Hello. Welcome to todays verified live. President biden has said that a final deal for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held in gaza is very close to being presented to israel and hamas by mediators. But he told reporters he did not think that the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was doing enough to secure an agreement. In israel itself, theres been a general strike to demand the government do more to free the hostages. Protesters say Mr Neta Nyahu must take responsibility for the deaths of six hostages whose bodies were recovered in gaza on saturday, israel says they were murdered by their captors and Mr Netanyahu said this showed hamas did not want a deal. Mr biden spoke to reporters as he arrived at the White House to meet us negotiators. Lets have a listen. I was following up on whats happening in israel, and then ill be off to pittsburgh. Are you planning to present a final Hostage Deal to both sides this week . Were very close to that. What makes you think that this deal will be successful in a way that the other deals were not . Hope springs eternal. Mr president , do you think its time for prime Minister Netanyahu to do more on this issue . Do you think hes doing enough . No. Mr president , what is your reaction to the demonstrations across israel . What is your reaction to the demonstrations . Im going to get the detail when i walk in, and ill talk to you after that. Do you have a message for the hostages families, sir . Yes. Ive spoken to the american hostages. I spoke to his mum and dad. As the strike went ahead in israel a court ordered people to end it and return to work. The nationwide industrial action caused Flight Delays and also hit medical centres, schools and businesses. Our diplomatic correspondent Paul Adams reports. Israel is boiling. The streets of Tel Aviv thronged with protesters again this morning, blocking the countrys main highway, pleading with the government to do more to bring israels remaining hostages home. Last night, on the same streets, despair turned to anger and violence. Saturdays shocking news that the bodies of six hostages previously thought to be alive, had been found in a tunnel in rafah, triggered fury at the Governments Failure to reach a deal, a deal which could have saved them. The fate of the hostages is tearing the country apart, many here accusing the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, of repeatedly throwing up obstacles to an agreement. Today, for the first time since the war began, a national strike, the countrys main airport briefly thrown into chaos with flights delayed or cancelled and baggage not loaded. A court ordered the strike to end a short time ago, the countrys largest union said it would comply. But with businesses closed, streets blocked by angry demonstrators and the government deeply divided over how to proceed in gaza, the sense of crisis is palpable. Paul adams, Bbc News correspondent. One of the bodies found one of the bodies found on saturday was that on saturday was that of american israeli hostage of american israeli Hostage Hersh Goldberg polin. Hersh goldberg polin. His father spoke at the funeral his father spoke at the funeral paying tribute to his son paying tribute to his son and calling for other and calling for other hostages to be released. Hostages to be released. The proverbial stone and what you would be and what you would be pushing for now is to pushing for now is to ensure that your death, ensure that your death, the deaths of all the soldiers the deaths of all the soldiers and so many innocent civilians and so many innocent civilians are not not in vain. Are not not in vain. And so many innocent and so many innocent civilians are not in vain. Civilians are not in vain. Your Starting Point would be your Starting Point would be returning all of the hostages. Returning all of the hostages. For 330 days, for 330 days, mama and i sought mama and i sought the proverbial stone that we could turn over to save you. Maybe, just maybe, your death is the stone. The fuel that will bring home the remaining 101 hostages. Professorjonathan Dekel Chen is the father of sagui, a hostage held in gaza. Hejoined me earlier emphasising the urgency of a deal. Its quite its been quite the day and i think things will only intensify moving and our Prime Minister have been selling to its own base this idea of total victory. And if we, you know, do do another Military Step of this kind or another, hamas eventually will come begging to simply give our hostages back. Clearly, thats not happened. We had six hostages we had six hostages and their bodies returned and their bodies returned to us yesterday. To us yesterday. Young Beautiful People who were young Beautiful People who were alive a few days beforehand. Level, give me an idea alive a few days beforehand. And last week we had another six, a group of six hostages and murdered hostages and murdered by hamas in recent months, by hamas in recent months, and all of whom could have been and all of whom could have been saved saved by having signed a deal by having signed a deal with hamas with the devil with hamas with the devil at an earlier stage. At an earlier stage. Ill come back to some of the ill come back to some of the political questions you raise in a moment, but on a human political questions you raise how frightening it is. Starting every day when you dont know whether youll end the day with terrible news. Well, i would hope its something that no parent or any Family Member can actually imagine. The pain of that. Knowing that your loved one is in the hands of a brutal, savage terrorists who conducted Mass Murder on October Seventh alone. Mass Murder And Mass rape in israel. And being totally at their mercy. We have no way of communicating with sagui. Theres no way to communicate with any of the hostages. Ill remind your viewers that hamas has denied red