The eastern areas of janine and its refugee camp have both been sealed off for the past three days and there are fresh reports of casualties including an 82—year—old man who paramedics said was shot nine times. This is still a very different situation but almost a year of the gaza war has changed attitudes and tactics on both sides. It has changed the sense of threat israel feels from this conflict here. Many people are saying it is changing israel's response. Negotiating the damaged streets, a funeral procession for a 69—year—old with a disability, shot dead by a sniper when he opened his window. Alongside it, gunfire from the local leader of the armed groups here. He was also killed in this operation. A show of force from the armed fighters less than a day after israel's army withdrew. An israeli air strike on an aid convoy carrying food and fuel to a gaza hospital killed four palestinians on thursday, that's according to a us—based aid group anera. Israel claimed they were armed assailants, which the group denied. Let's get more on this with our correspondent injerusalem, jon donnison. What can you tell us about the aid convoy that was attacked in gaza?3. This happened on thursday and it was a convoy from this american aid organisation that was travelling towards the hospital in rafa which is right in the south of gaza. What they say happened was that the lead vehicle in that convoy carrying medical supplies was hit by an israeli air strike. The group is saying that the four people travelling with that convoy who were killed were not there employees but had been brought in from the local community to protect against looters as they headed down to rafa. Israel, though, is saying that they were palestinian militants who were palestinian militants who were exploiting the fact that this convoy was heading south. We will be speaking to an aid worker in gaza shortly but we want to find out what the situation is there in terms of the humanitarian side of things? it the humanitarian side of thins? , , things? it is absolutely grim on the human _ things? it is absolutely grim on the human terry things? it is absolutely grim on the human terry in things? it is absolutely grim on the human terry in front| things? it is absolutely grim on the human terry in front and the united nations and aid agencies have been saying this for the best part of a year. It is desperate in terms of first of all the heat that people are living in an gaza, many of them are living intense with shortages of water, fuel, food, medical supplies. We have had a rare bit of positive news coming out of gaza in the last few days on the humanitarian front and that is that we have this polio vaccination programme that is going to start tomorrow. That came after the first confirmed case of polio in a ten—month—old baby in 25 years. That poor child has been left partially paralysed and the un has been pushing very hard to get this aid vaccination programme started. To allow that to happen, there will be these areas of specific pauses in fighting. That is not a ceasefire, it is not the long—awaited ceasefire that people have been pushing for four months, but it is these temporary poses to allow vaccinations to take place in specific areas. The un saying they want to vaccinate 640,000 young children. Ijust want they want to vaccinate 640,000 young children. I just want to touch on something from lucy's report there which was filed late last night, so those were events yesterday, but i have just heard from lucy who is still in a janine and she says there is a lot of military activity there in the north of the west bank. She says there are apache helicopters from the israeli military flying over the area at the moment and it has been more active there today than the last 24 hours. As the situation in gaza continues to worsen, israel has agreed to a series of humanitarian pauses to allow for the vaccination of children against polio. The idf has agreed to implement the pauses starting on the first of september, in coordination with the world health organization. But israel says the move doesn't amount to a ceasefire. Hamas has also announced its cooperation with international organisations for the vaccination effort. The director general of the world health organization expressed his support for the vaccine effort. I welcome the commitment to humanitarian pauses in specific areas to allow vaccination campaign to be carried out. Due to insecurity, damaged roads and infrastructure, and population movement and displacement, three days in each area is unlikely to be enough to achieve adequate coverage. We urge all parties to ensure their protection and that of health facilities and children. A humanitarian pause i welcome, but ultimately, the only solution to safeguard the health of the children of gaza is a cease fire. The best medicine is peace. Next to south america and x, formerly known as twitter, has been banned in brazil. That ruling came after the platform missed a deadline to name a new legal representative there. A supreme courtjudge ordered the immediate and complete suspension of the social media platform until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines. X removed its legal representative from brazil, claiming thejudge had threatened her with arrest. Elon musk says free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo—judge in brazil, is destroying it for political purposes. Technology columnist for the washington post, taylor lorenz explains how this ruling came about. This has been a month—long battle and it basically stems from elon musk refusing to take down content related to brazil's attempted insurrection backin brazil's attempted insurrection back in 2022 and then he was ordered to have a lawyer. You have two, under brazilian law, have two, under brazilian law, have a legal rep resented in the country. He was given 24—hour is to appoint legal representative with a platform would be banned. He refused to do that so he has had this showdown. He could have prevented this ban and he chose not to. This is an incredibly significant moment for x. Brazil is one of the top user, one of the top countries, 21. 