Hello, im geeta guru murthy, thanks forjoining us. The stoppage is a day after the Israeli Army says it has recovered the bodies of six hostages who were taken during the attacks of the 7th of october. That led to mass Demonstrations Injerusalem and Tel Aviv on sunday. Organisers are calling on Benjamin Netanyahu to negotiate a deal with hamas to bring home the estimated 100 remaining hostages. Sundays protests were largely peaceful but some crowds broke through police lines, blocking a major highway in Tel Aviv. Our correspondent is following the story. After the biggest protests in israel since the start of the war in gaza with hundreds of thousands of people demonstrating across the country, today a general strike. So thousands of businesses Will Be closed, some schools, universities, government ministries, banks, some bus networks, so we are expecting a major hit on the Economy Today in israel. The outrage against hamas is a given but these protests are not about that, they are against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is accused of pursuing his own personal political ambitions and his survival in sacrifice of a Hostage Release and Ceasefire Deal in gaza. Benjamin netanyahu insists the best way to get the remaining hostages out of gazais get the remaining hostages out of gaza is to keep applying pressure on hamas. However, many people in israel dont feel that way including some of the hostage families. They have accused Mr Netanyahu of having the blood of Loved Ones on his hands. There was chanting of murderer at the protest, and its notjust murderer at the protest, and its not just the murderer at the protest, and its notjust the public, it is also within his own government. We have had reports in the last week of a Shouting Match between the Prime Minister and his Defence Minister, who says that in effect Mr Netanyahu is blocking this deal with hamas that the worlds diplomats have been pursuing now for weeks and months. Mr netanyahu Up To now has rejected that pressure and he says that it is hamas who are the murderers and that they Will Be pursued and punished. John donnison, our correspondent there. Lets speak to the former conservative Mp Alistair Burt who also served as Minister Of State for the middle east. When we look at events in israel with these protests today, what political effect do you think that might have . The political effect do you think that might have . Political effect do you think that miuhthave . ,. , , political effect do you think that miuhthave . , might have . The scale of protests is certainly unprecedented. Might have . The scale of protests is certainly unprecedented. There might have . The scale of protests is certainly unprecedented. There has| certainly unprecedented. There has been thousands of people demonstrating regularly against prime Minister Netanyahu firstly Fur Internal political reasons, then post October The 7th lately in terms of his handling of the crisis, but the scale of the protest and the sense that the prime Ministers Strategy after October The 7th of seeking total victory of the elimination of hamas and the recovery of the hostages has proved to be a failure because it was impossible. He was advised that you couldnt do both and that advice has been borne out by experience and the circumstances of the murders of the six hostages that have been reported have just increased the anguish of many of the population of israel. Thats what we have seen. Whether it will change prime Minister Netanyahus policy is difficult to estimate because he is trapped by some in his cabinet who do not want him to make a deal with hamas, the extreme right wing ministers, and he himself has set on a course where he can only succeed by delivering what he has already promised even if its impossible so its very hard to say what the immediate impact on the politics Will Be. find what the immediate impact on the politics Will Be. What the immediate impact on the politics Will Be. And even if he was to be swayed politics Will Be. And even if he was to be swayed by politics Will Be. And even if he was to be swayed by these politics Will Be. And even if he was to be swayed by these protests, i politics Will Be. And even if he was. To be swayed by these protests, when activists say they want a hamas hostage deal, have they spelt out exactly what they are prepared to concede for that . Exactly what they are prepared to concede for that . Hostage families and friends in concede for that . Hostage families and friends in israel concede for that . Hostage families and friends in israel that concede for that . Hostage families and friends in israel that i concede for that . Hostage families and friends in israel that i have and friends in israel that i have spoken to and many people have said theyjust spoken to and many people have said they just want the hostages spoken to and many people have said theyjust want the hostages back. The terms of the deal are of less consequence at present than physically returning those hostages that are still alive and sadly the remains of those who are not, and the desperation that was evident on the desperation that was evident on the faces and the comments of the families at the weekend. The assumption is it Will Be a Dealfor The Return of Palestinian Prisoners being held by israelis both on the West Bank and