cross or red crescent or any other international organisation, access to these hostages since October Seventh. And we are perfectly aware that continued israeli Military Operations have very little chance of recovering any of these hostages alive. Those who remain alive. We know for sure that several dozen have already been murdered. And the israeli Military Operations, however, are most absolutely risking the Lives of the hostages every day and every hour. Theres no way of knowing exactly where the hostages are being held above or underground in the tunnels. So forfamilies, its a living nightmare. Let me return to where you started, because Benjamin Netanyahu keeps blaming hamas for the fact that there is no deal blaming them for the murders of the hostages over the weekend, saying freeing the hostages is his priority. When he says those things, what are you as a Family Member thinking . Well, you know, there is. Before that, or the other bodies that have been returned to israel by by the idf, that is hamas. Hamas sparked this horrific series of events that brings us to where we are. That is the core truth, and your viewers need to own that. That being said, we dont get to choose our adversaries and what we have is a fundamentalist islamist terrorist organisation. Not a country, not a state. Thats who we have to negotiate with. And it is through the good graces of intermediaries when an opportunity arises to get the deal done, it must get done. Israel has, for their own domestic political reasons, netanyahus government has netanyahus government has avoided and obstructed avoided and obstructed the finalisation of any kind the finalisation of any kind of agreement with the devil. Of agreement with the devil. And in order to avoid any but its who we have, but its who we have, and in order to avoid any more needless death of our hostages, and no less important, the civilians in gaza. The problem here, of course, is that hamas could have ended this On October Eighth by returning then 240 hostages ripped from their homes and could end it in half an hour right now by returning those hostages. But again, they are the adversary that we have. For more im joined now by columnist at the Haaretz Newspaper Gideon levy, whos in Tel Aviv. Welcome again to our programme. In terms of those huge protests, hundreds of thousands of people last Night And Today the general strike, are we approaching, do you think, any Sort Of Change Moment there in israel in terms of Government Policy . Israel in terms of Government Oli . ,. , policy . The coming days will show because policy . The coming days will show because right policy . The coming days will show because right now policy . The coming days will show because right now it i policy . The coming days will show because right now it is| policy . The coming days will. Show because right now it is a one day show, very impressive but without continuity, this will not change anything because one should understand those people protesting in the street, they are doing it in a very devoted way but it is not the political face of Benjamin Netanyahu. They will never vote for him. There is another camp who goes after Benjamin Netanyahu blindly and supports anything he says. This momentum which started yesterday, last night, can make a change and can continue but if it will fade out in the coming days that Benjamin Netanyahu can continue without any results. In terms of how israels Prime Minister has approached what is in front few days a minister of the past few days about Benjamin Netanyahu being an obstacle to making progress, what are your thoughts . Unfortunately i dont know if Benjamin Netanyahu still reads haaretz but he is not influenced by haaretz, that is for sure and you see it as one of those moments in which israel is divided and the camps are more or less the same size and Benjamin Netanyahu is still popular enough to continue his policy even though the streets are boiling and we are facing a turmoil we have not seen for many years and still he is the Prime Minister and quite a powerful one and he can lead us to further catastrophes and still be the Prime Minister, thatis still be the Prime Minister, that is the way it goes and the regime, the system. Regime, the system. That has been the regime, the system. That has been the dynamic regime, the system. That has been the dynamic for regime, the system. That has been the dynamic for much i regime, the system. That has been the dynamic for much of the last ten months. The one factor that always has the potential to change that dynamic is the united states and the Sort Of pressure to actually change the israeli policy. Do you think, when you hear within the last hour, Joe Biden say Benjamin Netanyahu has not done enough to get a deal on the hostages, does that have the potential, do you think, to change things . Let me tell ou think, to change things . Let me tell you something, think, to change things . Let me tell you something, matthew,. Tell you something, matthew, Joe Biden did not do enough. He did not do anything. Practically. Because im sure Bidens Heart is in the right place and im sure he is wishing to get to a ceasefire and to stopping this war. Im sure he cares about israel and im sure he cares about the humanitarian situation in gaza, which is not enough discussed here not when you are one party in a war and you supply them with ammunition and weapons in an almost unlimited way, do not tell me you want them to stop the war. That is not the way to make one party stopping the war by supplying more and more weapons and more and more ammunitions. It does not work like this. , , like this. Very briefly, when He Sa S like this. Very briefly, when he says he like this. Very briefly, when he says he thinks like this. Very briefly, when he says he thinks the like this. Very briefly, when he says he thinks the deal. Like this. Very briefly, when | he