some aid continues to get through — a royaljordanian air force cargo plane has dropped several containers of humanitarian relief supplies over the gaza strip. the update was shared in a tweet by thejordanian king. jordan's state news agency said the consignment was urgent medical aid for thejordanian field hospital in gaza. israeli media reports say the air drop was carried out in co—ordination with the israeli military. meanwhile, the us has stepped up diplomatic efforts in the region. secretary of state antony blinken is now in turkey, for meetings with the country's foreign minister. the country's cia director william burns is also now in israel — urging greater effort to avoid civilian casualties. and in the last few hours, the white house has said vice president kamala harris will discuss the conflict in a phone call with unnamed foreign leaders today. this is live — looking across at the gaza strip, where it's currently just after iiam. we'll bring you more on all of those latest developments in the next half hour — but we begin our coverage with this report from our middle east correspondent yolande knell. explosions the relentless bombardment continues. the latest israeli strikes in northern gaza among the most intense so far and, once again, phone and internet lines were cut. this was yesterday's aftermath. locals say dozens were killed. said's wife and daughters were wounded. he searches on for his neighbours. "can anyone hear me inside?" he shouts. "there are people." this is part of gaza where civilians had been told to flee to. israel's military says it is looking into whether it was operating in the area at the time. israel's ground invasion is advancing. its military says it has now divided the territory into two and that it is doing what it can to avoid civilian casualties. for several hours, israeli forces said they opened a route for gazans to head south. but relatively few made the journey. on his latest stop in turkey, the us secretary of state is hearing calls for an immediate ceasefire from around the region. washington backs short pauses in fighting. everyone would welcome it because, again, it would advance things we are all trying to accomplish, including getting hostages back, including getting a lot more assistance into gaza, including getting people out of gaza. one of the more than 240 hostages being held in gaza is 84—year—old elma avraham. her family found this photo online, where she is seen being taken by hamas. her son worries how she is coping without her medication. right now, we are four weeks after that. four weeks and one day and they are still not here. and they should be here yesterday. not today, yesterday. i am like in some horror movie that does not stop. but, yeah, i still have hope. israel says that without progress on releasing the hostages, it won't agree to any pause in hostilities. for now, for so many, each day brings only more suffering. yolande knell, bbc news, jerusalem. that is the latest from gaza. we also following some developments overnight from further north. this is on israel's border with lebanon. lebanese state media say three children and their grandmother have been killed by an israeli military strike on a car near the border. the israeli military said it had targeted a vehicle identified as suspect a transport for terrorists and was checking reports that civilians were inside. hezbollah said it had fired multiple rockets at northern israel in retaliation. live now to hugo bachega. could you bring us up today with the latest? so many concerns about this conflict escalating. what is the from where you are? escalating. what is the yesterday one of the worst incidents here in lebanon so far, four civilians killed according to lebanese authorities, including three children. they said that their car was hit by an israeli strike. i think over the weekend there was some cautious optimism following the speech by the influential leader of hezbollah, hassan nasrallah, who on friday made his first public speech since this war between israel and hamas broke out. he gave no indication that hezbollah was planning to step up its attacks against israeli targets, although he did leave the door open for more attacks on israel, in particular he said the group would intensify its attacks if civilian casualties were reported here in lebanon. he said that the group would return to its strategy of civilian for civilian, in other words they would target israeli civilians if there were civilian casualties here in lebanon. so i think the fear after this attack is that the situation here could escalate. yesterday, pictures of the car that was hit, completely destroyed, were widely shared on social media, on lebanese television. there was some angry reaction here following that attack, the lebanese caretaker prime minister said it was a crime. hezbollah politicians have been saying israel would pay the price following that attack. and for weeks we have been talking about those cross—border attacks between hezbollah here in lebanon and the israeli army, and fears that the violence here could escalate and that lebanon could be dragged into this conflict. so far the violence he has been contained. but earlier this morning we heard the sounds of explosions in the distance not far from the border and there were reports that the israeli army