Now on bbc news, sportsday. Hello and welcome to sportsday. All square at Anfield Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola embrace a point, but that keeps arsenal top of the table celtic are the second team through to the scottish cup semis, but they left it late against livingston. And more woe for wales, they remain bottom of the six nations table, beaten in cardiff by the french by a record score. Wed been looking forward to this game for weeks, liverpool and Manchester City at anfield with the table set for one of them to move to the top with a win. Neither could manage that, a pulsating 1 1 draw, which keeps arsenal looking down at them, Goal Difference and a single point separating the three of them. Hugh ferris reports. Around anfield, youre never too far from being reminded of past greatness, but liverpool and Manchester Citys rivalry is one that defines the present. The Premier League has not been won by anyone else for a while, and in their last English League meeting, jurgen klopp and Pep Guardiola exchanged pleasantries, then once more resumed hostilities. And if theres effective way of blocking out all of that anfield and the champions lead at anfield the margins in these games are tight. The smallest of spaces was all thatjohn stones needed. The gaps were there at the other end, too, but the necessary finishing was lacking. Sometimes it is all about concentration and timing. Ederson came penalty ederson was off. Not for the first time, the significance, the emotions, etched onto his face. The game was tight, decided on points of poise. Orforjeremy doku, mere inches one way or the other. It is a result that may not decide the title race. Splitting these two takes a great deal. Lets see how the managers summed up that draw. Wow, i said nothing will be decided after this game whatever result was the outcome, and today it proved to me for the first time 100 , yes, we are exactly where we should be. Honestly, i watch a lot of football, and i watch a lot of city, you can always learn something. I dont think i ever saw them struggling like they did today. We had a feeling that they were winning 6 0 or 7 0 every time the crowd made noise, we give away the penalty, the momentum was there, but when we made our changes, it was back with us. Yeah, it is happening. There was also a massively important win for tottenham today. It was all about the battle for a top four finish and they won 4 0 at aston villa. Villa are still fourth but spurs are only two points behind them now with a game in hand. Adam cottier reports. In the build up to this game, spurs boss Ange Postecoglou claimed qualifying for the Champions League would not be a willy wonka Golden Ticket to accelerate tottenhams progress. Aware, surely, though, that defeat at villa park would severely hamper his sides chances of finishing in the top four, his side upped the ante to take the lead after a tepid first half. James maddison is yet to play Champions League football in his career. His team might be poised to hit that particular bulls eye after a result that swung probability back in their favour. Brennanjohnson added a second before villas day continued to unravel Asjohn Mcginn was shown a straight red card for a rather late tackle on destiny udogie. And spurs make sure they would move two points behind fourth place villa as Son Heung Min swept home their third. Substitute timo werner added gloss with his second in as many games. Tottenhams destiny is back in their own hands. Feels like a hugely significant win for Tottenham Oveer their top four rivals. Here are the managers thoughts. Outstanding on all facets, yeah. The first half, we made them work really hard, | which i thought, you know, we were pretty confident would bear fruit in the second half, i and we maintained tempo, the intensity, and the quality of our football in the secondl half was outstanding. They are a very good team, particularly strong here at home, a big game, this was significant, so for us to perform like that, i yeah, credit to everyone. Had to accept that today we are facing tottenham, they are in the top four more than us, we were inconsistent facing opponents like today. We need more, we need more. And of course, we are still in fourth, but to lose today, we lost a big opportunity, that is hard to accept and we will have to react quick. Nottingham forest remain just three points above the Relegation Zone after a 1 0 defeat at brighton. Andrew omobamideles own goal was the difference between the two sides. It means forest are now in a real battle to survive. Luton are third from bottom and have a game in hand over forest. The two sides face each other at Kenilworth Road next saturday. A lot of issues that we have to improve. One of them is making real opportunities and trying to finish them. Tough game, but i think we deserved more. We were going against a good team with good possession, we were able to limit it, except for the goal not too many situations they did create, and create something that we should have won better. I am happy today because we showed the reaction, we showed to be good people, to have emotion, to have a sense of the responsibility, and we played well, i think especially in the first 35 minutes in the first half. Burnley were heading forjust their fourth win of the season, but former player danny ings salvaged a point for west ham with a 91st minute equalizer. Burnley had been 2 0 up through david fofana and a Konstantinos Mavropanos own goal but west ham hit back with goals from Lucas Paqueta and then ings. Burnley are off the bottom with the point but still the disappointment of that final goal conceded, it is at the forefront