News Opening Statements got under way in the trial of five men tied to the Extremist Group the proud boys. That includes long time leader Enrique Tarrio. The trial comes just weeks. After two leaders of another Extremist Group, the oath keepers, were convicted l of Seditious Conspiracy. Tarrio is perhaps the highest profile defendant to face jurors yet, in the attack. Tarrio had nothing to do with the events Ofjanuary 6th. He was not there. He was not present. He did not incite or orchestrate any attack on the capitol and i think the evidence is going to be clear. All we want is the truth to come out during this trial. Its obvious that the government has thrown all the resources possible prosecuting the people onjanuary 6th. Its an issue of finding a scapegoat for what transpired onjanuary 6th. Enrique tarrio to me is such an interesting character. You know, hes the national ringleaderfor the proud boys and he sits at the top of theirfood chain. He considers himself a propaganda minister, i think. And so i think as a leader of that group and he did have political aspirations for a while i think that he just likes to be the, you know, the front facing figure and the Smooth Talker and likes to represent what the proud boys are supposed to be. And. Yeah. I think he might be a charlatan, to be perfectly honest. For three years, Enrique Tarrio let our cameras follow him. They gave me this at the atlanta rally, and i dont know what you do with it because usually its like the finger and its like a stop sign. Like you. You know, with a finger, you know, like. Ijust dont understand that. Every time i do some type of interview with some media company, the first thing that they do is they ask the same questions. Why are you guys White Supremacists . Are you racist . Or, are you fascists . And like i have to first. Its like i spend the first couple of minutes in these interviews like, no, no, no, no. I denounce, denounce, denounce, denounce. When we were filming with Enrique Tarrio, he said that nothing was off limits. You can ask me anything, he told us. You got to try this. Its great. What is it . Ok, so its an empanada with guava and cheese. Oh, i heard of these. I never tried it. Its not so much as im antifascist, as im anti authoritarian. Fascism is an authoritarian ideology. So is communism. Enrique tarrio is an afro cuban who grew up in miami, and speaks spanish with his family. On paper, hes a very unlikely far right leader. Ive always been political. My family was executed at the order of che guevara. So, you know, from birth, i was very political. I was a trump supporter from day one. In 2012, he was thinking about running, and at that point i said, this guy is the guy thats going to win. And then he decided not to run at that point, which i thought was a great idea. He wouldnt have beat obama in 2012. Enrique tarrio is charming, but also elusive. As a journalist, he can be hard to pin down. He can be likeable one minute and say incredibly offensive things the next. But among his followers, he inspires devotion. You can just tell people that i have a special irish pool. Its green there would be some rally and he would be there and he was kind of a nobody at the time. He was a proud boy. And then i had friends that were good friends of his. Thats how we would be around each other. You know, there would be different events that he would, he would be there. He would be speaking. Hes just always been there. Im really protective of him because people dont know him. Hes not a white supremacist. Hes got a soft heart, and hes for the same things im for. Hes. Hes a conservative. Hes a rock star now. I knew him when he wasnt a rock star. Like, seriously, like. Im like. The proud boys started as an all male drinking club. I played on this table four times the night after i built it. And i just havent. I havent used it. The government and the media, theyre not after the proud boys. Were just in their way. Werejust in theirway because what scares them is our voices. Thats why they dont want us on facebook and twitter. Were wrongthink. Thats not allowed. How dare us go against the narrative . How dare us go against The Deep State . How dare us go against the democrats and their socialist agenda . Im going to see if i can swivel the hip. I full power. I like that. Yeah. The founder of the proud boys is gavin mcinnes. And where it really blows up is left wing cities like los angeles, chicago, i new york, because you cant talk patriotic stuff in these cities. I and it was a place where guys could notjust relax and be dudes and fart and not hold out chairs or anything, but it was a place where you could talk about trump. But as the trump years wore on, the proud boys became notorious for violent clashes with police and antifascist protesters. They were instantly recognisable in Black And Yellow Fred Perry Polo shirts, and they often wore tactical vests. They said they were fighting communism and that they were there to save america. There were proud boy chapters in almost every state in the us, and in time, a new leader emerged. Enrique tarrio. I think he was kind of nerdy. When he was younger and all of a sudden with proud | boys, he was the fonz. And i think he fell in love with the attention. Enrique loves to rally. He loves to get out there. While he leads a group that essentially is magnetised to violent situations, right, where i have filmed people who essentially directly report to him in these immense Street Fights with their adversaries, with media in some cases, enrique himself is always very smiling and bubbly with the cameras. Were in the midst of a fight, hell crack little jokes with the media. I am a proud boy. Im a proud boy. The first time i came to learn about who the proud boys were, were