Said about the deaths. Many of you are aware that following the notting hill carnival we shared information about two people with very serious injuries. I am very sad to tell you now that both have since died. First i will talk to you about mussie imnetu. He was 41 years old and he was visiting the uk from dubai. He was found unconscious with a head injury in queensway at 11:22pm on monday, 26th of august. Officers and paramedics provided emergency first aid and mussie was taken to hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he sadly died on friday afternoon. A 31—year—old man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and the matter is now being treated as a murder investigation. I will now talk to you about cher maximen. Cher was 32 years old and was stabbed shortly before 6pm on sunday, 25th of august. Officers and paramedics provided first aid and cher was transported to hospital in a critical condition. Despite the hard work of medical staff, cher sadly died this morning. Cher was at the carnival with her young child, who is safe and is being cared for. On tuesday morning, officers arrested a 20—year—old man, who has already been charged with attempted murder. This case is also now a murder investigation. The news of these two tragic deaths is devastating for both families. My thoughts are with them as they come to terms with their unimaginable loss. They will continue to be supported by specialist officers, and we ask that their privacy is respected at this time. We are still appealing for information. If you witnessed either incident, please contact 101 or crimestoppers anonymously. Detectives are particularly interested in speaking to customers from the dr power restaurant in queensway who tried to stop the attack on mussie imnetu. This happened at around this happened at around 11:20pm on monday. 11:20pm on monday. I urge them to contact us. I urge them to contact us. Thank you. Thank you. The organisers of notting hill the organisers of notting hill carnival put out a statement, carnival put out a statement, saying. . . Saying. . . Our correspondent catherine our correspondent catherine byaruhanga had this update from scotland yard where two byaruhanga had this update from scotland yard where two active investigations is that she got in the middle active investigations are under way. Are under way. Two active murder two active murder investigations, as you say, investigations, as you say, following the tragic deaths following the tragic deaths of cher maximen of cher maximen and mussie imnetu. And mussie imnetu. Cher maximen, her injuries on sunday at notting hill carnival, shocked so many people in the country, in particular because she had visited the carnival on the family day when people come out with their children to attend the festivities of the notting hill carnival. She was actually there with her three—year—old child. Now, what is believed he was taken to hospital and treated but he later succumbed to his injuries and died on friday afternoon. Two men have been charged separately following the injuries of both mussie imnetu and cher maximen. A 31—year—old man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and a 20—year—old man was charged with attempted murder. What we are hearing from the authorities is that following the deaths of both cher maximen and mussie imnetu that they will now turn those investigations into murder into murder investigations, and they will be reviewing those charges together with the crown prosecution service. The mayor of london, sadik khan, issued a statement this afternoon. What has he said? yes, expressing the shock that has come following the deaths of these two individuals who had attended the notting hill carnival. Just to give some context and perspective of the notting hill carnival, this is an incredible celebration of caribbean culture in london. This is an event where people go to taste the food, experience the music, the parades, the dancing of notting hill carnival, and it is meant to be an event that brings people together, not only here in the capital, but you have people attending from across europe, from across the world, to attend europe's biggest street festival. Unfortunately, we have seen violence at the notting hill carnival. At this past carnival there were eight stabbings, three on the sunday and five on the monday. Police say they carried out a huge operation to ensure the safety of the people who attended. Around 340 arrests were made for various charges and various charges there at the notting hill carnival, but again, this past carnival is raising those questions about the safety of the people who choose to attend it. Palestinian health workers have started vaccinating some babies in gaza against polio, a day before a mass immunisation programme is due to begin. Palestinian health workers carried out the vaccinations in nasser hospital in khan younis. Unicef says the vaccinations will take place for six and a half hours every day until wednesday. Israel and hamas have agreed to three localised pauses in fighting to enable the vaccination of more than 600,000 palestinian children. With more from jerusalem — here's our correspondent, jon donnison. There are 640,000 children to vaccinate and the polio vaccination comes in two rounds, so more than a million vaccinations are already in gaza. The first round of vaccinations will start, as you say, tomorrow. In three weeks those children will have to have another vaccination, so a lot of the logistics around this have actually been about keeping the vaccinations cool because obviously it is very hot in gaza at the moment and they have got to be refrigerated, and for the most part it is local doctors who will be administering it, but with so many children to be vaccinated, it is going to be challenging. Let's talk about the occupation in the west bank and specifically the city ofjenin. What is the latest on the city ofjenin? well, this intensified israeli military operation has now been going on for several days, and it has continued to date specifically injenin. My colleagues there say there have been loud explosions coming from the urban refugee camp in the centre ofjenin, as well as bursts of gunfire. Israeli helicopter gunships have been spotted overhead, and israel says