of your feelings, i think, in the end the team fought really, really hard, we created ourselves chances, we were in the game for 100 minutes plus, and, yeah, it is unfortunate but we will have to muster the same energy for the next game. We probably looked a bit hungover from the game on thursday night when we started the game, but we certainly came back into it strongly. Missed quite a lot of chances in the end. I think we have had a day where a lot of decisions have just not gone for us. In football, you need small things to go for you. We have won a couple of games late on recently, won at everton, sometimes it has to happen that way, but just today, today we just were not quite at it right from the start. That is how the bottom of the table looks after the weekends fixtures. The bottom three all drew, but you can see how important that game at luton is against Nottingham Forest. A win for luton next weekend would see them move out of the bottom three above forest on goals scored. And a reminder of the top of the table. Citys next game in the league is against arsenal at the end of the month. Liverpool are at home to brighton. You can see how spurs have kept themselves in the race for the top four, beating villa and they have a game in hand as well. The championship is getting really interesting at both ends of the table. Just five points separate 15th and 23rd place. Huddersfield missed their chance to move out of the Relegation Zone. They needed to beat West Bromwich albion and started well through delano burgzorgs first half goal. But west brom mounted a second half comeback. Mikeyjohnston s brace and this thunderbolt of a finish from okay yokuslu in the final 20 helped them to a 4 1 win. That consolidates fifth place and they are looking good for the play offs. In the only other Championship Game today, bristol city beat swansea city i 0. In the scottish cup, holders celtic were given a fright by livingston, but were able to fight back to reach their ninth semi final in ten years thanks to two late goals. Livingston twice came from behind to level in search of their first win at celtic park. But the home sides experience in knockout matches shone through. Daizen maeda marked his 100th appearance for the club with a hat trick, before Kyogo Furuhashi cemented the win with a fourth in injury time. 11 2 the final score. The Semifinal Draw will be made tomorrow evening on bbc scotland. And hibernian were up against rangers. It finished 2 0 to the visitors. Hibs finished the match with nine men. Aberdeen are also in the hat for the quarterfinals. Greenock morton and hearts play the fourth quarterfinal tomorrow evening. Greenock morton and hearts. Greenock morton and hearts. Weve had the last of the womens fa cup quarterfinals, chelsea are still on for a quadruple after edging past everton1 0. Tottenham scored a late equaliser to force extra time and then beat Manchester City on penalties. Catarina macario scored her second goal in as many chelsea games since returning from 20 months out with an acl injury. They wll be in tuesday s semi final draw with tottenham, leicester, and manchester united. You could tell we have had a lot of games in quick succession, third away game in a week, thought we were sluggish in everything we did, but outstanding to get the result. I think the difference for us at least was that little bit of class from cat macario. Everton were unlucky, they were good, we did just about enough to win today. Wales are still stuck to the bottom of the six nations table after their fourth defeat in this years championship. It was close at halftime, but the french ran away with it. But the french ran away with it. Winning 45 24, their biggest win in cardiff. Jim lumsden reports. Max boyce did his bit to try to lift the welsh spirit, but italys superb victory over scotland meant the wooden spoon had come into view. France themselves have been having a poor campaign, only managing to draw with the improving italians, and their defence was soon breached. Both coaches overhauled their sides, five changes for the hosts, eight for the french. With less than half an hour gone, a third try arrived, this time for the hosts. Tomos williams and wales are under the posts again early in the second half, gaps were evident in the french defence, exploited byjoe roberts, but such openings were few. France surged, a first try for the debutant. Wales slipped further behind when Gareth Davies got it all wrong. France were not quite finished, a fourth bonus point winning try, and wales beaten 45 24. Yet to win in this years tournament, that wooden spoon looms large. So its been a tough championship for wales. They have to beat italy next weekend to make sure that they dont finish bottom. Ireland will retain the title if they beat the scots in dublin. It is massive, but you cannot hide away from it, you have to embrace the challenge, there will be a lot of external pressure, we understand that, but we will need to be able to step it up, it is about making sure that we learn from the things we are doing, a young group of players who are not quite ready, some of them are not quite ready at this level, they have to learn really quickly about what test match rugby is all about, how youre going to be accurate, you have to stay in the fight, you have got to control things, and, yeah, just got to keep doing what we have been doing in training, making sure we are a bit more clinical for longer periods, so that we keep improving. Lets have a quick look at some of the other stories. Moto gp World Champion Francesco Bagnaia made the perfect start to the defence of his title in qatar. The italian rose from fifth on the