He was one of those players that transcended the sport, | players that transcended the sport, that transcended football with all of those incredible achievements and records that we just heard andy swiss tell us about. His career built almost on the impossible when you consider what happened in 1958 when he survived that air crash, the munich air disaster. It was just two years prior to that in 1956 that he made his debut for Manchester United as an 18 year old. That is the club that he will forever be regarded as a legend of. In 2016, here he was when their stand was named after him in his honourfor those incredible numbers that we have heard. A total of 758 matches for Manchester United. It took until 2008 when ryan giggs beat that appearance record. Those 249 goals that he scored for united, their all time record goal scorer for united, their all time record goal scorerfor more united, their all time record goal scorer for more than 40 years until that record was surpassed by wayne rooney. That is what people will remember him for, those incredible goals in Manchester United colours but we shouldnt forget for england, too, forever etched in the memories of those that were watching, that 1966 world cup win. He played at the world cups as well, in 1962 and 1970, in between those successes. But we also think about the incredible work that he did afterwards, after his career. That charity work as well, in relation to dementia as well, we know His Brotherjack died in 2020, which is when sir bobby was also diagnosed with dementia. His other brother sadly passed away earlier this year from that particular disease. We know five of those england world cup winners in 1966 winning squad are diagnosed with dementia. In terms of Manchester United, because we have heard from his family and you read out that statement, i want to tell you what Manchester United have released in the last ten minutes or so with this news confirmed of sir bobbys dead. He says united are in mourning who they call one of the greatest and beloved players in the history of the club. They say he was a hero to millions, notjust in manchester or youd the United Kingdom but where football is played around the world and very much one of their own as they talk about in this statement a graduate of their Youth Academy. The Great Youth Academy at Manchester United, of course. But his records, those goals, those number of appearances that put him in the pantheon of greats, coupled with his success with england, his profile in the sport and the work he did thereafter will forever see him as one of the footballing greats of all time. You think about the work of sir Alex Ferguson did in the 90s in transforming Manchester United and those incredible players that came through under him. We shouldnt forget the years that sir Bobby Charlton spent as a director at old trafford, a club that was woven into his heart. Yes, there was a time where he accepted a post as a director with wigan. There was a period where he was manager of preston in the mid 705 and also playing for them for a while, but Manchester United was his club. When you think about uniteds domination more recently in the premier league, across the 90s, the early part of the 20005, he across the 905, the early part of the 20005, he was front and centre of sharing that joy with the the 20005, he was front and centre of Sharing Thatjoy with the united fan5, seeing them to return what when he was playing with the glory days. You think about Manchester United winning the european cup with him, multiple titles as well. It was not just with him, multiple titles as well. It was notjust with england his trophy success. But then there was that barren period where united were in the shadow of their great rivals liverpool. Sir alex brought that success through inspired a generation of players thereafter. You think about wayne rooney who was both the delighted to break that goal scoring record at united but also knowing that it was with a bit of a heavy heart that he was beating one of the greats of his country harry kane and wayne rooney then beating sir bobbys england goal scoring record of 49 goals and of course very happy to break that record but also understanding the Great Success that he had had in an england shirt and of course what sir bobby did and no england player in modern times is done, winning that World Cup Trophy. He may no longer be with us but he will have footballing immortality. Rip, sir bobby. We will be getting many more tributes coming in from the sporting world and beyond. Ijust wanted to talk in from the sporting world and beyond. I just wanted to talk to you a little bit about the munich air disaster as well. Many of our younger viewers wont really remember much of that, in terms of their historical significance that it had but it was a big moment for sir bobby because he survived to another of his team mates actually died. He another of his teammates actually died. ,. ,. , died. He did and i am not sure he alwa s died. He did and i am not sure he always felt died. He did and i am not sure he always felt entirely died. He did and i am not sure he always felt entirely comfortable l always felt entirely comfortable talking about what happened and the nature of that air disaster in which of course 44 passengers and crew were involved. 