American Officials Say they were responding to a number of attacks on their forces by iranian backed groups. Thank you forjoining us here on bbc news, day 21 of the girls are israel war. The gaza and israel war. Im lyse doucet. With hospitals in the gaza strip either shut or unable to provide medical help, pregnant women are being forced to give birth in dangerous conditions. The un says there are about 50,000 pregnant women in gaza now. One of them a woman called jumana has made a video diary of her experiences. Shes been speaking to bbc arabic s dalia haider. They speak arabic. A precious moment captured between a pregnant mother and daughter. Translation im about to deliver any time soon. I hope my second baby arrives safely and peacefully, but apparently she will come within a destruction. As israel carried out air strikes we asked jumana, a journalist from gaza city, to record a video diary in the lead up to giving birth. What scares me the most, what i think about every night as i fall asleep, is that we may not wake up. Two days after the conflict started, jumana evacuated with her four year old daughter and moved in with relatives further south, where they thought it was safer. I moved to another home. This is all the stuff i was able to take, the small bag and these things. Like the 2 million palestinians in gaza struggling with food and water shortages, jumana and herfamily are often cut off from the outside world. We dont have electricity so we cant watch the news on the television. Theres no internet. The radio is all we have if our phones dont die. Jumanas husband was away working. She feared for his life as he tried to bring more clothes for their newborn and a hospital bag. I hope he is safe because there are warnings about intensive strikes near us. I hope to god to bring him safely back to me. Im so scared. We tried to stay in daily Contact Withjumana despite the daily disconnection of phone lines and internet. Are you 0k . , i ask. Two days later she replies, yes, thank god, but honestly the situation is difficult. She told me there was intense bombing. Pray for us to be alive tomorrow. Jumana is one of 5500 women in gaza who, according to the un, expected to give birth within the next month. The un says they face huge challenges to access Safe Delivery services with overcrowded hospitals and a shortage of medicine. My labour has begun, but the problem is, will i find someone to Take Me To The Hospital . Jumana made it. But while she waited house near the hospital was bombed. In a few seconds everything in the hospital was turned upside down. There were more wounded. People were screaming everywhere. She told me all she was thinking about was delivering her daughter, no matter what. Hours later, talia was born. Do you love her . Jumana brought her newborn back home, but every night the fear they wont live to see another day. Dalia haider, bbc news. The story of giving birth in gaza, the story of so many women. 5000 women are expected to give birth during this current crisis. And it is notjust concern about pregnant women, women going into labour. In gaza, aid agencies fear that many people with treatable injuries will die because hospitals are running out of fuel. They are warning that they can only do the most urgent of operations. Aid agencies are repeating their calls for a humanitarian ceasefire, a pause, something for civilians to gain more protection and more aid. Joining me now is unicef sjonathan crickx. The number of children is always high. Do you have any sense at all about the statistics, about how children are suffering in this war . For us, it is very clear that we have never seen such levels, such a deadly escalation in the gaza strip since 2006. The figures that we are collecting and receiving are really very, very difficult to even fathom. We are talking about more than 2900 palestinian children reported killed, and we also should keep in mind, that there are an unknown number of children still abducted in the gaza strip. So for us it is a catastrophe, and the situation is absolutely unbearable. We are clearly calling for an immediate ceasefire, we are calling on all parties for that. 5 ceasefire, we are calling on all parties for that. Parties for that. As you know, unicef often parties for that. As you know, unicef often is parties for that. As you know, unicef often is in parties for that. As you know, unicef often is in Conflicts Parties for that. As you know, i unicef often is in conflicts around the world and they tried to establish safe spaces for children, so not only will they be safe from any of the military activity, they will feel safe. Is it possible now, do you have the staff on the ground to try to provide any kind of support for children . To try to provide any kind of support for children . Since the onset of this support for children . Since the onset of this escalation support for children . Since the onset of this escalation of onset of this escalation of violence, we have our staff there on the ground supporting hospitals, and the ground supporting hospitals, and the children who are in shelters. The reports im receiving are indicating that first and foremost, life is extremely difficult in the shelters, im talking about lack of food, lack of water, lack of medicine. The news report you were just showing before with the pregnant woman, 5000 babies are expected to be given birth to every month on average in the gaza strip, so you can imagine the situation. What we are trying to support is with Mental Health and social support. We are also supporting the delivery of medical supplies, medicines and water, but clearly the needs are so huge that especially without humanitarian aid going in a sustained way into the gaza strip, we are completely overwhelmed. find we are completely overwhelmed. And