A manhunt for this army reservist, after a Mass Shooting in the United States thats left 18 people dead. Crispin blunt, a Conservative Mp and former minister, is arrested on suspicion of rape and possession of controlled substances. And the so called King Of Crypto testifies before a judge in new york, where hes accused of stealing billions of dollars from customers. 0n newsnight at10 30. Another day of death and misery in gaza, and no Fuel Delivery in sight. And another day of torment for the hostages and their families. Can anyone see a way forward . Good evening from jerusalem, after the israeli army carried out its biggest incursion so far into gaza last night. It was not the start of a land invasion. Instead, israel said it was preparation for the next stages of combat against hamas designated as a Terrorist Organisation by the uk government. It killed 1,400 people in attacks in israel earlier this month. Hamas has said that almost 50 of the hostages it took when it launched the attacks have been killed during the israeli air strikes on gaza, although there is no independent verification of this claim. Meanwhile, the United Nations has been holding an Emergency Session to discuss the crisis. More on that in a moment, but first heres our international editorjeremy bowen, who has been talking to civilians and soldiers in communities near the gaza strip. For hours, we could hear the explosions around ten kilometres away in israel. It was the biggest israeli raid into the gaza strip so far in this war. The army released this video, it said of the battlefield being prepared, presumably for the invasion of gaza that the government says is coming. The soldiers pulled back into israel sometime before dawn. In khan younis in southern gaza, more raids and death in a place where israel told palestinians to go to be safe. We want to live beautiful lives, said this girl, not have rockets hitting our heads. The building fell on our heads. The un says nowhere is safe in gaza and the siege violates the laws of war. Israel has killed thousands of palestinian civilians. Just a few miles away in israel, Sally Partrush lives in one of the Communities Hamas attacked. This is me, this is one of my friends, gil, and he was murdered. Im all the time thinking how they. What they did to them, how they suffered. With so much loss, whole families, she is furious that israels response has been questioned. This time we realise that, after that, its us or them. If it is, as you say, us or them, is it ok to ignore International Humanitarian law . Im tired of it, of what the law, the International Law said. The International Law didnt prevent these murders, these brutal murders. Where was the world . People were happy about it. Along the gaza border, civilian volunteers are bringing home comforts to the troops. The soldiers commanders say theyre ready and that its a waiting game until the War Cabinet Orders them into gaza. The men i spoke to are certain that israels actions since hamas attacked were legal, morallyjustified and vital for the security of their families. Most of the soldiers here were reservists, called out of civilian life. You said youre a social worker. Yes. You must deal with people with trauma. How long will it take israelis to process this national trauma, if ever . Generations. I think something is broken here. We want to protect. We dont want to fight. We dont want to kill. But if we need to do it, so here we are, here we are. Do you want to side with people like you . We do you want to side with people like you . We are the same, we have the same you . We are the same, we have the same values you . We are the same, we have the same values of freedom, womens rights. Same values of freedom, womens rights, lgbtq writes. Ahead is complex urban warfare. When might depend on the Success Orfailure of talks to free the hostages. Israelis get behind their soldiers, especially at times like this. Almost everybody has been in the military or has a son or a daughter in uniform. Its a different thing when it comes to politicians. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu makes carefully choreographed appearances, but he avoids his Many Political enemies who say he left israel vulnerable to hamas. Israelis, though, are united in their fight against hamas, but their country faces big challenges, and their leader is under crushing pressure. