A second red Weather Warning for the North East Of Scotland from midnight tonight. Fiona lamdin reports from brechin, north of dundee where people had to leave their homes because of flooding. In the dark, they hadnt realised just how deep it was. The South Esk River burst its banks in brechin around four in the morning. 70 year old muriel has lived here for 20 years. Last night, she was adamant she wasnt leaving. I heard the water in the garage of our house, and this is how close weve got to escaping in our car, which is a hybrid, but we thought for a horrible moment we were trapped in it, because we couldnt get the doors open. We feel rescued now. David and isla and their beloved spaniels were sheltering in their attic before help came. We all came out through the bedroom window. Ive been up in the attic since five oclock, basically, since the water started coming into the house. This is still very much an ongoing operation. These teams have so far rescued around about 50 residents this morning. No one knows for sure how long this water will remain here, but it is thought it might stay flooded for the next couple of days. And listen to this. Just a0 miles up north in aberdeen, winds of up to 70mph. Along the coast, these homes were submerged and damaged. Yesterday, the body of a 57 year old woman was rescued from a river in angus. Within the last hour, police have confirmed the death of a 56 year old driver after a falling tree hit the van near forfar. Some parts of scotland have now been issued a new red danger to life Weather Warning for tomorrow. But for today it has been downgraded to amber as it travels south. Parts of Northern England at the midlands are now bracing themselves for what is to come. Fiona lamdin, bbc news. 0ur reporter louise cowie is also in brechin and gave us this update. The rain has literallyjust stopped before we came on air, but its been coming down thick and fast during the course of the morning. As you can see over my shoulder, a rescue operation, a substantial rescue operation, is under way, and teams have spent the morning evacuating people or trying to reach people who have been stranded, as you saw in the report. Over in the course of the last half hour, weve been moved further and further up the street, because there are real concerns that the river esk, which burst its banks leading to the evacuations, is going to rise again. Why . Well, because weve had another red Weather Warning for angus and indeed other parts of scotland which were affected by yesterdays red Weather Warning. That means we are going to expect more rain and more wind, and that comes into effect from midnight and is expected to last for 2h hours. And as weve also heard, the storm has already sadly proved deadly. A 57 year old woman died when she was swept away in a nearby river yesterday evening, and a 56 year old man died when a tree landed on his van in the town of forfar, just south of where i am, also yesterday evening. Its fair to say that scotland has borne the impact of storm babet so far, and it looks like we are in line for some further tricky conditions in the next 2a hours or so. We know that a plane has slid off the runway whilst landing at the Leeds Bradford airport. I actually watch a wheelie bin from all the way down here and then veer off down another road, and you can probably see the water still coming down that side street behind me. Thats heading towards the river, and along there are a load of terrace houses, and those people got trapped today, so what has been happening is Derbyshire Fire And Rescue Service have been sending boats up and down here knocking on doors and getting people out. It is going to be some time, i imagine, before people are able to return to their homes. Thank you. And 60 people rescued is what the rescuerjust said there. Thats double since the last time we spoke. We will go back when we have an update. And we know that richmond in North Yorkshire has also been hit my Colleague Rowan Bridge has been getting the latest. You can see the river swell up behind me. The rain has been coming down pretty much relentlessly since about ten oclock this morning when we arrived here. And you can see behind me the impact that that has had on the river which is a real barometer of what the conditions have been like. That is running much harder and faster and higher than it was even a few hours ago. Weve had people turning up to take photos of it such is the scene here, and that is really reflected across much of Northern England and indeed other parts of england as well. There are 200 Flood Warnings in place across england, meaning that flooding is expected. Another 211 flood alerts, meeting that fighting is possible. Much of those are covering a spine that runs from the northeast of england down the eastern side of the pen names to the midlands in North Derbyshire is sort of area. And that is having a Significant Impact on the rail network, especially around the rail network, especially around the midlands and the north of england and i would really advise anyone to check before they try to travel on the narrow racket rail network on the moment. Pennines. More now on our top story and our weather presenter Ben Richjoins Me now from the newsroom. Put this into context for us. How much rain, how do you explain what is going on . Is going on . This is the radar picture. It