So the economic health of the us, which of the worlds largest economy is under some doubt at the moment. We are still having some problems there. Sorry about that, we had some technical issues. What does this tell us about the late market in the us . This tell us about the late market in the us . This was a Surrise Market in the us . This was a surprise to market in the us . This was a surprise to the market in the us . This was a surprise to the downside, market in the us . This was a surprise to the downside, Usi Surprise to the downside, us companies adding 99,000 jobs in august. That was far fewer than what was expected and in terms of wages, Wage Growth for worker switching jobs and those who decided to remain in their currentjob, was at the slowest pace since 2021. It is telling us that the Labour Market is shifting into a lower gear. This is lower than normal hiring is coming after two years of what has been outsized growth. 0fficials years of what has been outsized growth. Officials have suggested they will be focusing on the other side of the dual mandate which is employment and they will be meeting later this month. The Big Question is whether they will be cutting Interest Rates by 25 of 50 basis point. I also think it will be interesting to see at the adp data accurately foreshadows the non farm payrolls data is that we get tomorrow which it hasnt always in the past. It tomorrow which it hasnt always in the past in the past. It has been a busy week for economic in the past. It has been a busy week for economic data in the past. It has been a busy week for economic data in in the past. It has been a busy week for economic data in the | week for economic data in the us. Another sorry it has been Making Headlines is us steel. Block that Takeover Bid from Ja An . , ,. Japan . Yes, this is very much about Electionyear Japan . Yes, this is very much about electionyear politics, | about Election Year politics, you could say. If i had been another year, you could say. If i had been anotheryear, perhaps you could say. If i had been another year, perhaps the deal would have come through a lot easier. It is unlikely that he can outright Block the deal. Any move to do so would be subject to litigation but it is interesting. I was talking to Henrietta Trays this morning and she said it is more about strengthening unions into this deal and giving them some average in the negotiations. So she does not think it will be so black and white as to being an outright Block. An outright Block. Thank you very much french president Emmanuel Macron has named Michel Barnier as Prime Minister almost two months after frances Snap Elections ended in political deadlock. Mr barnier is the eus former chief Brexit Negotiator and led talks with the Uk Government between 2016 and 2019. Hes been described as a Veteran Politican belonging to the right wing Republican Party in france. He will now have to form a government that will Need to survive a national assembly divided into three big political blocs, with none able to form a clear majority. To discuss this, im now joined by Kate Parker who is the principal economist, for europe at the economist intelligence unit. Got some issues in the screen but i believe she is with us. In terms of what the rationale is behind picking Michel Barnier, what is the reason, why has he gone for him . I think it has taken a long time. I think that is the first thing to point out. The elections in june and july over the course of two rounds and it has taken this long because the national assembly is very divided, very fragmented and there isnt much consensus about who should be leading then next government. They have gone through a number of names. We had come to barnier, i think his expose as a negotiator at any level really plays a part. He is very experienced and not only at the Eu Level but also domestically. He has held positions as minister of agriculture, foreign affairs, minister of european affairs. Syria is a very experienced politician. I think you will Need all that expense because he faces a very challenging situation in terms of forming a government and being able to govern effectively. So he is a very experienced politician. Ithink he struggles because he comes from the party that indie very well the elections. The main pub when they face is this left bloc that won the elections but they think they have been robbed in terms of the day think that they should have had the candidate as Prime Minister. He is very experienced, i think you will Need all of that experience to survive as Prime Minister. He will Need. Survive as Prime Minister. He will Need. He will Need. Thank you very much, he will Need. Thank you very much. Kate he will Need. Thank you very much, Kate Parker. Now lets head to bangladesh its been one month since the dramatic ousting of Prime Minister sheikh hasina. Since then bangladeshs clothing factories that supply big Fast Fashion Brands like h m, Zara And Hugo boss are limping back to normality. But the countrys new Interim Government faces long term economic challenges that will take years to fix. Nikhil inamdar, has this Special Report from dhaka. Back up and running after political turmoil roiled the worlds second largest Source Market for ready garments. At sonia knitwear, workers are in a race against time to finish up these christmas sweaters. The big concern at Garment Factories like these is not so much the short term monetary losses, but its really the reputational damage that bangladesh may suffer on the international stage. And the worry now is that long term political instability could mean cancelled orders and Supply Chains relocating to other parts of the world. This man, whose family founded this Export Unit 20 years ago, is worried. Translation bangladesh doesnt have enough dollar reserves. How will we pay for imports of yarn from India And China if we dont have forex . Customers arent able to visit for Order Placements either because they arent getting travel insurance. We might see a hit in the Spring Summer Season if there is a loss of confidence about the economy. Outside the Garment Factories, these students were part of the dramatic protests that brought down sheikh hasinas government. Theyve all been unemployed for more than two years. Translation the government should encourage the youth to join the private sector. We are hopeful because the new leader is an entrepreneur himself. Translation right now, | we do not get the right skills from our universities to get private jobs. We Need to be better trained. Bangladeshs failure to do this comes into sharp focus at this deserted it park. An ambitious project launched in 2015, it was meant to house thousands of skilled techies who would help the country diversify and reduce its overreliance on garments. Ten years on, its almost completely empty. We have been investing in physical infrastructure, but how much we have invested in human infrastructure, right . Human resource are the Raw Material of this industry. From the new government, we Need proper Planning And Investment in developing the right human resource. 0n the streets of dhaka, theres still simmering anger against the previous regime for all thats been lost. But this young nation of 170 Million people has now pinned its hopes now pinned its hopes on a new Interim Government. On a new Interim Government. It has a monumental task ahead. It has a monumental task ahead. Nikhil inamdar, nikhil inamdar, bbc news, dhaka. Bbc news, dhaka. Invasion of ukraine in 2022. Y bilateral trade between y bilateral trade between the two countries topped 240 Billion last year, up 26 on a year earlier. So has the Balance Of Power now shifted with russia relying more now on china rather than the other way round. Chris weafer runs a consultancy advising businesses in russia. Earlier i asked him whether anything substantial was expected to come out of this . Its now become this one here in vladivostok because of the shift in trade relations. But publicly, no, i wouldnt expect anything new. Behind the scenes, though, there will be fairly intense negotiations between the russian Side And China over the increasing difficulty with financial Cross Border transactions. The Us Treasury has really come down very heavy on countries, you know, to,try and prevent any, you know, sanctions busting using the financial system, which is making it difficult for russia to acquire goods and to get paid for goods. And russia is now looking for workarounds in cooperation with countries like china and india. And that that will be the main point of discussion, i think, at this event. And in terms of china, its Growth Story has been very much reliant on western countries buying its goods. So it has to tread pretty carefully with russia, doesnt it . Yes, absolutely. And we see this all the time. The chinese have never done anything overtly to break western sanctions. You know, of course, theres plenty of evidence that they try and find ways around it and that clearly the trade has grown, it shows that. But any time that china comes up against, you know, a clear sanctions risk, they back off immediately. And this is why, for example, we see now this difficulty with Cross Border financial transactions, that chinese banks will not take a risk of getting into trouble with the Us Treasury. So again, its all done kind of below the radar. Workarounds are very much the order of the day. Stay with us here on bbc news. Welcome back to bbc news. Lets turn to the us for the next few minutes.