in that what the un calls a trickle of aid getting into gaza, among the medicines that are getting in, would you know whether there are some specifically for children . Because it is notjust a question of dead children, it is children who are injured or ill who may need special kinds of medicine. Injured or ill who may need special kinds of medicine. Yes, i have seen this morning kinds of medicine. Yes, i have seen This Morning Footage kinds of medicine. Yes, i have seen This Morning Footage of kinds of medicine. Yes, i have seen This Morning Footage of a kinds of medicine. Yes, i have seen This Morning Footage of a unicef This Morning Footage of a unicef convoy which was delivering medical supplies to one of the hospitals which is still functioning, and what i know is that almost everything in those supplies was medical supplies for surgery, and they are to support civilians and of course children. We have all seen the terrible footage of children being injured, arriving by dozens in hospitals, and clearly they are in dire need of medical supplies. They are in dire need of medical su lies. ,. , supplies. And here in israel, where so many children supplies. And here in israel, where so many children have supplies. And here in israel, where so many children have also supplies. And here in israel, where so many children have also been i so many children have also been traumatised by what happened in october the 17th, they are living with Air Raid Sirens even though they are not under the intense bombardment of the gaza strip. Is there also support being offered here on this side of the border too . Sow unicef in palestine is working on the gaza strip, but if they would be any core from the israeli government, there could be support that could be provided. The thing is that could be provided. The thing is that what matters to us is we are calling for an immediate ceasefire, because it is very important for us to highlight the Mental Health and psychosocial impact on both palestinian and israeli children and a terrible escalation of violence. The children who are affected by that kind of situation have difficulties to focus, difficulties to concentrate, and also difficulties to get on with education. And so it is really heartfelt call that we make to all parties for that immediate ceasefire, because we strongly believe that not a single child wherever he or she should be exposed to that, not any violence. Jonathan crickx, thank you very much forjoining us with your observations on the plight of children in this israel gaza war. Every day israel provides updates on their Military Campaign and the targets. On thursday, hamas held a Rare Press Conference in beirut in lebanon after which a spokesman told the bbc that the groups attack on israel on the 7th Of October which killed 1,400 people was aimed to be a Military Operation and he denied it was intended to target civilians. The latest estimate so that 11100 people were killed in the attack, mainly civilians. Israel now says 229 people, including women and children, were taken hostage. 0ur middle east correspondent hugo bachega carried out the interview with spokesman ghazi hamad. Lets listen again to what was said. There was no command, no command to kill any civilians. You say this was a Military Operation, but the result of it was that hundreds of civilians were killed. Because that area is very wide and there are many people there and there was clashes and confrontations. Its not confrontation. You invaded houses. I dont have the details of what happened inside, but i can tell you that we didnt have any intention or decision to kill the civilians. You say you were not targeting civilians. Yes. And you now have more than 200 hostages, many of them civilians. Why dont you then just release those civilians . We are ready to deal positively with the point of these hostages. We are not planning from the first moment to have the hostages, or as you said the civilians. I think that its a Military Operation, its a Military Operation. But how does it advance the palestinian cause . I dont accept it from you that we just kill the civilians in order to. Weve seen the evidence, weve seen the pictures. This is a shame for you to do that. It is not a question, it is a shame for you to do that. We are fighting for dignity and for freedoms, for freedom. By killing people in their homes, by invading a Music Festival and Killing Hundreds of people . We are fighting against occupation. Israel as a country, as a state, they provide and supply the occupation. Israel is a state of brutality, of massacres. How do you justify killing people as they sleep, you know, families . How do you justify Killing Hundreds of people in. . I want to stop this interview. Ghazi hamad, middle east spokesperson, interviewed by hugo bachega who repeatedly asked him why civilians had been targeted in this war both in terms of the death of israeli civilians but also the large and rising numbers of hostages who have been taken. Israel continues to intensify its Military Operations as we can report, there was a second night of incursions into the gaza strip, this time with helicopter gunships, and israel said all of its soldiers returned back to israel. Israel also said that the attack targeted and killed one of the senior commanders involved in planning the october seven attacks. We expect to see the Un General Assembly later today discussing and possibly voting on a mission, a motion brought forward byjordan and other states calling for a ceasefire in this escalating war. There is no sign of a ceasefire yet, but we will keep an eye on all the latest developments, but now i will hand you back to london for the rest of the days news. Lyse, thank you. Lets bring you a developing story in the United States. Hundreds of Armed