The israelis would argue that its an escalation, too, because they say that iran has been funding some of the armed groups there, supplying them with weapons, opening up what the israeli Foreign Minister called an Eastern Front against israel to create a base for attacks on israeli civilians. Ithink, though, that what were actually seeing is just the latest iteration of the steady descent into more bloodshed that has been occurring since the October 7th attacks by hamas into israel almost a year ago now. And also the fact that this is, yeah, people, Otherforces May well get involved. I have no idea if iran is funnelling weapons towards the West Bank. Perhaps it is. But the point is, the fundamental issue is the conflict, the conflict between israelis and palestinians about who controls the land. Palestinians want the West Bank as part of a future state, an independent state. The israeli government has said that under no circumstances can the palestinians have independence and therefore freedom, self determination, and that the entire land the israeli government says between the riverjordan and the sea is land that belongs to the jews. Now, we have been reporting in the last number of weeks and months on violence from some israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, and weve heard from the us today, it has announced new sanctions related to that violence. We are seeing that Benjamin Netanyahu is saying in the last short while, he views with the utmost severity these new us sanctions on settlers. Do you think its likely that if there is an evacuation of palestinians from the West Bank, that settlers will use that opportunity to expand their settlements . Quite possibly. The israeli Foreign Minister has been suggesting that entire populations should be moved out of the areas where the army is, the Israeli Army is operating, in the way that they keep doing it in gaza to enable them to, the israelis would argue, save lives, civilian lives, but to give the army a free hand in those areas. Now, there are these groups of large numbers of militant armed jewish settlers who operate with the support of significant figures in the government, including the Prime Minister. You hear it from what he said about the american sanctions. He has appointed as effectively the governor of the West Bank one of the effectively settler leaders, who is an ultra nationalist, hard jewish, nationalist politician. And so, yeah, the americans are saying Extremist Settler Violence in the West Bank causes intense human suffering, harms israels security, and undermines the prospects for peace and stability. So they have sanctioned one organisation which basically expelled 250 palestinians from their homes and took the land, and one individual who is a prominent sort of security leader, you might say, in one of the more militant settlements in the West Bank. But, you know, its not very much its pretty symbolic. And will it change the way that settlers operate in the occupied territories . I highly doubt it. But it could be briefly and finally, Jeremy Another flashpoint in a situation of many flashpoints . I think this is a major escalation thats going on at the moment, and it means that the West Bank, where there has been a steady descent into more bloodshed, has boiled right up now, and well see what happens.
