Lucy williamson, bbc news, jenin. Yossi mekelberg, associate fellow with the middle East And North Africa Programme at chatham house, gave us his analysis. The fact that iran is involved with part of the Axis Of Resistance in supporting militant groups is not a secret. But the Big Question is how much they are actually involved in the West Bank. How much outreach they can they can have in the West Bank, whether they support ideologically, support financially, support with weapons. But in many ways, this is the easiest claim for israel to put forward in order to carry out such an operation. The Big Question is why israel is in this position. Its the occupation of more than 57 years. Its the lack of political solution. Bear in mind that places like Tulkarem And Jenin are, according to the Oslo Agreement, part of area a, which is supposed to be under complete palestinian control. But there is no respect for palestinian control of any part of the West Bank any more. And we know if there was any area that had been successful in the Oslo Agreement is the Security Cooperation between the pa and israel. And right now israel is taking unilateral steps to deal with this militancy. But it doesnt deal with the root causes of militancy in the West Bank, which is the lack of a political solution. So you think this action might destabilise that cooperation . I think potentially the fact that the president of the of the pa decided to cut short an important visit to riyadh shows the gravity of the situation. And i think israel by its unilateral decision, undermines not only the cooperation but also the pa itself. Maybe its part of a grand plan to bring the pa down, but whats next . We know that there are elements within the israeli government that would like to bring down the pa and to annexe next the West Bank, as we could see from what happens in gaza. This makes the situation only worse. You may have heard my previous guest talking about the potential for evacuations, and whether that would leave space for more areas to be cleared for settlers. Do you think that that might be a potential outcome, a likely outcome of this action . I think the very mentioning of of evacuation and compare it to gaza, which is the terrifying idea that going to replicate even to a certain degree, what happens in gaza, where people have been evacuated four or five and six times from place to place and promising them security that they never enjoyed for the last nearly 11 months. The idea to replicate it in the West Bank, and then potentially giving the opportunity to the settler to push more settlers, sorry, more palestinians from their land followed by probably more outposts. This is quite a scary thought, which i think the international community should address. Discussing whether if there are evacuations of palestinian occupied West Bank that more territory might be taken over by israeli settlers. The us has announced a new raft of sanctions targeting israeli Settler Violence in the occupied West Bank. Lets speak to our State Department Corrrespondent tom bateman. These in particular target nongovernmental organisation and an individual. In terms of the organisation this is a group that supplies volunteers to the so called hurting operations in the West Bank. These are really where settlers use grazing animals to take palestinian land and then once they are on the land to intimidate and violently attacked palestinians for the and try to drive them from their homes. That group sanctioned by the us now. Any individual i mentioned was described as a Security Coordinator in a Settlement Thatis Coordinator in a settlement that is a very extremist settlement from which many attacks on palestinians have emanated. That individual also sanctioned. I think the significance of these is that it is a sort of ramping up of the types of organisations and people us is now sanctioning. In both cases this group has received funding from the israeli government put up the individual is effectively in a public employee because paid by the settlement regional councils, which comes from Public Funds in israel. And so this is the us government acknowledging the link between the israeli state and Settler Violence in this case. Having said that, we still havent seen a situation where members of the israeli parliament or even ministers have have deep connections with some of those groups, those seem to be off limits so far for us sanctions. Briefly, presumably the us will be keeping a close watch on the situation in the occupied West Bank to see if there are evacuations of palestinians, to see if some settlers might use that to take over more territory. So on thursday morning, then, well start off with a lot of sunshine and just a few scattered showers across northern england, northern ireland. Showers more frequent into scotland, moving from west to east through the day. Top temperatures between 14 19 degrees here, but we should see temperatures at 23 celsius, so a little bit more pleasant perhaps across southeast england. Now, as we move through thursday evening, those showers will tend to fade away, perhaps just clinging to the far north of Scotland Clearing skies, thats going to allow those temperatures to fall away into single figures.