says he thinks the deal is very close, the quote in the last half hour, you would still be very sceptical because the us has been much more positive than the reality is that seem to be the case on the ground . That is the end of the season of talking. Biden is optimistic in the last two months and says the agreement is around the Corner And Nothing happens. Israel, as long as israel can continue to manage this war without any kind of price being paid, Benjamin Netanyahu will continue to do so and if Mr Biden wants really to stop this war, he knows very well how to do it, it is not by soft remarks like Benjamin Netanyahu is not doing enough. This is not the way to put an end to a war in which so many people lost their Lives. We war in which so many people lost their Lives. Lost their Lives. We have to leave it there lost their Lives. We have to leave it there but lost their Lives. We have to leave it there but thank lost their Lives. We have to | leave it there but thank you for joining leave it there but thank you forjoining us once again. Thank you and we are grateful for your time. The un Chidrens Charity Unicef says the first full day of a Mass Polio Vaccination campaign in gaza went well with more than Seventy Two Thousand children treated. Palestinians have been taking their children to three Health Centres in gaza in the first phase of the campaign. The aim is to vaccinate some 640,000 children. Dr richard peeperkorn, is the who representative for the occupied palestinian territory. He told me the scale of organisations taking part in the vaccination programme. Its a whole group of partners, the ministry of health, who, unicef, unrwa and i think Tens Of Ngos and community organisations. So we need to vaccinate in two rounds, a two round campaign. 640,000 children in in gaza. And we need to reach at least 90 Vaccination Coverage during each round to actually stop the outbreak in gaza and but and the transmission but also to prevent international spread of polio. So we welcome as well the so called area specific humanitarian pauses. So gaza divided in three zones for this Polio Campaign central gaza, south and the north. And in each zone we will focus three Days Campaign plus most likely another one, three plus one. And then we move to the other zone. So yesterday indeed we we started In The South over 2200 health workers. Community outreach workers. A massive operation, the Target Population in Central Zone is one of the 56,583 In The South. In Central Zone is 156,583 In The South. 340,000 in the north. In Central Zone is 156,583. In the south, 340,000. In the north 150,000. So how did it go yesterday . I think it was a good day in. In terms of the basic challenges you are facing. Tell me about that. Yeah. 0k. So first of all, i want to say it was a good day because i think more children were vaccinated than expected. We reached 86,683 out of the 157,000. And ijust want to make that point. Like i went out all over to seven or eight of these fixed sites, and i saw droves of of parents, fathers, mothers coming with enormous amounts of children. And actually it was a positive vibe in the street. For the first time ive seen that. Ive been five or six times in gaza for long periods since this crisis, and children actually happy that they got vaccinated and very clear. And today i was actually with some of these mobile teams and we went through maybe youve seen this coastal road and this endless, endless makeshift camps, and we went with this mobile teams through those camps and almost every other child was vaccinated. So that is the good news. Of course, the challenge is, is this an ideal campaign . No, its not we an ideal campaign is that you can plan it much better, that you can go House To house. Theres very few houses left in gaza also that we have more days. Around the world and across the uk. This is Bbc News. The so called Dynamic Pricing of tickets to gigs and concerts is going to be investigated by the government, after thousands of Oasis Fans complained they were charged extra after queing for hours for the bands reunion tour. The practice allows official Ticket Sellers to inflate prices when demand is high. Leigh milner s report does contain flashing images. First came the hype. When both come together, you have greatness. Then the disappointment. Millions of Oasis Fans spent Saturday Morning battling lengthy online queues and technical glitches in the hope of bagging tickets to next Years Reunion gigs. Many of those who did get through then faced another hurdle. Tickets costing hundreds of pounds more than expected thanks to so called Dynamic Pricing. Thats when high demand pushes up costs, a practice more commonly seen on taxi Hailing Apps or airline websites. The cheapest tickets were between 70 and 205, i think, which you can kind of Sort Of, well, yeah, ok, thats not too bad. But then the only ones that were available were the platinum, so it was like £500. We didnt want to pay that. So, um, no. So were not going. Im a Rock And Roll star. The government had already pledged a consultation to tackle ticket touting, thats the resale of tickets by secondary vendors. I said maybe youre gonna be the one that saves me. Now it says it will add Dynamic Pricing, which is done by the primary vendors, to that consultation. This must be welcome news. Dynamic pricing was an odious Business Product that was brought over from North America and really does disadvantage a significant number of consumers. Its vitally important that government actually understands how this industry works, not just what theyre told by ticket companies. You gotta Roll With It you gotta take your time. The society of Ticket Agents and retailers has stressed that Ticket Prices are set by artists and their management. Whoever s responsible, Music Fans will be hoping prices come down. Leigh milner, Bbc News. pres the german chancellor has urged Mainstream