Centre where young teenagers are for the first time talking about their trauma and that they want to be those people to keep the fight up for justice. Those people to keep the fight up forjustice. So there is a huge strength, but there is as i stay still a huge trauma here, and many arejust asking when still a huge trauma here, and many are just asking when will it end . When one of those prosecutions happen . Will those changes be implemented . The recommendations be taken seriously by government . One family i spoke to yesterday when he said the Prime Minister, went to number ten and met Keir Starmer and then looked at their television and saw how members of parliament walked out during the suppose it on grenfell or i believe it was just after the Prime Minister spoke. That does not look good, and it does not play well for this community they have tried so hard to play by the rules and to interact with government and authorities. So, yes, it is a strong, diverse community but they will still need to support Each Other going forward. I would ick u Each Other going forward. I would pick up about Each Other going forward. I would pick up about what Each Other going forward. I would pick up about what he Each Other going forward. I would pick up about what he said Each Other going forward. I would pick up about what he said about| Each Other going forward. I would i pick up about what he said about the meeting taking place with young teenagers talking about how they have to then take on this fight for justice, and it gives you a sense of how long this is taking because it sounds like they are thinking of this in generational terms and it should not have to take such a long time, should it . Should not have to take such a long time, should it . Absolutely. Anyone who is going time, should it . Absolutely. Anyone who is going along time, should it . Absolutely. Anyone who is going along to time, should it . Absolutely. Anyone who is going along to the who is going along to the anniversary events, to the silent walks are the marches, the rallies that happen, some of the signs that are held up our of other tragedies. Hillsboro for example. I know there is a lot of connection between some of the grenfell campaigners and some of the grenfell campaigners and some of the grenfell campaigners and some of the hillsboro campaigners in liverpool because that connection is unfortunate because of the tragedies and the state of the fights with the state they have both had. So, yes and people are in it for the long haul. They want to make sure that something comes of this terrible, terrible tragedy and that those 72 lives were not lost in vain. Those way people that i mentioned, they have seen their parents deal with this trauma, they have suffered in some of them have had their School Life interrupted and some of them went to the school right next to the tower. So it has affected, seven years as a long time in a childs lie. ,. ,. , years as a long time in a childs lie. ,. ,. ,. , lie. Its a long time if you are a ounu lie. Its a long time if you are a young teenager, absolutely. I lie. Its a long time if you are a l young teenager, absolutely. For lie. Its a long time if you are a young teenager, absolutely. For all of us, young teenager, absolutely. For all of us. There young teenager, absolutely. For all of us, there are young teenager, absolutely. For all of us, there are these milestones. | of us, there are these milestones. 18 children died in the fire. They wont make the milestones of the people will be able to, to see into a she. So, yes, ithink people will be able to, to see into a she. So, yes, i think in the words of many campaigners who have spoken to me and when i say campaigners i mean bereaved families and survivors who dont want to be campaigners for thats what they are now, the fight continues. They have no choice but to keep putting the pressure on, taking Time Out of their daily lives and put the pressure on and also support Each Other, to make sure that the young, the older people with disabilities all get to, you know, feel that they are supported going forward whatever gets thrown at them coming next. At them coming next. Thank you so much for that. At them coming next. Thank you so much for that. Of at them coming next. Thank you so much for that. Of course at them coming next. Thank you so much for that. Of course we at them coming next. Thank you so much for that. Of course we know. Much for that. Of course we know that there are people living in thousands of buildings still which are unsafe because they have got unsafe cladding and other measures need to be taken. The last thing the grenfell families want is for any otherfamily to grenfell families want is for any other family to have to go through what they went through as a result of that awful fire in june 2017. The other thing of course is those families and survivors of focusing on the metropolitan police investigation, and they want that to happen as quickly as possible. Here at Bbc News, we want to thank everyone who was spoken to us over the last couple of days, from the firefighters in the ground that night trying to save lives and especially of course the bereaved families and the survivors as well. As they continue their fight for justice, this is a story that we are going be returning to again and again. From grenfell, back to the studio. Thanks very much. A year later, Damaris Mutua was killed, and her partner identified as a suspect. He is still at large. The loss of three elite female athletes to Domestic Violence in as many years in kenya has raised serious concerns and discussions about their safety. Anne soy, Bbc News, nairobi. In the past few hours, its been announced that the eus former brexit negotiator, michel barnier, will be the next Prime Minister of france. In the past half an hour, he is been meeting with the current Prime Minister for the formal handover of power. Mr barnier has been asked for the president to form a new government to end weeks of deadlocked negotiations between the rival parties. Nearly two months ago, Mr Macron called Snap Elections that failed to produce a clear winner. We can show you now some live pictures of the hotel which is the official residence of the Prime Minister of france in paris, where that meeting is under way. We were hearing earlier from the that meeting is under way. We were Hearing Earlierfrom the uk Prime MinisterKeir Starmer, a Spokesperson Saying that the announcement about Mr Barnier, that he wanted to wish them all the best in his new role and that the uk enjoys a strong relationship with france and the spokesperson also said that the Prime Minister visited paris just last week and we are committed to working collaboratively on our shared priorities from tackling illegal migration to supporting ukraine. So those talks are under way now between