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, in southern israel. Today, hamas held a Rare Press Conference in beirut, in lebanon, after which a spokesman told the bbc that the groups attack on israel on seventh of october, which killed 1,400 people, was aimed to be a Military Operation and he denied it was intended to target civilians. Israel says more than 200 others, including women and children, are being held hostage in gaza. He was talking to our middle east correspondent hugo bachega. There was no command, no command to kill any civilians. You say this was a Military Operation, but the result of it was that hundreds of civilians were killed. Because that area is very wide and there are many people there and there was clashes and confrontations. Its not confrontation. You invaded houses. I dont have the details of what happened inside, but i can tell you that we didnt have any intention or decision to kill the civilians. You say you were not targeting civilians. Yes. And you now have more than 200 hostages, many of them civilians. Why dont you then just release those civilians . We are ready to deal positively with the point of these hostages. We are not planning from the first moment to have the hostages, or as you said the civilians. I think that its a Military Operation, its a Military Operation. But how does it advance the palestinian cause . I dont accept it from you that we just kill the civilians in order to. Weve seen the evidence, weve seen the pictures. This is a shame for you to do that. It is not a question, it is a shame for you to do that. We are fighting for dignity and for freedoms, for freedom. By killing people in their homes, by invading a Music Festival and Killing Hundreds of people . We are fighting against occupation. Israel as a country, as a state, they provide and supply the occupation. Israel is a state of brutality, of massacres. How do you justify killing people as they sleep, you know, families . How do you justify Killing Hundreds of people in. . I want to stop this interview. A rather abrupt ending to that interview with the hamas spokesman. Well, eu leaders have tonight called for pauses in the fighting between israel and hamas to allow aid into gaza. And in new york, theres been an Emergency Session at the Un General Assembly to discuss the crisis. 0ur correspondent nada tawfik is there. What has been said . Well, reeta, more than 100 what has been said . Well, reeta, more than 100 countries what has been said . Well, reeta, more than 100 countries are what has been said . Well, reeta, more than 100 countries are yet. What has been said . Well, reeta, | more than 100 countries are yet to speak, but weve been hearing already from arab delegations and israel on their views on this resolution which has largely humanitarian, calling for a ceasefire, calling for Unhindered Aid Access and the protection of civilians. We first heard from the palestinian ambassador, who asks why there wasnt more urgency to act to stop the killing in gaza, and the Jordanian Foreign minister who spoke on behalf of 22 arab nations, saying the collective punishment was not self defence, that it was a war crime, and he echoed many of the palestinian ambassador s comments, saying that israel had made gaza a perpetual hell on earth. We had from israel because my ambassador to the un who said a Resolution Calling for a ceasefire was not calling for peace. It was time israels hands from eliminating a threat to its citizens. So sharp accusations flying back and forth, reeta. A un diplomat has told the bbc that unless there is a direct condemnation of hamas in this draft that us, some european nations and canada will find it difficult to support, but it will likely pass with a large majority of the General Assembly, which has a very different Power Balance than the security council, and where no countries hold a veto. And that, reeta, is going to come in the next few days. That will certainly send a signal about the weight of world opinion. But whether it has any impact on the ground is something entirely different. Those resolutions in the General Assembly are not legally binding and therefore unlikely to make israel change course. Therefore unlikely to make israel change course. 0k, thank you for that, change course. 0k, thank you for that. Made change course. 0k, thank you for that. Made at change course. 0k, thank you for that, made at 0rphic change course. 0k, thank you for that, made at orphic there. I change course. 0k, thank you for. That, made at orphic there. Ned that, made at 0rphic there. Ned at 0rphic there. Neda tawfik. The Hamas Run Health Ministry says more than 7,000 people have now been killed since israeli air strikes on gaza began and its issued a document of more than 200 pages which it says contains the names of all those whove died. This after President Biden cast doubt over the casualty figures. The un said tonight that aid is barely trickling into gaza, and says civilians must have the essentials to survive. Its a time of huge tension and anxiety for those living in the other palestinian run territory the west bank. Our special correspondent fergal keane has been to talk to one family there, who have relatives in gaza. A loss beyond consolation. Mohammed mourns his wife and daughter. To survive is still to bear the trauma of all that cannot be unremembered. To live and to have to carry your sons body. And to place him in the earth because no medical help was available. Under the relentless air strikes, civilians endure a claustrophobic nightmare. Screaming