was attacking some positions in lebanon along the border. tensions remain high morning and overnight will stop we have seen large explosions of a gaza about three kilometres away from here, plumes of smoke billowing in the distance, a colleague who i'm working with says it is one of the largest he has heard in his four weeks here and there has been the frequent thread of outgoing israeli artillery as well as israel pushes on with its military offensive. it says it has completed its encirclement of gaza city which it describes as the centre of the hamas terror network, in its words. and it has split gaza into two coming to north and south. it is encouraging civilians, 400,000 orso it is encouraging civilians, 400,000 or so according to the us, who remain in northern gaza to move south, and the israeli military have said they are opening the road, the refusing to move and say they can't move, many of them are elderly, ortoo can't move, many of them are elderly, or too infirm or too weak to move and if they do move the humanitarian needs in the south will only intensify further. the plight of civilians, the aid situation, the lack of aid and a dire humanitarian situation is getting worse and worse, and for more on that i spoke to a doctor doctor from medecins sans frontieres operating in an extremely difficult situation in gaza. as the plight of civilians worsens, the calls for a ceasefire or humanitarian pause from israel are growing louder. israel has said no to both stop a ceasefire suggest something longer term, a humanitarian pause would suggest something more localised and short term. israel says they will be neither of those until there is movement on the 240 or so hostages seized by hamas on the 7th of october. if there is movement or progress on that, potentially a visit by red cross officials for example, there could be talks on a humanitarian pause. if there is a release of the hostages that could lead to a ceasefire. at the moment and ask refusing both of those and israel is refusing to accept to stop the bombing. but it is likely, the us will receive more calls for a ceasefire from turkey today when the us secretary of state antony blinken is in turkey. he has talks with the turkish foreign minister. turkey has been vociferous in his condemnation of the israeli military offensive, as have arab countries as well, the us secretary of state has won him a line coming into us here, the us secretary of state has warned both hezbollah in lebanon, the militant group up there and iran that it is ready to act militarily against them if they escalate the conflict with israel. we have news that the us has sent a nuclear submarine to the area following two us aircraft carrier is being sent to the eastern mediterranean. all of these signs to iran and iranian proxies in the region that the us is ready to act against them if they were trying to seize the situation and exploit the situation to escalate this war even further. that is just one of the main concerns here. an escalation in the region, humanitarian plight, and the region, humanitarian plight, and the hostages who remain in gaza as the hostages who remain in gaza as the offensive pushes on. we will continue to bring you the latest from here in southern israel overlooking gaza. we have had a lot of plumes of smoke and lots of artillery fire and explosions as the military activity intensifies there and we will continue to bring all of that with you on bbc news. but for now i will hand you back to london. mark lowen in israel, thank you for bringing us up to date on all the lines, many different lines coming out of the region this morning. once again i will leave you with that picture of gaza. we have heard from the idf forces that have surrounded gaza city, troops have reached the coastline, but gaza has effectively been divided into gaza north and gaza south. plenty more to come from around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. let's look at some of the other stories making the news today. up to 20,000 health workers in england will receive a one—off bonus of at least 1,700 pounds, after previously missing a one—off bonus of at least £1,700, after previously missing out because they worked for non—nhs organisations. the extra payment was agreed as part of the nhs pay deal in england this year — but some staff were not included. after employers launched legal action, the government has now agreed to provide the funding. around 50 young people have clashed with riot police in edinburgh, with fireworks and petrol bombs being thrown at officers. videos posted on social media showed the police being bombarded with explosives — while bystanders watched the violence. there was similar disorder in the neighbourhood on bonfire night last year. a bbc panorama investigation has found the fast—fashion firm boohoo has broken promises to treat its suppliers more fairly. an undercover reporter at the company's hos saw evidence of staff pressuring suppliers into cutting prices, even after deals had been struck. you're live with bbc news. thank you forjoining us. overnight, united nations organisations and other aid agencies have issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire, describing the *horrific killings' of civilians in gaza as *an outrage'. the statement, signed by the heads of unicef, the un refugee