The largest local authority in europe declared itself effectively bankrupt tx gfx and needs to make around 300 Million Pounds in savings. Residents in the city gfx will see a 10 increase in their Council Tax Residents in the city will see a 10 increase in their council tax this april and a total rise of 21 by april 2025. Last september, the council said it could not afford to meet its financial obligations. The cuts touch on everything from reduced Waste Collections to dimmed street lighting. The measures have been described by those on the labour led council john cotton. Response ability cuts both ways, and what we havent heard at any stage this afternoons acceptance from conservative colleagues that their party bears any responsibility for that National Crisis in local government. Five hours for Birmingham City council to agree a budget thats going to have an impact across the whole community. They need to save £300 million over the course of the next two years. So really almost every service from libraries to arts funding to leisure to parks to social care and some support for the most vulnerable are all in line for cuts. And at the same time, council tax is going to go up by 10 each year over the course of the next two years. Now, there was a lot of blame thrown around during the course of this council meeting. The conservative councillors here in birmingham said that the labour administration, which runs the council, is at fault. There were problems with an outstanding equal pay claim and a botched it system. The Labour Leader did acknowledge that mistakes have been made and he apologised for those. He also said there had been a chronic underfunding of local government by Central Government and that was part of the problem that Birmingham City council found itself in. Now its true its not the only council to have effectively gone bankrupt. Recently, there have been a handful of others that have found themselves in that extreme situation and more broadly, across the board there are local government leaders who are warning about financial pressures. They say that the funding they get isnt matching the demand and the cost of providing the services that they have to do. So lots of councils looking at making cuts. Now the government did make extra funding available for councils in england at the start of this year, some £600 million. And we expect the chancellor, jeremy hunt, to tell councils in his word to cut back on what he calls wasteful spending on things like consultants or diversity schemes when he delivers his budget on wednesday. But were not at this stage expecting a lot more money for councils to be forthcoming. So i expect you will see these warnings from the sector continue to grow. But in birmingham, talking to people in the city today, theres a lot of concern at the impact of these significant cuts right across the city.