and shouting. These scenes were recorded in khan younis, in the south of the gaza strip. People were ordered to evacuate south by israeli forces, but found they were still unprotected. There are massacres day and night, says this man. Children, young people, babies, everyone is being killed. Israel says hamas bears responsibility for hiding in and launching attacks from civilian areas and has vowed to destroy the group. But in the process, many innocent civilians are suffering, and their loved ones outside wait anxiously for news. Carmel and her mother live just 80 kilometres from gaza, in the west bank, but its as if her 93 year old grandmother was a world away, in gaza. Translation shes very sick, she has severe depression. How will they be able to get her out of the house when its being bombed . You obviously love her very much. In english yes, i do. With the endlessly grim images coming from gaza, theres hunger for contact with those inside. That moment in every day when a phone call is the familys slender link. Is everyone good, is Everything 0k . , she asks. The cousin at the other end says, we are safe, but the night was terrifying. The un said today there was nowhere safe in gaza not for the young, not for the old. Fergal keane, bbc news, ramallah. The suffering of palestinians is matched by the trauma suffered by israelis when hamas attacked it and while the shock has largely bound Israeli Society together, there has been a constant protest outside the Ministry Of Defence in tel aviv. Some are angry with the government response in gaza, others about the hostages being held by hamas. The families of those hostages are having to endure an agony day after day. And i should tell you, the video and photo we are about to show is with the permission of the family concerned. Car horn toots. Sounding their support for the protesters who, day after day, display the faces of the abducted. Some elderly, some very young. We went in search of the family of one of them. 0mer wenkert s whole neighbourhood wants him back. He went to the supernova Music Festival on october 7th, where hamas killed at least 260 people. This is 0mer s bedroom. That was the last time his parents shai and niva saw him. All the clothes are waiting. When the attack took place, they didnt know he was there. Its alljust as he left it, isnt it . Yeah. He texted them to say he was safe and then. I think a half hour later, he was hearing a gun shooting, and he told his mother, mum, im frightened. So this is horrible to hear, this is unimaginable. Shai jumped into the car to go and fetch him, but then he got a phone call from a friend. He told me, shai, you need to come home. I told him, what happened . 0mer is alive, i have a video, hes probably kidnapped. Shouting. What did it do to you to see that photograph and that video of 0mer, only in his underwear, hands tied behind his back . As a father, its terrifying, what they are doing to my son. The pain is written on your face. Yeah, im sorry, but its unbelievable, and its unspeakable. Its very difficult, very hard for us. Why . why they took my son . He goes to a party, to have fun and dance. People from All Over The World will be in this fest, to make peace, to love each other. 0mer s grandmother lived through the holocaust. She says shes now reliving a similar terror. Translation at this age, to go through another time of such pain. Hes my first grandson, hes a very good boy, hes working, hes a joyful person, and he has a good heart. Its. Its hard for me. Im talking from pain. We believe he is alive, i know hes alive, i feel him. I want my son back home. This is a nightmare. A nightmare but the hope that he is alive keeps them going. Thats it from me and the team here injerusalem. Now its back to you, ben, in the studio. Thank you very much, reeta. Several towns in the North Western state of maine are in lockdown tonight, as Police Search for robert card, an army reservist, with known Mental Health issues. They say hes Armed And Dangerous. The shooting happened in a bar and Bowling Alley in the city of lewiston, and our Correspondentjohn Sudworth is there for us tonight. John. You can see the ranks of media crews behind me. There is intense focus on the state of maine this evening, as the state of maine this evening, as the Police Continue to scour vast swathes of countryside in search of a suspect who is Armed And Dangerous and very much still at large. There have been attempts here to enact meaningful gun control but most have endedin meaningful gun control but most have ended in failure and it is a failure that now looms large over this tragedy, with questions being asked about whether, had the authorities had more power they may have been able to act on what was seen to be clear warning signs. Roads are empty, doors bolted shut. With the urgent manhunt still under way, the shelter in place warning now covers a wide area. The shooting began around 7 00 on wednesday evening, first at a