Thanks, were starting with a busy night of european football. In the Europa League west ham were beaten by Greek Superleague leaders olympiakos 2 1. Brighton and liverpool have just kicked off their home games. Brighton v ajax is goalless and liverpool are drawing 1 1 with toulouse. Sparta prague v rangers finished goalless and bundasliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen are leading qarabag 2 1. In the europa conference league, aston villa stormed to a 4 1 victory over az alkmar to top group e, and after becoming the first team in Faroe Islands history to get a point in a major European Competition klaksviks now have their first win beating Olimpija Ljubljana 3 0 tonight. The newcastle and italy midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned for ten months by the Italian Federation for breaching betting rules. Tonali moved to the Premier League from ac milan this summer for £55 million. Hes the Second Player to be sanctioned following the investigation. It means he wont be able to feature at euro 2024 next summer should italy qualify. On to the Cricket World Cup where it looks like the defending champions england will make an early exit. They were heavily beaten by sri lanka tody, their fourth defeat so far. Batting first, england were 45 without loss before dawid malan began a miserable slide which included joe root running himself out forjust three, as england were in disarry. Even ben stokes couldnt save them, managing 43 as england were all out forjust 156 with more than 16 of their 50 overs left to play. So it was no surprise when sri lanka eased to victory by eight wickets. England are now second from bottom in the table and must win all their remaining games, including against unbeaten hosts india and hope an unlikely set of other results go their way to reach the knock out stages. Its never for a lack of effort, its never for a lack of hard work or preparation. Look around the room, it is not a lack of talent. A lot of experienced guys who are fantastic cricketers, so absolutely, it is a huge frustration. This tournaments gone nowhere near the way we wanted it to. That has been a huge disappointment. So after such high hopes coming into the tournament, what has gone wrong for the reigning one day and T20 World Cup champions . Heres the former england assistant coach paul farbrace. It is not through lack of effort or experience or no but confidence plays a huge part in sport at this level and unfortunately the first defeat against new zealand was such a heavy defeat, played well in the bangladesh game but lost two games to south africa and afghanistan, two poor defeats, sometimes at this level in sport when you lose an early wicket it can erode the confidence and i thoughtjoe root would comment, everyone else probably thought it, calm things down, settle things down, he got run out. From that moment on everything unravelled very quickly. Confidence, it looked like it seeped away from the team and i think the previous defeats have really hurt this team badly. Onto rugby union and england have accused the sports world governing body of denying tom curry a fair hearing after a player he accused of making a racial slur agaist him was cleared to play in saturdays world cup final. Curry had alleged south africas bongi mbon ambi made the comment in their Semifinal Match in paris last weekend and that it had also bongi mbonambi. In their Semifinal Match in paris last weekend and that it had also happened in a previous match between the two sides. The allegation was investigated by world rugby who concluded there was insufficient evidence, therefore allowing him to take part in the final between south africa and new zealand. Tom curry s done nothing wrong. Lets be clear on that. So we have a victim of a situation who has not been able to have his voice heard, that, by world rugbys decision, theyve denied the opportunity for the victim of the situation, tom curry to have his voice heard. Thats where the disappointment really comes. Liverpool are up 3 1 now. After two days of heated debate in the un Security Council, today the wider General Assembly has been meeting to discuss the israel gaza war. 112 nations and bodies will be speaking over the course of the special emergency session. Earlier, both the israeli and Palestinian Ambassadors made speeches in which they described what their people have been through in almost three weeks of war. Heres some of what israels representative said in his address. Just as was done with isis, hamas must be no more. Our goal is to completely eradicate hamas capability, and we will use every minute at our disposal to accomplish this. Not for revenge, no. Not for retaliation, no. But to ensure that such depravity, such atrocities, never occurs again. In his address the Palestinian Ambassador to the un called on his colleagues to, in his words, choose justice, not vengeance. Let me address all those who have, in the past few days, explained why one should not call for a ceasefire. How can a representatives of states explain how horrible it is that 1000 israelis were killed, and not feel the same outrage when 1000 palestinians are now killed every day . Lets cross live to new york and speak to our correspondent at the un nada tawfik. Lots of countries lining up to speak, what is the latest . Well, the secial speak, what is the latest . Well, the Special Session speak, what is the latest . Well, the Special Session has speak, what is the latest . Well, the Special Session has been speak, what is the latest . Well, the Special Session has been suspended j Special Session has been suspended until tomorrow when speeches will resume, debating a Resolution Put forward byjordan on behalf of the arrow Group Calling for an immediate ceasefire, we have nations outlining