The incursion of ukraine will not stop his armys advances. Hello, im annita mcveigh. Welcome to Bbc News now, three hours of fast moving news, interviews and reaction. The industrial action to reach a Hostage Deal with hamas hit medical centres, schools and businesses. People are demanding the government secure the return of hostages still held by hamas. The Israel Defense forces say. Say they were killed shortly before troops reached them on saturday. One of those found was american israeli Hersh Goldberg Polin. Injerusalem where people are holding a procession from his home to the cemetary where he will be buried. Well the impact of todays strikes arent yet fully clear. Flights have been delayed and diverted at israels main airport as part of the strike action. Israel is boiling, the Main Highway Being blocked with the government been told to do more to bring the remaining hostages home. Last night, on the same streets, despair turned to anger and violence. Saturdays shocking news that the bodies of six hostages, previously thought to be alive, has been found in a Tunnel In Rafah triggered fury that a deal could be done to save them. The fate of the hostages are tearing the country apart, and here the prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu being accused of repeatedly throwing up accused of repeatedly throwing up obstacles to an agreement. There is a strike and the countrys main airport has been thrown into chaos with baggage not being loaded and flights being cancelled. The court ordered the strike to end a short time ago with the countrys largest union saying it would comply but with businesses closed, streets blocked by angry demonstrators and the government deeply divided over how to proceed in gaza, a sense of crisis is palpable. It is fairto it is fair to say the strike, while widespread, and affected affecting every municipality in the country is not as devastating as those protesters really a show of Grief And Anger at the government for not concluding a deal. We have not seen that to the momentum of a degree that people would have wanted and as such about how much political pressure will be put on the government. That is a key question. Put on the government. That is a key question, how put on the government. That is a key question, how much a key question, how much pressure does it put on and will lead to some sort of change in policy . Several more protests have been planned as well over israel today. Well over israel today. They are determined well over israel today. They are determined to well over israel today. They are determined to keep well over israel today. They j are determined to keep this going and as we saw anger is palpable. We saw the first degree of Shock And Condemnation going to hamas which is a given for having murdered the hostages under its care but many people, not all, but many people in this country feel that after nearly 11 months of this conflict the government could have done more should have done more to conclude a deal. The prime minister saying your very clearly the fact that these hostages were killed shows that hamas does not want a deal and he is determined to continue to what he calls total victory but several people within his own administration, some of the Hostage Negotiators who have been speaking anonymously, and other people within his office, saying he, himself, is trying to block a deal that would leave hamas in any way intact and because of that we are still 11 months into this conflict without a Hostage Negotiation and without the 100 Orso Negotiation and without the 100 or so who remain Inside Gaza both alive and dead on the israeli side being released. Udi goren is the cousin of tal haimi, who was killed on the seventh october and his body taken by hamas. Mr goren gave me his reaction to the protests and strike. As far as we are concerned, the report can decide whether a Protest Or Strike really does the other businesses who have abided by the court. There is a strong sentiment among the israeli public that this government does not represent the vast majority of the public in its decision not to have a deal that would bring the hostages back then, at this point, i think we are allowed to do what we think is right in order to do what is right and thatis order to do what is right and that is saving peoples lives. Yourjoining us from the protest so give us a feel of what it feels like to be in the midst of that today. I what it feels like to be in the midst of that today. Midst of that today. I am Oininu Midst of that today. I am joining you midst of that today. I am joining you right midst of that today. I am joining you right now midst of that today. I am | joining you right now from midst of that today. I am joining you right now from the israeli parliament where we come hostage families, come every week to speak in the different committees and speak to the Parliament Members directly and try to break some of these alliances that the influence, the ministers and Parliament Members these way and there will be another funeral today, weve had six funerals in the past two days of the hostages that were just murdered three days ago and from the funeral i will be going to another protest later tonight in front of the prime ministers home. We tonight in front of the prime ministers home. Ministers home. We have reported ministers home. We have reported on ministers home. We have reported on many ministers home. We have| reported on many protests ministers home. We have reported on many protests by the Hostages Family members and the family of the bereaved. It has not because the government so far to change its position, will be action to Date Change that, do you think . I do not think there is one specific action that will change their mind, i think the main thing is Persistence And Thatis main thing is persistence and that is true to any public campaign is that it is persistence, believing in what is right and believing in what we are doing and i think after 11 months of this war, the longest israel has ever had, and that this point, we know where the divides are between israel and hamas in terms of the deal and we know these gaps can be bridged then we need