i really hoped would get through the rest of the speech without doing that, old habits die hard. we want to listen and ensure you know you will have an year at the heart of government. it does not mean that we will always agree and can always respond to the precise requests you have of us, but i want to know what you and your officers and your communities feel. for me, that is absolutely key. there is no such thing, i hate the phrase a minor crime. if you are on the receiving end of crime none of it feels minor. we see the terrible situation of the retail crime at the moment and i think chris spoke about that. anti—social behaviour, for the people who feel that, it hurts and quite understandably they want us to do something about it so there is no such thing as a minor crime. everybody deserves the right to feel safe in their daily lives. but the sad truth of the matter is we do have very serious criminal here that you also have to deal with and much of that, as challenging as it ever was is made more challenging because for example the use of the internet and social media. these things also facilitate people trafficking, drug trafficking, county lines, and the public quite rightly expect us to deal with these things on their behalf so they don't have to live in fear. as things become more challenging and become inevitably more complex, i want you to know that i will back you when you take the action you need to take. of course i will push you and cajole you and demand of you excellence in performance every stage because i know that is very much the attitude you will want to apply to yourselves and your forces but i also want you to know i will back you when you do the right thing. i want you to know that i will be critical if i think you need to be critical but i will always attempt to do so professionally, calmly, directly so that we always maintain that professional working relationship and i think you can have a relationship that has challenged, that demands excellence and professionalism without having to be in a relationship of conflict. the two are not inextricably linked stop and that is why those of you who have worked with me before will know my instinct is always to praise in public and criticise in private. if you, your officers, your staff respond to that style of working i genuinely believe we can maximise the work we do on behalf of the british people and ultimately that is my aim, that is my aim. and so give me opportunities to champion success, let me know about individuals or teams that should be celebrated stop i want the people of this country to see when you and your teams do well and i want to share in your successes, an important part of the confidence we need to build in the policing of this country. i could go on but i won't. i will finish quite simply by once again saying thank you. i know in policing thanks is a bit of a rarity, doesn't come often enough, but i want to thank you and want to thank all those officers, all those members of staff who put themselves in challenging situations, often in danger, not for their own benefit but for the benefit of the communities that they serve, and i want you to pass on to them my gratitude for the work that they are doing, and i want you to accept my thanks for the work that you do making uk policing unique, and one of the privileges of my old job as foreign secretary is you get to look back at your old job through the eyes of people around the world and particularly when i see how policing happens in other parts of the world and you come back and look at our wonderful model, policing by consent largely unarmed, it is a bright beacon internationally of effective policing, something that is to be celebrated, champion and protected. i will seek to do that with your help. ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much. we help. ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much-— you very much. we are “ust leaving that speech — you very much. we are “ust leaving that speech there. _ the new home secretary james cleverly delivering a speech there and the live pictures. that was the first speech in his new role for james cleverly and is started by saying it was unexpected, he was planning to be in ukraine delivering a speech as foreign secretary and of course david cameron is no delivering that following the reshuffle delivered last week. we saw him talking about a challenging time for police, especially referring to protests and the ongoing protest marches through london. asking for police officers and chief to talk to him about issues and concerns they had. he they are really pushing the point he has an open door policy, seeing him make up —— and he said that he might not always agree but urging police to talk to him. he spoke of minor crimes, such as retail crime is it saying people should not be living in fear and retail crime and minor crime can often escalate. i think a few words to note from james cleverly. really pushing the point two police officers, senior police officers, seeing i will back you, your work needs to be celebrated and championed. this is really showing his support to officers which i think is important to note because it is different to his predecessor, suella braverman who was sacked after accusing police of showing bias in favour of left—wing protest. that is an approach people expected him to take. that was james cleverly, the new home secretary delivering his first speech live in london here on bbc news. let's head know to the chief of the metropolitan police, mark rowley. let's listen to what he has to say. it is absolutely the right answer going back to what i said earlier about the uk being a country centred on it anticipate organisation that has its challenges but i think it is the right attitude. in terms of the partnership question, i can't answer specifics on what is going on there at the moment but i think fundamentally policing has to be a partnership operation and the point i was making about community crime fighting, the tactics police bring are normally problem—solving, enforcement, more suppressive. the long—term solutions which may be about issues such as mental health, substance and alcohol abuse, all thoseissues substance and alcohol abuse, all those issues are never going to be our specialism so you need the combination and i think the partnerships with local authorities and health services are critical at and health services are critical at a local level so the broad principle and there are many examples of taking offenders who are prolific offenders but driven by a drugs habit, there are many examples without problem can be dealt with through most affect. and technology, the guy they are. the through most affect. and technology, the guy they are-— the guy they are. the met commissioner _ the guy they are. the met commissioner sir - the guy they are. the met commissioner sir mark i the guy they are. the met - commissioner sir mark rowley the guy they are. the met _ commissioner sir mark rowley talking earlier on about violence against women and children, an issue which has put the met under fire following the murder of sarah everard and anotherfew the murder of sarah everard and another few high—profile deaths especially in london so focusing on that and seeing it as an under resourced area. and we listen to the home secretary, the very new home secretary, james cleverly delivering that speech a few moments ago. what did you take from that first speech? after weeks of debate about protest in policing we were looking to see if the new home secretary would draw a line between himself and suella braverman, sacked on monday and we got that in this line, to press in public and to criticise and private. —— mike praise. many people have regarded suella braverman as more about pandit than politician by putting her thoughts into column inchesin putting her thoughts into column inches in newspapers, particularly inches in newspapers, particularly in her description of what she described as heat marches, the free palestine marches through london —— hate marches. james cleverly said many times i will back you, when you need to take action i will back you and his key message was we will work together. find and his key message was we will work touether. * , , w and his key message was we will work touether. * ,, , together. and the issue facing james cleverl , together. and the issue facing james cleverly. the — together. and the issue facing james cleverly, the home _ together. and the issue facing james cleverly, the home secretary, - cleverly, the home secretary, deporting asylum seekers to rwanda. the prime minister saying he will try to push through emergency legislation and resurrect this plan even after the court ruled it unlawful. what position are we seeing james cleverly putting forward when it comes to this issue? he has been on the airwaves this morning clearly backing rishi sunak and we are —— reiterating his position of a new treaty with rwanda which they think will be the silver bullet and address the concerns that were issued by the supreme court. we have just had a tweet from the rwanda government spokesperson who has referred to the supreme court judgment is both unjustified and hypocritical. they point out that the rewind and record according to the rewind and record according to the united nations whose position was used in the supreme court is a reason why britain could not proceed with the current plan, rwanda says the united nations said its racket in rwanda was exemplary —— record in rwanda was exemplary and pointed out 170 stranded migrants from libya are expected to arrive in rwanda today and called it the 15th evacuation since 2019 supporter home secretary, the british prime minister and the rwanda government pushing against the supreme court ruling. lets rwanda government pushing against the supreme court ruling.— the supreme court ruling. lets move on from that- _ catherine burns has been to one hospital trying to improve its safety rating. bbc analysis has found that two—thirds of nhs maternity units in england don't consistently meet safety standards. that's worse than a year ago, when the figure was just over half. the health regulator, the care quality commission, says maternity has the worst safety ratings of all hospital services it inspects. our health correspondent, catherine burns, has been to one i think something's going wrong. that's why i'm getting out. there's something wrong with the baby, i think. we were filming on a corridor in the labour ward at northwick park hospital in north—west london,