grid to take the lead on the opening lap and went on to win at losail by more than a second. South Africas Brad Binder was second with spainsjorge marteen completing the podium. Italysjonathan meelan delighted the home fans as he won the final stage of tirenno adriatico. Tour de france champion Yonas Vingergo finished in the main group behind him and that was enough to secure overall victory for the dane. Britains tom pidcock was ninth overall. Belgiums World Time Trial champion Remco Evenepoel came out on top on the final stage of the paris nice. Finishing right behind him was american matteojorgenson, who claimed the biggest win of his career with overall victory. Our top story, in the premier League Liverpool 1 1 Manchester City. Arsenal stay top of the premier League Tonight from goal arsenal stay top of the premier League Tonight on Goal Difference from liverpool, Manchester City a point further back. That is just about it from sportsday. Burnley and Sheffield United are cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table, ben croucher and Michael Brown assess what is going wrong for those two sides. This programme was recorded on friday, so the league table shows the standings before this weekend. Hello. I have a question for you, two actually. What happens when that dream of returning to the Premier League turns into a nightmare . Was promotion really worth it . And that is where our focus lies on todays football news show, all in the company of former Sheffield United midfielder Michael Brown, trying to figure out just why burnley and the blades have done so badly this season, and if the seemingly inevitable does happen, how do they bounce back . We will take a look at the table before the games this weekend if youre watching this after the teams have played. They have an identical record in the Premier League this season, 20 defeats, Sheffield United on course to have the worst defensive record in premier League History, 72 goals conceded is an unwanted record at this stage of the Premier League season. The most by any side in englands top four divisions since fourth tier doncaster in 1997 98. Sheffield united are bottom on attacking and defensive stats and burnley second bottom. Only three teams in premier League History have had fewer points at this stage, so, michael, apart from scoring more and conceding fewer goals, how do they get out of this . It is tough, how do they get out of it this season . Unfortunately the squads are what they have got. The situation was slightly different for burnley, but with Sheffield United, recruitment was very late, but with burnley, for instance, they have done well so quickly to get from the championship into the Premier League, 16 or 17 players, they had to change that around, they had to do it all over again but with a different point, when youre spending money you have to keep these players, but you also have to see value, that is what they have done, so the longer term more stability for burnley was important. Lets bring in a Sheffield United fan. Three of the last five seasons, you have been in the Premier League. What do you have to show for it . Very little, to be fair. We got the news yesterday that were hopefully going to be moving to a new training ground, but very little, to be fair. We saw it last time when we got relegated very unceremoniously back in 2021, we started the next season with a few new players, a new manager, new approach, we were stuttering and stalling, we really did not kick on until heckingbottom came in. We will have to buy in a lot, i think a lot of players will be leaving, so there are a few gems in there who can come forward, hopefully getting some Notjust Gametime but positive gametime, because i worry that sometimes dropping them into the likes of monday night might not be the best thing in terms of their experience or the effect it might have, but i think, yeah, just hopefully trying to work out as many of the players we are going to have next season, getting them playing together as much as possible, almost using it as a proxy pre season. Burnley, then. This time last year, michael, you sat down with Vincent Kompany for this very programme. He tried to Stay Grounded despite many people tipping him to be a future Manchester City manager. My goal is to get better. I think city should always have the best manager in the world, nobody else, and that is not me. My focus is burnley getting better, and well see, maybe you only get| shown how far i am from being that guy, but eventually i work as i can to get better every time. Not getting carried away with himself, but it has not clicked in the Premier League this season. Overhaul of players in the summer is one factor, but thats the game, isnt it . It is. They have bought for the future, when they have spent the money. It is difficult, when you want to play the style that Vincent Kompany does, play out from the back, goalkeeper, big signings still being criticised, still throwing it into midfield, why not . If it is not working, why is he not going to change . The point was, how does he change . I have this group of players who play now here to play football in this way. Does he then have everyone behind the ball, going direct to the striker . You have to have those tools to do that and understand what the philosophy is. Lets speak to yet another person now. Vincent kompany, who seems to have escaped much of the scrutiny that a manager 19th in the Premier League with burnley s record would get. Why do you think that is . Why have the fans stuck with him . We are a loyal fanbase, i think a lot of us can see the bigger picture. I think he will go on to be a good manager, and