23 people, nine Manchester United players died as a result of their injuries from that crash. Charlton surviving with minor injuries, only with minor injuries, as he put it. He was rescued by his team mate harry gregg. We think about a young Bobby Charlton who made his debut at 18 years old, just two years prior to that, to survive that horror of that night and what happened with that munich air disaster and then to still be able to be part of their Manchester United team that was built up thereafter and to have that success both with club and country. But there is no doubt that what happened in munich underpinned his career in many ways, had a profound impact. He did talk in those moments where he did talk in those moments where he did give interviews about theirs, how it made him valued the days that followed and how he was committed to get the most out of his career thereafter. That he was one of the lucky ones that survived it. And boy, did he get the most out of his career his extraordinary achievement that catapulted him into the pantheons of greats that we think about in football and i am sure this evening, because Manchester United are playing tonight, it is a late kick off at sheffield united, we will hear much more from the united manager erik ten hag and tributes and here in the coming days and weeks at old trafford because this, as united says, is a time to pay respect to one of their greats, sir Bobby Charlton, who has died today at the age of 86. A statement from his family says its with Great Sadness we share the news that sir bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family. The family thanks people for their support and for the help of people gave to his care as sir bobby was diagnosed with Dementia Back in 2020. Now lets move on to our main story this hour and that is the first aid trucks have crossed into gaza after the Rafah Crossing from egypt partially opened this morning, throwing a lifeline to gazans. These pictures show the first trucks entering, loaded with food, water and medicine, which are desperately needed by civilians inside gaza. Israel agreed to let just 20 trucks through. The un says at least 100 aid trucks are needed a day to cover urgent needs there. There was disappointment that fuel has not been allowed in to power hospital generators. Israel sealed its borders with gaza imposing a total siege on the strip 12 days ago. The Rafah Crossing between egypt and gaza is now the only way to allow vital supplies in. 0ur reporter Rushdi Abualouf gave us the latest from the crossing. 20 trucks are carrying food, medicine, and we understand Operation Room for the Nasser Hospital in khan yunis. This convoy is the first 20 trucks that crossed from coming from the egyptian side to the palestinian side today. This is a window of hope for 2. 3 Million People who are stuck without food, medicine or essential water, all of the essential needs, stuck in gaza. Today, there is a little bit of hope that this corridor is open and functioning. Once the mechanism of distributing this food is in place, more trucks will come from this direction, from the egyptian side. We understand that 4,000 trucks full of food, medicine and some say a field hospital, are on the other side of the border. Israel wants to make sure that hamas is not involved in this. The bbc was told by a Senior Hamas Official today that hamas is aware of those trucks and they are happy with the mechanism that egypt is putting in place. And they will not involve in distributing or deciding who will get this aid, as long as they are going to the people who need. The palestinian side of the crossing is open and hamas is welcoming any aid in. So today is significant. Since two weeks, gaza was without food and medicine. Today is significant, we have seen a window of hope, a window of food and medicine for gaza. This is a drop in the ocean, but more to come if the mechanism in place, everybody is happy with. Rushdi abualouf who has been reporting for us from gaza. Israel has continued to bombard gaza, including the south, where it had told people to seek safety, ahead of an expected ground offensive. The Gaza Health Ministry says 4,385 people have now been killed since israel began its air strikes. 1,756 of the dead are children, 976 are women. More than 1,400 people were killed when hamas attacked southern israel two weeks ago. Israel says 307 of its soldiers have been killed since then. And its raised the number of Hostages Hamas took to 210, although an American Mother and daughter were released late on friday. 0ur middle East Correspondent tom bateman reports from jerusalem after a ten day wait, the lorries carrying desperately needed water, food and medicine finally began rolling into gaza this morning. A glimmer of hope delivered on the back of a lorry. 20 trucks have come in, thanks to the un, says this aid worker, among those who have been waiting on the border with egypt. The aid deal was brokered by the us. Egypt called for the israelis to stop bombing the crossing. Israel wanted guarantees the supplies couldnt be stolen by hamas. This is a start but aid groups say much more is needed. Medical needs in gaza are huge. So what we need is a sustained aid access. We have more supplies coming to egypt and, hopefully, we will be able to ship them because the more we wait, the more lives will be lost and situations are getting desperate in hospitals in gaza. Israels bombardment went on this morning, while palestinian rockets were fired from the strip. Gazas humanitarian crisis is deepening. Tahreer is sheltering with her six children in a school building. Translation there is not even 1 of a good, healthy and safe life for a child. There is no safety. If we dont die from war, we will die from epidemics and diseases. Meanwhile, the family of two american hostages released in Gaza Last Night spoke of theirjoy. Natalie and her Motherjudith Raanan were handed over to the red cross and received by the israeli army. They are the first captives to be freed. Their family said they were thinking of all the others. Singing. More than 200 people, including children and the elderly, are still being held hostage by hamas. Israel has said it will maintain its siege until they are freed. For their loved ones, last nights release may bring some hope, a faint light in the darkness of war. Tom bateman, bbc news, jerusalem. The Idf Spokesperson real admiral Daniel Hagari mentioned the Hostage Situation in a statement earlier today. Translation a notification was delivered to the families of 307 Fallen Soldiers and to the families of 210 hostages. He also updated the public on the evacuation, and the conditions for the transportation of humanitarian aid in the south. So far, as 700,000 residents from the northern gaza strip, the city of gaza and surroundings, moved southwards to wadi gaza, keep moving south beyond wadi gaza. Under the guidance of the political echelon, food, water and medicines were transported from egypt through the Rafah Crossing to the population in the southern part of the strip only. Fuel does not enter gaza. Live now to our correspondent paul adams injerusalem. A day of some hope where you are. The first trucks of aid crossing from egypt into gaza. Is the expectation now that more will follow . It expectation now that more will follow . ,. , follow . Id say it is the hope rather than follow . Id say it is the hope rather than the follow . Id say it is the hope rather than the expectation. J follow . Id say it is the hope rather than the expectation. Clearly this was a trial run. It was always designed to be that way. 20 trucks is, as Rushdi Abualouf noted in his report, just barely scratches the surface of what is needed at the moment when you bear in mind that you are talking about a population of 2. 