shows us where rain has fallen during today commanded im going to run this animation twice. Have a look at scott and first of all. Notice the rain just kept on coming across these Eastern Parts of scotland. Some areas here we think have recorded close to 200 ammendment of rain. That is where we had a met office red warning. That warning has now expired. But the River Systems take time to respond to that rainfall. So flooding is likely to remain a concern as i will show you in a moment. Im going to run the sequence again because ive been Hearing Stories from all across the country of the impact of his heavy rain, parts of Northern England, the midlands, wales, Northern Ireland actually, this rain set in and just did not move. Some really intense rainfalljust affecting the tops of the pennines and flowing down into the River Systems, hence the stories that we have heard of flooding. There are a number of Flood Warnings and for us, in fact come across Eastern Parts of scotland, aberdeenshire, angus, five severe Flood Warnings. That is the highest tier of Flood Warnings. Some really dangerous situations, and then, some other Flood Warnings, over 225 at the last count across england. 16 in scotland and 13 in wales. These figures fluctuate. Different areas see flooding at different times, and so it is worth keeping in touch with the bbc weather website. We keep those Flooding Warnings up to date and also any instructions to get from the authorities are worth following, of course. And in terms of what is going to happen next, well, we have still got this Amber Warning from the met office affecting a good part of Northern England down into the north and parts of the east midlands. Southeast scotland, to come at this morning run through until tomorrow morning. We have seen the consequences of the rain here. The rain has eased off for the time being in the eastern side of scotland, but as we head into tomorrow, this is some quite significant concern. Another red warning from the Met Office Covering Parts of aberdeenshire and down into angus, could see 100 ammendment of rain falling angus, could see 100 ammendment of rainfalling in angus, could see 100 ammendment of rain falling in places on top of what we have already had. There will be flattered that you have further flooding issues, Amber Warnings across Northern Scotland as this area of low pressure just continues to swirl. It is in no mood to character. Itjust sits with us, and that means more rain. I will show you the Rainfall Forecast as we head through tonight. The rain which has eased across parts of eastern scotland, it returns. The moist air, the strong winds coming in from the north sea running up against the high ground, it is like squeezing out a sponge. Such huge amounts of rain still to come, but a crossing and in wales, particularly as we head into tomorrow, the situation should improve. In terms of The Rain Falling from the sky. Of course, some of the River Systems do take time to respond, so i think further Flooding Problems are quite likely. Thank you for that update. As was said, plenty more updates regularly updated on our website so please do check as you go along. Moving on to the situation in israel and gaza. The un Secretary General has made an impassioned appeal for aid trucks on the egyptian border to be allowed into gaza immediately. They remain stuck at the Border Crossing point with egypt. Antonio guterres described the lorries as A Matter Of Life And Death for civilians in gaza. He also said, fuel was needed to pump water and generate electricity israel has refused to allow that. Its thought only 20 trucks will be allowed to cross, initally, once an agreement is reached. Aid agencies have described the Situation Inside Gaza as beyond catastrophic, a hellhole. Hospitals running out of medicine and fuel for their generators, Food Supplies are very low, and some people, only having dirty water to drink. More than a million civilians have been displaced. Gazas Health Ministry says more than 11,100 people have been killed. Overnight, a Greek Orthodox church, was hit. At least, 18 people are said to have been killed and dozens more wounded. The Israeli Defence force said, they had targeted militants nearby. Anger continues to build in many arab capitals. These, the pictures from egypt after friday prayers. President sisi has confirmed hell be hosting a Summit In Cairo tomorrow with leaders from arab and european countries. In the past few of hours the Israeli Military has given an update on the hostages, saying 20 of them are children and between ten and 20 are over 60. They said most of the more than 200 hostages were alive. More than 1a hundred israelis were killed in the hamas attacks they said the majority of the hostages were alive. More than 11100 israelis were killed in hamas attacks nearly two weeks ago now. Our coverage this hour begins with this report. In gaza, the rescuers are still saving who they can, but the civilian death toll continues to mount, amid israels bombardment. And frustration is spilling over. Translation we dont want to receive aid. We want the destruction and the killing of children in their sleep to stop. We are tired. Israel says it hit more than 100 hamas targets overnight, killing a top figure involved in the October The 7th massacres. With a Million People homeless, scrambling for food and water. The