to say over and over again, and when i say we, that is not of the israeli public and the foreign governments having to do with this conflict that have influenced over the israeli government, over hamas and we should all be saying enough is enough and we need to end this war and safety s lives and bring the hostages back and bring the hostages back and bring some alleviation to the gazans and make sure we have an agreement that secures israels future and ensure that 0ctober seven does not happen all over again and it has to do with a regional deal that would keep israel safe and on the other hand if we start to rebuild gaza because the gazans are suffering at this time and the fates of these two people have been linked for ages now and its more obvious than ever at this point in time. The un chidren s Charity Unicef says the first full day of a Mass Polio Vaccination campaign in gaza went well with more than Seventy Two Thousand children treated. Palestinians have been taking their children to three Health Centres in gaza in the first phase of the campaign. The aim is to vaccinate some 640,000 children. So was day one of the roll out a success . Louise wateridge is with the un Relief Agency for palestinians, unrwa and was there. It was incredibly relieving to see so many children and families turn out for the vaccination yesterday morning. I visited and unrwa Health Facility and it was generally a positive atmosphere for families towards the polio vaccination, a lot of the parents expressing their relief that this vaccine was available but of course we have these periodic humanitarian causes and we need a ceasefire. Having these pauses, strikes this morning, strikes yesterday afternoon, it is still a very tense atmosphere here in the Gaza Strip and it was a little weird yesterday, to be honest, i think everybody noticed to go even an hour without hearing a Bomb Or Strike is something weve not experienced for weeks. To go one day without having Evacuation Orders issued,it having Evacuation Orders issued, it was very unusual after what weve experienced the last two weeks so it is great this humanitarian pause has so far been respected but we need a ceasefire now. The german chancellor has urged mainstream parties not to lend support to the far right alternative for germany Party Or Afd which he called extremist. 0laf Scholz described afd s success in thuringia and strong showing in saxony as worrying and said the party was dividing society. Its become become the first far right grouping to win the most votes in a Election'>State Election since the second World War. Lets speak to Michaela KuefnerChief Political Editor at Deutsche Welle news. Thank you very much forjoining us on Bbc News. Notable result for the afd but how influential can they be if other parties will not work with them . They cannot really will not work with them . They cannot really be will not work with them . They cannot really be that will not work with them . They cannot really be that terribly l cannot really be that terribly influential and effective normally if they were a party and other parties were willing to cooperate in the state where they won the Elections outright, they would be expected to now lead to negotiations for a Governing Coalition and that will not happen. In the neighbouring region, they are the second largest party if not seen as right wing extremists and other parties were willing to cooperate with them, they would be in the game for forming a government so it is a resounding victory for the Afd Numerically but also different in the way they are viewed here in the way they are viewed here in the way they are viewed here in the german public debate and political sphere because it significantly increases their clout that they have in shaping the political agenda and pushing their own interests and narratives which they felt they saw reassured and proven by a Terrorist Attack happened just a week ahead of those Elections where a rejected Asylum Seeker from syria stabbed to death in three people and injured eight others so this is the climate this all took place in and it place in and it is a victory, a very regional this all took place in and it is a victory, a very regional one with only 8 of germans one with only 8 of germans having been the population in having been the population in those two states, that actually voted, but a significant historic victory for a far right party here in germany which actually happened to the day 85 years before germany attacked poland and started World War ii. D0 attacked poland and started World War ii. Attacked poland and started World War ii. Do you think the attitudes of World War ii. Do you think the attitudes of other World War ii. Do you think the attitudes of other Politicians L attitudes of other politicians Might Change over time . There was a lot of Might Change over time . There was a lot of soulsearching was a lot of soul searching here today but what we are seeing is particularly members of the Governing Coalition of 0laf Scholz s coalition of the social democrats, greens and the liberal free democrats trying to stick together and at the same time saying we need to change policy unless or else the far right will be strengthened here in germany so it has been a moment of reckoning for the political centre but also particularly for 0laf Scholz s germany, not representative for germany, thatis not representative for germany, that is really important to note, the far right afd got upwards of 30 in those two Elections and nationwide it is only about 16 but a hugely not just symbolic but psychological victory that has left its mark on everyone in the political sphere here. Around the world and across the uk. This is Bbc News. Inspectors will no longer Rate State schools in england with one word grades, like outstanding or inadequate. A new system of School Reports by 0fsted will be introduced from next september. The family of Head Teacher Ruth perry had lobbied for the change after she took her own life in 2023, after her school was given the lowest rating. 