Parties the german chancellor has urged Mainstream Parties not to lend support to the far right alternative for germany Party Or Afd which he called extremist. Olaf scholz described afd s success in thringia and strong showing in saxony as worrying and said the party was dividing society. The afd has become the first far right group to win the most votes in a State Election since the second world war. Lets speak to thomas matussek, chairman of the german British Society and former german ambassador to the uk, the un and india. Thank you for being with us, how worrying are the results . They are very worrying because that was a Rude Awakening that we have an extremely far right party winning two State Elections, by far the biggest party in sa but also in saxony the second. It is a slap in the face of the three parties who form the government in berlin and the reasons for this rude shock are threefold, first of all the great worry and and satisfaction with the immigration policy. We have about 200,000 people who should not be in germany either about 200,000 people who should not be in germany either because the Asylum Request was eligible anyway people who should because the Asylum Request was denied or they were not denied or they were not eligible anyway and we cannot get them somehow out of the country and the second is especially in the east, very soft stance on russia. Lets negotiate with the russian bear, lets not provoke him any longer, stop the Weapons Delivery to ukraine, start negotiations and that somehow this problem will go away and third of all great unhappiness with the personal Well Being of the people who see that public services are not running well, they see the cost of living, schools, decaying infrastructure so all in all, it is a sign of deep Unhappiness And Dissatisfaction with the people in berlin. In many senses you have described the same triggers were seen in so many different European Countries so in terms of Olaf Sholz, why was he countries so in terms of Olaf Sholz, w some he countries so in terms of Olaf Sholz, w some ofe countries so in terms of Olaf Sholz, w some of this . Is mitigate some of this . What is going wrong when it comes from the german Government And Chancellor . Chancellor . First volume have three parties that chancellor . First volume have three parties that are three parties that are different from Each Other and just because they are different, they are the only ones to forge the painful compromises to bring germany forward, out of the standstill of 16 years of merkel and the other thing is you need a chancellor who is a leader and this is certainly something Olaf Sholz is not, he is a Bystander Who from time to time makes a comment that he does not force these three actors in this coalition together to get policies through but what people see every day is here we have a government that calls with Each Other without getting things done. We with Each Other without getting things done with Each Other without getting things done. We are out of time but im grateful things done. We are out of time but im grateful for things done. We are out of time but im grateful for your things done. We are out of time but im grateful for your time i but im grateful for your time here on Bbc News. That is the Challenge Front and Centre And Youll watch that story here in europe and in germany. The business headlines on next. Good afternoon. Today is a classic transition day, weather wise. A change is taking place from the very warm and humid air that brought some of us temperatures of up to 30 degrees yesterday, to some cooler and fresher conditions heading in from the west for the middle part of the week. But as that transition takes place, the Cooler Air bumping into the warm and humid air, we have a lot of Mist And Murk out there some very gloomy scenes across many parts of the uk and also some outbreaks of rain. This is a really messy transition. Yes, we have low pressure in charge, but various different frontal systems bringing showers or longer spells of rain. It does look like this heavy and persistent rain will continue to move North Eastwards. The chance of some thunderstorms across the North East of scotland. As things brighten up further south and west we will see some sharp showers again, with the potential for some heavy downpours and some thunder and lightning. Still up to the middle 20s across eastern england. Cooler and fresher further north and west. As we go through this evening and tonight, we will continue to see those areas of Showery Rain Pushing Northwards and eastwards. Some clearer spells spreading from the west. I think we will keep a fair amount of cloud, perhaps some Mist And Murk around here and there. Another rather warm night In The South east corner, but a much cooler, fresher one further north and west. That fresher air will continue to make Progress Southwards and eastwards during tomorrow. This band of cloud and patchy rain affecting parts of Western Scotland and northern ireland, perhaps into North West England and parts of north wales. Some cloud and showers further south and east, but equally some spells of sunshine and those temperatures 16 for aberdeen and for glasgow, 22 in london. This big area of High Pressure in the atlantic is going to try to extend its influence for the middle part of the week. Still, though, some weak frontal zones in the picture, so that means a lot of dry weather, thanks to that area of High Pressure, but those weak weather fronts still bringing some areas of cloud and some bits and pieces of showery rain at times. Those temperatures will be lower 14 to 21 degrees covers things north to south for the middle of the week. For the end of the week, well, there is a lot of uncertainty about the detail, but it looks like low pressure may develop to the south of the uk bringing some outbreaks of rain, with some drier conditions further north.