it is pursuing its counterterrorism operations, its foreign minister has said there is, in effect, a war in the west bank, and it is a war that israel is determined to win. But it is having a huge impact on civilians living in palestinian cities in the north of the west bank, many of them have been shuttered up in their homes now for days. I was injenin this week and it was absolutely deserted on the streets. My colleagues injenin said this morning they have seen a number of women and children being brought out in a group from the refugee camp, but it is an ongoing situation. And there has also been an attack on an aid convoy in gaza. What is the update on that? well, this actually happened on thursday, and it was a convoy from a us aid group that was taking medical supplies to the emma hospital in rafah they say the convoy was hit by an air strike and that for people, palestinians who were escorting the convoy as security to protect it from looting, died in that air strike. The charity involved says that they were not actually their employees, but they have been recruited locally. Israel has said that they were militants travelling as part researchers believe a drug used to treat obesity and type—2 diabetes could also help slow the ageing process. Studies on the effectiveness of semaglutide — which is sold under the brand names ozempic, and wegovy — found that the drug could be used to treat a wide range of illnesses linked to heart failure, arthritis, alzheimer's and even cancer. Researchers say that by improving people's health this way, the drug could help slow ageing. But is it too good to be true? here's professor bryan williams, the chief medical officer at the british heart foundation. Well, i think what they were really getting at is if you look at many of the diseases and conditions that are associated with ageing, a common one is our heart disease, stroke, dementia, cancers etc, and when these drugs are being given to patients who are obese or have diabetes or both of those conditions, and they produce significant weight loss, the evidence now suggests that many of those conditions are prevented to a significant degree and we are excited at the british heart foundation that we see a significant reduction in heart attacks and strokes and hospitalisations for heart failure. And when we are talking about significant we are saying about a third of the cases that would otherwise have occurred are being prevented. This is due to this treatment. So that's what they mean by the ageing process itself. Going beyond that, there has been an argument at there has been an argument at the meeting, a discussion at the meeting, a discussion at the meeting, a discussion at the meeting, about whether all of the benefits associated with the weight loss generated by these treatments, is that the main cause of the benefits, or are there other effects of the treatments themselves by binding to the receptor the drug binds to, does it produce other benefits independent of weight loss? they come to that conclusion because when they look at patients who don't lose as much weight as other patients, many of those patients, many of those patients have still seen the same level of benefit particular in terms of reducing heart disease and stroke. So, why is this happening if it looks like even in some cases the weight is not coming down very much? i think there are a number of reasons for that. We know that when you are overweight and if you lose weight, you can particularly lose weight with these drugs, they modify your appetite and not only for food, but it seems like you may reduce your intake of alcohol, you may also, if you smoke, reduce your smoking habit. So that's a fascinating observation that has come out of many of the trials. They would have a major impact on reducing risk. There is also evidence being presented at the meeting that these injections that induce weight loss also produce significant reductions in blood pressure, and as a consequence of weight loss, we see reductions in cholesterol, reduce risk of getting diabetes, so patients become more mobile and more active. There are many facets, all of those things such as stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake, reducing weight, taking more active exercise, and they often will reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease. Brazil has begun implementing a block on elon musk*s social media platform x in a dispute about the spread of disinformation. The sabina shoal is the latest flashpoint in an ongoing territorial battle between beijing and manila over various zones and islands in the south china sea. Now it's time for a look at today's sport. Hello from the bbc sport centre. We start with the premier league and a 1—1 draw in north london between arsenal and brighton. The home team had declan rice sent off, and in the end were made to pay. Mikel arteta's side were 1—0 up at half time at the emirates stadium thanks to a goal from kai havertz but the referee's decision to show rice a second yellow card for delaying a free—kick put arsenal on the back foot early in the second half and joao pedro found an equaliser for brighton soon after. Frustration for the arsenal boss who felt the referee wasn't consistent with his decision making. I was amazed because in the first half when they said that, they didn't get any booking and he makes a call, by law in a noncritical error on the pitch after the ball hitting his heel and turning around, to make that decision. By law he can do it. Then be consistent and if thatis it. Then be consistent and if that is the case you have to send him off because it is a red card and then we pay ten against ten. Later manchester city continue the defence of their title with a trip to west ham in the late kick—off. West ham already had a really good squad and this transfer this summer brings new players, and especially up front physicality. Especially they have an incredible defence and it is a really strong team. Having hit a century in the first innings against sri lanka — joe root has done it again for england — another hundred for him, this time on day three of the second test at lords. He has broken alistair cook's record and with 3a — now has the most centuries by an england batter in test cricket. At the moment