their positions, we have heard from jordans Foreign Minister saying israel was not above International Law, that they had to act within it. We have heard from luxembourg saying there should be humanitarian pauses to begin with and again saying israel has a right to defend itself but has to work within the framework of International Law and to not be guided by rage. Certainly a much larger representation in the General Assembly that the Security Council. I have to say as calls of grown louder and louder promises power from un officials we are hearing the large majority of the General Assembly feels the same way. We will continue to hear the speeches but in a vote tomorrow i think it is very likely we will see a large call for a ceasefire. Whether that really has any impact on the ground is a different story. It is important to remember General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, theyjust resolutions are not legally binding, they just carry the resolutions are not legally binding, theyjust carry the weight of resolutions are not legally binding, they just carry the weight of world opinion. We they just carry the weight of world oinion. ~. ~ they just carry the weight of world oinion. ~. , ~. , opinion. We were talking 24 hours auo when opinion. We were talking 24 hours ago when the opinion. We were talking 24 hours ago when the security opinion. We were talking 24 hours ago when the Security Council opinion. We were talking 24 hours ago when the Security Council wasj ago when the Security Council was meeting, two different proposals, one by the us, won by russia. There was that, no agreement. How differing is the view in the un . Are you seeing the General Assembly leaning towards all agreeing on something . Leaning towards all agreeing on somethinu . , ,. ,. , something . Very different dynamics in the un general something . Very different dynamics in the un generalassembly, something . Very different dynamics in the un generalassembly, you i something . Very different dynamics l in the un generalassembly, you have in the un General Assembly, you have had arab, african, Latin American nations, a large number of the global south coming out and supporting a ceasefire, really joining the uns calls to put an end to the violence and two more long term get most sides to recommit to a political process. While many do say privately it looks like the two State Solution is hanging by a thread, that is the very much what we are hearing in speeches in the un, they need to get back to a two State Solution because there is no alternative. As we have already seen in the Security Council, the geopolitical divides are making it increasingly difficult to get some Real Progress on the ground. While we are likely to hear calls in the General Assembly, we are likely to hear calls in the generalassembly, i we are likely to hear calls in the General Assembly, i think divisions are still going to make it very difficult to see where this goes. Nada tawfik at the un, thanks as always for bringing us up to date. As diplomatic efforts to de escalate the ongoing situation in the middle east continue, eu leaders have been meeting in brussels for a two day summit. But, as they come together to find a way forward there are differences between the members states. Spain, portugaland ireland have expressed support for the palestinian cause and are calling for a ceasefire. But other countries including germany, austria and hungary have a more pro israel stance, and are opposed to a ceasefire. So agreeing the exact wording on Anyjoint Statement was exepcted to be complicated. But in the last few minutes, we have had word of a statement. With the eu summit agreeing to call for humanitarian corridors and pauses. Joining me now from brussels is Suzanne Lynch politico europes Chief Brussels correspondent. Just as we were introducing that we got news of some agreement from the eu nations, tell us more about that. It is just happening here eu nations, tell us more about that. It isjust happening here beside me at the eu headquarters, the European Council headquarters in brussels, e Youth Leaders have been locked in a room and have a language in the last few minutes in the middle east, it has come down to controversy over words we have language around humanitarian pauses. Some country wanted the word pause but countries like germany and austria, with a more pro israel stance, they were worried, they thought that might be close to a ceasefire, more of a permanent idea. The idea of humanitarian pauses might suggest a day you can pause activity to let aid etc in and out. It looks like they have come to the compromise this evening. They are meeting right through until tomorrow. This is the most contentious issue tonight and as we just heard it looks like they have agreement on that. As we just heard it looks like they have agreement on that. There has been contention, have agreement on that. There has been contention, hasnt have agreement on that. There has been contention, hasnt there, have agreement on that. There has i been contention, hasnt there, some 800 eu staff and diplomats criticising the approach to the conflict. ,. ,. , conflict. You have to bait within the eu about conflict. You have to bait within the eu about the conflict. You have to bait within the eu about the israel conflict. You have to bait within the eu about the israel how l conflict. You have to bait within the eu about the israel how mass the eu about the israel how mass first my war. First was criticised, not enough emphasis on the humanitarian aspects, she has been on the back foot since then. This is the First Time Since the 27th eu leaders are setting a random person discussing this with it was important they get some kind of a united front on this because the eu has been