Bowling Alley, then a bar, as once again ordinary, Everyday America is torn apart by a Mass Shooting. Just a normal night of bowling and out of nowhere, he just came in and there was a loud pop. Ijust went down the lane and i slid basically into where the pins are and climbed up in the machine and was on top of the machine for about ten minutes until the cops got there. Hundreds of officers, including weapons and explosive experts, are involved in the search. The police have released these images of the suspect, ao year old Us Army Reservist robert card, holding what appears to be a semiautomatic rifle. He should be considered Armed And Dangerous. Based on our investigation, we believe this is someone that should not be approached. Maine is a largely rural state and a place once seen as relatively unscathed by the scourge of gun violence. That sense of security has now been shattered. This city did not deserve this l terrible assault on its citizens, on its peace of mind, i on its sense of security. No city does, no state, no people. No words can truly or fully measure the grief of many people today. This shooting will once again put americas gun control laws in the spotlight. The man the police are looking for is reported to have a history of Mental Health issues and of threatening to carry out a shooting. President biden has ordered flags to be flown at half mast in honour of the victims, while once again urging his republican opponents to help ban assault weapons. Amid the grief, us politics seems stuck on repeat. John sudworth, bbc news, maine. Its a safe and easy way to get into crypto. Uh. | dont think so. And calling for greater oversight of the unregulated crypto industry. He founded two companies a Crypto Exchange called ftx, that customers use to convert conventional currencies into cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin, and to store and trade their funds, and alameda research, an Investment Fund. Both saw a swift rise with ftx becoming the second largest Crypto Exchange in the world. But then, a stunning fall, when ftx and alameda collapsed and filed for bankruptcy nearly a year ago. Customers lost billions of dollars. Mr bankman fried was arrested in the bahamas and extradited to the us. Sam has always had a high risk tolerance, so if there were a defendant to take the stand in his own defence, sam bankman fried is, you know, high on that list. Given whats at stake, appearing on the Witness Stand maybe mr Bankman Frieds biggest gamble yet. Sam Bankman Frieds testimony had an unconventional start. The judge sent thejury home. He said unconventional start. The judge sent the jury home. He said there were topic areas the defence wanted to introduce that the prosecution rejected two and his solution was to hear it for his is only and then decide to stop the proceedings focused on what Company Policies or advice from lawyers made mr bankman fried i think his companies actions are legal, including alamedas use of ftx funds. The judge told the jury to come back tomorrow morning and said they may decide the case in the first half of next week. Thank you very much. In bengaluru, formerly known as bangalore, england, formerly known as world beaters, reached another low. They still have four games left to play but after a fourth defeat in india, they know theyre now making up the numbers. It certainly looks that way. We need a few miracles, wed have to win every game and things go our way to progress further in this tournament. But for the games that we have left, we want to play the cricket we know we can play. They only showed that in flashes against sri lanka thats one for the cameras from dawid malan. But so was this, beaten by Angelo Mathews was that a nick . A closer look showed there was. First one down. The dominoes were falling. No review needed for this, despitejoe root s desperate dive. Its worth pointing out that england had chosen to bat first. India and australia are next in line for england there could be more pain before the relief of the plane that brings them home. 0lly foster, bbc news. Time for a look at the weather. Heres stav. Low pressure hasnt finished with us yet, it will stay unsettled for the rest of this month and even as we head into november, it could bring further showers and spells of rain. Unsettled for the rest of this week. Some of the heaviest of the rain will be in Eastern Scotland, where it is its persistent nature that could cause flooding. Low pressure anchored to the west and that will be sticking around for these next few days, bringing bands of showers, longer spells of rain. It will stay quite wet through the overnight period across Eastern Scotland. Elsewhere, clear spells and showers, lighter winds in the midlands, Eastern Parts of england, lincolnshire. Some dense fog patches are formed and they will be hanging around tomorrow morning so just be aware of that if you are heading out there is a thing, certainly for lincolnshire and eastern england.