i want him to be a good manager with us. If we get rid of him now, what would be the point . We are going down anyway, ten games to go. But it is starting to get a bit louder in the fanbase now, it is about sticking with him now in my eyes, it is about taking a step back, looking into next season and the season after when were hopefully back in the Premier League, but i think a lot of frustration has come from how good last season was, as you mention, to this one being so bad, that is where the frustration boils down to, because we are cut adrift, lets be honest, and the only way we stay up as if the points deductions come in for everton or forest. Nobody wants to stay up that way, i will take it, dont get me wrong, but i think if that happens, luton benefit from that anyway, not us, and we still go down. Promoted teams came up. Last season, a very different story where all three promoted teams came up. This season, the bottom three are the three sides a cue from the last year. Potentially for the first time they could well be replaced by the same three teams that they replaced in the Premier League, leicester, leeds, southampton. Ipswich might want a say in that. But what does that say about finances within the top two tiers and the competitiveness . We are going to speak to another person now, if you can believe that. Is this a quirky sport in coincidence . No, that it is part of a pattern. When something happens for the first time ever, the tendency to say is, if it has not happened before, it cannot really be a problem. But it is part of a pattern of those clubs are relegated from the Premier League feeling like they have a competitive advantage to get straight back there within the first two years, partly because of the gap between the two weeks, so they come down with stronger squads than they did before, and also because of the parachute Payment System that gives them that extra economic leg up in a league where in the championship, where clubs generally make losses. Clubs are doing one of two things. One is that they are overstretching financially, we that with everton and Nottingham Forest trying to compete, i think we will see it we will see it with others, or they tread water, and that kind of makes fans weary in another way. I think the issue at the moment is clubs are seeing huge losses, lets say £105 million over three years, they are saying that as a target, not as a limit. The target has to be sustainability. But to do that, there has to be a complete change of ethos, that this kind of Desperation Culture to get to the Premier League, which is fuelled by the money on offer, this Definition Culture to stay there that fuels overspending once you get there, that has to shift, and i think the only way that happens is of the desperation reduces, and to produce, there needs to be a smaller economic gap between the two divisions. Really interesting, thanks forjoining us. That is all we have time for, thanks to everyone and to you for watching, see you again next time, goodbye. Hello. For many of us, sundays weather story has been one of cloud and rain and where youve been stuck under those grey and wet conditions, particularly when youve been exposed to the breeze, it has felt decidedly chilly. Temperatures, though, will climb through the week ahead, albeit with some further bouts of rain at times. Low pressure has been dominating things through the weekend, that low centred just to the south of us, clouds swirling around it. And this stripe of cloud that you can see here, that has been producing some outbreaks of quite heavy and persistent rain. Now, the rain will slowly but surely peter out as we head through the night. Certainly the heaviest bursts will ease, but itll stay quite damp and drizzly with some areas of mist and hill fog and any clear spells that you might see across, say, south wales and the south west of england, well, they could just fill in with patchy fog as well. So monday morning, quite a murky start. Its an in between day, really. This low clearing eastwards, other Weather Systems waiting but for many of us, not a huge amount going on, aside from a lot of cloud, some mist and murk, a few brighter spells, perhaps most especially for wales and the south west of england. This area of low pressure mayjust bring some rain perilously close to the east coast of england and this frontal system will bring some rain across Northern Ireland and into western scotland. Temperatures 6 celsius in lerwick, 12 celsius in plymouth. Through monday night and into tuesday, this little Weather System saunters its way in from the west. This first pulse of wet weather bringing rain across wales, parts of the midlands and southern england. As we start tuesday, that should tend to pull away southwards, but well see more rain getting into Northern Ireland, perhaps west wales, North West England and South West Scotland as we head towards the end of the afternoon. Temperatures, though, beginning to creep upwards. The winds start to come from the south or the south west, so well see highs between 8 13 celsius. A sign of things to come. Through the middle of the week, these frontal systems just continue to wriggle around but will generally shift northwards. Some outbreaks of rain, yes, but a feed of pretty mild air starts to set itself up. Those South Westerly Winds bringing a mild, even warm feel to proceedings, actually, particularly where you get to see some sunshine, and there will be some sunshine as we head through the second half of the week and into the weekend. But some rain at times. Those temperatures, though, up to around 16 or 17 celsius. Bye for now. Live from london, this is bbc news.