5 million users and brazil also plays a crucial part of pop culture. We saw a lot of big celebrity accounts are located in brazil, journalists, big names that people follow for news and information. So cutting this off really with very short notice is going to have a significant effect. I have a significant effect. I have said that people using vpn to essentially try to circumvent this ban will be fine. This is a scary precedent she said but they will want to ensure that it is cut off. Users i spoke to today that run big accounts are saying they are trying to push people onto other platforms. Many of them are trying to exchange contact information. A bunch of these are monetised so you have people relying on the monetisation that they are generating from these bigger twitter accounts to pay their rent, to put food on the table, so for that to go away overnight because elon musk just decided not to comply with this stuff, is quite major. Meanwhile, he sacked the head of the ukrainian air force days after an f—16 fighter jet crashed, killing its pilot. The jet was recently sent by nato allies. Here in the uk, detectives are continuing to appeal for information after a 13—year—old boy was fatally stabbed in his own home. The boy, who has not yet been named by police, died in oldbury, near west bromwich, on thursday. Our reporter leigh milner has the latest details. It's here where a 13—year—old boy was stabbed to death in his own home. Detectives continue making door—to—door inquiries with neighbours in an effort to find out more about what happened. I'm here to let the family and the wider community know that we will work with you and support you as we seek to find who is responsible for the death of this young boy. Last year, the west midlands had the highest rate of knife offences in england and wales with many victims in their teens. Police launched something called project guardian to try to combat the problem five years ago, but since then, the numbers have kept going up. Young people are in fear. Because they hear stories like this and think that they need to equip themselves with a knife. So you know, a lot of young people i mentor tell me — i don't want to die. Or if in a situation that i've got a knife, what do i do? outside the house, people come to lay flowers in tears. But there's fear, too. There's a real danger around this area. Thank you both. Stay with us on bbc news. This weekend will take us out of august and into september. Technically speaking, the start of the media logical autumn but in spite of that, there is some warmth and humour to tea on the way. Warm and humid conditions drove a lot of showers and thunderstorms during continental europe on friday. That air wafting its way northwards over the weekend and while there will be some spells of sunshine, we also have the chance of some pretty intense thunderstorms although there is still a lot of uncertainty about how many of those there will be and where they might crop up. Saturday will be largely dry day. Quite a lot of sunshine around. More cloud finishing into southern parts of england and the chance of monetary showers and the odd thunderstorm across the channel islands and south—east england later in the day. A breeze will keep things cool close to these sea coasts. 17 for aberdeen and newcastle but more generally, 19 to 23 degrees, so quite a warm day. Warm and humid overnight into sunday, especially across the south, and we will see further well scattered showers and thunderstorms are pushing northwards especially across eastern counties of england. 16 degrees, the overnight low in london. 9 degrees for glasgow. Sunday, that warm air continues to push northwards. With it, quite a lot of cloud on the chance for some of the showers and thunderstorms also if they do appear, they could bring a lot of rain and may be some hill thrown in especially across eastern england but many spots will avoid the showers and stay dry full stop 19 to maybe 27 or 20 degrees in the south—east. Sunday we will see further showers and thunderstorms especially across eastern england but low pressure swelling in from the west and that means for monday, there will be a lot of cloud, some outbreaks of rain and some of that rain will be heavy, possibly thundery. Quite misty and murky around some coasts and murky around some coasts and towards the west but we will see some sunshine as well. Still getting up to 25 degrees across parts of east anglia but out towards the west, things will be turning colour and pressure. That set the theme, really, through the middle part of the week. Cooler conditions, right at times. It might warm up right at times. It might warm up again for some of us by the end of the week. This is bbc news. Hundreds of thousands of people are right now queueing online for tickets for next year's reunion tour of the british rock band oasis. To germany now and voters in the east of the country will go to the polls on sunday with the *far—right alternative for germany* party set to come out on top. The md has built a strong base in the states of saxony and thuringia and anger with chancellor olaf scholz*s government is surging, especially after a knife attack last weekend in which three people were killed. The main suspect is a syrian asylum—seeker who had been facing deportation. The anti—immigration party is now germany's fifth largest party. A win this weekend would be its first—ever state victory. A warning, jessica parker's report contains some flashing images. Booing. Boos and shouts aimed at chancellor olaf scholz, among them traitor and warmonger. Chancellor scholz has not been very visible during this campaign in the east. He's not exactly seen as an electoral asset, and the reception for him here, it's mixed. An argument in the crowd. The man on the left supports the far—right alternative for deutschland. The man on the right does not. Does germany feel divided to you at the moment? yeah. Yes, they say. That's the one thing they can agree on. Music. Some upbeat music, but don't be fooled. There's tension in