probably a little bit before donald trump mentioned them at the president ial debates in september 2020. Are you willing tonight to condemn White Supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down . Give me a name. White supremacists. Who would you like me to condemn . The proud boys . Stand back and stand by. Chanting donald trump before the debate stage mention, we had 22,000 proud boys worldwide, give or take. 12,000 of them residing here in the United States, the other ones residing abroad. And its not hard to see that our numbers have been doubled since then. After the president ial election in 2020, the proud boys started to protest across the country, supporting Donald Trumps baseless claim that the election was stolen. They set themselves up as an informal army for the former president. I cant tell you if the election was stolen or not. I cant. And thats a problem. Those people that think that the election are stolen. I understand them. Because the United States government has meddled in the elections of. Almost any country outside of. Here, look south america, israel, all over europe. So is it crazy to think that the United States government would meddle in its own elections . I think thats a question worth. Discussing, at least. But people dont want to discuss it. They just want to shut it down and say, no, the election is not stolen. Well, the proud boys were central because they had attracted growing numbers and they were ready and willing to fight. And they also had a fascist street fighting group. They were willing to take orders from the top and they were willing to watch the signals they were getting from those in power. On december 19th, in the early morning, maybe 1 42am, trump tweets this famous tweet about coming to an event on january 6th. Will be wild. Immediately, the proud boys respond. The next day, Enrique Tarrio creates a special chapter that he calls ministry of self defense. Its a very Secretive Group that is dedicated to planning for the january 6th rally. On january 11th 2021, Enrique Tarrio travelled by plane from miami to washington, dc, and flew straight into trouble. Off the top at ten, the leader of the far right group, the proud boys arrested in the district and hes l being held by police. Enrique tarrio is accused of burning a black lives matter banner stolen from an historic black church. I the next day, he was released. He was issued with a stay away order, banning him from washington, dc for the day of the capitol protest because of magazines for a gun that were found in his luggage when he was arrested. 0njanuary 5th, i picked enrique up and drove him to the Phoenix Hotel to pick up some other bags. And while we were there, we encountered the 0ath keepers, who are led by stewart rhodes. The 0ath keepers are a far right militia group. Enrique and stewart exchanged cordialities. After the meeting in the garage, we followed enrique, continued to follow enrique to baltimore. He said that he wanted to go to baltimore because he wanted to be close to his boys. Those events would be at the centre of Enrique Tarrios trial. But one element has baffled many observers. Why did Enrique Tarrio allow himself to get arrested . The proud boys were very aware of the Second Amendment laws in dc, and im sure that enrique would have known that those magazines would have precipitated a much more severe penalty than just burning the flag. Enrique was aware that he was going to be arrested. He was arrested with his magazines, which meant that he was going to be exiled from dc and thus was not on the battlefield when, um, um, january 6th happened. Enrique took himself off the battlefield, knowing what was going to happen onjanuary 6th. A Dc Police Officer has since been arrested and charged for tipping off Enrique Tarrio ahead of his arrest. 0n the morning Ofjanuary 6th 2021, thousands of Trump Supporters descended on washington, dc, as lawmakers in congress were preparing to confirm joe biden as the new president. Theres no doubt in my mind that Donald Trumps commanding objective was to overthrow the election, set aside the constitutional order, to claim power. Trump were going to walk down and ill be there with you. Were going to walk down to the capitol. As members of the proud boys were entering the capitol. Enrique tarrio was posting messages on an encrypted site from his hotel room in baltimore. Those Extremist Groups who were. Mobilised to be in his hemisphere all shared the goal of Seditious Conspiracy, of overthrowing the government as we knew it. Tarrio pleaded guilty to destruction of property and attempted possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device. He was sentenced to five months in a washington jail. Take care. Call me. As a Us House Committee investigating january 6th began hearings, authorities started to narrow in on the proud boys and other extreme groups. A very hateful word. But just weeks later, Enrique Tarrio was re arrested, this time for his role in the january 6th attack. I ended up in court because i was subpoenaed. As a journalist, its probably the last place in the world i wanted to be. Using footage shot by nick quested as evidence, the prosecution argued that tarrio planned and directed the attack on the capitol using encrypted social media platforms. Even though he was kind of away and afar from it, he didnt have to be in Dc Onjanuary 6 to be charged with Seditious Conspiracy because he was allegedly organising the conspiracy, regardless of where he was. The defence said that tarrio wasnt in dc and, therefore, couldnt have been involved in the insurrection in any way. Their argument was that the government was prosecuting tarrio because it was easier than going after the real culprit. With tarrio, his own Telegram