supplies are readyjust over the border in egypt. But despite hopes the trucks would start rolling today, they are at a standstill. The worlds top diplomat headed to the crossing himself to put on pressure. What we need is to make their move. To make the move to the other side of this wall. To make the move as quickly as possible and as many as possible. President biden, just back from the region, promised funding for more weapons for israel to fight hamas, but he made another call for restraint. We mourn every innocent life lost. We cant ignore the humanity of innocent palestinians who only want to live in peace and have an opportunity. And after his meeting with the saudi leader yesterday, the british Prime Minister rishi sunak is now in cairo, amid talks to try to stop this crisis spreading. But there was more rocket fire from gaza deep into israel last night. And the Israeli Occupied west bank is at boiling point. Dozens of palestinians have been killed by Israeli Forces and settlers in the last fortnight. This is no longer about the Current Crisis spreading from gaza to the west bank, it is already here and its getting worse. Meanwhile, for the israelis whose loved ones are being held hostage by hamas or still missing, there are few answers. Shira perezs Brother Daniel is a soldier, among those who fought the attack on an army base near gaza. Its impossible to accept, and i think me personally, ive become numb to the situation because if i accept how truly hard and truly sore this is, i dont think my body will be able to accept it. Israels forces, massed on the gaza perimeter, are still waiting for the order to come in. It could come at any time. The rest of the region is bracing itself. Tom bateman, bbc news, jerusalem. The british Prime Minister rishi sunak and the egyptian president sisi agreed on friday that Global Leaders should do Everything Possible to avoid a contagion of conflict in the middle east. Mr sunak also welcomed efforts by egypt to reopen the rafah Border Crossing with gaza as soon as possible. He spoke to our colleagues from bbc arabic about the remember, that crossing is the only route for much needed aid to into gaza. When this crisis unfolded, one thing we focused on was getting the rapid crossing open. And im very pleased that that will now happen. We announced an increase in ourfunding for humanitarian aid into the region and when i met with the president of egypt earlier today, he and i had a good discussion about how the uk can provide practical assistance on the ground to ensure the sustainability of that aid through the crossing to the people who need it. Here in the uk, the conservatives suffered two heavy by election defeats, with Labour Overturning huge majorities to take Mid Bedfordshire and tamworth. The party made history in Mid Bedfordshire, winning the seat for the first time. This gives the party a majority of 1316 votes. This means the swing from the conservatives to labour was 23. 9 . In the labour candidate won the seat with 13,872 votes. It gives the seat with 13,872 votes. It gives the party a majority of 1192 votes. This means the swing from the conservatives to labour was 20. 5 . The conservatives blamed low turnout, saying their voters stayed at home. 0ur Political Correspondent iain watson reports. Two previously tory seats, two big wins for labour. Keir starmer has been to visit both, with big swings for his party from the conservatives in tamworth, but his first stop this morning was to celebrate his close victory in Mid Bedfordshire. We know that voters here have voted for us and they have put their trust and the confidence in a changed labour party, and we will repay them for that trust and confidence. We do so humbly. Theres no wonder keir starmer is looking so pleased with himself. Before polling day, campaigners here told me that it would be between a conservative hold and a historic labour victory, but now his party has overturned the biggest Numerical Majority at a by election ever and in a seat which has been conservative since before the second world war. At this coffee morning, some voters did they had an appetite for change. I voted conservative last time because that is the way things were going. But now it is a time for change, definitely it is. I am not too keen on keir starmer. Some other voters were shopping around for alternatives to the conservatives as well. They said the track record for the mp who had resigned when she didnt get a peerage had been a line of attack for labour. We voted against Nadine Dorries, we want a fresh start again, because Nadine Dorries was absent. I voted for lib dems, mainly because i wasnt prepared to vote for the conservatives. I sort of wish i now had voted for the labour. Why is that . Because i think the country is ready for a change. The lib dems fought a robust campaign, increasing their vote and coming a close third. They wanted some credit for the conservatives defeat. But by potentially eating into conservative support, we have won the support of lifelong conservative voters, we played an instrumental role in defeating the conservatives. I asked keir starmer s Campaign Coordinator if, on reflection, the lib demas had helped labour. Would you like to give thanks to ed davey . They got the politics and the policies wrong and the entire campaign wrong. So the idea of the labour party has just