Police Officers are searching for a gunman in the us state of maine, after a series of Mass Shootings in the city of lewiston left at least 18 people dead. Last night officers searched a house belonging to the subject, Reservist Robert Card who is considered to be armed and dangerous. Lets get the latest on this. Live now to cbs news correspondent Bradley Blackburn in lewiston, maine. Tell us the latest of what you are hearing, what you are seeing, because residents are still very much under lockdown, arent they . They are, celia. Residents have been told to stay in their homes, lock their doors. Businesses are shut down, students are being kept out of schools, so this community is really frozen in fear as authorities continue to search for this aspect, robert card. They have expanded their search, you mention they searched home last night when they believed he might be and he wasnt found there, so they have now expanded their search across the state of maine going into massachusetts, and all the way up to the border with canada. We know that Law Enforcement agencies are joining in, atf agents, us marshals, all participating in this search, and they are looking at wooded areas and even searching waterways, trying to find any place where this individual may have gone. They believe he had access to multiple vehicles. 50 may have gone. They believe he had access to multiple vehicles. Access to multiple vehicles. So what more is known access to multiple vehicles. So what more is known about access to multiple vehicles. So what more is known about Robert Access to multiple vehicles. So what more is known about robert card . I more is known about robert card . Because difficult questions are being raised about his past issues with his Mental Health, and also his access to quite serious weapons. Right. We are learning more about his history. He is a person who had a documented series of Mental Health issues. We understand from a Law Enforcement bulletin that cbs news reviewed that he was referred to treatment over the summer, was institutionalised after an episode where some of his military commanders in the army reserve were concerned about deteriorating signs of his Mental Health, and he had self reported issues more recently where he had heard voices and was experiencing delusions. And your question about the legal question here, of course laws here in the United States about guns are different from state to state, anna maine has some of the more lenient gun laws across the country, there is no red flag law here for instance that would allow authorities to step in and take weapons from somebody who is deemed a threat. You would imagine that after this shooting, that will be a conversation again. This is a place that has valued gun rights and has a deep connection to hunting and sports shooting, so those are all issues that are at play here. Those are all issues that are at play here those are all issues that are at la here. ~ , ~ ,. Play here. We will be keeping close tabs on that play here. Sj state media in china say the former premier li keqiang has died of a sudden heart attack. He was 68 years old. Mr li had served for a decade as the second most powerful Chinese Communist official before he stepped down in march to be replaced by a close ally of president xijinping. For more, heres our china correspondent stephen mcdonell. His passing represents the last contact with the previous administration, and a different way of doing things, with a collective leadership. He was the last figure from the last era, so when he stepped down it represented one break with the past, and it is in the even more significant now. In china, the death of a leader can bring about great change. The death of chairman mao of course represented enormous change here. Then grieving for him morphed into the Protest Movement in tiananmen square, and so the government was very aware of this, and so already had been cracking down on vpn, so that people could not access parts of the internet not controlled by the communist party, and they are trying to keep it while recognising how important it was, it might be too strong to say downplaying his role, but certainly a lot of people looking at the language being used by the party in terms of describing him, and it does seem to bejust trying to keep a lid on things in china. And now that he has gone, it is kind of a green light for people online here to discuss li keqiang and what he stood for, and of course comparisons will be made to xi jinping, because at one point they were both vying for power, and The Big Question is what would this country have been like if li keqiang had been made to the general secretary of the communist Party Instead of xijinping. And i think most people would think that it would be very different to the way things are now. Would be very different to the way things are now. Theres been much talk in the uk about the ban on xl bully dogs, but another Breed The Pitbull has already been banned in the uk for more than 30 years. New Research Shows that thousands of pitbulls are still registered to live here, through exemption rules. 