elsewhere, but the actual terms of the deal seem to matter less to people protesting than just the desperation to get the hostages back. And they feel strongly that the priority that should be allocated to getting the hostages back has not been the priority of prime Minister Netanyahu and the government, hence the vehemence of the demonstrations and the anger of the Defence Minister of the anger of the Defence Minister of the way in which the coalition is handling the crisis at present. Its handling the crisis at present. Its obvious as to why families and friends of the hostages will prioritise that, but the government also has to balance the future security of israel as it sees it. Thats right. Everything since October The 6th has changed. It would appear the security of the state of israel had predicated on dividing the Palestinian Leadership community. It is supporting hamas covertly in gaza, preventing the establishment of a Palestinian State has fallen apart, and the anger in israel is directed at the failure of that overall political policy as well as the atrocity that took place on October The 7th for which hamas bears responsibility. So the wider security of israel is indeed in question now, and that calls for a different political solution which will require israel to think of an overall settlement which will involve the West Bank, East Jerusalem as well as gaza and it will require the abandonment of those who believe that the extinction of the state of israel is still possible. So a lot of political change is necessary in order to secure the Peace And Security of israel to which it is entitled as well as the Self Determination of the palestinian people and justice for them. Its not impossible and discussions have always vaulted when they have got difficult, but if there was ever a time to press the case, its now. There was ever a time to press the case. Its ow case, its now. Alistair burt, Thank Ou for case, its now. Alistair burt, thank you for being case, its now. Alistair burt, thank you for being with case, its now. Palestinians have been taking their children to three Health Centres in gaza in the first phase of the campaign. The aim is to vaccinate some 640,000 children. So, was it seen as a success . Louise wateridge is with the un Relief Agency for palestinians, unrwa and was there. It was incredibly relieving to see so many families turn out for the vaccination. I visited a School Term Shelter and went from the teams went with the teams from tent to tent. It was a positive reaction from the families and a lot of parents expressed relief that the vaccination was available, but we have these periodic humanitarian causes and we need a ceasefire. Having these pauses, we have had strikes this morning and there were strikes this morning and there were strikes yesterday afternoon. But it still a tense atmosphere in the gaza strip. It was weird yesterday, i think everybody noticed to go even in our without a bomb or a strike is something we havent had four weeks. To go even a day without Evacuation Orders issued. So its great this humanitarian pause has so far been respected but we need a ceasefire now. ,. ,. , now. Let me show you the live ictures now. Let me show you the live pictures where now. The first case to be identified with polio in gaza in 25 years, and that is why there is this priority now to protect those children in gaza with this Polio Vaccine Roll out. One or two Word Inspection assessments for englands schools are being scrapped with immediate effect. Last year, an inquest found an inspection by the education standards office, ofsted, had contributed to the suicide of a Headteacher Leading to widespread calls for change. The government said the overall grades werent fair or accurate, but the change was criticised by the conservatives for removing a vital indicator for parents. Heres our Education Editor Branwen jeffreys. After an inspection, Caversham Primary was due to be downgraded. The school was good in many ways, but inspectors raised concerns. The headteacher, ruth perry, took her life while waiting for that report, tormented by the prospect of an inadequate grade. An inquest found the inspection contributed to mrs perrys suicide. Her sisterjulia is delighted one or two word grades are being scrapped. She had a really bruising inspection that left her very fragile and that word, inadequate, just, she went over and over and over it. She kept repeating it, she wrote it down. And it was that feeling, notjust that shed had the terrible Shock And Trauma of a completely unexpected bad ofsted, but that she was still anticipating the public humiliation that would come with that. Have you had a chance to share the news with the rest of your family . Yes, and they are delighted. Ruths daughters in particular werejust, you know, well done. You know, it really, really shouldnt have been like this. It really should not take a bereaved Family Member to push for change and to push for change for such a long time. But yes, its this. A relief, really, that no other Head Teacher will have to go through what ruth went through. So from today, overall Inspection Grades are scrapped, like good or inadequate. School inspection standards remain the same. And from september 2025, there Will Be a new Report Card for parents. Education unions welcomed the change and said