Messages are the most damning. The message, make no mistake, we did this. He also tells everybody, proud of my boys. Im proud of yall. He seems happy with what happened. Thejudge is going to be taking the bench in five or ten minutes to have that verdict returned by the jury. Well, four proud boys leaders have been found guilty by a jury of Seditious Conspiracy in a major case that the Justice Department brought afterjanuary 6. Those include Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the proud boys, who was not in washington, Dc Onjanuary 6th, so that makes him very unique among many of the january 6th defendants. But the jury has found that the government proved that these men wanted to overthrow the Us Government or hinder it somehow by force. We respect the jurys verdict today, although we disagree with it, but we respect it and at this point in time, were currently drafting all the appellate paperwork to proceed forth. You know, im not sure it matters that much. L they got these convictions. Theyve effectively laid a blueprint for how to disrupt the american government. But the next time somebody wants to do this, somebodyl with a better plan, smarter, i more dedicated, they canjust follow the blueprint thats been set out now. I think that with all the january 6th cases, you know, unless former President Trump is called to account for this event, all of them become almost farcical. You know, everyone knows who caused that event. Everyone there was there for him. The rest of these people are pawns, even the even the important ones. The rainfall has been quite exceptional across the uk in the last few days widely in excess of 100mm of rain and in some spots around 200, the exact figures have yet to be verified but this is whats been happening in the last 48 hours. These rain clouds pushed in by a strong easterly wind, a Conveyor Belt of moisture, of very wet weather spreading northwards across the uk and, of course, among the worst places to be affected Eastern Scotland. Now, the outlook is looking very unsettled. Further spells of wind and rain on the way, as far as the week ahead is concerned. Now, the warnings have expired from scotland. The weather is improving, clear skies are developing but, of course, still a lot of flooding out there, high river levels its going to take a while before the water levels ease. But much of the uk actually pretty clear early on Sunday Morning and quite chilly with light winds. Temperatures of around 2 degrees in aberdeen, about that in newcastle, but i think for most of us, it will be in the range of, say, 5 8 degrees celsius. So, the troublesome low thats caused all of that mayhem to the north of scotland on the weather map for sunday. We are in between Weather Systems so, actually, its not looking bad at all from morning onwards, im pleased to say. Therell be a few showers around. Crucially, the Wind Direction is different, so no longer that lets call it wet easterly that we had. Its more of a gentle westerly and plenty of bright if not sunny skies on the way with temperatures of between, say, 10 and 15 or 16 degrees celsius in the south of the country. And then, sunday night into monday, the next area of low pressure sweeps in, this time from iberia, from portugal and spain, where also, we will have had very strong winds and heavy rain. I think the morning is looking fine across most of the uk. In fact, fine weather with light winds across Eastern Scotland, the north of england. But this Weather Front will sweep into the south and bring a wet afternoon to many southern parts of the country. Temperatures very similar around, say, 11 15 degrees celsius. And then, monday night into tuesday, that wet weather will spread once again northwards across the country. Not quite what weve had recently but its still an easterly wind, a strong wind up to gale force, still spreading In The Rain Clouds across Northern England and quite possibly into Eastern Scotland as well, so we certainly dont want any rainfall across this part of the world the ground is very saturated but it does look as though more rainfall is on the way, although not as extreme. And then, the forecast, the weather map for wednesday shows a large area of low pressure multiple areas of low pressure, in fact with Weather Fronts spiralling around this big parent low. This basically implies very unsettled weather in the days ahead and a risk of Gale Force Winds at times. It wont be raining all the time in fact, you can see on wednesday, actually, scotland and perhaps the north of england enjoying some drier weather there but in the south, its a case of wind and rain and, once again, that low pressure with us on thursday and sometimes, what you get is these deeper areas of low pressure that develop around the larger parent low and they sometimes give us very strong winds, so the outlook, you can see pretty much every single day weve got a rain or shower icon there, even the odd crack of thunder. Israels military says it is stepping up its airstrikes on gaza to put further pressure on hamas ahead of a possible major Ground Offensive. In the last hour or so, the Israeli Defense forces said one of their aircraft attacked a Mosque Injenin in the west bank. These are pictures we are just getting from the aftermath of the strike injenin. Israel said their intelligence revealed that the mosque was used by a hamas cell as a centre to plan and execute attacks against civilians. According to the reuters news agency, a local medic said that two people died in the incident, but the bbc has not verified this information. The strikes in the west bank come as the Israeli Military warns civilians in gaza to keep moving south for their own safety as it prepares to increase pressure on hamas militants there.