germany, especially around immigration. That's feeding the afd*s popularity, a party in thuringia that's classed by domestic intelligence as right—wing extremist. Some people in germany, they're not just critical of the md, they say they're actually scared of the md. Translation: noone wants to be called rightwing extremist or nazis. We make conservative. Politics, but it's far away from right—wing extremism. That's what people are being told every day, i and they fall for it. Life looks good here, but something's bubbling in the former communist east. What's driving this discontent? well, there's angst on issues ranging from immigration to germany sending weapons to ukraine, a deep frustration with the parties that have governed this country since reunification, and a dissatisfaction amongst people in east germany about what reunification has or hasn't delivered. You can constantly see where the east begins and where the west begins. Better infrastructure, better industry, its more concentration on the west, like. . . . And we are getting, like, forgotten. Constantin, who says he'll support the md, hops on his east german—made simpson 550 moped. Over decades, pride in the east was dented. Jas athwal, who represents ilford south, in east london, has apologised about the poor condition of some of the homes. He has promised repairs will be carried out swiftly. The government is planning to pass legislation to better protect private tenants. Here's our politics investigations correspondentjoe pike. When i visited seven of jas athwal*s flats above a shop, one resident told me that the ants were everywhere. They had seen ants which they pointed to climbing up the wall, on the child's body and their child's clothes. Other residents spoke about the black mould on their bathroom ceilings that they needed to clean regularly, otherwise it would come back. In the communal areas lights were not working, the fire alarm seemed to be broken and the residents did not seem to want to speak out. They seemed scared and worried and one tenant told me that they had been threatened with eviction if they complained about the state of their property. Jas athwal, the mp and landlord, said he is profoundly sorry by what we found. He was shocked by the bbc*s revelations. But it does contrast with his initial statement in which he said he was a good landlord and claimed his properties had been repaired. Now he is saying that maintenance will be done swiftly. He added his rates are below market rates. The properties are managed by an agency and he had not been aware of these problems. Remarkably, he has also admitted that properties do not have the licenses they should have under a local authority scheme and a scheme that he introduced himself in december as the leader of the local council. He previously incorrectly told us that he was fully compliant with that property licensing regime. More than 650 border force staff are expected to go on strike at london's heathrow airport today. The workers, who are members of the public and commercial services union, will walk out for four days inflexible rosters. After that, staff will continue with an overtime ban into late september. A spokesperson from the home office said, we will have robust plans in place to minimise disruption where possible, but we urge passengers to check the latest advice from operators before they travel. A head teachers' union is warning that many schools in england, found to have unsafe raac concrete, will suffer financially for years. The association of school and college leaders says some secondary schools are seeing a fewer applications, which will mean less funding. A doctor charged in connection with the death of the actor matthew perry has appeared in court in los angeles after agreeing to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. Mark chavez was granted bail, but has been barred from practising medicine. His lawyer said he was incredibly remorseful. Matthew perry died from a ketamine overdose last october. Another doctor and the alleged supplier of the drug are due to go on trial in the autumn. Speaking outside the court after the hearing, his defence lawyer, matthew binninger, said mr chavez was sorry for what he had done. What we can tell you is that he's incredibly remorseful for what happened, notjust because it happened to matthew perry, but because it happened to a patient. He is trying to do everything in his power to right the wrong that happened here. He didn't accept responsibility today, but only because it wasn't on calendar. We're going to be setting a change of plea in the next few weeks and so that will happen here shortly, once i contact the court. My client is accepting responsibility. He is doing everything in his power to cooperate to help in this situation, and he is incredibly remorseful. The bride is king harald's eldest child, martha louise. She is fourth in line to the the throne — but stepped down from royal duties two years ago. She claims to be a clairvoyant who can speak with angels. Durek verret is from california and calls himself a sixth—generation shaman. The pair will tie the knot at a hotel in a picturesque village on the shores of fjord on norway's west coast. A service which helps those with disabilities and limited mobility to get out—and—about for some fresh air has been described by those that use it as a lifeline. Volunteers at cycling without age in portsmouth use trikes to help people enjoy the outdoors. Our reporter michele cross has more. Music plays. It can be a very long day when you're indoors on your own with nobody to talk to. It can be soul destroying. For nicholas, this service is a lifeline. Music plays. I'm totally blind and about six years ago i had have emergency brain surgery, which means i have very little ability in walking, i have to use a frame or a wheelchair. So unless somebody pushes the wheelchair, i'm stuck indoors. Music plays. Cycling without age set up in portsmouth and hayling island in 2019, with volunteers acting as so—called pilots, carrying passengers like nicholas around the neighbourhood. Today, volunteers