Officials have imposed sanctions on the two top editors of the russian state funded Broadcaster Rt accusing them of interfering with her than Thes President ial election. Eric garland said the goal was to secure moscows preferred outcome in the race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. These websites were designed to appear to american readers as if they were major us news sites, like the Washington Post or fox news, but in fact, they were fake sites. They were filled with russian Government Propaganda that had been created by the kremlin to reduce international support for ukraine, bolster pro russian policies and interests, and influence voters in the united states and in other countries. Internal documents of the kremlin described the content as, quote, Bogus Stories Disguised as newsworthy events, close quote. This malign Influence Campaign has been referred to as doppelganger. The russian Public Relations companies drove viewers to these websites by deploying influencers and paid Social Media advertisements. They also created fake Social Media profiles, posing as us citizens, post comments on Social Media platforms with links to the sites. According to sdas records, it actively sought to, quote, eliminate the possibility of detection of the russian footprint. Benjones is an election integrity consultant. Well, its quite a set of allegations. Criminal charges against two russian nationals. Sanctions on ten individuals and entities. The seizure of 32 internet domains. But perhaps most of all, the accusation that the State Broadcaster paid a Tennessee Firm 10 Million as part of these interference operations. Its a broad range of accusations, but nothing surprising, given the history. Its always very difficult to trace Cause And Effect when it comes to establishing whether or not these campaigns have success or not. But quite often, people tend to think of Election Interference as being about facilitating the victory of one or another candidate. But another aim of these operations can just be to decrease Peoples Trust in the democratic system, to increase polarisation, to give people the sense that the democratic system doesnt really work. And in that sense, even if they dont achieve their specific aims, those broader aims around the depletion of faith in democracy are always something that authoritarian actors aspire to. Thank you to benjones for thank you to Ben Jones for that. Now lets head to bangladesh. Its been one month since the dramatic ousting of prime minister sheikh hasina. Since then bangladesh s clothing factories that supply big Fast Fashion Brands like h m, Zara And Hugo boss, are limping back to normality. But the countrys new Interim Government faces long term economic challenges that will take years to fix. Nikhil inamdar has this special Ground Report from dhaka. Back up and running after political turmoil roiled the worlds second largest Source Market for ready garments. At this knitwear company, workers are in a race against time to finish up these christmas sweaters. The big concern at Garment Factories like these is not so much the short term monetary losses, but its really the reputational damage that bangladesh may suffer on the international stage. And the worry now is that long term political instability could mean cancelled orders and Supply Chains relocating to other parts of the world. This man, whose family founded this Export Unit 20 years ago, is worried. Translation bangladesh doesnt have enough dollar reserves. How will we pay for imports of yarn from India And China if we dont have forex . Customers arent able to visit for Order Placements either because they arent getting travel insurance. We might see a hit in the Spring Summer Season if there is a loss of confidence about the economy. Outside the Garment Factories, these students were part of the dramatic protests that brought down sheikh hasinas government. Theyve all been unemployed for more than two years. Translation the government should encourage the youth to join the private sector. We are hopeful because the new leader is an entrepreneur himself. Translation right now, | we do not get the right skills from our universities to get private jobs. We need to be better trained. Bangladeshs failure to do this comes into sharp focus at this deserted it park. An ambitious project launched in 2015, it was meant to house thousands of skilled techies who would help the country diversify and reduce its overreliance on garments. Ten years on, its almost completely empty. We have been investing in physical infrastructure, but how much we have invested in human infrastructure, right . Human resource are the Raw Material of this industry. From the new government, we need proper Planning And Investment in developing the right human resource. On the streets, theres still simmering anger against the previous regime for all thats been lost. But this young nation of 170 Million people has now pinned its hopes on a new Interim Government. It has a monumental task ahead. Nikhil inamdar, Bbc News. For more, heres our North America Business correspondent Ritika Gupta in new york. Nippon steels 14 Billion bid to acquire united States Steel has been caught in the crosshairs of an election year. And in the crucial Swing State of pennsylvania, where us steel is based. Us president Joe Biden has long pledged that the iconic american company, headquartered in pittsburgh, should remain domestically owned and run. Presidential nominees Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have also both committed to keep us steel american, though any move to block the deal could potentially be subject to litigation. Proponents of Nippon Steels bid say the us shouldnt reject a bid from a company based in an allied country such as japan especially one that could create an entity with the scale to compete with china. If the deal is successfully blocked, the fate of us steel is unclear. The company warn that it would imperil thousands ofjobs if the deal falls through. It may also close plants and even move its headquarters out of pittsburgh. Some of the days at the knees now. Other news now. Here in the uk, Water Company bosses could be banned from taking bonuses and even sent to jail, under new government legislation. The bill is set to give increased powers to regulators to act when companies pollute water, and it should make it easierfor them to give out fines. Our environment correspondent, jonah fisher, has more. For decades, both profits and sewage have flowed from englands privatised Water Companies. Dividends have been paid to shareholders and multi million Pound Pay packages to company bosses. Last year, the sewage spilled for 3. 6 million hours. But could things be about to change . This new legislation makes it easierfor the Environment Agency to take Enforcement Action and introduces tougher penalties for executives. If they obstruct an investigation, they could now face up to two years in jail. Bonuses for bosses will only be allowed if their companies arejudged by the regulator to have met both environmental and financial standards. What these new laws are doing is its bringing Back Accountability into a system where the public feel there has been no accountability whatsoever, despite the fact that last year we saw record levels of pollution in our rivers, lakes and seas. The previous government, for 1h years, let them get away with this. This new law gives the regulator the tough new powers they need to crack down on these kinds of abuses. But is it really the laws that have been the problem . Many campaigners say regulators should still have done more to investigate and take action over sewage spills. We actually have perfectly decent laws, perfectly, you know, acceptable legal framework. The problem is its never been enforced. And what this bill does is comes up with some nice emotive phrases, like Prison Sentences and banning bonuses and so on, but it doesnt address the fundamental problem. We have a set of regulations already and theyre not being enforced, and the only way theyre going to be enforced is by our regulators to be properly funded and empowered to do the job theyre supposed to be doing. This bill is an attempt by the government to tackle the worst excesses of the water industry, but it wont, on its own, stop the sewage spills. Thats going to take billions of pounds of investment in new infrastructure, and negotiations are continuing between the regulator and the Water Companies as to how much all of our bills are going to have to rise to pay for it. Jonah fisher, Bbc News. One of my roles, there was a logistical role in untangling everything in terms of fire engines, bringing in new crews, using the police, it was to walk around and see the cruise, a lot of them, a lot i knew at the scene, looking absolutely shell shocked. They were lying on the green in front of the building and they looked hollow. People were saying to me, governor, we did not think we were going to come on out of this. It was really harrowing. People were quoted as saying, we thought we would not come out of that, we thought the building was going to come down on top of us. One quote was, we wanted to get the people out or die trying. Organisationally, there was a disconnect, almost, from information that the government new, the civil service, and arguably people within the Fire Service nationally and in london, not filtering down to the people on the ground.
