courtesy of the one one draw between arsenal and psv eindhoven in the netherlands. arsenal manager mikel arteta happy with a side return to europe's premier competition. overall, i think. very, very positive over the last six, i seven years without being in the competition with a team that hasn't got a lot l of experience there. i think we have competed very, very well. _ i really like the approach of - the team in every single game, the way we have tried to to play. and dominate the opponent. we have some big results and big experiences as well. newcastle united manager eddie howe believes that wednesday's champions league match with ac milan has got all the hallmarks of being a special game. newcastle must see off the italian side at stjames's park to reach the knockout stages and hope paris saint—germain don't beat already qualified borussia dortmund. newcastle are third in group f level on points with milan and two points behind second placed psg. with desperate to stay in this competition first and foremost. and if we can't then stay involved in europe. we work so hard to get into this position in the first place. we gave everything last year to try and achieve european football. we don't want to give it away lightly, so know our intention. on behalf of me, the players, the coaching staff is to do everything we can to try and win the match. was an interesting meeting in group h on wednesday as shakhtar donetsk play porto two sides level on points in the group meeting. it's a winner takes all clash for a place in the knockout stage of the competition. shakhtar are on a good run, having won three matches in a row in all competitions without conceding a single goal stat that will boost their confidence going into this crucial fixture. the main goal is achieved, but we are professional football players, so professional team and we are very ambitious. so if you're so close to achieve your highest level, so you then you have to go 100% for that. great that we are there in europe, but we want more. and we're going to play for more. so that's for sure. erling haaland will miss manchester city's final group game against red star belgrade on wednesday. it's nothing really riding on the match city, of course. ready group winners and guardiola but we ring the changes as he looks ahead to the club world cup in saudi arabia next week. we're going to rotate some players, but because you have three days travel, five, six hour, three day, three day semifinal potential final. so and i'm very pleased to tomorrow to see many players that didn't play lately be involved in the team. absolutely. i'm very pleased. well, two teams already in saudi are al—ittihad and auckland city. karim benzema created club world cup history for the saudi arabian side by becoming the first player to score in four editions of the tournament as the hosts booked their place in the second round after 3—0 win over the new zealanders. romario opened the scoring in the 29th minute with his deflected effort before french world cup winner n'golo kante doubled the lead five minutes later with superbly struck volley. benzema completed the his hospital bed mela there scene in your screen was called in his hospital bed by the turkish president on tuesday. doctors have confirmed he'd suffered a fractured eye socket. while turkish football journalist bagis ayrton says the kind of language used by the big clubs and even the turkish football federation this season has been completely unacceptable. presidents of big clubs, vice presidents, all the members, even turkish football federation didn't take responsibility to really prevent those discussions. but these are not discussions. these are sometimes threats, these arms, these are mostly almost violence because they, i think, raised their fist but didn't punch just raise their fists, furious is ankara, your president. but i think behind of it, many of them are responsible. violence against referees has been growing and growing issue, rather, here in the uk as well. and we caught up with former english official keith hackett for his thoughts on the incident in turkey and his concerns about football closer to home. i was really, really shocked. i mean, you know, this is a fifa referee. this is a game at the elite level where you would expect some modicum of security that would prevent this. watching the brutality, you have to say this is not anything to do with football, not anything to do with a refereeing decision. you know, this guy has got to be banned for life from football. this guy is a complete and utter disgrace. the turkish affair, he must be hanging their head in shame because this is a president of a football club. he's not a fan. he's someone in authority that should be setting an example and where behaviour goes over the top and out of control, then i think that's up to the authorities and in some cases the police to deal with that. this is a referee, 37 years old, fifa official, regarded very highly. and i understand this morning he's considering whether he should continue as a referee. that is so, so sad. juventus and italy legend giorgio chiellini has announced his retirement at the age of 39, describing his career as the most beautiful and intense journey of his life. centre half made his name atjuventus, where he won nine consecutive serie a titles from 2011 to 2020. he was also a crucial player for his country, captaining the azzurri as they won euro 2020. he'd been playing in major league soccer with lafc, who was a strong innings by aiden markram and reeza hendricks. the latter, as you can see, falling just short of his 50, laying the platform for the five wicket win with seven balls to spare. to rugby union and henry arundel will be ineligible for england selection after signing a new two year deal to play club rugby for asking 92 in france, 21—year—old wing joined the paris side after london irish went bankrupt. he was given special dispensation to play in the upcoming six nations, but that has been revoked after he chose to stay longer in france rather than join an english club. the new contract means rfu rules not allowing players based abroad to be selected for england now apply. arundel announced his arrival to racing fans with a hat trick against toulon last month. and that is sadly all the time we've got left for now from me, marc edwards, and the rest of the team here at the bbc sports centre. bye— bye. hello there. wednesday's weather will see big improvements. it will brighten up very nicely from the west and over the next few days, for the vast majority of us, it will turn a lot drier. high pressure starts to build in from the south, will say, turning milder into the weekend with westerly winds and temperatures rising across the board into double figures once more. now, that very slow—moving area of low pressure continues to meander its way into the continent. still plenty of clouds and showery outbreaks of rain for much of eastern england. we're keeping that cloud here, too, for much of the day, but it'll brighten up very nicely across northern england, much of wales and down through the south west of england. still rather blustery for irish sea coasts, but some more sunshine for northern ireland and for much of scotland, but some lingering freezing fog for quite some time. and it will be feeling colder as well, 5—10 degrees celsius north to south with quite a chilly northerly wind blowing. but it's only a brief cold spell because then we've got a warm front waiting out towards the northwest that's going to be pushing southwards and eastwards on wednesday night, turning briefly to snow across the highlands, the pennines, the cheviots southern uplands, perhaps before quickly turning back to rain. and that weather front is weakening as it pushes southwards and eastwards, bringing milderfeeling air. of course, few patches of drizzle, some increased cloud for the south east of england on thursday afternoon. but again, an improving picture from the west and some showers just pushing into western scotland, too. temperatures starting to climb for many towards the west, but still rather chilly towards the south and the east. now on friday morning, a cold start again for the south and the east will see a lot of cloud out towards the west. a south—westerly winds now and we're starting to see some showers out towards the north west of scotland, too. temperatures will be creeping up with that south—westerly wind, of course. high pressure is building in from the south. so if we just take a look at the bigger picture, you can see that high here starting to extend in from the south and that's sending all of the weather fronts skirting out towards the north and the west. so we'll still see some outbreaks of rain across parts of northern scotland. it will still be mild here. we've got brisk westerly winds, so there won't be any issues with frost and fog. and in fact, temperatures are set to rise as we head through the weekend. so we'll be seeing 11 or 12 degrees celsius, 13 for some of the milder air set to stick around for the rest of the week. and it should be largely dry for most. bye— bye. welcome to newsday. reporting live from singapore, i'm mariko 0i. the headlines. the un general assembly overwhelmingly