debbie and her husband, bob, at the helm, taking us on a trip around canoe lake. And it's free trike rides for anybody in the city who is socially isolated or perhaps had to give up cycling and would love to get back out in the fresh air. And theyjust get in touch with the trust and say which day they would prefer and one of us nine pilots will come and take them out. And the volunteers even magic up a few surprises. I have been a pompey fan all my life. I hadn't been for maybe ten years because of the disabilities. I went to fratton park with the new wheelchair accessible area to witness pompey and oxford last season. Just to be there with the atmosphere again was wonderful. Pessie is a regular user of the trikes to help her visit the resting place of her husband and her son. My son passed away 12 years ago. I'm, just like that, disabled, i don't know why. Some sort of shock, i think, can't hardly walk. Ianery depressing mood most of the time, and if i can't go to the cemetery i feel very upset. What does it mean for you to be able to come here? this gives me peace of mind and i know i can go and somebody takes me there. You know, if i don't go for weeks on end i get very depressed and upset. So, it's nice to go with somebody and i'm so grateful to the bikers. Keeping the wheels turning, though, can be a challenge. There was a desperate situation injune where we didn't think we had enough money to keep the trikes going. The trikes have to be maintained on a regular basis and, of course, even things like replacement parts, the battery, for example, £700 for a battery. So all these little things, they all add up. Thanks to local fundraising, they've secured the service for another three years. It means we can get a co—ordinator. Because we're the pilots, we need somebody in the office doin the back end stuff talking to the passengers, arranging things, it is so important. If that team member wasn't there we were able to do the service. I think we're looking to get some more pilots now so we can train more people so that we can get the trikes out more often, which will be great. When you go home at the end of a day how do you feel? happy. I got to see people with happy smiles on theirfaces, that makes it for me. Researchers have found that marmoset monkeys use unique calls to address one another — similar to the way humans call each other by name. They're the first non—human primates known to do so. Scientists think that using names likely helps the tiny primates keep their families close and maintain social cohesion. Ticketmaster has said its website has not crashed, the key is moving along. This is what millions of fans will be looking at. They say the site has not crashed. Hello. This weekend will take us out of august and into september — technically speaking, the start of the meteorological autumn. But in spite of that, there is some warmth and some humidity on the way. Warm and humid conditions drove a lot of the showers and thunderstorms across the western side of continental europe during friday. That warm and humid air wafting its way northwards over the weekend. And while there will be some spells of sunshine, we also have the chance of some pretty intense thunderstorms, although there is still a lot of uncertainty about exactly how many of those there will be and where they might crop up. And actually, saturday will be a largely dry day. Quite a lot of sunshine around, more cloud spilling into southern parts of england, perhaps south wales, and the chance of one or two showers and perhaps the odd thunderstorm across the channel islands and perhaps south—east england later in the day. A breeze will keep things cool close to these north sea coasts — 17 for aberdeen and newcastle. More generally, though, 19 to 22 or 23 degrees, so quite a warm day. Quite warm and humid overnight, through saturday night into sunday, especially across the south, and we will see further, very well—scattered showers and thunderstorms pushing northwards, i think especially across some eastern counties of england. 16 degrees the overnight low in london, a cooler nine degrees there for glasgow. As we go through sunday, well, that warm, humid air continues to push northwards. With it, quite a lot of cloud and the chance for one or two of those showers and thunderstorms. If they do crop up, they could bring a lot of rain, perhaps some squally winds, maybe some hail thrown in, especially across eastern england, but many spots will avoid the showers and stay dry. 19 to maybe 27 or 28 degrees down towards the south—east. Now, through sunday night, we will see further showers and thunderstorms, perhaps most especially across eastern england. But low pressure's swirling in from the west, and that means from monday, there will be a lot of cloud, there will be some outbreaks of rain. Some of that rain will be heavy, possibly thundery. It could really be quite misty and murky around some coasts out towards the west, but we will see some spells of sunshine as well. Still getting up to around 25 degrees across parts of east anglia, but out towards the west, things will be turning cooler and fresher. And that sets the theme, really, through the middle part of the week — some cooler conditions, some rain at times. It might warm up again, though, for some of us by the end of the week. Live from london. This is bbc news. A senior hamas commander and two otherfighters are killed by israeli forces in the occupied west bank. We start in the middle east — israel says it's killed a hamas commander injenin in the west bank, on the third day of its military operation there, an operation that's drawn international criticism, including from the uk. Here, the foreign office says it's deeply concerned about israel's methods and reports of civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. Lucy williamson reports from inside the west bank, and a warning that her report contains distressing images from the start. On a road outsidejenin this morning, israeli forces came face—to—face with the man they believe led hamas here. Inside the white car, a man shot dead by the army.