sri lanka are 241. Now at the us open tennis, iga swiatek and jannik sinner are among the players in action later. Sinner is the favourite to win the title with carlos alcaraz and now novak djokovic also out of the tournament. The four—time winner in new york beaten by alexei popyrin in four sets in their third round match. What a moment for the australian. Djokovic will end the year without winning a grand slam for the first time since 2017. I played some of the worst tennis i have ever played honestly, serving by far the worst ever. So, yes, if you play on a quick surface like this without, you know, without the serve, without ability to win three points there, a very low first service percentage, many double faults, you can't win. Next to the paralympics in paris, with more medals won on the track on saturday. She has never seen them before which is really exciting, and a friend who is from university, we both went to see them at knebworth in 1996 so it will be a stroll down memory lane for the two of us. It will be a stroll down memory lane, but it's also going to be a rather different experience. Take us back to the previous time you saw them. I have seen them quite a few times between 1994 and 1996, but my first ever gig was at a small venue in leicester, the princess charlotte. I interviewed noel gallagher before the gig, and i had to get out of the gig pretty quickly because it all went mad. It is a gig that noel cites as being his second most memorable gig of his entire career because he realised that they were going to be making it big that night, and it was an incredible night. Very small, £4 a ticket in those days as well. Yes, i know the princess charlotte from my time at bbc radio leicester. The wedding of a norweigan princess and american self styled shaman has taken place. Princess martha louise married durek verrett at a hotel in the town of geiranger on a fjord on norway's west coast. The couple have also been criticised in norway for selling the rights to their wedding to hello magazine and netflix, and marketing a *wedding gin'. Stay with us here on bbc news. Hello there. It's been a glorious sunny start for most of us to begin this weekend. However, it's not the same for everyone. We do have more cloud around southern and eastern areas, and through the weekend i think we'll start to see increasing chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms, particularly across england and wales. But it's been a glorious start today, like i mentioned. Here's a beautiful scene from conwy in north wales. Big contrast, though, to cloudier, leaden skies across east anglia and the south east. It's because we're drawing this cloud off the north sea on a fairly brisk easterly breeze across southern areas, whereas further north, we're into the sunny blue skies. So for the rest of the day it does look like it's going to stay rather cloudy across the south and southeast. Maybe a few showers starting to push up from the near continent later in the day. But a warm one to come further north with all the sunshine, low 20s for glasgow. Low 20s as well for parts of wales, northwest england. Now, through this evening and overnight the cloud starts to drift northwards, start to import some humid air from southern areas and that will increase the chance of some heavy showers or thunderstorm — hit and miss showers, not everyone will get them. But you can see we're importing this warm and humid air from the near continent. So quite a muggy night to come for england and wales to start. Sunday could be no lower than 16 or 17 degrees in the southeast. So we start off with a bit more cloud across england and wales for sunday. Best of the sunshine towards the north west. But even here the cloud tends to build. There's a chance of seeing some there's a chance of seeing some heavy showers and thunderstorms becoming more heavy showers and thunderstorms widespread across parts of england and wales. Of england and wales. Hit and miss showers, hit and miss showers, not everyone will get one not everyone will get one and there's a question mark and there's a question mark to the extent of these to the extent of these showers could be a bit showers could be a bit further north, could be further north, could be a bit further westwards. A bit further westwards. A warm and humid day a warm and humid day to come across central to come across central and southern and eastern areas, and southern and eastern areas, a little bit fresher a little bit fresher further north. Further north. For monday, we have a weak for monday, we have a weak area of low pressure area of low pressure across the country. Across the country. A couple of weather fronts a couple of weather fronts that will enhance shower that will enhance shower and thunderstorm activity, and thunderstorm activity, could see some showers and could see some showers and storms across eastern areas. Storms across eastern areas. Another one another one in towards the west. In towards the west. Again, a bit of a question again, a bit of a question mark, some uncertainty mark, some uncertainty to the details of monday. To the details of monday. Have to stay tuned, have to stay tuned, but could see some sunny spells but could see some sunny spells across the southeast corner across the southeast corner and again across the far east, and again across the far east, we could be into the high 20s. We could be into the high 20s. So again, quite warm here, so again, quite warm here, but generally high teens, but generally high teens, low 20s elsewhere with more low 20s elsewhere with more cloud and showers around. Cloud and showers around. I think as we run i think as we run through the week, though, through the week, though, conditions begin to improve. Conditions begin to improve. We lose the shower and we lose the shower and thunderstorms early on, thunderstorms early on, and then high pressure might and then high pressure might build back in for the end build back in for the end of the week to settle things of the week to settle things down with increasing down with increasing amounts of sunshine. Amounts of sunshine. But stay tuned. But stay tuned. And thousands of fans face lengthy waits with official websites quickly overloaded. One provider, ticketmaster, insists the queue is moving.
