invasion of ukraine. the leader of reform uk — who'll be familiar around the world for formerly leading the pro—brexit uk independence party — claimed that russia's invasion of ukraine was provoked by europe and nato. with more, here's our political correspondent harry farley. vladimir putin this morning at a ceremony to mark the nazi invasion of russia in world war ii. his invasion of ukraine has largely united british politics. this is more like a police interview. but last night, the man who says he wants to be leader of the opposition, said it was a consequence of eu and nato expansion. we've provoked this war. you know, of course it's his fault. he's used... but we provoked the invasion of ukraine? yes, and very interestingly, once again, ten years ago when i predicted it... by the way, i'm the only person in british politics that predicted what would happen. and of course, everyone says i was a pariah for daring to suggest it. rishi sunak has been reluctant to criticise nigel responsibility, sole responsibility, for the russian invasion of ukraine. i think anybody who wants to stand to be a representative in our parliament should be really clear that whether it's russian aggression on the battlefield or online, we stand against that aggression. the liberal democrat leader, sir ed davey, campaigning on a chicken farm this morning said that only president putin was responsible for the death of civilians in ukraine. mr farage's political opponents are hoping his chances of winning here in clacton are dented by his views on the kremlin. a leading think tank has claimed there is a four billion pound hole in the plans for social care put forward by labour, the conservatives and the liberal democrats. the institute for fiscal studies told the bbc that money set that it got delayed and thatis happened was that it got delayed and that is what led to this apparent shortfall in funding. i've been speaking to someone from the institute for fiscal studies, they been heard from since monday morning. no trace of him has been found, despite the use of drones, dogs and a helicopter. in his home town in lancashire, people have been tying blue ribbons, hoping for his safe return.0ur correspondent fiona trott has this report. searches are resuming this morning in that mountainous area behind me. it's where the village of masca is. that is the area where jay slater was last seen. but that itself has raised so many questions about his disappearance. what was he doing there? who were those two men that he met at an after party in the early hours of monday that he got into a car with and then drove a0 minutes to that village in those mountains behind me there. this is adding to the anguish for friends and family who are trying to piece together these events. and also, there have been questions about the police investigation, too. earlier this week, we were speaking to jay's friend lucy, who was saying she wanted the police in britain to assist the guardia civil with their investigation. we know that that offer of assistance came yesterday from lancashire police, but the police here turned around and said we believe we have the resources we need for this investigation. so, let'sjust recap on what those resources are. the police have told us they've been working with a team of 16 firefighters, local police, mountain rescuers, using sniffer dogs, drones, a helicopter which you saw in that report there dipping down into the ravine in that area where he was last seen. so, let's also go over his last known movements to try and understand what happened at around... in the early hours of that monday morning, he met those two men, went to that village in the car. at about 7:30 he posted a photograph on his snapchat account showing him at a property. now, we've spoken to a neighbour who said that she saw him at a bus stop. he was asking her about when the next bus would be. she said he'd have to wait for 2 hours. and at that point he walked away and she said she saw him walking further into the mountains. now, we understand he then called his friend lucy, and he said that he was going to have to start walking back to his accommodation. but that was a ten hour walk and lucy was telling us she was really worried about him. he had just shorts, a t—shirt, no water, sunscreen. it's hot here at the moment — hot during the day, cold at night. and when they had that conversation, suddenly his phone cut out. so a lot of concerns about the circumstances there, what he was doing there in the first place. he was meant to be home in lancashire this weekend, he was due to be flying back yesterday. instead, his mother and father are here on the island, anxiously waiting for news, being supported by people back home. as you saw, over £25,000 has been raised for the family too, which will give them some comfort and support, i suppose. but of course, also they're facing this harsh reality of of every day waking up here wondering where 19—year—old jay slater is. a swiss court has handed jail sentences to four members of the billionaire hinduja family, for exploiting servants from their native india to work in their villa in geneva. prakash hinduja, his wife kamal, their son, ajay, and his wife namrata, received sentences ranging from four, to four and a half years. they were acquitted on the more serious charge of people trafficking. the hindujas were accused of confiscating the servants' passports, and of paying them as little as eight dollars a day , far less than swiss wages. none of the four were in court to hear the verdict, and they intend to launch an appeal. following the verdict, the prosecution requested an immediate detention order for the younger hinduja couple, but this was denied by the judge. let's get some of the day's other news now. the leader of the independence movement in the french pacific territory of new caledonia has been formally charged following deadly protests in may. it's not clear exactly what christian tein has been charged with. prosecutors have said they're investigating complicity in homicide, arson and membership of a violent group. three people have been killed and 10 wounded in a shooting outside a grocery store in the us state of arkansas. two law enforcement officers were among those injured, but their conditions are not life—threatening. a suspect was injured and has been taken into custody. the authorities in paris have postponed a rehearsal for the olympics opening ceremony because of the high levels of the river seine. the rehearsal involving a fleet of boats was due to take place on monday, with the ceremony itself due in five weeks' time. now it's time for a look at today's sport. hello from the bbc sport centre. we start with euro 2024, where georgia and czechia are into the second half of their game in hamburg. just before half—time, georges mikautadze cooly slotting home a penalty after the referee spotted a czechia handball in the box, but they hit back in the second half, patrik schick scrambling home after a set piece. the result leaves both teams with a point a piece in group f after both lost their opening games two more games at euro 2024 later, belgium looking to recover from their shock defeat to slovakia on the opening matchday when they take on romania in cologne while in the next hour, portugalface turkey in dortmund — a win for either side likely sending them to the knockout rounds. the attention as always focused on cristiano ronaldo, with manager roberto martinez once again having to answer questions on his captain's fitness and importance to the side. for us, cristiano brings experience, bring the goal—scoring opportunities, the movement in the box, the opportunity to open space and a dose would analyse in terms of the physical, all you need to look at is what he's donein the last 12 months because this is the national team of portugal, because he deserves to be, he scored 51 goals in 51 games. he scored 51 goals in 50 games. england are preparing for their final group c match against slovenia on tuesday amid growing criticism of their last out performance when they drew 1—1 with denmark. injuries and lack of form have been a talking point and that continues to be the case for one player as our football reporter alex howell let us know earlier 25 of the england squad were out here on the pitch here as they prepared for that game, but crucially, luke shaw is still inside training on his own, doing an individual programme which means he is probably in massive doubt of that game for england on tuesday. gareth southgate has talked about the physical limitations of some of his players and harry kane spoke about some of his confusion when they were playing during the match. so, we may have seen some of the players, they may have come in to replace people like trent alexander, they haven't worked, but people are working hard just in front of me on the training pitch ahead of their game against slovenia on tuesday. india will look to take a big step towards the t20 world cup semi—finals with victory over bangladesh in their super eights