scored this incredible victory owing anything to the lib dems is fanciful. Although mid beds was a spectacular win, tamworth is more significant for labour and could suggest that it was a move back to when they voted for tony blair. The defeated conservative candidate made a hasty exit and the government ministers blamed traditional voters who hadnt turned up at all. People stayed at home, and what people want is for us to focus on the five priorities we have to deliver. We still have to demonstrate to them it is worth getting out of their house and voting conservative like they usually do. The conservatives believe they will have a narrow path to victory at the general election, but it now feels a bit more like a tightrope. The truth is two by election results, both of them extremely bad news for the conservatives. Whatever criteria you use, they are up there, very clearly, in the top ten of worst conservative performances against the labour party. By elections often attract a protest vote, but what is bound to worry conservative mps is that labour have just won two seats that looked so safe and so solid until yesterday. A recap of our top story, the devastating storm sweeping across parts of the uk. A third person has died as storm babet causes cats around the uk. The man who died in shropshire was taken from water from an Overflowing Brook onto a road. Earlier, 56 year old man died after his van hit a tree, and a 67 year old woman was killed after being swept into the water. Now, this is bbc news. Theres plenty more to come, so do keep watching and of course, do check our website. Hello. Storm babet continues to batter the uk. Now weve seen some large waves pummeling the coastline of the north sea. This was south shields. The winds have been gusting around 60 miles an hour at times around the north sea coasts. And of course, flooding has been the other major concern, particularly so in parts of scotland, where we still have five severe Flood Warnings in force along stretches of both the north and the south esk. As well as these five severe Flood Warnings, we also have 16 Flood Warnings elsewhere in scotland, another five for wales and 189 for england. A large chunk of those are affecting the midlands, where weve also seen disruption to transport and some schools have been shut too. Todays Weather Warnings, then the Amber Warnings stretch from the north midlands up to the scottish borders. Theyll be joined by further Weather Warnings in scotland overnight. And notice another top level red Weather Warning. Well, these warnings for scotland stay in force for tomorrow as well. Another 70 to 100 millimetres of rain in angus and aberdeenshire in this red warning. That means we are likely to see some further severe flooding now now during this evening and overnight, the heaviest rain will be probably to the eastern side of the pennines for the most part, some very wet weather here with the risk of some Flooding Building in. But overnight, the rain will move back in across scotland, hence that renewed amber and red Weather Warning area, where we are going to see some further impacts. For saturday, well start to see something of an improvement in the weather across the midlands and eventually northeast england too. But some of the rivers across this part of the world can take quite a long time to respond. So even once its stopped raining, the flooding could still get worse before it gets betterfor some. And all the while, the rain continues to pour down across eastern areas of scotland with those amber and red Weather Warnings remaining in force throughout the day. Now, there is something of an improvement in the weather on sunday, many of us will have a dry day with a bit more in the way of sunshine around. Flooding, though, could still be a concern, even if its not raining where you are. As i say, some of those rivers can take a little while to crest, temperatures about 12 15 degrees celsius. What we really need is a long spell of dry weather. Its not what were going to get. However, next week weve got further areas of low pressure, bringing further zones of heavy rain. Thats not going to be great news. This is bbc news. The headlines Trucks Carrying Aid remains stuck at the Rough Crossing between egypt and gaza. The un says they are the difference between life and death. Storm babet sweeps across the uk. Three people are dead and a new danger to life warning is issued for parts of scotland for tomorrow. And keir starmer hails labours two by Election Victories as a game changer. The party overturned huge conservative majorities in tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire. More on all of those Headline Stories here in a moment or two, but first lets head to the bbc sport centre, round up the sport headlines of the day. Ben croucher is there. Good evening. Matthew, thank you. Pakistan look like they will fall short in their Mammoth Run Chase Against Australia in the cricket world cup. Australia were put in by pakistan and that proved costly as david warner, who was dropped on 10, struck a brilliant 163 and he shared a mammoth Opening Partnership of 259 with mitch marsh, who scored 121 on his 32nd birthday. At that stage, australia were cruising, but five wickets for Shaheen Shah Afridi helped restrict them to 367 when a score of 1100 had looked lightly. When a score of 1100 had looked likely