divided, there have been mixed messages coming from within eu leadership and Member States. We expect leaders will have been briefed by some of their colleagues who have been to israel in recent days, french president micron, the chancellor of austria, these are the kinds of discussions they leaders have been having in the past few hours. Macron. We have seen visits, notjust israel but also meeting the egypt president for example. How crucial are these countries in terms of de escalating this ongoing crisis . The eu has limited power in Foreign Policy, not a huge Foreign Policy player but it does have weight, what it says. Just like the un. It is a huge terror of palestinian aid for example so it matters in that sense. The outreach earth countries, that has divided people here. Ursula von der leyen didnt reach out to arab leaders. Whereas the person in charge of eu Member States did attend the cairo summit. Everyone is calling for de escalation. The key issue now again is the issue of a ceasefire. Germany, austria, Czech Republic are against that. The spanish leader, the irish taoiseach calling for a ceasefire. Divisions are running deeper about the perspective on what is happening at the moment. The fact that it came down to the wire my discussions about the tiny nuances of language, showsjust discussions about the tiny nuances of language, shows just how sensitive this issue is for the eu. Here in the uk, its emerged that Surrey Police have arrested the conservative mp Crispin Blunt on suspicion of rape, and possession of controlled substances. Hes also been suspended by the party. Lets get more on this from our Political Correspondent nick eardley. The first we heard about this was in a couple of reports in the sun and the guardian this afternoon, the mp who had been arrested was not named at that time but Crispin Blunt treated himself to say it was him, he had spoken to police twice now about this incident, the first meeting he says that he brought up concerns he had over extortion. He has also said he is confident he wont be charged. We know from the conservative Party Tonight that Crispin Blunt has had the whip removed but he will still remain an mp, but wont sit with the conservative party any more. He has also been asked to stay away from while this investigation is going. It is worth just pointing out that the conservative party has set a number of allegations of a similar nature over the past few months. Yes, they are different, they are not all the exact same but there is an mp called peter bone suspended from parliament this week for six weeks for bullying and Sexual Misconduct as was found by a parliamentary inquiry. He denies all the wrongdoing but has been suspended from parliament is possibly facing a by election in his seat. Another conservative mp remains on bail after being arrested for a number of things including rape. It has been a bit of an issue with this over the past four years in parliament. With Crispin Blunt himself, he has been arrested, he is on bail, he says this is confident he is confident this will not lead to charges. When the taliban took charge of afghanistan in 2021, the fate of thousands of afghans who worked for the British Government was uncertain. Thousands were given a place on the uks relocation schemes and asked to travel to neighbouring pakistan to have their visas processed. Many who thought they would be there for just a few weeks have now been stuck for months. Court documents showed many faced longer waits in part due to instructions by Rishi Sunak Banning them from being accommodated in hotels, in all but extreme cases. But this Afternoon A Charter Flight bringing Afghan Refugees left islamabad bound for the uk. This, after pakistans government began an immigration crackdown. To explain this in more detail, heres our pakistan correspondent caroline davies. There are over 3,000 afghans on these uk Relocation Programmes currently waiting in pakistan. That includes people who were translators for the british army, people who were teachers for the British Council and theirfamilies. People who worked with or for the uk government in afghanistan. Now many came over to pakistan because they were told they were eligible for these uk visas and that theyd be able to have them processed in this country. Now some thought that this would just be a matter of weeks and instead theyve ended up waiting for months, living in hotels paid for by the uk government. But here they are not able to legally work and they are not able legally to be able to send their children to school. The backdrop to all of this as well is that a few weeks ago the Pakistan Government said that they intend to deport all Illegal Migrants from the 1st of november. Some that came over from afghanistan to pakistan to have their visas processed for the uk came over on short term pakistan visas that have since expired. Now, i spoke to the minister of the interior here in pakistan about these cases, and he said that even those individuals whose visas had expired would be able to have a facilitated exit from the country. But we do also know that the uk authorities here have done a Risk Assessment and that they consider that people who have got a visa that has expired to be of risk of deportation. Now we know that the flight that took off today was the first of 12 chartered flights that the uk government are running for the afghans on these Relocation Programmes. They will run from now until the mid and end of december. But at the moment, of course, there are 3000 people, many of which are waiting to find out whether they will be able to be on those flights and what will happen to them next. Rehana popal is a human rights barrister, working with former afghan interpreters for the British Military who are stuck in pakistan.