0ur Education Editor branwen jeffreys reports. The first day back at school and a bit of a surprise. Notjust for these year1 pupils but for their parents and schools. Headline grades for inspections scrapped. The Education Secretary says they will still step in to maintain standards when needed. I think the system that weve got at the Momentjust Isnt working for parents, where the information that theyre given just isnt enough and where it comes to staff, its too high stakes. So i wont hesitate to intervene in schools that are failing because i am determined to drive up standards in our schools, but the case for 0fsted Reform is clear and we are delivering on the commitment that we made in our manifesto for a better system to support children and families. After an inspection, Caversham Primary was due to be downgraded. The school was good in many ways but inspectors raised concerns. The Head Teacher, ruth perry, took her life while waiting for that report, tormented by the prospect of an inadequate grade. An inquest found the inspection contributed to mrs perrys suicide. Her sister, julia, is delighted one or two word grades are being scrapped. Shed had a really bruising inspection that left her very fragile. And that word, inadequate, she went over and over and over it, repeated it, she wrote it down and it was that feeling, not just that shed had the terrible Shock And Trauma of a completely unexpected bad 0fsted but that she was still anticipating the public humiliation that would come with that. Have you had a chance to share the news with the rest of your family . Yes, and they are delighted. Ruths daughters in particular werejust, you know, well done. It really, really shouldnt have been like this. It really should not take a bereaved Family Member to push for change and to push for change for such a long time, but yes, its this. A relief really that no other Head Teacher will have to go through what ruth went through. So from today, overall Inspection Grades are scrapped, like good or inadequate. School inspection standards remain the same and from september 2025, there will be a new Report Card for parents. Education unions welcomed the change and said parents will still get clear reports this year. The Inspection System remains broadly the same at the moment and it will give a full report on performance of The School right now. Itjust removes the high Stakes Nature thats been so damaging and what we will do now is build a new system through 0fsted, through government and through the profession to make sure parents really get what they need. Parents and teachers will get a say in the design of the new Report Card. It will have to prove it works just as well or better to help schools improve and parents choose the best school for their child. Russia has launched another barrage of strikes across kyiv. The ukrainian Air Force says it destroyed more than a0 missiles and drones targeting the capital. A Metro Station being used as a shelter, a Water Treatment Plant and this university Sports Complex were among the infrastructure hit. Authorities say three people were injured. Ukraines Surprise Incursion last month was the biggest Military Operation into russia since the second World War but has so far failed to ease the huge Pressure Ukraine is experiencing on its eastern Home Front and kyiv now faces tough strategic choices about where to commit its troops. Nick beake travelled to the regions bordering russia and gained access to the latest ukrainian army recruits at a secret Training Camp as they prepare to join the battle. After two and a half years of defence, ukraine says its on the attack, but is waiting for greater Back Up from the west. A month ago, these new recruits were on the farm, on the building site, far from the trenches. Now theyre being fast tracked to the Front Line and next up could bejoining the ukrainian incursion into russia. Translation i think this is the right thing to do. I look how long theyve been on our land. You cantjust sit there while they are capturing our territory. What will we do then . Will we become their slaves . The ukrainian military, anxious that the location of this training remains secret, asked to see our footage before broadcast but did not see our script. Ukraine is on the back foot in key parts of the battlefield at home, but the recent incursion into russia has given a big Morale Boost and its also given this war a new dimension. More troops are being recruited and trained, but at the same time, ukraine now faces tough strategic decisions. Will they be sent to the east of ukraine, where moscow is seizing more land by throwing Tens Of Thousands of troops into battle . Or will they be sent to russias Kursk Region to hold the recent gains . These were the first ukrainian soldiers to go into kursk, helping to seize more than 100 settlements and capture 600 russian prisoners of war, according to kyiv. The men here, filmed in action, are now back. Regrouping. We met them just a few miles from the russian border. Translation we went far into the Kursk Region. We were alone as the forward team. We were on foreign soil and we felt like foreigners. Do you know how long youll be on russian territory when you go back . Translation well be there as long as we are told to. If we have an order to move forward, we can get to moscow and will show what ukraine is all about, what our guys are like, real cossacks. After quickly losing land at home, russia has been fighting back, targeting ukrainian positions. Kyiv had hoped that moscow would divert thousands of troops from the east of ukraine to defend kursk, but that hasnt happened. But that hasnt happened. Known by the Call Sign known by the Call Sign producer, this father of two producer, this father of two hasnt seen his children hasnt seen his children in three years. In three years. A common story. Vladimirovich, is a common story. Instead, hes been busy recovering ukrainian instead, hes been busy recovering ukrainian vehicles recently damaged vehicles recently damaged or destroyed inside russia. Or destroyed inside russia. One man, putin vladimir one man, putin vladimir vladimirovich, is attacking our country. And what we have to do, we have only to defend our home. Through taking the fight into russia, Ukraine Galvanised its public. And worried some allies, fearful of president