parents will still get clear reports this year. The Inspection System remains broadly the same at the moment, and it will give a full report on the performance of The School right now. Itjust removes the high Stakes Nature thats been so damaging. And what we will do now is build a new system through ofsted, through government and through the profession to make sure parents really get what they need. Parents and teachers will get a say in the design of the new Report Card. It will have to prove it works just as well or better to help schools improve, and parents choose the best school for their child. Branwen jefferys, bbc news. Theres been another wave of russian missile and Drone Attacks on ukraine with kyiv hit several times. The citys mayor, vitali klitschko, said the entrance of a metro station, which was being used as a shelter, was struck, as well as a water treatment plant. Military officials said Air Defence units had destroyed 22 out of 35 missiles, and 20 out of 23 attack drones, spread across six of ukraines regions. Two people were injured. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. The Uk Government has promised to look into the problems caused by so called Dynamic Pricing of tickets to gigs and concerts. The practice which allows official Ticket Sellers to inflate prices when demand is high will now be included in a planned consultation on protecting fans from ticket touts. Over the weekend, hundreds of thousands of people queued online for hours as they tried to buy Oasis Tickets as Leigh Milner reports. A warning there are flashing images coming up. First came the hype. When both come together, you have greatness. Then the disappointment. Millions of Oasis Fans spent Saturday Morning battling lengthy online queues and technical glitches in the hope of bagging tickets to next Years Reunion gigs. Many of those who did get through then faced another hurdle. Tickets costing hundreds of pounds more than expected thanks to so called Dynamic Pricing. Thats when high demand pushes up costs, a practice more commonly seen on taxi Hailing Apps or airline websites. The cheapest tickets were between 70 and 205, i think, which you can kind of Sort Of, well, yeah, ok, thats not too bad. But then the only ones that were available were the platinum, so it was like £500. We didnt want to pay that so, um, no. So were not going. Tonight im a Rock And Roll star. The government had already pledged a consultation to tackle ticket touting. Thats the resale of tickets by secondary vendors. So maybe youre gonna be The One that saves me. Now it says it will add Dynamic Pricing, which is done by the primary vendors, to that consultation. This must be welcome news. Dynamic pricing was an odious Business Product that was brought overfrom North America and really does disadvantage a significant number of consumers. Its vitally important that government actually understands how this industry works, not just what theyre told by ticket companies. You gotta roll with it, you gotta take your time. The society of Ticket Agents and retailers has stressed that Ticket Prices are set by artists and their management. Whoever s responsible, Music Fans Will Be hoping prices come down. Leigh milner, bbc news. The german Chancellor Olaf Scholz has urged mainstream parties not to lend support to the alternative for germany, the first far right party projected to win a State Election since the second world war. The afd appears to have done well in thuringia and also in saxony. Other parties have said they wont help it form a Governing Coalition. Lets speak to our correspondent in berlin, damien mcguiness. So what we have seen in thuringia is that the afd has. Been. So what we have seen in i thuringia is that the afd has won the most votes, which is around 33 , getting in The End of the third of all seats of the parliament. And in saxony they came a close second but also have ended up with pretty much almost a third of the seats in parliament. So both results are seen as historic, thats why the afd are celebrating, but it leads to a political problem in saxony. Because even though no other party will work with the afd because it is seen so extreme and some leaders are seen as toxic, so that means they wont get into government but it will make forming a Coalition Government very difficult because the other parties will find it very hard to cobble together a majority, there Will Be some very uncomfortable alliances for example with conservatives having to come together with radical leftists which they wouldnt usually do. And then nationally it will have a big impact because the three parties in Olaf Scholz s national Governing Coalition were really punished in this election and for many people it was a signal to berlin that they are not happy in this government. So it will have an effect nationally, and next year we have national elections in germany so thats why this is something all the parties are looking closely at what has been happening in regional elections with great worry because it means they are not going to have an easy ride over the next year in the run Up To the elections next year. The leader of thuringia has been fined a number of times for using Nazi Slogans at rallies. He has been defined by courts as a fascist, and in this region you have some of the most radical elements within the