the current prime Minister Handing over to michel barnier, the new Prime Minister of france but the French Parliament could still veto the choice was a vote of no confidence. Our Paris Correspondent explained that Mr Barnier is more well known in the uk than in france. Hell be able to form a government. How long it will last is another matter. The prospects are not good. And thats to say from the start, because of this arithmetic fact, which is that, you know, there are three blocs in parliament. He represents one of them, the sort of Centre And Centre right around macron and the old gaullists. But there are two other equivalent groups thats the left, broadly speaking, and the populist right. And the left and the populist right have no or in no mood to do any favours to macron or to Mr Barnier and could, at the drop of a hat, bring him down. These slim chances that he has of surviving are based around the fact that Marine Le Pen and her populists are slightly more ambiguous towards him than they were to other potential nominees, and it could be that they kind of keep him hanging on, you know, give him a stay of execution for maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months. The fact is that they, though, are the kind of deciders in all of this. If Marine Le Pen and her party decide that theyve had enough of him, then he will go. The left will always vote against him, because the left are furious because they say they won the election, and they did as an alliance get the biggest number of seats in parliament. So they say they should have the Prime Ministership. That hasnt happened. Instead, weve got a man very much from the establishment, from the centre, centre right. So the left will always vote against him. Its the far right Populist Group who mightjust give him this stay of execution. Its still president macron, particularly on foreign affairs, who calls the shots. He will, though, be a weakened president. And so the Prime Minister is an important figure, and the Prime Minister traditionally has a sort of tense relationship with the president. And it might be that, you know, barnier, were he to theoretically survive, would, you know, try to encroach on european matters. But the point is broadly, though, that, you know, macron, barnier do see Eye To eye. Theyre much of a muchness. Theres no particular, you know, dispute between them, which is why barnier is going to be so unpopular on the left. I mean, what barnier brings is his character, his nature. Hes a very, very calm, unruffled, patient man. All of which is very good in those negotiations. By the same token, hes not a particularly interesting person. I mean, he doesnt excite passion, but maybe thats what we need. And dont forget, of course, that, you know, were not dealing with the conservative government any more, with whom there were obvious tensions. Were dealing with a labour government. And, you know, automatically feelings are far more positive here. The Chief Prosecutor of The International Criminal Court has told the bbcjustice must be seen to be done after seeking an Arrest Warrant in may for israels prime Minister And Defence minister. Warrants were also sought for three hamas leaders, two of whom have since been killed. Karim khan made the comments while speaking to Nick Robinson on political thinking. What could i have done if one had applied for warrants for hamas and not against. Looked at the evidence . If the evidence compelled action in israel, when at that time 30,000 plus, 40,000 people had been killed in gaza, theyd say, well, this is a weak court that has influenced a weak prosecutor, influenced by power dynamics. If one had applied for warrants in relation to israeli officials and not for gaza, theyd say, well, this is an obscenity that. How on earth is that possible . I think we did what was right. We had evidence. We need to apply the law. And you cant have one approach for countries where theres support, where theres nato support, european support, powerful countries behind you, and a different approach where you have clearjurisdiction because a storm may result. Now its time for a look at the weather. Hello there. A real mix of weather around this afternoon. We could have a few Flooding Problems to come across southern parts of england, but for Northern Ireland and West Scotland, the skies look like this. No chance of flooding here. Its a beautiful, warm and sunny day. Its across the south of england that weve already seen some rain, and The Rain is set to get a lot heavier over the next few hours because this area of rain thats been across northern france, thats brought 24mm of rain in just the space of one hour. And that intense zone of rain is rotating in now across southern england. So coastal parts of sussex, isle of wight, hampshire, into parts of wiltshire, somerset and perhaps gloucestershire as well, these areas im most concerned about, with that torrential rain potentially bringing some localised flash flooding, where we see that very intense rain over the space of a few hours. So there could be some problems this afternoon. Now there will be some rain across southern parts of wales too, further northwest for West Scotland and Northern Ireland, it stays beautiful, fine, settled and sunny, probably seeing the weather brighten up across East Anglia for a few as we go through the afternoon. But underneath that rain in the south, for some temperatures just around 1a or 15 this afternoon. Overnight tonight more rain is forecast across these southern areas. Elsewhere it will turn quite humid. That humidity will build in some areas of low cloud. Bit of drizzle, some Mist And Fog patches. So for some for East Scotland and eastern areas of england it could be quite a murky start to the day tomorrow. Slow improvements as well. Eventually most of us will see some warm spells of sunshine, but not in the south. Here weve got further outbreaks of rain and again, that rain is set to be heavy and potentially thundery. Away from the far south, though overall its a much warmer day tomorrow. Temperatures quite widely between around 22 and 27 c. The weekend, same area of low pressure still on our weather charts. The system is weakening somewhat, so rather than the persistent rain, we are looking at showers. The showers could be heavy and thundery and wontjust be affecting southern portions of the uk, the risk extends across the midlands, North Wales and into northern england, to the North West of scotland and Northern Ireland, probably having the driest and the brightest of the weather both through saturday and sunday. But that said, most of us, i think, will see at least some sunshine at times, but still hefty downpours around for england and wales into sunday. The main risk, though, over the next few hours watch out for that very heavy rain in the south. This is Bbc News. The headlines.