putins response. But President Zelenskyy warns time is not on their side and that Greater Western Help must arrive, with kyiv now fighting on yet another front. Nick beake, Bbc News in northeastern ukraine. Parliament returns after the Summer Break and the prime minister has defended the plan to scrap the Winter Fuel Payment for a of pensioners, it was not in labours Election manifesto. It is worth remembering this was a policy announced just before mps broke up announced just before mps broke up for the summer announced just before mps broke Upforthe Summerand announced just before mps broke up for the summer and they are back today and many say over the intervening period their E Mail inboxes have been deluged by constituents are worried about the implications of this decision but as far as Sir Keir Starmer is concerned and many of those new labour mps are concerned, this is just symptomatic of the often grim incisions that they will have to make because of what they say they have inherited from their conservative predecessors and that is very much a line of arguing from the prime minister when he was speaking jUst A Little while ago. We when he was speaking Ust A Little while ago. when he was speaking Ust A Little while ago. We have found a £22 billion little while ago. We have found a £22 billion black little while ago. We have found a £22 billion Black Hole in the l a £22 billion Black Hole in the economy and we have got to fix it. What we are not going to do is pretend it is not there or paper over it, that is what the last government did and it made things worse. We have to make tough choices and i did not want to cut the Fuel Allowance and i dont think anyone does what we have to fix the gaps in our economy which is what this is about, fixing the foundations and then having done that we can build a better future that pensioners come in so many other people voted for in this Election. In this Election. Despite holdin in this Election. Despite holding firm, in this Election. Despite holding firm, there in this Election. Despite holding firm, there are | in this Election. As he got older, his assuredness devolved into deep independent Thinking And Hersh thought about issues and develop principal conclusions and in Sixth Grade as a group interview, the teenager posed a question to the visiting Sixth Grade boys, something about six great politics and he offered a liberal answer or a more consultative answer sending the boys who answered each two different size of the room and that Night Hersh told us about the interview and that he went to the side of the room that he did and we said, how many others were on your side . He shrugged and said just me. Ten years ago at his encouragement, after hersh learned about this issue, family took to the streets to fight to protect the rights of african Asylum Seekers. This was after hersh searched our house and declared to us if the police get really aggressive in pursuing them, we can hide at least one in each dishwasher. And the second part of the mission, judge all people with the benefit of the doubt. A wise diplomat we met on this excruciating 330 Day Journey told us, you obviously do not have to agree with the other side on the issue but you must truly take the time to understand them. Weve learned increasingly in these 11 months how much Hersh Exemplified the guidance. The friends, former campus of hersh and people he met at various Music Festivals and so much more across nationalities, religions and ages have reached out to us to tell us, of course they always had a great time hanging out with hersh but they also thoroughly enjoyed real, meaningful conversations in which he stretched their thinking. Good afternoon. Today is a classic transition day, weather wise. A change is taking place from the very warm and humid air that brought some of us temperatures of up to 30 degrees yesterday, to some cooler and fresher conditions heading in from the west for the middle part of the week. But as that transition takes place, the Cooler Air bumping into the warm and humid air, we have a lot of Mist And Murk out there some very gloomy scenes across many parts of the uk and also some outbreaks of rain. This is a really messy transition. Yes, we have low pressure in charge, but various different frontal systems bringing showers or longer spells of rain. It does look like this heavy and persistent rain will continue to move North Eastwards. The chance of some thunderstorms across the North East of scotland. As things brighten up further south and west we will see some sharp showers again, with the potential for some heavy downpours and some thunder and lightning. Still up to the middle 20s across eastern england. Cooler and fresher further north and west. As we go through this evening and tonight, we will continue to see those areas of Showery Rain Pushing Northwards and eastwards. Some clearer spells spreading from the west. I think we will keep a fair amount of cloud, perhaps some Mist And Murk around here and there. Another rather warm night in the south east corner, but a much cooler, fresher one further north and west. That fresher air will continue to make Progress Southwards and eastwards during tomorrow. This band of cloud and patchy rain affecting parts of Western Scotland and northern ireland, perhaps into North West England and parts of north wales. Some cloud and showers further south and east, but equally some spells of sunshine and those temperatures 16 for aberdeen and for glasgow, 22 in london. This big area of High Pressure in the atlantic is going to try to extend its influence for the middle part of the week. Still, though, some weak frontal zones in the picture, so that means a lot of dry weather, thanks to that area of High Pressure, but those weak weather fronts still bringing some areas of cloud and some bits and pieces of showery rain at times. Those temperatures will be lower 1a to 21 degrees covers things north to south for the middle of the week. For the end of the week, well, there is a lot of uncertainty about the detail, but it looks like low pressure may develop to the south of the uk bringing some outbreaks of rain, with some drier conditions further north
