in gaza and also here in the west bank, where more prisoners, more women and children will be released. we have to remember there's a very large number of palestinians in israeli captivity. just since october 7th, israel detained more than 3,000 palestinians, including journalists, including minors and community leaders. so this these additional two days will bring a lot of hope to many homes. just give me a sense of what it is like in the west bank. over the last few days, we've seen so many pictures from israel, the reunions there. give me a sense of what it's like, the mood for palestinians. well, the mood is mixed because on the one hand, of course, there is happiness for the families who have been united with their loved ones, whether the women or children. and on the other, there is a sense of of guilt about that happiness, given the tragedy that is unfolding in gaza. but there's also hope among other families of the thousands of palestinians in israeli jails that they may be next, that they may be reunited with their loved ones next. and everybody understands that this might happen in stages, that these will be difficult negotiations. but the more we hear about these extensions, the higher the hopes would be for those families. and just in terms of the breakdown, when we get to the end of today, it will be 150 palestinians that have been released. what is the breakdown? are they principally teenage boys, women? take me through that. well, the majority are children, yes. the number of women in the total list, i think that israel approved with just 300 that made made it possible to extend the ceasefire without going back to the cabinet. there were, i believe, approximately 33 women included. so the majority are kids. most of them are from the west bank, but many i think about a third maybe from occupied eastjerusalem. at least one third of them have not been charged with anything. they were just detained and about another third was in administrative detention. so they were in detention serving six up to six months and maybe even more without facing trial or charge. and the same applies to some of the women, although others had been sentenced in israeli military courts, which palestinians don't recognize as legitimate. i spoke of the imagery we've seen out of israel, the interviews as well. i mean, there has been so much material. it has been reported that actually there's been a clampdown in the west bank. and that is why we haven't seen a similar set of images and interviews from palestinians. is that what is happening? are you seeing any sort of clampdown about how this is being allowed to be reported ? absolutely. and the clampdown got worse and worse on the first day there was tear gas. 0n the second day it got there was live fire. and yesterday itjust became impossible for journalists and for family members to be around and to have that picture that everybody was waiting for. and i believe today nobody is going to be allowed near the prison where the icrc would take take those prisoners and release them to their families. the israeli minister of national security, i believe his name is itamar ben—gvir, who has a who is subjected palestinian prisoners to extreme conditions, as we're hearing now from those released, has also prohibited any sign of celebration. injerusalem, the police has raided the homes of some of those prisoners released. they've confiscated candy and sweets that the family had. and they've been they've warned them that any sign of celebration could result in fines or even jail. john kirby welcoming the extension of two days of this truce saying he hoped a further 20 women and children would be released as a result. i have been speaking to the former hostage negotiator all of her maternity negotiated with hamas to secure the release of the israeli soldier affected back in 2006 and freed five years later. he gave me his assessment of the current negotiations going on. you're in a war zone. and as far as we understand, the hostages are not all in one place. they have to be identified where they are. they have to be brought to a safe space where they can be processed and then passed through to the international red cross. so all of those stages, i think, are fraught with difficulties. and i assume that the first hostages were easy, easier to pass through the process than now, where we understand, as i said, there are difficulties in locating where many of them are. yes, because we had a sense of this in the early weeks, but it is becoming increasingly clear and we heard it from qatar's prime minister talking to the financial times, saying that in their view, they think that hamas doesn't have direct control of maybe up to a0 women and children. they are scattered amongst other groups, islamichhad. how difficult will it be, do you think, for hamas to actually get direct control of those people? well, i think they will be able to do so provided the ceasefire holds. from day one i understood that the hostages were dispersed by the people who took them and some of them we believe were individuals, were crime groups and so forth and other militant groups. so it is a difficult process, especially under the bombardment and shelling. and that's why i've been saying that the two targets that netanyahu set won the elimination of hamas. and secondly, the safe delivery of the hostages back to their families, to me seem totally incompatible. and i had sent a message that i received two or three days after the events on october the seventh, which everyone recognises were deplorable. i sent a message saying that it was recognised that taking civilians and was a mistake and it shouldn't have happened and that all of the civilian hostages could be handed back without condition provided there was the correct environment in which it would do could be done, and that would be a temporary ceasefire at least. as news of that truce extension was breaking i spoke to a senior resident scholar at the arab gulf state institute in washington who gave me this assessment. hat gave me this assessment. not surrised gave me this assessment. iirrt surprised because gave me this assessment. iifrt surprised because so far despite the fits and starts and arguing over the devil in the details this is gone fairly well. i think both sides are perfectly happy to get rid of the women and children that each is holding. some of the palestinian women and children that we are talking about have been detained by israel without charge for years and years. so they are virtually hostages themselves, actually. so i think it is a bad look on both sides to have these women and children and they are willing to give them up. i think mr gardner was exactly correct that the high—value hostages like the europe and israeli soldiers will be another matter, but i think that truce also helps both sides think about what they are going to do next. hamas can use this to dig itself and prepare for the israeli onslaught onslaught in the south, israel though can use this to evaluate how it went in the north which was good in some ways and yet very bad in some ways and plan and think more about how they are going to attack the south and also the burning issue of what happens after the israeli assault is over. {th the israeli assault is over. of course the israeli assault is over. of course president biden, behind the scenes, applying a lot of pressure about exactly that point you have raised about tactics in the south and the worries around civilian casualties. i will come back to that point in a moment, but in terms of hostages you were talking there about women and children. could you envisage in the coming days that it could then life. but there is no doubt that there are plenty more categories the people including for instance the elderly, the infirm, etc, who could be exchanged without, let's say in a similar kind of there was quite a bit of rain around. over the next few days, things are changing again because we're back into something drier. barring the odd wintry shower, we're back into colder air again and that means more frost overnight. now this area of low pressure, the weather front and cloud wrapped around it, brought the earlier rain that's been moving south eastwards now heading out into the continent where we'll see more snow falling, particularly for the alps. and then following that low pressure, we're going to tap into colder air that will move back down from the north in the next few days. there's a north—easterly breeze, though, picking up for a while overnight that's going to blow in more showers off the north sea, push them into england, perhaps towards wales, a few wintry ones coming into northern scotland. but the rest of scotland, northern ireland and later on the north of england will have clearer sky. so a frost more likely here, whereas further south there's going to be a bit more cloud around. that cloud will break up during tomorrow morning. there still could be one or two light showers in the south—west. and we've got a couple of bands of showers with some snow over the hills moving down across scotland. but for many parts of the uk may well be a dry day on tuesday. more sunshine than today, but it's just a little bit colder — temperatures of 5—7 degrees. and with those clearer skies and light winds, temperatures will fall away very quickly after dark. and we're looking at widespread frost as we head through tuesday night, wednesday morning, minus four example. now the forecast for later in the week was causing us a few headaches, but it looks more likely now that this area of low pressure is going to steer to the south of the uk. so the threat of significant snow is reduced, but of course if the low is further north into the colder air, we could be back into a snowy story. but with a low to the south, we're going to tap into much colder air