0ur Correspondent danny savage has this report. This an Xl Bully Type Dog with a temperament problem. This animal was handed to police after it attacked its owner. It can never be rehomed and will be put down. This is currently a perfectly legal dog type, but the government is planning to ban them soon following a number of attacks and fatalities. Im a dog lover. I dont want to see dogs put down, but im also a dad. And ive got to think about public safety, you know . And is it right that a dog that has done that to someone, who is strong themselves, physically capable, is it right that that dog is then rehomed . Come on then. This much better behaved dog is actually a banned type. It can live with its owner but has to comply with strict rules, like wearing a muzzle in public. Whats this is it a muzzle . Lola is defined by the authorities as a pit bull type dog. Are you ready . Her owner was unaware she fell into a banned category and had to go to court after Police Seized her. Shejumped up in the back of the van. They locked her in a cage, shut the door and drove off, leaving me sobbing in the road. And i didnt know whether i was ever going to see her again. Shes got to be on lead in every public place and muzzled, which includes our own car. She doesnt believe Banning A Type solves the problem of controlling dangerous dogs. Banning a breed to start with makes them more attractive to the wrong owner. And its these people that the government should be targeting, not innocent family dogs that have been well brought up, trained from loving families. There willjust be another breed of dog that theyre attracted to. The bbc has found that 3,499 animals are on the index of exempted dogs, meaning they can still live with their owners, and 99 of them are pit bulls like lola. Good girl. This is usually because owners have successfully argued they are responsible and can keep their dogs safely. Whats this . Its the police, who assess a dog to see if it falls into a banned category. So were going here. Were looking about. Looks and measurements are basically what it boils down to. So weve got quite a square dog. This is a pit bull. Also here is another xl bully. No one knows how many are out there. Give us a bit of room because shes a bit uncomfortable, arent you, darling . But many of them could be allowed to still live with their owners if they are banned. We will look at the Home Environment that dogs are kept in. We will speak to the dog owner. Well obviously look at research into them and whether theyre a fit and proper person. So, if that dog is exempted, you know, that person will apply the sort of restrictions thats been put upon it. Hey good boy. Some owners are taking the initiative and getting their xl bullys ready to be assessed, like zuma here. Hes a dead playful dog. Loves people and loves other dogs. He loves to play. Hes a family pet, who the owners completely trust with their children. Just sprinkle a few and itll take him a while to find it. So his owners are paying for professional dog training in case of future restrictions. They hope to be able to legally keep him, having already noticed other peoples reactions. People are a bit more wary about him now. The dont want their dogs to come close to him, they dont want their children close to him. They even dont want their self close to him. If hes ever off the lead, theyll start walking the opposite direction. Hes a good boy. And id be really sad if he was ever taken away or anything like that. It would be awful really. Good lad. A ban doesnt necessarily mean these dogs will disappear, but it should clamp down on irresponsible owners. Danny savage, bbc news. Hello. British summertime comes to an end as the clocks go back. And we are seeing things very autumnal, unsettled and changeable over the next few days. Some heavy downpours of rain for many of us, and blustery wind at times too. Low pressure is anchored to the west of us at the moment, so low Pressure Systems and showers rotating around the low pressure and driving it in and this area of low pressure could be a troublemaker from saturday into sunday but lets look at the rainfall accumulating in the next few days and its Eastern Scotland that will see the heaviest rain, perhaps a hundred millimetres by the end of saturday, falling on saturated ground so the potential for furtherflooding problems. Today we have the ring sitting across Eastern Scotland, windy and the north east and elsewhere some sunshine, particular further south west at a scattering of showers moving through on the south west breeze and temperatures between ten and 16 for most of us and a bit cooler across the far north of scotland in the clear air. Through the evening and overnight we keep cloud and outbreaks of rain for North East England and scotland, and further south, clear spells and mist and fog patches or central areas but heavy showers around central areas and in the irish sea coast and Northern Ireland as well. It will not be cold and frost date but it could be a murky start to saturday morning. Mist and fog clear away from central uk and we have more Cloud And Rain For Southern Scotland and North East England and a few showers elsewhere but more persistent heavy rain moves in from the south late in the day. Some thunderstorms and heavy rain could cause localised flooding across Southern England on saturday night. Dont forget the clocks go back by one hour in the early hours of Sunday Morning so 2am becomes 1am. Through sunday the area of low pressure drifts north but we have the tail end of the front which will sit across Eastern Scotland where we could really do without even more rainfall accumulating so we could see further flooding problems on sunday and further south, sunshine but around parts of Southern England and into wales where we could see the bulk of the heavy, thundery downpours and blustery winds around as well. Some sunshine for the likes of Eastern England and temperatures in the mid teens, but its notjust unsettled to the end of october but the start of november as well and plenty more showers in the forecast. Goodbye for now. Live from jerusalem this is bbc news. The head of the un agency for Palestinian Refugees says the last remaining services it is providing in gaza are collapsing. Israel carries out more air and ground attacks in gaza overnight, hitting dozens of hamas targets. The Israeli Military says it has killed a senior hamas commander who helped plan the attacks on 7th october. Do you love her .