afd. The afd as a party is so extreme that marine Le Pens party in france will not work with them on a european level. So its a very radical party, particularly in eastern germany, and what they really stand for is an anti migrant stance but particularly an anti islam stands and they go beyond wanting to control the number of refugees and Asylum Seekers who come to germany, they want to close our borders and leave the eu, get rid of the euro. Some of the members of this party do say things that we can interpret as being anti islam and sometimes homophobic and xenophobic. Its a deeply problematic party, particularly in thuringia, and that has an impact for people living there, from ethnic minorities and jewish groups, all sorts of people worried about their safety because what the afd says in rallies have now been confirmed at the ballot box. So a lot of people were expressing realfears box. So a lot of people were expressing real fears about what that means in their daily lives. Thanks very much indeed. Staying in berlin, lets speak to markus ziener, a professor who teaches political theory among several other subjects he is also a non resident fellow of the german Marshall Fund of the us. In terms of the significance of this, how important are these results and why are we seeing them in these two states in particular, in these two states in particular, in Thuringia And Saxony . I in these two states in particular, in Thuringia And Saxony . In Thuringia And Saxony . I think theres a couple in Thuringia And Saxony . I think theres a couple of in Thuringia And Saxony . I think theres a couple of factors in Thuringia And Saxony . I think theres a couple of factors in in Thuringia And Saxony . I think. Theres a couple of factors in play, and in particular when we look into the afd which was mentioned before and also the bsw both are capturing a certain mood, trying to convey East German sentiment, East German nostalgia for even the gdr, East German Socialist Party of germany, so i think this was one part and secondly it was about migration. In particular the eastern part of germany. People believe we have too many migrants and we have to put a stop to that. I think this is two of the biggest issues. Just stop to that. I think this is two of the biggest issues. The biggest issues. Just tell me about those the biggest issues. Just tell me about those populations the biggest issues. Just tell me about those populations in the biggest issues. Just tell me | about those populations in those the biggest issues. Just tell me about those populations in those two states of germany. What is the Wealth And Education of that population . Is there a big Migrant Population . Is there a big Migrant Population there . Population . Is there a big Migrant Population there . When it comes to mi. Rants, population there . When it comes to migrants. There population there . When it comes to migrants, there are population there . When it comes to migrants, there are not population there . When it comes to migrants, there are not that population there . When it comes to migrants, there are not that many l migrants, there are not that many in the eastern parts of its kind of an irony that in the eastern part of germany we dont find that many migrants. People are voting more strongly against having migrants in germany and more migrants in germany. This is The One thing, and secondly when it comes to the wealth and how well off people are in the east, of course there is a structural disadvantage here at play in the east. People who used to live in the east. People who used to live in the east. People who used to live in the former gdr are not as well off in the western part and look at how much money is inherited from one generation to the next, 90 actually have everything that is inherited to the next generation that comes. Happens in the western part of germany, not the eastern part, so there is a structural disadvantage and people feel left behind. But this is only part of it. I think theres more things here at play. If you look at russia and the sympathy for russia, there is a nostalgia for the life that used to be and people are i think forgetting how life under Gdr Oppression really was. Just finally, what does this mean, do you think, for national elections coming up and the overall Sort Of political mood in germany now . fin political mood in germany now . On the political mood in germany now . et The One hand, one can say this is only a small part of people in germany. If we are talking about the two states where we have seen Elections Yesterday and The One coming up in three weeks, this only makes up for less than 10 of the whole population of germany, so probably we should not exaggerate. On the other hand, if we look at berlin, as it was mentioned earlier for the coalition its ruling in berlin, this was a heavy blow they dont. They were way below 20 and for all the three parties together. For Olaf Scholz looking at the elections next year, he will have had time to maintain as a candidate for the Social Democrats because he has no Leadership Qualities and he has no Leadership Qualities and he has not the charisma that would carry the sdp, the social democratic party, over the carry the sdp, the social democratic party, Overthe Finishing carry the sdp, the social democratic party, over the finishing line.