3 Million People, half of whom have had to flee their homes in the past two weeks, with massive destruction of the civilian infrastructure and of peoples homes. A complete israeli blockade, allowing no water, no fuel, no food and no medical supplies in. So 20 trucks just. And no medical supplies in. So 20 trucksjust. Itsjust and no medical supplies in. So 20 trucks just. Its just almost nothing. But if the mechanisms work, as we heard, if this is seen to proceed smoothly, if it is clear that hamas, who have given undertakings not to interfere with this process keep their word, then the aid agencies are poised to send in much greater quantities. But the word that is being used by all of them as this has to be sustainable. We have to see not 20 trucks of day, hundreds of trucks a day going and if this desperate humanitarian situation is to be relieved or addressed at all. Some credit for this relieved or addressed at all. Some credit for this breakthrough relieved or addressed at all. Some credit for this breakthrough and for the crossing opening has been given to President Joe Biden and his recent visit to israel. There has been more diplomacy in the region with that summit in cairo. Is there any hope that that could move the dial in terms of De Escalation . I very much doubt it. This is a summit arranged i very much doubt it. This is a summitarranged in i very much doubt it. This is a summit arranged in haste, without any clear agenda, with a slightly motley array of international leaders, some from the arab world, some from europe and it has to be said, some notable absences. Clearly the israelis are not there but basically the americans are not, either. There is only one american representative there. I think this has been an opportunity for a number of arab leaders, including the king of arab leaders, including the king ofjordan and the president of egypt himself to voice their fears, their fears about a possible mass exodus of palestinians from the gaza strip. Something that president sisi absolutely does not want to see because he regards that as a highly destabilising or would be a highly destabilising or would be a highly destabilising event. King abdullah ofjordan saying that it is high time the International Community started to talk again about some kind of meaningful peace process. He says that the crisis we are in now is precisely because for decades this has been allowed to drift. I thought echoed also by the italian prime minister, who says they should be a moment for some kind of reconciliation. But this is talk, it doesnt in any way represent a plan. There isnt even, i understand, going to be any kind of final declaration as you would normally expect from an event like this. So i think it is really ultimately an opportunity for people to vent their feelings. Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest footballers of all time, who died at the age of 86. You are watching bbc news. Hello. Its still raining heavily and persistently across parts of the uk. So lets start with the Important Message and that red warning from the met office is still in force for parts of eastern scotland. It means danger to life. Its valid until 6 00 pm this evening, as is this much wider Amber Warning in eastern scotland. 100 millimetres of rain, further 100 millimetres of rain possible. In the north of scotland, this Amber Warning is valid until 10 00 pm today and you can see that rainfall here, heavy and persistent. And this has been the trouble over the last few days. Its this wind, this southeasterly Gale Force Wind thats been stuck across this part of the world. It keeps pushing in those rain clouds and dumping all of that rain in the same spot. To the south of that, its brighter, some sunny spells, but we have showers in the forecast for parts of east anglia and the south east where it will remain cloudy, damp, with heavy showers at times. So through the course of the evening and overnight, finally, that persistent rain clears to the north of scotland. The skies are clear. The winds will ease as well and the temperatures will drop. So were talking about a pretty chilly morning, quite a chilly start to sunday, three degrees in aberdeen, two in newcastle, around 5 to 9 degrees across the bulk of england and wales as well as northern ireland. So heres the weather map for sunday. That troublesome low with its persistent rain has finally shifted to the north. Itll be just to the north of scotland. Were actually in between Weather Systems on sunday. So a good deal of dry, bright weather. Im very pleased to report. In fact, the best of the weather will probably be around some of these eastern coasts. The wind will have changed direction as well, coming more out of the west, southwest. Temperatures around 12 degrees in the Lowlands Of Scotland will match that in belfast, liverpool, about 14 and around 15 or so in the southeast. And then into monday, were expecting another very rainy area of low pressure to sweep in from the south. Itll be with us into tuesday as well. And actually, there are many low pressures out in the atlantic ready to come our way. So, yes, a bit ofa break, ithink, tomorrow with some sunny spells. But overall, the Weather Pattern is looking distinctly wet and windy in the coming days. Bye bye. This is bbc news. The headlines.