agency, the world health organisation, save the children, care, the world food programme and many others, also called for the immediate release of aid hostages, adding *enough is enough'. the us is devoting several senior members of the biden administration to try to find a diplomatic way forward. vice—president kamala harris will host a phone call with world leaders later on monday, the director of the cia is in israel, to talk about intelligence co—operation. and the secretary of state, antony blinken, has arrived in turkey for talks with his counterpart in ankara. it's the fourth day of his second tour of the region since the war broke out — and he's already met with the israelis, the palestinian authority, and regional leaders at a gathering in baghdad. with more on blinken's visit to turkey, let's speak to our turkish about the situation regarding the situation in the israeli hamas war. turkish diplomatic sources say no joint press conference or a written statement has been scheduled at this stage. turkey is condemning israel because of its attacks on gaza which led to the death of more than 10,000 palestinians, palestinian authority say most of these people are either women or children. but we don't expect turkish president recep tayyip erdogan to host us secretary of state antony blinken in ankara. turkish president erdogan previously criticised antony blinken of using sectarian language for this conflict and we need to also remember our audience that when antony blinken toured the middle east following the hamas october seven attacks during his first middle east tour, he didn't visit turkey. but this time he visited turkey. it seems to be a short visit to turkey. but as i said before, we don't expect anyjoint press conference or written statement because there are differences of before the hamas attacks the normalisation process was going on between turkey and israel. but this process seems to be stopped. president erdogan on friday said he cut off personal ties with the israeli prime minister netanyahu. we have written him off, he said. and turkey recalled its ambassador, the israeli ambassador in israel for consultations. and honestly the israeli government is not happy with the turkish reactions and the rhetoric regarding hamas, unlike the united states and the european union turkey does not designate hamas as a terrorist organisation and turkey is hosting some hamas members as well and won a turkish president recep tayyip erdogan said hamas wasn't a terrorist organisation it was a mujahideen fighting for the liberation of palestinian people, obviously shortly. stay with us on bbc news. hello again. the weather this week is much quieter than it was last week. for most, notjust today, but for much of this week we're looking at sunny spells and scattered showers. some of the showers will be heavy and thundery, particularly in the west. and on wednesday, we'll see some rain crossing from west to east. more on that later. but what we have this afternoon are still a lot of showers in the west, some of them spreading into the midlands and northeast england. but in between and ahead of them, we will see some sunshine, especially northeast scotland, parts of eastern england and the southeast. the temperatures today ranging from nine to about 14 degrees. from 9 to about 14 degrees. so feeling fresh if you are out and about. through this evening and overnight, the breeze will tend to ease a touch in the english channel. there still will be some showers in the west and also parts of northeast england, the midlands, but under clear skies the temperature will fall away to around freezing in the northeast of scotland. so here there will be a touch of frost, but it will be a chilly start to the day wherever you are. and during the course of tuesday, again, we start off with all these showers in the west. some of them could still be heavy. but then we've got this ridge of high pressure building in. so things will ease, the showers will ease as we go through the course of the afternoon with temperatures 9 in the north to about 13 as we push further south. now, moving on into tuesday evening and overnight and through wednesday, we've got this clutch of weather fronts coming in from the atlantic, bringing in some rain. you can see from the isobars there will be strengthening winds with it too. so a wet start to the day, parts of western scotland, northwest england could have as much as 20 to 30 millimetres of rainfall. and that will continue to push eastwards lingering longest across the far southeast and also the northern isles. behind it, some sunshine, but also some showers with temperatures 8 in aberdeen, 10 in belfast and 13 in cardiff. now, moving towards the latter part of the week, you can see how that rain clears quite quickly. then low pressure starts to dominate the weather. there's a squeeze in the isobars and when we look at the direction the winds coming from, it's coming from the northwest. so the temperatures will be very similar to what we're looking at during the week. with that change in wind direction, it will feel that bit fresher than it has done. and by the weekend, we'll be looking at some more rain coming our way. this is bbc news — the headlines: huge plumes of smoke rise over gaza — after one of the most intense bombardments of the territory since the start
